Pre-Spring Position Preview: Breaking down the Alabama WRs

A closer look at the Alabama wide receivers ahead of spring practice

Before we know it, new Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer will hit the practice field with his Crimson Tide players for the first time when spring practice gets underway in March.

With the retirement of the legendary Nick Saban, there have not been this many question marks surrounding the football program since 2007 when Saban took over.

Contrary to popular belief, Alabama still has one of the most talented rosters in the country and should be right in the thick of the college football playoff conversation.

As the anticipation builds leading up to spring practice, Roll Tide Wire will preview each position group. We have already looked at the quarterbacks and the running backs, so now we will shift our focus to the Alabama wide receivers.

Social media goes wild as Alabama extends its second half lead over Ole Miss

Social media is loving the touchdown pass from Jalen Milroe to Jalen Hale

With just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter, Jalen Milroe delivers a 33-yard strike to freshman wide receiver Jalen Hale for a touchdown to extend Alabama’s lead over Ole Miss, 17-7.

After a lazy first-half performance on offense, the Crimson Tide have scored twice in the third quarter and seems to have taken over the momentum inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Milroe is now 15-19 for 201 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Hale is quickly becoming a playmaker for the Alabama offense, hauling two catches for 63 yards.

Following Milroe’s incredible touchdown strike after taking a vicious hit, social media erupted in excitement.

Alabama offers former high school teammate of Tide WR Jalen Hale

Taylor Tatum recently received an offer from the Alabama coaching staff. He was a high school teammate of Alabama wide receiver Jalen Hale.

Alabama recently landed a four-star wide receiver Jalen Hale from Longview High School in Longview, Texas. Well, the Tide are now recruiting his former high school teammate Taylor Tatum.

As a junior, Tatum had 206 carries for 1,840 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also hauled in 12 receptions for 160 yards and three touchdowns.

If his stats are indicative of his future at the college level, it signals that it could be very bright. It will not be easy for Alabama to out-recruit some of the other programs in the Lonestar state. Nonetheless, the coaching staff has plenty of time to build relationships and get him on campus.

Friday Night Notes: Alabama adds to ’23 recruiting lead, LSU penalized for violations, plus more

Latest football recruiting news around the high school and college landscape.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

Alabama has dominated the college football scene for years now. While Nick Saban’s coaching has undoubtedly been a major factor, you can’t underplay their ability to consistently attract the top high school football prospects from around the country.

The Tide already had the lead in the 2023 recruiting rankings, and they extended that advantage this week by picking up two more significant commitments…

Andrew Ivins, 247Sports

On Monday, Alabama bolstered its front line by earning a commitment from Tyler Legacy (Texas) defensive tackle Jordan Renaud. He is ranked seventh among all defensive linemen in his class and No. 13 overall in the state. Renaud (6-foot-3, 245 pounds) is a violent rusher with a proven ability to get into the backfield. Last season he totaled 61 tackles, including six for a loss. He also had offers from Oklahoma, Auburn and Florida, among others.

Two days later, the Rolling Tide added a weapon on the other side of the ball with Longview (Texas) four-star wide receiver Jalen Hale. Hale (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) has also played basketball and track. Last season he posted 37 catches, 652 yards and nine touchdowns, and he’s already caught four this year in four games. Hale is ranked No. 9 at wide receiver in his class at No. 51 nationally.

Together, these two additions boosted Alabama’s recruiting score to 309.14, a substantial lead over second-place Texas. They now have commitments from 16 of ESPN’s top 300 prospects – the most in the country.

Texas continues to trend for four-star WR DeAndre Moore Jr.

Moore is the No. 81 overall player and No. 14 WR in the On3 consensus.

The Alabama Crimson Tide dealt Texas a tough loss on the recruiting trail this week. Nick Saban won out for talented Longview wide receiver Jalen Hale.

It appears it only took the Longhorns a couple of days to get over the loss.

Steve Sarkisian and company are trending for a big time wide receiver in the 2023 class. Current Louisville commit DeAndre Moore Jr. appears to be keeping his options open, and Texas is squarely in the mix.

Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas entered a prediction in favor of the Longhorns on Thursday.

The elite receiver hails from St. John Bosco, a California private school you have probably heard if you follow recruiting closely. A win would be huge for Sarkisian as he tries to build a pipeline from California to Texas in recruiting.

Here is what On3 Sports had to say about Moore.

Has strong long speed, running a wind-legal 10.90 in the 100 meters as a junior. … Uses his burst to quickly get upfield after the catch. Shows good contact balance with the ability to bounce out of and break tackles at the second level.

Moore is the No. 81 overall player and No. 14 wide receiver in the On3 consensus.
