Georgia football DT Jalen Carter expected to miss time with injury

Jalen Carter likely out “a week or two” after injuring knee vs. Mizzou

The Georgia Bulldogs are expected to be without star defensive tackle Jalen Carter for at least the next week, head coach Kirby Smart told reporters on Monday.

Carter left Saturday’s Week 4 win over Missouri early with a knee injury.

Per Smart, it is an injured MCL and Carter will likely miss the Auburn game this coming Saturday.

“He’s going to be a week or two,” Smart said. “We don’t know how long it’s going to be but it’s not going to look good for this week.”

The play that caused the injury to Carter has been receiving a good bit of circulation on Twitter for being a dirty block by the Missouri offensive lineman.

“It doesn’t really matter what I think about the block,” Smart said when asked about it by reporters.

Carter entered the game with an ailing ankle that had been bothering him for a week weeks prior to the Missouri game. Defensive tackle Warren Brinson received more playing time on Saturday and played well. He is dealing with a minor groin injury he picked up on Saturday but is probable to play versus Auburn.

Georgia hosts Auburn this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. ET game on CBS.

Kirby Smart provides injury update on Jalen Carter, Adonai Mitchell

Kirby Smart discusses injuries to AD Mitchell and Jalen Carter

Georgia Bulldogs head football coach Kirby Smart met with the media on Monday to discuss the Week 3 win over South Carolina and the upcoming home game versus Kent State.

Smart discussed the departure of defensive back William Poole, a sixth year senior who has played in 33 games throughout his UGA career.

“William Poole is not going to be with us for the remainder of the season,” Smart said.

“He’s dealing with a personal matter, and he’s going to focus on that and his health and well-being, so he will not be with us for the rest of the year, unfortunately.”

He also discussed the health of two big-time players: Defensive tackle Jalen Carter and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.

Mitchell did not play in Georgia’s 48-7 win over South Carolina due to an ankle injury he suffered against Samford the week prior.

“We’re hoping to get him back this week,” Smart said. “Again, it’s one of those deals where last week we were hopeful to get him back.”

As for Carter, Smart said the superstar defensive tackle has been dealing with an ankle injury since Georgia’s Week 1 win over Oregon.

That held Carter out of the starting lineup on Saturday against the Gamecocks, though he still managed two tackles in the game on 11 snaps played.

“Jalen has been dealing with a lingering ankle issue, he really had it since the Oregon game and he’s trying to get well,” Smart said.

“We’re trying to get him healthy. Hopefully, he’ll be full-go. He was close last week but didn’t end up having to play a lot of snaps.”

Georgia has just one sack through three games this season.

Additionally, Smart said that cornerback Nyland Green is dealing with a lingering hamstring issue. Green did not play against South Carolina.

Falcons land Georgia DL Jalen Carter in Draft Wire’s new mock

2023 NFL draft: The Falcons land #Georgia DL Jalen Carter in new Draft Wire mock.

The Georgia Bulldogs were so good in 2021 that even the Atlanta Falcons couldn’t resist drafting multiple players from last year’s National Championship team.

In total, 15 Georgia players were drafted back in April, including a record five defensive players in the first round alone. The Bulldogs defense looks to be loaded yet again after destroying Oregon, 49-3, over the weekend.

Georgia’s star defensive lineman Jalen Carter could be an option for the Falcons in the 2023 draft. That’s what Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling is projecting in his latest mock draft.

With the No. 2 overall pick, Easterling has Atlanta passing on a new signal-caller in favor of Carter since the team “stole” Desmond Ridder in the third round of this past draft.

“The Falcons just stole Desmond Ridder in the third round, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them pass on a quarterback here. Instead, they follow the Texans lead, going with the best value and a dominant, disruptive force for their defensive front.”

The first QB is taken third overall in Draft Wire’s mock, with the Seattle Seahawks drafting Florida’s Anthony Richardson. Check out the full mock draft here!

Speaking of draft picks, Falcons rookie WR Drake London was listed as limited on the team’s first official injury report Wednesday. Atlanta hosts New Orleans during Week 1 in a rematch of the 2021 season finale.

Jalen Carter seems determined to prove that he’s still Georgia’s best defender

Georgia DI Jalen Carter might have been the best player on 2021’s historic defense. Carter seems ready to be even better in 2022.

The Georgia Bulldogs’ 2021 defense was historically great, and that reflected in Georgia’s draft status on that side of the ball in 2022. Edge-rusher Travon Walker went first overall to the Jaguars. DI Jordan Davis went to the Eagles with the 13th pick, linebacker Quay Walker went to the Packers 22nd overall, DI Devonte Wyatt also went to Green Bay, this time with the 28th pick, and safety Lewis Cine finished out the first round, going to the Vikings with the 32nd pick.

Five defensive players from one school in one first round? That’s the most ever. Linebackers Nakobe Dean (Eagles) and Channing Tindall (Dolphins) each went in the third round, so if you want to know how great that defense was, and those players were… there’s your answer.

Still, when you ask people familiar with Georgia’s defense, many will tell you that the best player on that defense in 2021 is still on the Bulldogs’ roster. That would be DI Jalen Carter, who’s eligible for the 2023 draft. Last season, Carter totaled four sacks, six quarterback hits, and 24 quarterback hurries. But as we have detailed, you can’t analyze Georgia’s defenders based on pressure numbers; you’ll miss the forest for the trees. You have to watch the tape, and in Georgia’s 2022 opener against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday afternoon, Carter already looked in playoff form. On this tackle for loss, Carter (No. 88) took Oregon’s Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu — all six-foot-6 and 330 pounds of him — and threw him aside like the proverbial sack of potatoes.

The six-foot-3,m 310-pound Carter had a knack for plays like this last season. Here, Georgia Tech’s right tackle tried to keep up with Carter on the edge, and one simple swipe move later, it was all over.

And on this play against Kentucky… well, I’m not sure how the right guard was supposed to deal with Carter’s ungodly combination of quickness across the blocker’s face and speed to the pocket, but it wasn’t this.

And if you’re going to run a simple slide against Carter, as UAB did here, you’re basically bringing a spork to a gunfight.

We’ll get a lot more into Carter’s pass-rushing abilities as time goes on — he seems like a lead-pipe top-three pick if this keeps up, and I had him going second overall to the Texans in my most recent mock draft, behind only Alabama EDGE Will Anderson Jr. to the Falcons first overall. This is just a reminder to Georgia’s opponents that unless you get off the ball very quickly, and you bring all kinds of help to deal with him, Jalen Carter is going to ruin your offense.

2023 NFL mock draft: First-round projections based on the 2022 preseason

A mock draft before the 2022 NFL regular season begins? Yes, because scouting is a year-round endeavor. Here’s how the first round might look next year.

NFL teams obviously don’t start their scouting process for the following year in the following year. It’s a year-round process. Area scouts are readying for the 2022 college football season. Scouting directors are coordinating the whole things, and general managers are crunching a bit of tape whenever they might be able in bite-size pieces around the daily business of getting ready for their own seasons.

One thing that tells all those people what their needs might be in next year’s draft is this year’s preseason. You have a pretty good idea at this point what your team’s strengths and weaknesses are, and while you may get a slight kick from somebody else’s castoff in final cuts, you kind of have what you have unless you’re thinking about making a major trade before the deadline.

So, the 2023 draft matters. Even now, when the 2022 NFL regular season hasn’t even started.

With that in mind, here’s how I might assess team needs and prospect availability were I every general manager with a first-round pick in that 2023 draft, using the Pro Football Focus draft simulator. Team slots are based on PFF’s projections.

A few things you’ll notice right off the bat. I am assuming that the Falcons and the Texans will end the 2022 season happy enough with their quarterback situations to avoid selecting Alabama’s Bryce Young or Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, or whichever NCAA quarterback comes out of nowhere, as one quarterback seems to every year. Same with the Dolphins, who are using their non-forfeited first-round pick elsewhere. After Atlanta and Houston, the real QB-needy teams at the top of the draft — the Lions and Seahawks — act accordingly.

Here’s one person’s version of the first round of the 2023 NFL draft, based on how the 2022 preseason has gone, and how the 2022 regular season might shake out.

Pair of Georgia Bulldogs make ESPN’s preseason All-America team

A pair of Georgia Bulldogs have made ESPN’s preseason All-America team ahead of the 2022 college football season. Georgia tight end Brock Bowers and defensive tackle Jalen Carter both made ESPN’s All-America team, which only featured a first-team.

Brock Bowers was one of the top tight ends in the country last season despite being a true freshman. He battled through a shoulder injury and helped Georgia win the national championship. Bowers finished the season with 56 catches for 882 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Bowers scored totaled 330 receiving yards, 22 receptions, and five touchdowns over his final four games last season. He will be a key piece of Georgia’s elite tight end room for the 2022 college football season.

Defensive tackle Jalen Carter finished last season with three sacks and 37 tackles, but was often times considered the top player on Georgia’s elite defense in 2021. Carter will be leaned on more as a junior. He’s expected to play more snaps this season.

Carter is projected as one of the top picks in the 2023 NFL draft. Who will help Carter rush the passer? Georgia returns senior outside linebacker Nolan Smith, but ESPN thinks that true freshman Mykel Williams will make an immediate impact for the Bulldogs.

Alabama has the most players (four) on ESPN’s All-America team. Clemson and Ohio State both have three players on the team.

Oregon vs. Georgia: How much more talented is the Bulldogs’ roster than the Ducks?

Both Georgia and Oregon have a lot of talent on the rosters, but when you compare them side by side, how do they stack up?

We are just about two weeks away from the 2022 college football season getting underway with a matchup between the Oregon Ducks and Georgia Bulldogs.

No. 11 is going to travel to Atlanta to face No. 3 in a game that will draw the eyeballs of many.

To kick off our preview coverage of the big game, we wanted to look at the talent on the two rosters to see if there was a disparity that could lead to an advantage to either team. We know that Georgia, the defending national champions, is an SEC power and recruits at an incredibly high level. However, they just lost a record 15 players to the NFL draft.

So where does the balance of power at the top of the roster now stand heading into the 2022 season? To figure this out, we looked at ESPN’s latest ranking of top-100 players in college football. Which team has more players in the top 100, and who ranks the highest of them all?

The answer is pretty stark.

Georgia places seven players on ESPN’s top-100 for 2022

Seven Dawgs made ESPN’s list of the top-100 CFB players for 2022

ESPN ranked the top-100 players in college football for the upcoming 2022 season and multiple Georgia Bulldogs made the list, including two in the top-ten.

Despite losing 15 players to the NFL and more to the NCAA transfer portal, the Dawgs still placed seven players inside the top-100.

Alabama leads the way with 8 players, including the No. 1 overall and No. 2 overall guys in quarterback Bryce Young and linebacker Will Anderson. Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud checked in at No. 3 on the list.

Here are the seven Georgia players inside the top-100:

NIL valuations for Georgia’s most valuable players

These NIL valuations for Georgia players will blow your mind

On3 has released its NIL Valuation Rankings, which sets the standard market NIL value for college athletes.

Taking into account a player’s performance, exposure and influence, On3 calculates an athlete’s NIL value, projecting out to as long as 12 months into the future.

On3’s “NIL100” ranks the 100 most valuable college football players in America. The most valuable college football player in America is Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, with an NIL valuation of $3.1M, $700K larger than Ohio State’s CJ Stroud who is tied for second on the list.

On3 also looks at high school prospects, where Arch Manning’s valuation is at $3.4M, making him the most valuable football player in America on either the high school or collegiate level. Sierra Canyon’s Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, has the largest NIL valuation of anyone at $6.4M.

The Georgia Bulldogs have nine players on the list, including five in the top-50:

First up is rising junior defensive lineman Jalen Carter, who is considered a top-5 NFL draft pick by draft analysts. The preseason All-American is poised for a big year for a new-look UGA defense without Jordan Davis, Devonte Wyatt or Travon Walker.

Brock Bowers led the national champions in receiving last season as a freshman. With a year in the system under his belt and quarterback Stetson Bennett back at the helm, Bowers will have an even more important role in the Bulldogs’ attack.

Kelee Ringo put the college football world on notice when he sealed the deal in the national championship with the infamous interception returned for a touchdown. What went unnoticed by many was Ringo’s impact throughout the season as a lockdown cornerback. Also considered an early NFL draft pick next spring, Ringo will be the Bulldogs’ No. 1 coverage man in 2022.
