NFL insider expects Panthers OLB Jadeveon Clowney to draw trade interest

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini lists Panthers OLB Jadeveon Clowney amongst a handful of veteran pass rushers who could draw trade interest.

Could Jadeveon Clowney’s homecoming be cut short?

Dianna Russini, senior NFL insider for The Athletic, emptied out her latest set of notes from across the league on Saturday morning. With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, Russini focuses in on a handful of pass rushers who could possibly be on the move—including the top outside linebacker for the Carolina Panthers.

She writes:

You can add the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby and the Browns’ Myles Garrett to the list of “every team wants them but they aren’t for sale.” I do expect teams to still ask the Raiders and Browns, but based on my conversations with sources from both teams, those two are too valuable to sell off.

Speaking of pass rushers, I expect the Panthers’ Jadeveon Clowney, the Packers’ Preston Smith and a different Browns vet, Za’Darius Smith, to draw some interest before the deadline.

Clowney—a Rock Hill, S.C. native and a University of South Carolina great—signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Panthers this past offseason. With a shoulder injury keeping him out of the last two contests, the 31-year-old has appeared in five games for Carolina thus far—amassing 12 combined tackles and a sack.

While it may be in the best interest of the 1-6 Panthers to sell off valuable veterans for future assets, the defense has little to no pass rush to speak of—and that’s with the three-time Pro Bowler. Outside of Clowney, the team is carrying three outside ‘backers on their active roster—Charles Harris, Thomas Incoom and DJ Johnson.

Carolina’s seven sacks currently rank 31st in the NFL.

Panthers QB Bryce Young named starter for Week 8 matchup vs. Broncos

With Andy Dalton dealing with a right thumb injury, the Panthers will hand the reins back over to Bryce Young in Week 8.

The Carolina Panthers will, once again, look a little different under center.

On Wednesday, head coach Dave Canales announced that second-year quarterback Bryce Young is set to start in the team’s Week 8 matchup against the Denver Broncos. The second shot for the 2023 No. 1 overall pick comes as a result of a right thumb injury to veteran Andy Dalton, who was involved in a minor car accident on Tuesday.

Young was benched following a disappointing start to his sophomore campaign. He passed for just 250 yards and three interceptions over a pair of losses.

Here, headlined by Dalton, is Wednesday’s full injury report:

Panthers Week 7 inactives: Diontae Johnson to play vs. Commanders

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson is active for today’s matchup against the Commanders.

Despite a few doubts, the Carolina Panthers will have their leading receiver in uniform for today’s matchup from the nation’s capital.

Wideout Diontae Johnson is set to play against the Washington Commanders later this afternoon. The sixth-year veteran was listed as questionable for the contest on Friday with ankle, ribs and hamstring injuries.

Johnson did not participate in practice sessions on both Wednesday and Thursday with the ankle issue. He was then upgraded to a limited participant on Friday, but carried two additional injury designations for his ribs and hamstring.

Through six games, Johnson leads the Panthers in receptions (29), receiving yards (340) and receiving touchdowns (three).

The Panthers will, however, be without a few key starters including right tackle Taylor Moton (elbow), defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson (ankle) and inside linebacker Josey Jewell (hamstring/groin)—all of whom were ruled out on Friday. Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (shoulder) will also be a no-go for the second straight week.

Here are all the Week 7 inactives for Carolina:

  • ILB Claudin Cherelus
  • OLB Jadeveon Clowney
  • ILB Josey Jewell
  • OT Taylor Moton
  • ILB Jon Rhattigan
  • DL A’Shawn Robinson
  • TE Tommy Tremble

And here are the inactives for Washington:

Panthers OLB Jadeveon Clowney pessimistic about playing in Week 7

Don’t expect to see Panthers OLB Jadeveon Clowney this Sunday against the Commanders.

Don’t expect to see big No. 7 out on the Northwest Stadium field for the Carolina Panthers this Sunday.

Starting outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney returned to the practice field this afternoon after missing the first two sessions of the week due to a shoulder injury. But Clowney, who has been listed as doubtful for the team’s contest against the Washington Commanders, doesn’t think he’ll return to the playing field in Week 7.

“It’s getting better,” he said of his injury. “I’ll probably be down this week, but I’m headed in the right direction. Better than it was last week.”

Clowney injured his shoulder in the Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears. He’d proceed to sit out from the following game against the Atlanta Falcons, giving way to starts by veteran and former first-round pick Charles Harris and 2023 third-round pick DJ Johnson.

The Panthers have amassed the second-fewest sacks (six) in the NFL heading into the weekend.

Panthers Week 7 injury report: 6 players ruled out vs. Commanders

The Panthers will be without a handful of starters in Week 7.

The Carolina Panthers defense will be without even more of their starters in Week 7.

Six players have been ruled out ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Commanders—including defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson (ankle) as well as inside linebackers Josey Jewell (hamstring/groin) and Claudin Cherelus (hamstring). Cherelus got the starting nod in place of Jewell in last week’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

On offense, the team will be without starting right tackle Taylor Moton (elbow) for the second straight outing and rookie running back Jonathon Brooks (knee). After being sidelined for the offseason and the first six weeks of the regular season, Brooks was officially designated to return to practice on Wednesday.

In addition, wide receiver Diontae Johnson (ankle)—who returned to the field on Friday after missing the two previous practices—has been listed as questionable.

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson was held out of practice once again on Thursday.

The Carolina Panthers were without their No. 1 receiver for the second straight day this week.

After being held out of Wednesday’s practice, wideout Diontae Johnson did not participate in Thursday’s session. Johnson—who leads the team in receptions (29), receiving yards (340) and receiving touchdowns (three)—has been dealing with an ankle injury.

Fellow starter and outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney also remained sidelined. The three-time Pro Bowler injured his shoulder during the Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson, 8 others held out from Wednesday’s practice

WR Diontae Johnson and OT Taylor Moton were among the 9 Panthers who did not participate in today’s practice.

(This story was updated to add new information.)

The Carolina Panthers are beginning Week 7 with one heck of an injury report.

Eight players, including wideout Diontae Johnson and right tackle Taylor Moton, were held out of this afternoon’s practice.

Johnson, per head coach Dave Canales, is expected to be back for Thursday’s session. The team’s leading receiver has been nursing ankle and groin injuries throughout the season.

Moton, meanwhile, remains “day-to-day.” The eighth-year hog molly missed the very first game of his NFL career this past Sunday due to a triceps injury.

Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, who missed Week 6’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, also did not participate. (Clowney’s initial listing as a “limited’ participant was officially changed by the team following the release of today’s injury report.)

Panthers Week 6 inactives: Jadeveon Clowney out vs. Falcons

The Panthers will be without a handful of starters this afternoon against the Falcons.

The Carolina Panthers will have to dig deep off the edge this afternoon.

As expected, starting outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney will not suit up for Sunday’s divisional clash against the visiting Atlanta Falcons. Clowney, who sustained a shoulder injury in the Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears, did not participate in practice throughout the week and was listed as doubtful for the contest.

To help at the position, the Panthers added seventh-year pass rusher Marquis Haynes Sr. to the active roster on Saturday. Haynes Sr., after spending his first six seasons in Carolina, rejoined the organization as a member of the practice squad on Oct. 4.

Along with Clowney, the Panthers will also be without three more starters in tight end Tommy Tremble, inside linebacker Josey Jewell and right tackle Taylor Moton—who will miss the very first game of his NFL career.

Here is the full list of inactives for the Panthers in Week 6:

  • CB Shemar Bartholomew
  • OLB Jadeveon Clowney
  • LB Josey Jewell
  • G Jarrett Kingston
  • OT Taylor Moton
  • C Andrew Raym
  • TE Tommy Tremble

And for Atlanta:

  • LB Troy Andersen
  • DL Brandon Dorlus
  • OL Jovaughn Gwyn
  • RB Jase McClellan
  • OT Brandon Parker
  • DL Kentavius Street
  • OL Elijah Wilkinson
