Panthers designate Claudin Cherelus to return from injured reserve

The Panthers have designated LB Claudin Cherelus, who hasn’t played since Week 8, to return from IR.

When it comes to their rolodex of an injured reserve list, the Carolina Panthers now have one more lifeline left.

The team announced on Wednesday morning that they have designated linebacker Claudin Cherelus to return from IR. His designation is the seventh of a possible eight for Carolina this season.

Cherelus hit the shelf back on Nov. 3 due to a knee injury. He last played in the Week 8 win over the Houston Texans, where he recorded 15 snaps on special teams.

The Panthers claimed Cherelus off waivers from the New York Jets on Aug. 30, along with offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison. The undrafted rookie out of Alcorn State University has appeared in six contests this season, with each of his 105 snaps coming as a special teamer.

Wednesday’s decision now opens Cherelus’ 21-day window to make a return to the active roster. He is eligible to be activated at any time.

Panthers’ updated 53-man roster following addition of David Long Jr.

Gallery: Panthers’ updated active roster following Friday’s addition of CB David Long Jr.

After placing rookie linebacker Claudin Cherelus on injured reserve on Friday, the Carolina Panthers wasted very little time filling his spot.

To get back to a 53-man roster, the team claimed cornerback David Long Jr. off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders. The former third-round pick and Super Bowl winner now joins the fold here in Week 9.

Now, let’s take a look at the updated roster . . .

Panthers claim CB David Long Jr. off waivers from Raiders

The Panthers have been awarded former Rams third-round pick David Long Jr. off claimers.

The Carolina Panthers didn’t waste much time getting themselves right back to a 53-man roster on Friday.

As announced this afternoon, the team has been awarded cornerback David Long Jr. off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders. The 25-year-old defender will now fill the spot left vacant by rookie linebacker Clauin Cherelus, who was just placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.

A Los Angeles, Calif. native, Long Jr. was taken by his hometown Rams in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft. The University of Michigan product, who was coming straight off a First-team All-Big Ten nod, was the 79th overall selection that spring.

Long Jr. would spend four seasons in Los Angeles, including the Super Bowl-winning campaign in 2021. There, he worked alongside a handful of current Panthers assistants—including defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, secondary/cornerbacks coach Jonathan Cooley and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.

He appeared in all eight games for Las Vegas this season.

Panthers place LB Claudin Cherelus on injured reserve

The Panthers have placed rookie LB Claudin Cherelus on IR

We found out earlier today that the Carolina Panthers will not have linebacker Claudin Cherelus for their Week 9 contest against the Indianapolis Colts. But unfortunately, we’ve since found out that he’ll be away for a bit longer than that.

As announced by the team this afternoon, Cherelus has been placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury. The rookie defender, who was already ruled out for the weekend on Friday’s injury report, will now miss at least the next four games.

Cherelus broke into the NFL this past spring as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets. The Alcorn State University product, after spending the summer with Gang Green, would then be claimed off waivers by Carolina and added to their 53-man roster at the end of August.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder has played in six games for the Panthers this season, with all 105 of his snaps coming on special teams.

Panthers Week 9 injury report: 3 players ruled out vs. Colts

The Panthers have ruled out three players from Sunday’s contest against the Colts, including OLB Justin Houston and WR Laviska Shenault Jr.

The Carolina Panthers will be even thinner at outside linebacker in Week 9.

Four-time Pro Bowler Justin Houston has been ruled out of Sunday’s contest against the Indianapolis Colts due to a hamstring injury. The 34-year-old, who sustained the setback in last weekend’s 15-13 win over the Houston Texans, has played in approximately 41 percent of the defense’s snaps this season—having recorded nine combined tackles and half a sack.

With Brian Burns still dealing with a hyperextended elbow and Yetur Gross-Matos currently on injured reserve due to a hamstring issue of his own, the Panthers will have to dig into their depth at the position once again. Burns, who is a go, could be joined by Amaré Barno as well as rookies DJ Johnson and Eku Leota.

The Panthers, who won’t have wideout Laviska Shenault Jr. or linebacker Claudin Cherelus either, are also likely to be without safety Vonn Bell—who is listed as doubtful. Bell missed the last two games due to a quadriceps injury.

8 Panthers get new uniform numbers on Wednesday

Eight players on the Panthers’ active roster donned new digits on Wednesday.

While we were busy putting much of our attention on Brian Burns and his fellow team captains, quite a few Carolina Panthers debuted some new digits on Wednesday.

Here are the uniform number updates for eight of the active roster’s players:

Panthers claim 3 players off waivers on Wednesday

The Panthers claimed a trio of players off waivers following Tuesday’s roster cuts.

So, this is why we use the “initial” in initial 53-man rosters.

Less than 24 hours after gathering their first set of 53 players, the Carolina Panthers plucked three new names off waivers on Wednesday. Those fresh faces—who were all cut prior to Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline—include offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton, linebacker Claudin Cherelus and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison.

Throckmorton cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 2020. The University of Oregon product has appeared in 31 games over the past two seasons—with 12 starts at left guard, seven at right guard and one at left tackle.

Cherelus, who the Panthers saw a bit of at training camp, was just let go by the New York Jets. Another undrafted free agent, the 6-foot-2, 230-pounder was a standout defender at Alcorn State University.

Jamison, also an undrafted free agent, spent the offseason with the San Francisco 49ers. The 5-foot-9, 186-pounder also has experience as a return man, which may be something Carolina is still trying to figure out.
