Germaine de Randamie announces UFC Fight Night 243 withdrawal; replacement found

Former UFC champion Germaine de Randamie has only competed once in the past four years.

Injuries have forced former UFC champion [autotag]Germaine de Randamie[/autotag] out her scheduled fight in Paris.

Thursday, de Randamie (10-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) revealed in an Instagram post that she broke a finger and a foot two weeks ago, leading to her withdrawal from UFC Fight Night 243 on Sept. 28.

“I’m so heartbroken to inform you that I had to pull out of my fight September 28th in Paris,” de Randamie wrote. “… We didn’t wanna take a risk and put one hell of a dogfight for you guys. I’m especially heartbroken because I’m coming close to the end of my fighting career and wanted to give this to my friends and family who planned to be attend in the arena. I had a plan but god decided differently this time. I will be back in the gym as soon as the doctor gives me green light. And I truly hope the UFC will give me my fight before the end of the year. Thank you for all your support and kind words. I will be back and do what I have planned to do. ‘Die with memories, not dreams.'”

de Randamie was scheduled to fight France’s [autotag]Nora Cornolle[/autotag] (8-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in a women’s bantamweight bout. Filling the void is [autotag]Jacqueline Cavalcanti[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC). Both fighters in the new matchup confirmed the booking on social media after an initial report by Ag. Fight.

Jacqueline Cavalcanti baffled UFC on ESPN 62 decision was split: ‘I lost three rounds?’

Jacqueline Cavalcanti wonders if one UFC Vegas 96 judge wasn’t watching her fight.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jacqueline Cavalcanti[/autotag] couldn’t wrap her head around the scorecards as they were read at UFC on ESPN 62.

One judge awarded all three rounds to her opponent Josiane Nunes. The other two judges ruled in her favor, two and three rounds, respectively. It was a closer call than Cavalcanti (7-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) wanted, but she still notched a split decision over Nunes (10-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC).

“I was thinking, ‘Oh my God. (Did) this guy watch the fight?’ Because I think I won two rounds or three rounds,” Cavalcanti told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference Saturday. “But I’m lost. I lost three rounds? Maybe these judges are watching another fight or a different fight or not my fight. But it’s OK. I try not to give the choice for the judges.”

A win is a win, however. Cavalcanti should take another step up the divisional ladder and could potentially even end up ranked. Regardless of whether or not she’ll have a number next to her name, she’s proud of her 2-0 start in the UFC.

“Josiane, she’s a very good fighter,” Cavalcanti said. “She’s stronger. She’s very strong. All the time, she goes the front-front-front. Me and my time, we worked for this. We worked the punch. We worked the kicks. But my objective is to knock down her but she’s stronger. The last fight she (beat) the No. 13-ranked (fighter) in the world in UFC. This is my second fight UFC. I’m so proud of myself and my team.

[lawrence-related id=2766285,2766279]

Cavalcanti signed with the UFC in mid-2023. She’s only competed twice and hopes to significantly increase her activity going forward.

“I want to fight more two times (this year), take a short notice,” Cavalcanti said. “I’m ready all the time. I stay ready now. I want one day the champion but I want to make step by step. I want to fight other girls. I don’t give a f*ck who is my next opponent. I’ll stay ready. The guys call me, I’m ready.”

UFC Paris: Nora Cornolle wants to avenge lone loss – but when she and Jacqueline Cavalcanti are at the top

Nora Cornolle’s fairytale ending would be to face Jacqueline Cavalcanti for the title – the only fighter to beat her.

PARIS – [autotag]Nora Cornolle[/autotag]’s fairytale ending would be to face [autotag]Jacqueline Cavalcanti[/autotag] for the title – the only fighter to beat her.

Cornolle (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Cavalcanti (6-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) both competed on this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 226 event at Accor Arena in Paris, but not against each other. Cornolle defeated Joselyne Edwards by unanimous decision, whereas Cavalcanti defeated Zarah Fairn to kick off the night.

Cornolle’s loss to Cavalcanti came in her professional MMA debut. She has since won seven straight and prefers to get her rematch once they’ve both established themselves in the UFC.

“It will be great storytelling to meet Jacqueline at the top for the belt,” Cornolle told reporters through an interpreter at the UFC Fight Night 226 post-fight news conference. “That each one of us goes their own path because it makes sense for us to face other new fighters, face more experienced fighters in our path. It will be great to face each other and get my revenge.”

Cornolle has already competed four times this year, and hopes to squeeze in one more before the end of 2023.

“I hope to fight again before the end of the year,” Cornolle said. “I have a four-fight contract, and I’m willing to do them well. I hope I introduced myself in this fight, and that they’ll offer me something soon.

“I want to quickly climb the rankings, show that I’m effective everywhere. That I’m a real MMA fighter that’s going to perform, that’s going to climb the rankings, that’s going to go get the belt.”

Cornolle was showered with love from her home crowd in France, which surpassed her expectations.

“All week I’ve been thinking that I’ve never experienced a crowd like this, an arena like this,” Cornolle said. “A lot of stress because we don’t know what kind of crowd we’ll get. The beautiful surprise was to have all the French fans, all of Paris tonight chanting my name. It was incredible.”

Jacqueline Cavalcanti reacts to getting eye poked in both eyes at UFC Fight Night 226

Jacqueline Cavalcanti reacts to getting eye poked in both eyes at during Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 226 fight.

PARIS – [autotag]Jacqueline Cavalcanti[/autotag] got fouled in a way never seen before in the UFC.

The women’s bantamweight fighter got accidentally eye poked in both her eyes by her opponent Zarah Fairn in the opening bout of UFC Fight Night 226, which took place this Saturday. The odd thing is that it wasn’t two separate eye pokes. Instead, it was one motion with two fingers poking both eyes separately.

“Actually it was two fingers, not one, so one in each eye,” Cavalcanti said when asked about the accidental eye poke at the UFC Fight Night 226 post-fight press conference. “One of the eyes got really affected, so I had to stop. Thank God, they stopped it so I could recover, and I could continue to go after my win.”

As soon as the foul happened, the referee stopped the bout and gave Cavalcanti (6-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) time to recover. She would eventually clear her sight and return to outpoint Fairn (6-6 MMA, 0-4 UFC) and win a unanimous decision against the Frenchwoman.

UFC Fight Night 226 marked Cavalcanti’s debut with the promotion.

You can watch her full scrum in the video above.
