Jacob Eason getting work in with Michael Pittman, Dezmon Patmon

Young Colts are putting in work.

The Indianapolis Colts don’t come back together as a team until the end of April, but that isn’t keeping Jacob Eason from getting his work in with his fellow young wide receivers.

Eason was seen in a video on Michael Pittman Jr.’s Instagram story, getting a workout in with Pittman Jr. and 2020 sixth-round pick Dezmon Patmon in California.

With Carson Wentz expected to be the new quarterback for the Colts—the deal isn’t official until the new league year starts—it is likely that Eason will be battling for the backup role with a veteran or another young quarterback.

General manager Chris Ballard has said they still need to see more from Eason before knowing what they have in the former fourth-round pick.

Pittman Jr. is expected to take over as the offense’s WR1 in 2021, barring a massive addition to the room. Patmon was on the roster for the entire season but was a healthy scratch most weeks.

It’s good to see the young Colts getting together for offseason work before the team is scheduled to get back on the field in April.

Colts’ Jacob Eason to work with QB guru Tom House

Eason will get some much-valued work with a QB guru.

As the Indianapolis Colts continue their search for a new quarterback, former fourth-round pick Jacob Eason is hard at work preparing in case he needs to step in behind center in 2021.

After a redshirt rookie season sitting behind Philip Rivers and Jacoby Brissett, Eason is hoping to get a shot at leading the Colts offense. Though Chris Ballard said that’s likely not in the plans for the 22-year-old, Eason is still doing what he can to make sure he’s ready.

That includes working with quarterback guru Tom House this offseason, per Jim Ayello of The Indianapolis Star.

In the weeks since the Colts season ended, Eason has taken some time away from the field to spend with friends and family. But the downtime is soon coming to an end. The Washington state native plans to head back west to Huntington Beach, Calif., to continue refining his game at the famed 3DQB training facility with the throwing experts Tom House and Adam Dedeaux, among others. Colts fans might remember that ex-Colts quarterback Andrew Luck worked extensively with House while recovering from a shoulder injury. Other famous 3DQB clients include Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff.

This is great for Eason’s development. Because he didn’t get any game action in the preseason and regular season, the Colts don’t know what they have in the young gunslinger. But part of his development comes from making sure “I don’t take any steps back,” Eason told Ayello.

The Colts are still going to be heavily working in the quarterback market this offseason but Eason working with House is a great sign for his development.

Former UGA WR Mecole Hardman: Colts should pass torch to Jacob Eason

Former UGA football WR Mecole Hardman says Indianapolis Colts should pass the torch to Jacob Eason with Matthew Stafford no long in the mix.

The Colts are in search of who will replace quarterback Phillip Rivers in Indianapolis next season.

The obvious answer seemed to be Georgia Bulldog great Matt Stafford, but that ship has since sailed after the former No. 1 overall pick was dealt to Los Angeles in exchange for Jared Goff and some draft picks on Saturday.

The Colts now face three options: Promote from within, look to free agency or a potential trade, or use an early draft pick on someone who can become the future of the franchise.

But let’s not forget that Indianapolis spent a mid-round pick on former Georgia and Washington quarterback Jacob Eason last year, taking the 6-foot-6 signal caller with the 122nd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Could he be an option next year for the Colts? Former Georgia wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who played two seasons with Eason in Athens, likes the first option – promote from within.

On Friday, Hardman tweeted that the Colts should look to Eason to be their guy under center next season.

After transferring from Georgia at the end of the 2017 season, Eason sat out a year due to NCAA rules and then started the 2019 season at quarterback for the Washington Huskies.

At Washington in 2019, Eason led the Huskies to an 8-5 record, throwing for 3,132 yards with 23 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Eason was projected as one of the top 5 quarterbacks in last year’s draft, but, along with former teammate Jake Fromm, was forced to wait a bit longer to hear his name called and was eventually taken in the fourth round.

2020 Colts’ position review: Quarterbacks

Reviewing the QB position.

As the offseason begins for the Indianapolis Colts, we will begin a series of positional reviews, taking a look back at the 2020 campaign. We start it off with the quarterback position.

Starter: Philip Rivers
Backup: Jacoby Brissett
Depth: Jacob Eason

Position Overview

The Colts brought in Rivers on a one-year deal worth $25 million in free agency. He replaced Brissett as the starter, who took over in 2019 for the recently-retired Andrew Luck. The Colts also selected Eason in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft, and he wound up beating out Chad Kelly for the QB3 role.

Philip Rivers’ Resurgence

There were plenty of question marks about the play of Rivers entering the 2020 season but he quickly put those to rest. Rivers completed 68% of his passes for 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He showed a true command of the offense while putting on a clinic against the blitz.

With so many questions about the quarterback position last season, Rivers gave the Colts a chance to win week in a week out. He had his quintessential moments where he takes an unnecessary shot down the field or tries to fit a ball in too tight of a window.

But Rivers was arguably the MVP for the Colts throughout the 2020 season and they certainly wouldn’t have gotten as far as they did without him.

Offseason Outlook

Following the news of Rivers’ retirement, the Colts have plenty of decisions to make. Do they try to sign a stop-gap veteran? Do they trade up in the draft to grab a potential franchise quarterback? What do they have in Jacob Eason? Will Brissett return on a short deal?

These questions are vital to the process for the Colts. There may not be a lot of options readily available to them without making some big moves either via trade, free agency or the draft. But it remains the Colts’ biggest need.

Who is Colts QB Jacob Eason?

Who exactly is Jacob Eason?

Who is Jacob Eason? The 6’6″ 230-pound quarterback out of Washington has been a hot topic for Indianapolis Colts fans since being drafted last year in the fourth round.

This article’s purpose was to bring a full player profile on the young quarterback out of Washington and now with the recent news of Philip Rivers retiring, now would be the best time to learn everything about Eason, given the slight chance he could be the Week 1 starter in 2021.

In this player profile, there will be information about his high school career, his time in college, his transfer from Georgia to Washington,  the rumors about his character issues, everything to do with the draft, some of his strengths and weaknesses, and the odd situation he is in with the Colts.

Jacob Eason currently the only QB under contract for the Colts

Will Eason get a chance to shine?

Though many likely thought he would return for another season, Philip Rivers informed the Indianapolis Colts of his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday.

Now, the Colts have to find a way to replace him, and that may be a little harder to do than initially imagined. This is especially true seeing as 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason is the only quarterback under contract currently on the roster.

With Rivers riding off into the sunset to coach high school football in Alabama and Jacoby Brissett scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year arrives in March, the rookie is the only option for the Colts as it stands.

That said, it shouldn’t be expected to stay this way. The Colts have their options this offseason whether it be via trade, the 2021 NFL draft or free agency if a player like Dak Prescott becomes available.

As much as it pains to say, the Colts could even look to bring back Brissett on a short deal to bridge the gap until they find a better option. That’s a realistic option.

The bright side of this is that the Colts found out early in the offseason so they have more time to prepare and make moves if they need to.

But with Eason currently as the only quarterback on the roster under contract, the Colts face an offseason that should include some big moves at the game’s most important position.

6 QBs for Colts to consider after Philip Rivers’ retirement

How the Colts can replace Philip Rivers.

The Indianapolis Colts learned a vital piece of information Wednesday as veteran quarterback Philip Rivers announced his retirement from the NFL after 17 seasons.

Though only one of those seasons was with the Colts, Rivers made a strong impact by helping bring Indy back to the playoffs. But now, the Colts have to move on and find his replacement this offseason.

There are several ways they can go. Some are more likely than others but we will try to cover all relevant paths for Indy in searching for their new quarterback.

Whether through the draft, free agency or even a trade, here are six quarterbacks the Colts should consider this offseason:

Colts still need to find out more about QB Jacob Eason

Ballard talks Jacob Eason.

Of the many question marks the Indianapolis Colts face this offseason, the quarterback position will be at the forefront. Not only that, there are many wondering what the team has in fourth-round pick Jacob Eason.

After a redshirt year of sorts, Eason is currently the only quarterback under contract for the Colts this offseason. That said, even the Colts don’t really know what they have in the young gunslinger.

“We drafted Jacob Eason last year who we like. We have to find out a lot more about Jacob Eason. No offseason program,” said Chris Ballard in his year-end press conference. “Really the first time we saw Jacob was in training camp and there’s no preseason games, so we are trying to get ready for the season at that point. But we like what we’ve seen from Jacob. We think we really have a really good young talent in Jacob Eason.”

It still isn’t clear what will happen with Philip Rivers, who is balancing a decision of return or retirement. It is likely that Jacoby Brissett hits free agency and that his tenure with the Colts will be over.

Eason has a high ceiling, one that has intrigued the Colts since they drafted him in the fourth round. There is still a lot about his game, though, that they don’t know about. That includes processing skills, handling pressure and overall instincts given his limited work as a starter in college and without any preseason games in the NFL.

Even if the Colts bring in another quarterback or re-sign Rivers this offseason, Ballard still isn’t quite ready to name Eason the backup.

“I’m not ready to say I’m comfortable with it enough. We liked him when we drafted him. We think he’s really talented,” Ballard said. “It was such a different year (with no true offseason program) to really evaluate him in the bullets. We still have to go through that with Jacob.”

While the Colts essentially have to go through the process with Eason again in 2021, Ballard mentioned how impressed he was with the way the rookie carried himself in an odd year.

“But let me tell you this about Jacob Eason, he kept his mouth shut and he worked. He was in a great quarterback room with a lot of experience and got to take all that in,” Ballard said. “I got to visit with him for about 30 minutes the other day. I asked him, ‘How did you grow? What did you learn?’ He had a great answer that just watching Philip, Jacoby, Frank, Nick (Sirianni) and Marcus (Brady) talk ball, how they carried themselves, how they worked, how they were professionals, all of that was something that he absorbed.”

What happens this offseason will determine how much of a chance Eason will get in 2021, but the Colts still see him as a high-ceiling player.

Now, they just have to see him in action before knowing what they have in him.
