WATCH: Sam Ehlinger and the Colts speak on Commanders matchup

Ehlinger is set to make his first career NFL start this against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

The Indianapolis Colts made headlines this week as they announced a starting quarterback change moving forward. Veteran signal caller Matt Ryan is moving to the bench in favor of Sam Ehlinger.

Ehlinger is set to make his first career NFL start this Sunday against the Washington Commanders. He takes over an offense that has seen its share of struggles over the season but does not lack talent. Running back Johnathan Taylor and wide receiver Michael Pittman are two star players on the offense.

Colts’ head coach Frank Reich hopes Ehlinger can spark a new gear into his offense entering the second half of the season. Indianapolis sits just a game outside of first place in the AFC South.

The former Longhorn has a fantastic preseason campaign and is looking to be the missing piece to the Colts’ playoff push.

Ehlinger spoke on his excitement for this opportunity and how his preparation has him ready for the moment. His teammates and coaches are looking forward to seeing what Ehlinger can bring to the table.

Colts QB Carson Wentz placed on the COVID-19 list, Sam Ehlinger in line to start

Sam Ehlinger making his first career start this Sunday?

COVID-19 has been on an absolute rampage through the NFL. Players are missing games left and right, the latest to join the NFL’s COVID-19 list is Colts quarterback Carson Wentz.

Former Longhorn Sam Ehlinger is in line to start for the Colts if Wentz can not go against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. With two games left in the regular season, the Colts are looking to secure a spot in the postseason.

Despite missing a few weeks due to a knee injury, Ehlinger won the backup job over Jacob Eason after a good training camp and a couple of solid preseason performances.

During his four seasons at Texas, Ehlinger played in 46 games tallying over 11,000 passing yards and 127 total touchdowns.

Ehlinger would be the first former Longhorn quarterback to start an NFL game in his rookie season since Colt McCoy in 2010.

Former Georgia Bulldogs and Washington Huskies quarterback Jacob Eason may be in for a larger role this season with the Indianapolis Colts. Eason is starting with the first-team offense following Carson Wentz’s foot injury.

Wentz, who is looking to avoid surgery, is resting and rehabbing his foot at the moment. The Colts received Carson Wentz in a blockbuster trade from the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. The Indianapolis Colts started Philip Rivers last season, but he retired following their playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Carson Wentz was projected to start for the Colts. Now, the Colts are looking to find a suitable replacement if his rehab does not go well.

Jacob Eason has experience as a starting quarterback in college with Georgia in 2016 and with Washington in 2019. Eason has a powerful arm, but sometimes makes questionable decisions. He does not have much NFL experience.

Eason has the talent to start in the NFL. Will he be ready if Carson Wentz is out?

Fortunately for the Colts, Eason will have much of training camp and the preseason to prepare and get reps. Brett Hundley, Sam Ehlinger and Jalen Morton are Indianapolis’s other options at quarterback. Hundley has the most NFL experience.

Update: Carson Wentz elected to undergo foot surgery, which is expected to sideline him through anywhere between Indianapolis’s regular season opener and Oct. 25 (week seven of NFL season).

Former UGA WR Mecole Hardman: Colts should pass torch to Jacob Eason

Former UGA football WR Mecole Hardman says Indianapolis Colts should pass the torch to Jacob Eason with Matthew Stafford no long in the mix.

The Colts are in search of who will replace quarterback Phillip Rivers in Indianapolis next season.

The obvious answer seemed to be Georgia Bulldog great Matt Stafford, but that ship has since sailed after the former No. 1 overall pick was dealt to Los Angeles in exchange for Jared Goff and some draft picks on Saturday.

The Colts now face three options: Promote from within, look to free agency or a potential trade, or use an early draft pick on someone who can become the future of the franchise.

But let’s not forget that Indianapolis spent a mid-round pick on former Georgia and Washington quarterback Jacob Eason last year, taking the 6-foot-6 signal caller with the 122nd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Could he be an option next year for the Colts? Former Georgia wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who played two seasons with Eason in Athens, likes the first option – promote from within.

On Friday, Hardman tweeted that the Colts should look to Eason to be their guy under center next season.

After transferring from Georgia at the end of the 2017 season, Eason sat out a year due to NCAA rules and then started the 2019 season at quarterback for the Washington Huskies.

At Washington in 2019, Eason led the Huskies to an 8-5 record, throwing for 3,132 yards with 23 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Eason was projected as one of the top 5 quarterbacks in last year’s draft, but, along with former teammate Jake Fromm, was forced to wait a bit longer to hear his name called and was eventually taken in the fourth round.
