Jacob deGrom took out a full-page ad to give Mets fans the sweet goodbye they were looking for

Jacob deGrom left an extremely kind message for the Mets and their fans

Things have been quiet on the Jacob deGrom front since we found out he was signing with the Rangers a couple of weeks ago.

deGrom had been with the Mets organization for 12 years. He’s played in the big leagues for 8 of those years. The two sides have been through thick and thin together. Through that time, deGrom became one of the best pitchers to ever pick up a baseball.

So, naturally, it felt a bit weird that there was no reflection from deGrom on his time with the Mets with the fans. Up until now, that is.

deGrom took out a full-page ad in the New York Post to thank Mets fans for their time and appreciation. It was actually pretty nice.

“My family and I are forever grateful to the Mets for an incredible last 12 years and, most importantly, for believing in me. For giving me the opporutnity to play the game I love at the highest level for all these years…To the New York Mets fans — your passion, devotion and unwavering support for me, from the very beginning, has been incredible. It is humbling and apprecaited beyond words.”

Fans had been looking for something like this from deGrom for weeks now. They’re happy now that they’ve gotten it.

MLB Free Agency Tracker 2022-23: Jacob deGrom lands in Texas, Justin Verlander joins the Mets and Aaron Judge becomes a Yankee for life

We’re following the MLB offseason action all winter long

The World Series may be over but the baseball calendar marches on.

While the Houston Astros are still reveling in their 4-2 series victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, players and teams are already plotting how to take them down next season.

As the hot stove starts to heat up, the Los Angeles Dodgers are already the odds-on favorites to win the 2023 World Series, but there’s much to be decided before then—like which team is going to sign megastar Aaron Judge (update: the Yankees, of course) after one of the best contract-year performances in sports history.

But the pursuit of Judge is just one aspect of this winter’s star-studded free agent class.

As players continue opting out of their contracts and hitting the open market, we’ll continue updating the list below. You can also find updated World Series odds here as players begin to sign and lines continue to move.

Swapping Jacob deGrom for Justin Verlander actually improved the Mets’ World Series odds

Oddsmakers are over Jake.

Only days after watching starter Jacob deGrom—arguably the greatest pitcher of his generation—leave for the Texas Rangers, the New York Mets added reigning Cy Young-winner Justin Verlander on a two-year, $86 million deal.

As far as the argument for which pitcher means more for their team, it appears the Mets and Verlander have the edge.

Over at BetMGM, the Mets’ 2023 World Series odds went on a rollercoaster ride, moving from +1100 before deGrom left for Texas, to +1700 after he signed with the Rangers and then back up to +900 on Monday following the acquisition of Verlander.

Yes, that’s correct. Oddsmakers believe Verlander provides more value to the Mets than deGrom.

Here’s how the two players stack up going back to 2018:

Verlander missed two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery and all he did was come back in 2022 to win the American League Cy Young, a World Series title and pitch likely the best season of his life.
The Mets are banking on him being able to replicate that for at least two more years as he joins a rotation with former Detroit Tigers teammate Max Scherzer.
Oddsmakers certainly believe it’s possible. But the Mets haven’t won the World Series since 1986 and the National League East is reloading up and down the division once again.
Either way, it’s a positive sign for New York given how the offseason started out.

Jacob deGrom made Juan Soto look absolutely silly on this ridiculous 101 mph strike

Juan Soto tried so hard to hit this pitch but failed… in spectacular fashion.

The New York Mets know what’s on the line tonight in Game 2 of their wild-card series the San Diego Padres – their season. They must win to force a Game 3 or their offseason will begin way earlier than they or their fans would want it to.

Thankfully for the Mets they have Jacob deGrom on the mound. The righthander came out throwing absolute heat in the first inning.

Padres star Juan Soto went down swinging on three strikes that all hit over 100 mph on the radar gun. So much gas.

The first strike sent Soto to the ground. Seriously, check out that first strike and the watch in awe on the next two:

Good golly.

Those pitches were fast:

MLB fans had reactions.

Mookie Betts says Mets’ Jacob deGrom is ‘maybe the best to ever pitch’ and he isn’t wrong

Some of these Jacob deGrom stats are mind-boggling.

Since returning from injury, New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom has had tremendous success on the mound.

Last night, deGrom made his eighth appearance of the season and earned a victory against the Dodgers. Los Angeles has the best record in baseball this season, but deGrom still managed to shut down the opposing bats.

After the game, Dodgers star outfielder Mookie Betts was asked about what it was like as a batter to face someone as dominant as deGrom. Betts, who leads the NL in runs scored so far this season, gave the highest praise that you can possibly give another player.

Betts said that he didn’t even know how to answer that question because it is such a tough task. He admitted that deGrom is one of the best pitchers to ever play.

Some of the stats tell us that Betts may have a point, too. He has allowed one or fewer runs in 100 of his first 204 career stats, which ranks as the best mark in MLB history.

He has allowed the lowest WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) in MLB history since Addie Joss, who last pitched in 1910 and died in 1911.

He was also asked if there is any pitch in particular deGrom throws that is the hardest for him to hit, and he said they’re all challenging.

Based on this season, deGrom’s average slider velocity (93 mph) is the fastest in the MLB while his fastball velocity (99.3 mph) is near the top as well. He is averaging career-high speeds with his fastball, slider, and changeup.

He has also forced batters to miss on 43 percent of swings, which is third-best in the league. Even though it is incredibly challenging to hit deGrom, however, Betts did manage to launch a home run against him in the sixth inning on Wednesday:

It was just the second time Betts had gotten a hit off deGrom in his career.

However, based on the way that both the Mets and the Dodgers are playing this season, these two teams could easily face each other once again in the postseason.

Mets’ Brandon Nimmo committed stunning home run robbery to the absolute delight of Jacob deGrom

Jacob deGrom could not believe his eyes!

Brandon Nimmo just made baseball’s catch of the year, no doubt!

On Wednesday, the New York Mets were hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers in a battle of two of the NL’s top teams. With the Mets leading 2-1 at the top of the seventh, Justin Turner stepped up to bat against Jacob deGrom looking to knock home the tying run.

And Turner nearly did it, if not for Nimmo’s phenomenal catch deep in center field. In nearly the deepest part of the field, Nimmo was able to make a running leap of a grab on this blast from Turner to rob a sure-fire home run and keep the Mets ahead in the game.

Seriously, this is a catch you have to see.

Wow! And look at deGrom too, who was absolutely delighted by Nimmo’s catch that kept the Mets in the lead. Just an incredible individual effort from Nimmo on this play.

How to bet Mets against juggernaut Dodgers in Jacob deGrom’s toughest test since return

Jacob deGrom has been a force, but can he shut down the Dodgers?

Jacob deGrom is about to have his toughest test on Wednesday since returning to the New York Mets rotation in early August. He’s set to face the major league-leading Los Angeles Dodgers in just his second start against a team outside of the National League East.

DeGrom has been solid in his month of action, which includes five starts for a 3-1 record, 2.15 ERA and incredible 46 strikeouts through 29 1/3 innings. The unstoppable force will meet immovable object when his Mets clash with the the best team in baseball that also happens to be the hottest.

Right now, the books favor unstoppable force, as deGrom and the Mets are favored by 1.5 points at Tipico Sportsbook. But while I expect him to be his usual great self, taking New York against that spread is a bet you absolutely have to fade.

LA has won nine of its last 11 games, including the first game of this series against the Mets on Tuesday. That game better informs how to approach Wednesday’s matchup in Queens.

The Mets lost 4-3, struggling to produce offense in a continuing trend from the past few days. They’ve managed just six runs in their last three games combined. With Tyler Anderson on the mound for LA, I expect that to continue. He beat the Mets 6-1 in June.

Despite their win Tuesday, however, the Dodgers managed just five hits in 5 1/3 innings off Mets starter Taijuan Walker, who was solid outside of a rough third inning. LA finished with seven hits for a second straight game after requiring extra innings to top the Marlins on Monday. On Saturday, the Dodgers managed just one run on six hits.

Considering the pitching matchup and how much each team has struggled at the plate, the best bet from this game is under 6.5 runs for -105 odds. I’d even consider taking the alternate run total of under 5.5 runs for +135 odds, with a 4-1 or 3-2 final score is very reasonable to expect.

I’d also lean towards the Dodgers covering the spread, though the -170 odds don’t do much as a standalone bet. Plus money on their moneyline is a bigger swing worth considering, because if the game comes down to the bullpens, the Dodgers’ is as good as any and their offense is more likely to come up with timely hits.

The Mets and Jacob deGrom are the biggest favorites of the MLB season against the Rockies on Thursday. What could go wrong?

With the deGrom on the mound, keep the Rockies in your thoughts.

With one of the worst records in the National League, the Rockies have already had a tough year. On Thursday night, it might reach a historically low point.

Why might you ask? On the off chance you were unaware, the Mets’ Jacob deGrom is one of the best pitchers in baseball. While his time in 2022 has been limited due to a stress fracture suffered back in spring training, the two-time Cy Young Award winner remains one of baseball’s top aces. And in four starts since returning from injury, deGrom already has 37 strikeouts and a 2.31 ERA. He’s got his groove back.

Enter the Rockies, who will have to face deGrom on the road at Citi Field as the biggest consensus underdog (-450) of the entire 2022 MLB season thus far. Oh, and Colorado really struggles against right-handers on the road.

Uh-oh:

For additional context, according to Action Network, only four starting pitchers since 2005 have finished a game as a -450 favorite for their team. With his Thursday night start against the Rockies coming up, deGrom will now get to do this for the second time in his career.

In other words, the Rockies’ chances of toppling deGrom and the Mets seem impossibly high. Sure, they might still pull the upset and uncharacteristically shell deGrom. Crazier things have happened.

But I wouldn’t bet on a locked-in superstar on the mound — for one of baseball’s top squads — faltering against a hapless lineup. This matchup at Citi Field has certain “doom” written all over it for Colorado.

Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom having a deep conversation on the bench became a hilarious meme

What were these two star pitchers talking about?

MLB fans had lots of great guesses.

Things are going pretty well for the New York Mets – they’re 5.5 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East and look to be a lock to make the postseason.

They also have two of the best pitchers in the game – Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom – back and healthy, which should help them down the stretch.

During yesterday’s 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies those two star pitchers were seen having what looked like a very deep and animated conversation while passing some time on the bench. deGrom seemed really into whatever it was he was talking about.

Check this out:

What were they talking about? I have no idea. But MLB fans had lots of good guesses.
