Jaguars vs. Packers: Week 10 Jags Wire staff picks and predictions

While it’s hard to the 1-7 Jags defeating the Packers, but some of the members from the Jags Wire staff see it being closer than expected.

The Jacksonville Jaguars (1-7) will travel up north to face one of the league’s best teams in the Green Bay Packers (6-2) Sunday for a game that could get ugly. With Aaron Rodgers lining up on the opposite end of the ball and the Jags’ defense being ranked 31st overall (27th against the pass), many analysts aren’t high on the Jags’ chances — and right fully so.

Of course, as always we’ve gathered some predictions of our own at Jags Wire as the Cardiac Cats enter the brutal second half of their schedule. Here is how we see things going down Sunday afternoon as rookie Jake Luton tries to go toe-to-toe with Rodgers at the legendary Lambeau Field:

James Johnson (@Sportsgrind_Don): Packers 31, Jaguars 21

The Jags have kept it interesting their last two games, giving fans a bit of entertainment while also remaining in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes. I mean, what more could fans ask for, right?

I think this one could be close, but due to the weather as the winds are projected to hit the 24 mile per hour range. If they rely on James Robinson and follow the trend of getting him 20 carries or more as they should, they can keep this game in range though a win is unlikely.

Phil Smith (@PhiltheFilipino): Packers 35 Jaguars 17

The weather conditions in Green Bay are going to be very similar to the way this season has gone for the Jaguars, just downright miserable. However, it’s conditions like these in which a team with a power running back can possibly find some success, which means the Jags might have a slim chance thanks to James Robinson. We’ve seen the Jags keep things interesting in the last few weeks, but I expect Aaron Rodgers to carve up this secondary. The Packers have outscored opponents by 40 points in the second quarter this season, so expect it to get out of reach relatively early. From that point on, fans should have the luxury to gauge if they want to keep watching.

Daniel Griffis (@DanDGriffis): Packers 34, Jaguars 16

The outlook for Jacksonville looks bleak as the Jake Luton led Jaguars meet the Aaron Rodgers led Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The Jags are without Linder, Shenault, and Lambo, making Luton’s job increasingly difficult against the future Hall of Fame quarterback. Green Bay is without star cornerback, Jaire Alexander, but I don’t see how Luton keeps this offense on track for enough points to out duel Rodgers.

Robert Ricks (@rrickswriting): Packers 31, Jaguars 21

The Jaguars will have a really tough task at Lambeau Field with some really brutal weather expected. Aaron Rodgers is on an MVP tear, but the Jaguars will surprise in this one keeping it below two touchdowns but still coming up short.

Jacob DeLawrence (@_Jdela): Packers 34 Jaguars 24

The Jags take the trip up north to the sort of frozen tundra that is Lambeau field. The Jags are currently on a seven game losing streak that has included inconsistencies from all sides of the ball each week. This Jags also serves as a reunion of sorts as tight end Marcedes Lewis will take on the Jags for the first time since being releases. Expect Aaron Rodgers and the Pack to win a game that will somehow be closer than it should be.

Will Frost (@willfrost_): Packers 34, Jaguars 13

It’s getting tougher and tougher to predict wins every passing week. Jake Luton looked capable in his first NFL start, but it would shock the entire NFL if he was able to pull out a win away at Lambeau Field.

Another game, an another step closer to a top-3 pick. Simply put, I can’t see this one being as enjoyable to watch as the previous two.

Will the Jags-Packers Week 10 game be on TV in your area?

The Jags and Packers Week 10 game will have a pretty wide coverage radius up north as the Cardiac Cats try and pull off an upset.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will face arguably their toughest opponents of the year when they head to Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers. These two teams will enter Sunday’s game at opposite ends of the spectrum as the 1-7 Jags are at the bottom of the AFC South while the 6-2 Packers are leading the NFC North.

On one side, future Hall-of-Famer Aaron Rodgers will be taking the field with a No. 10 ranked offense that has a lot of momentum. On the other side will be rookie signal-caller Jake Luton, who will be starting in just his second NFL career game and looking for his first victory as a starter.

As Jags fans have witnessed for much of the season, kickoff will be at 1 pm EST. Instead of playing on CBS as they typically do, they will be on FOX this Sunday. Per 506 Sports, those who live in the blue shaded areas will be able to see the game locally.

Chris Myers will be handling the play-by-play duties this week while Greg Jennings and Brock Huard will join him as analysts.

When looking at the all-time series the Jags haven’t fared well against the Packers with a 2-4 record against them. The Jags’ last win against the Packers was almost a full 12 years ago in December of 2008. To find the Jags’ last win in Green Bay fans would have to go back four years before that victory in December of 2004.

The Jags are currently down as 14-point underdogs to the Packers, per BetMGM. That marks the highest spread deficit they’ve had all year.

Jags make several roster transactions before Week 10 game vs. Packers

The Jags made several elevations from their practice squad in preparation for the Green Bay Packers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a wide variety of roster transactions Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. That included the elevation of four players from their practice squad.

With linebacker Dakota Allen and receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. being ruled out on the final injury report, the Jags utilized their two standard elevation spots on Joe Giles-Harris and Terry Godwin.

Giles-Harris has spent most of his Jags tenure on their practice squad after joining them last season as an undrafted free agent. In 2019, he was activated for five games, registering a bulk of his snaps on special teams. He also was active for the Jags’ last game against the Houston Texans where he registered more snaps on special teams.

As for Godwin, this will be his first activation from the practice squad since joining the Jags last season.

The Jaguars also decided to activate offensive lineman KC McDermott and safety Doug Middleton from their practice squad.

Sunday’s game will mark McDermott’s third time on the active roster as he participated in the Jags’ games against the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals. He registered a few special teams snaps in the process but didn’t see the field for any offensive plays.

Middleton, on the other hand, will be participating in his fourth game of the season after playing in the Jags’ games against the Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, and Houston Texans (Week 9).

Lastly, the Jags activated safety Andrew Wingard from injured reserve and kicker Chase McLaughlin from the commissioner’s permission list.

Wingard’s addition isn’t a surprise after he was designated to return from IR earlier in the week. He started in three games this season for the Jags before going on IR before Week 6’s game against the Detroit Lions and will return with 25 tackles and a pick to his name.

As for McLaughlin, he was signed to the roster earlier in the week to replace Josh Lambo, who is out for the season with a gluteus medius injury. McLaughlin, a second-year player, will come into his tenure with the Jags with a 78.3% field goal conversion rate (18-of-23) and a 100% extra point attempt rate (26-of-26). He previously spent time on the active rosters of the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers.

Center Brandon Linder, safety Josh Jones to miss Jags’ Week 10 game vs. Packers

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they will be without two more key players when they travel to Green Bay Sunday. Those players will be starting center Brandon Linder (back injury) and safety Josh Jones (chest injury). OL Brandon Linder will …

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they will be without two more key players when they travel to Green Bay Sunday. Those players will be starting center Brandon Linder (back injury) and safety Josh Jones (chest injury).

This news comes after Linder surfaced on the final injury report as questionable with a back injury. He was listed as a non-participant in practice for Wednesday and Friday, but was limited on Thursday.

Playing in Linder’s place will be Tyler Shatley, who has already started in three games this season in the interior for the Jags. Those games came against the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, and Los Angeles Chargers.

As for Jones he was limited all week, but was ruled questionable on the final report and will be headed to injured reserve. He shared time with rookie Daniel Thomas last week at safety against the Houston Texans. As a result, Thomas could get the nod this week for the start, or the Jags could go to second-year player Andrew Wingard, who was activated off injured reserve Saturday.

Jones won’t be eligible to return for another three games as a result of going on IR. That means he won’t be eligible for activation until Week 13’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Spread, money line, and total for Jags vs. Packers see a change

The Jags and Packers will be dealing with some windy conditions Sunday and that has seemingly resulted in some odd changes for the game.

The spread for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ and Green Bay Packers’ upcoming game has once again changed and is currently at a 14-point margin with Aaron Rodgers and company still down as the favorites. When we previewed the game on Wednesday, the spread was a half point lower as the Jags were 13.5 underdogs.

The money line, which was previously +600 on Wednesday, increased to a +660 figure. That means a bet of $100 on the Jags would net a $660 profit for a bettor.

As for the over/under figure, it decreased to 47.7 points. It was previously set at 51.5.

These changes come as the Jags and Packers are expecting iffy weather conditions at Lambeau Field as the forecast is projecting a cold and windy day in Green Bay. The temperature is projected to be 37° and the wind is projected to hit 25 miles per hour. Green Bay is also expecting showers Sunday morning, but the precipitation percentage will drop to 5% by the time the game begins at 1 p.m. eastern standard time.

Marcedes Lewis on getting over the Jags cutting him: ‘I didn’t understand it for a long time’

Marcedes Lewis says he treat Sunday’s game against his old team (the Jags) like any other game and that there is no animosity on his end

One of the most disappointing moments to happen at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ current front office is how they handled the release of former tight end Marcedes Lewis. Back in 2018, the team abruptly moved on from the veteran without warning and the fans let it be known they weren’t happy with how it was handled in addition to Lewis.

Fast-forward to present-day and Lewis will now suit up against the Jags with the Green Bay Packers Sunday, which is going to present an odd feeling to Jags fans. However, it may not be as awkward to Lewis who said he has no hard feelings and has moved on this week, although it admittedly took a year to get over how things were handled.

Lewis has been open about wanting to retire a Jag despite how things went. At the end of the day, he’s well aware that Duval is where it all began and is also the place where his best days came as a player. However, that still doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve a shot at redemption against the franchise that hasn’t had a lot of good luck since his release and maybe even hauls in a touchdown on them Sunday.

While with the Packers Lewis has been primarily used as a blocker, but does have 32 yards and two touchdowns on the season. With that being the case, don’t be shocked to see Aaron Rodgers take a shot at him in the red zone, especially with the issues the team has had in coverage under coordinator Todd Wash.

Jags final Week 10 injury report: Shenault ruled out, Linder ruled questionable

The Jags will be without star rookie receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. for the first time this season as he’s dealing with a hamstring injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars might be without several key contributors when they travel to Lambeau Field. We already reported the news that Week 9 starting defensive tackle Doug Costin (concussion) would be out and the final injury report revealed that star rookie receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (hamstring) would be joining him.

The Jags also officially ruled out quarterback Gardner Minshew II (thumb), running back Devine Ozigbo (hamstring), and linebacker Dakota Allen (ankle), all of whom were expected to miss Sunday’s game against Green Bay after not practicing.

The Jags also ruled center Brandon Linder (back) and safety Josh Jones (chest) as questionable. If either or one can’t go the Jags would have to start Tyler Shatley in Linder’s place and possibly rookie Daniel Thomas in Jones’ place. The Jags could also start Andrew Wingard in Jones’ place, too, if he’s activated to the active roster off injured reserve.

With Costin out, the Jags will likely go back to the player who he replaced Week 9 as a starter in Taven Bryan. As for Shenault, the Jags will now have DJ Chark Jr., Chris Conley, Keelan Cole, and Collin Johnson as their top-4 receivers. If the Jags want to call up a player from the practice squad to give them a fifth receiver Trey Quinn, Terry Godwin, and rookie Josh Hammond are available.

Of course, starting in Minshew’s place for the second consecutive week will be rookie Jake Luton. He had a pretty respectable showing in his debut against the Houston Texans garnering a 68.4% completion rate (26-of-38) for 304 yards, a touchdown, and a pick.

Behind Enemy Lines: Week 10 Q&A with Packers Wire

With the Jags taking a trip to Lambeau, Jags Wire got a little bit of intel on the Packers through Packers Wire’s Zach Kruse.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have arrived to the hardest point of their 2020 schedule and it will start with a trip to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers.
At the midway point of the season, both teams are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Of course, the 1-7 Jags are enduring a seven-game skid and are in last place in the AFC South while the Packers are leading their division with a 6-2 record.
To help get some intel on Aaron Rodgers and company, we had a chat with Packers Wire editor Zach Kruse this week. Here are five questions he was kind enough to answer concerning the red hot Packers:

Jaguars Wire: Matt LaFleur is someone Jags fans are familiar with after his tenure with the Titans. How has he been for the Packers since becoming their head coach?

Zach Kruse: The Packers have won 20 of the 26 games coached by LaFleur over the last two seasons, so his career in Green Bay is off to a terrific start. He’s done a commendable job remaking the team in his image, and his new-age offensive scheme has been a big hit, especially with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The partnership between the two has been fantastic. Also, the Packers have scored on every single opening drive this season, which is usually a good barometer of coaching ability, especially for an offensive-focused coach, and they haven’t lost back-to-back games in either of his first two seasons. The hiring has been a big success so far.

JW: Aaron Rodgers is one of the best to ever do it obviously and will be for the next few years. Could you discuss the season he is having so far?

ZK: Rodgers said all offseason that he was finally comfortable in the offense, and it’s shown up in a big way on the field. He’s thrown 24 touchdown passes and is right in the hunt for the MVP at the midway point of 2020.

LaFleur’s offense has allowed him opportunities to get the ball out of his hands quick and on time but also opportunities to attack down the field. It’s been a good mix. Additionally, Rodgers has been deadly in the red zone. He’s also avoiding turnover plays (just two interceptions) and sacks. Through eight games, Rodgers leads the NFL in passer rating and is on pace for what would be a career-high 48 touchdown passes.

JW: What are some weaknesses with this Packers team that the Jags may can exploit?

ZK: The run defense is an obvious place to start. Physical, run-first teams have given the Packers problems in recent years. The personnel at defensive line and inside linebacker isn’t great, and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine generally prefers having more defensive backs on the field to protect against the pass.

The Jaguars will have to run the ball effectively to win the game on Sunday. Shorten the game, protect the ball, and keep Rodgers on the sideline. It might not be the most efficient football but it’s certainly one way to pressure one of the Packers’ stress points.

JW: Who are some under-the-radar names to watch from this Packers team on offense and defense?

ZK: On offense, watch for RB Tyler Ervin and TE Robert Tonyan. The Packers love using Ervin as the fly motion man in LaFleur’s scheme to stress defenses horizontally before the snap. He turned 12 touches into 72 yards against the 49ers and could play a big role again on Sunday. Tonyan is a big-play tight end with five touchdown catches in eight games. He can win down the field in this offense, especially if teams focus coverage on Davante Adams.

On defense, keep an eye out for safety Darnell Savage. He nearly had an interception of Nick Mullens last week. Expect the Packers to use him to prevent big plays vertically but also to help against the run. He might be the fastest player on the roster.

JW: What’s your final predictions for the outcome of the game?

ZR: The forecasted conditions at Lambeau Field for Sunday are starting to give me pause. It could be wet, windy and potentially even cold.

The Packers didn’t handle poor conditions a couple of weeks ago against the Vikings, and more bad weather could help level the playing field on Sunday. I still like the Packers to win, probably comfortably. If conditions are manageable, the Packers could score a lot of points on the league’s 31st ranked scoring defense.

I’ll go Packers 31, Jaguars 17.

Jaguars vs. Packers injury report for Thursday: Wingard upgraded to full participation

The Jags could be on their way to getting Andrew Wingard back, who is one of their best special teamers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a few changes to their injury report with the most notable occurring for tight end Tyler Eifert (neck) and safety Andrew Wingard (core muscle), who were both upgraded to full participation.

[lawrence-related id=38358]

Center Brandon Linder (back), was also upgraded from non-participation on Wednesday to limited while receiver DJ Chark and left tackle Cam Robinson were added to the report for an illness (not COVID-19 related) and knee injury, respectively. However, it’s worth noting that the Jags put Robinson on the injury report late last week for the same reason, but he was still able to suit up against Houston.

Wingard’s name has been the most important to watch because all of the other aforementioned names are expected to play, while his situation is to be determined. After going on injured reserve before Week 6’s game against the Detroit Lions, he was designated to return yesterday, which means the Jags have 20 days to activate him. With him going from limited to full participation, it appears that may be in the Jags’ plans before they head up to Green Bay to battle the Packers.

Jake Luton excited for his opportunity to battle Aaron Rodgers

Like most quarterbacks, Jake Luton grew up watching Aaron Rodgers and now has a grand opportunity to go one-on-one with him Sunday.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Jake Luton will be starting in his second consecutive game Sunday as the team travels to the legendary Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers. That will also present the rookie with a chance to go one-on-one with Aaron Rodgers, who is a signal-caller Luton looked up to throughout his career.

“It’s pretty surreal,” Luton said of his chance to play against Rodgers. “He’s a guy I have a lot of respect for, was a big fan of growing up and a huge fan of his game. A lot of things that he does, no one else really can do. He’s a wizard with the football in a lot of ways. Like I said, [I have] a lot of respect for him. It’ll be really exciting to get out there and get to play ball against him.”

It’s going to be a challenge for Luton to keep pace with Rodgers as his second start will come against a significantly better defense than Houston’s. The Packers will enter Week 10 as the No. 11 ranked unit on defense allowing an average of 345.4 yards a game. Additionally, the aura of Lambeau Field is like any other, though there won’t be any fans, which could make things a tad easier for the rookie.

“Yeah for sure,” Luton said when asked if he wishes fans could attend Sunday’s game. “It’s somewhere I’ve dreamed of playing. Lambeau Field is pretty historic, pretty awesome. It’d be real cool if it was rocking, a lot of people cheering against you. So, it’ll be a little different with it being empty but I’m sure it’ll still be awesome. It’ll be a cool moment to step out on the field and take it all in.”

Luton was able to accumulate a 68.4% (26-of-38) completion rate for 304 yards, a touchdown through the air, one on the ground, and a pick against the Texans. While his performance was certainly respectable, the Texans left opportunities to pick him off on the field. That said, if Luton can evaluate his mistakes from Week 9, he could be up for a solid day against the Packers, which may give him a huge boost towards remaining the Jags’ QB1 for 2020.
