Contract details for new Colts DE Isaac Rochell

Contract details for Rochell.

The Indianapolis Colts signed their first outside free agent of the offseason in the form of defensive end Isaac Rochell, who will be joining the team on a one-year deal.

The details of that contract have been released as Rochell will be earning a one-year, $2.5 million deal. He’s getting $1.25 million guaranteed with a $250,000 signing bonus. His salary is for $1.74 million with $1 million of that guaranteed. It also includes per-game active bonuses of $510,000 along with some sacks incentives.

Officially, Rochell will have a $1.25 million cap hit for the Colts.

This is a depth signing for the Colts even though it was their first big one of the offseason. Rochell will be working behind Kemoko Turay and Ben Banogu while Tyquan Lewis could see time on the edge as well. If the Colts draft an edge prospect, Rochell will be battling for one of the final spots in the room.

The Colts also re-signed cornerback Xavier Rhodes to a one-year deal on Saturday evening.

5 things to know about Colts new DE Isaac Rochell

What to know about the new Colts DE.

The Indianapolis Colts made their first move of free agency bringing in their first outside player by signing defensive end Isaac Rochell.

The Colts have had a major need to add to the edge rusher position. Denico Autry signed with the Titans while Justin Houston and Al-Quadin Muhammad remain free agents. The Colts weren’t able to snag any of the big names on the market either.

Here are five things to know about the new defensive end:

Colts to sign DE Isaac Rochell to one-year deal

Colts make their first move in free agency.

The Indianapolis Colts are signing free-agent defensive end Isaac Rochell to a one-year deal, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Rochell has played four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers and was a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft out of Notre Dame.

Rochell, 25, has 9.5 sacks in 51 career games.

The Colts have been expectedly quiet during the start of free agency but this marks their first move in bringing in an outside free agent. Adding to the edge is a necessity this offseason and Rochell is likely to compete for that Denico Autry role switching between the edge and interior.

The Colts have plenty of salary-cap space to make moves but this officially kicks off their free agency.

Report: Chargers not tendering DL Isaac Rochell

Isaac Rochell likely isn’t viewed as a scheme fit for the Chargers.

The Chargers will not tender defensive lineman Isaac Rochell, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Rochell, the team’s seventh-round pick of the 2017 NFL draft, is a restricted free agent.

He still could return to Los Angeles, just not on the restricted free agent tender.

Rochell is coming off one of his best season as a pro, where he totaled 26 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a tackle for loss.

Rochell was the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee in 2020.

Based on decision not to tender Rochell means that head coach Brandon Staley likely doesn’t see him as a scheme fit in the new system he is implementing.

Watch: Four Notre Dame Chargers lack any knowledge of ‘Rudy’

When football wraps up, you’ve got to fill the void somehow.

When football wraps up, you’ve got to fill the void somehow. In the case of the Los Angeles Chargers, you put together a show to help your fans get through the doldrums of the offseason. Would you believe that four Notre Dame alumni play for the Chargers? It only made sense for an episode about Notre Dame featuring Jerry Tillery, Drue Tranquill, Isaac Rochell and Alohi Gilman to come about:

The whole episode is 14 minutes, 40 seconds long, so if you don’t have that kind of time, you can be forgiven. However, you should at least spare 53 seconds to watch them commit the ultimate sin for anyone who’s put on an Irish uniform since 1993. Yes, they show their ignorance when it comes to Rudy, and the Chargers’ Twitter handle appropriately calls out the Irish for not educating them where they should have:

Look, if a modern Notre Dame player hasn’t seen Knute Rockne, All American, it’s bad but somewhat forgivable as that movie has somewhat fallen out of the public consciousness. However, Rudy remains steadfastly a part of pop culture, and it’s absolutely required viewing for anyone who commits to the program. Otherwise, you might as well take your business elsewhere.

Notre Dame grads nominated for NFL ‘Man of the Year’ Award

A pair of former Notre Dame football players were recognized Sunday for community service as they were nominated for the Walter Payton Award

2020 hasn’t been a season to remember for either Dallas Cowboys or Los Angeles Chargers as the two enter Week 14 both at 3-9 and play out the proverbial round.

It was however a good day for a pair of former Notre Dame players though, as linebacker Jaylon Smith of the Cowboys and defensive end Isaac Rochell of the Chargers were both announced today as “Walter Payton Man of the Year” nominees.

From Chargers.com on Rochell;
But in a year like 2020, he took serving the community to new heights. Whether it was providing $5,000 worth of groceries for roughly 45 families before Thanksgiving, funding meals to those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, taking it upon himself to sponsor wishes through local Make-A-Wish chapters, or rallying his teammates to support the continual call for social justice, Rochell led the charge to do work that goes beyond the stat line.

From DallasCowboys.com on Smith:
“The Dallas Cowboys are proud to name Jaylon Smith as our 2020 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year candidate,” said Charlotte Jones, Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer. “Jaylon exemplifies every quality that this award celebrates. He has a light that he wants to share and shine on others that is rare. We are excited to see what more he can accomplish through his work with minority entrepreneurs and the many other endeavors that he supports.”

Jerome Bettis, Dave Duerson and Joe Theismann are the only three Notre Dame players to win the “Man of the Year” Award while several other have been nominated by their respective teams over the years.

Chargers to start EDGE Isaac Rochell vs. Falcons

The Chargers need to find a way to generate more pressure.

Outside of edge defender Joey Bosa, there has hardly been that much pressure generated on opposing quarterbacks.

Following EDGE Melvin Ingram being placed on the injured reserve last month, the Chargers have experimented with Uchenna Nwosu and Jerry Tillery at the position, but the results haven’t been inspiring.

In hopes of generating a spark, Los Angeles has decided to promote 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee Isaac Rochell to starter this weekend against the Falcons.

Coach Anthony Lynn said Rochell will play big end, the position primarily played by Bosa, while Bosa plays LEO and Nwosu plays strongside linebacker in base packages, like he did last week. Tillery will rotate in.

Lynn cited to Tillery’s penalties that have been ongoing as of late as one of the reasons for the change. He didn’t go into detail as to why Nwosu isn’t getting extended reps, but his shoulder injury could be a reason why.

Rochell, a seventh-round pick of the 2017 NFL draft, has 16 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss this season.

With Ingram set to hit free agency and the team experimenting with other edge defenders in the final stretch of the season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Chargers address the position in the first couple of rounds in the 2021 NFL draft.

Chargers’ Joey Bosa still in concussion protocol

Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa has not played the last two games.

As of Wednesday, Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol, per coach Anthony Lynn.

Bosa suffered his concussion back in Week 8 against the Broncos, which has lingered on and has forced him to miss the last two games.

Without Bosa in the starting lineup, the pass rush has stalled, only amassing one sack against the Raiders and Dolphins.

In seven games, Bosa has tallied 18 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

If Bosa remains out this week, Jerry Tillery and Isaac Rochell would once again be in line to handle the team’s base end duties in Week 11 against the Jets.
