Purdue knocks off No. 2 Iowa

Down goes No. 2!

Back on September 18 Notre Dame improved to 3-0 on the then young season with a 27-13 victory over Purdue in South Bend.  It wasn’t the prettiest or most impressive of performances but it was a win nonetheless.

Right now Iowa is wishing they had an unimpressive win against the Boilermakers instead of what actually happened as Purdue walked into Kinnick Stadium on Saturday and handed No. 2 Iowa a 24-7 defeat, Iowa’s first of the year.

Aidan O’Connell threw for 375 yards and two scores for Purdue while wide receiver David Bell hauled in 11 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown.

The Boilermakers are now 4-2 on the year while Iowa falls to 6-1.

Four changes Notre Dame should make this bye week

Notre Dame’s CFP chances not entirely dead yet according to FiveThirtyEight

So you’re telling me there’s a chance?

No. 14 Notre Dame’s loss to Cincinnati for all intents and purposes ended the Fighting Irish dream of getting back to the College Football Playoff for a third time in four seasons.  Logic would tell us that there is simply too much to have to overcome for Brian Kelly and his squad to have that happen.

However, just what kind of chances does Notre Dame have in making the seemingly impossible become possible?

FiveThirtyEight has put together a formula to project each team’s odds at making the College Football Playoff and gives you the chance to see each team’s odds if they’re to win their next game or win out.

Here’s who the formula says are the odds on favorites to make the CFP and win the national title as we get a look at Notre Dame and the rest of college football’s chances entering week seven:

Data analysts reveal Alabama’s statistical chance to make CFP

The numbers have been ran. Here’s what the math says on the Crimson Tide’s CFP hopes.

The Alabama Crimson Tide are no longer the top-ranked team in the nation following a devastating loss on the road to an unranked Texas A&M team. Now, the Crimson Tide are on the outside looking in with regards to the College Football Playoff as the No. 5 ranked team.

FiveThirtyEight, a data firm, reveals the statistical likelihood of Alabama making their way back into the top-four to make the playoff and compete for national championship No. 19.

According to the numbers, Nick Saban and Alabama have a 29% chance to win the SEC title, a 40% chance to make the playoff and a 15% chance to win the national championship.

Alabama has the third highest chance to make the playoff, but the second-best chance to win the national title.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow along with Alabama’s push in the second half of the season to make the College Football Playoff.

CBS Sports makes CFP projections after Alabama loss

CFP projections — see who CBS Sports has Georgia playing in the semifinal

Following Alabama’s upset loss to the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, America has a new, unquestioned No. 1 team.

The Georgia Bulldogs are 6-0, have beaten back-to-back ranked programs by a combined score of 71-10 and have another ranked meeting this weekend with the Kentucky Wildcats.

Then-ranked No. 4 Penn State fell to Iowa Hawkeyes last weekend. Alabama’s loss allowed Iowa to move up to No. 2 in the nation. Oklahoma and Cincinnati, though neither had terribly impressive victories, climbed one spot as well to No. 3 and 4.

The College Football Playoff rankings are not officially released until November 2, but we are starting to get a pretty clear picture of how things should look when the initial rankings are revealed.

CBS Sports released its bowl projections following a crazy Week 6 and the outlet has the Bulldogs ranked No. 1, meaning it will take on the No. 4 team in the playoff semifinal from the Orange Bowl.

Here’s how CBS Sports projects the playoff to look…

ORANGE BOWL – College Football Playoff semifinal – December 31 – #1 vs #4

No. 1 Georgia vs No. 4 Cincinnati

This would be a dream scenario for Georgia. Nothing against Cincinnati, but talk about a free ride to the national championship game.

COTTON BOWL – College Football Playoff semifinal – December 31 – #2 vs #3

No. 2 Iowa vs No. 3 Oklahoma

This one would be interesting. Oklahoma has not looked worthy all season of its high ranking, yet the Sooners still have a 0 in the loss column. Iowa has looked good, but has never been here before.

Either way, I don’t see any of these teams being able to hang with Georgia.

Notre Dame stagnant in latest USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The Irish are steady in the same spot as last week but plenty of movement around them

What a night that was, with Irish quarterback Jack Coan going from the goat to the hero in a matter of a few quarters and Notre Dame retained their ranking from last week in the updated USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

[listicle id=35709]

It wasn’t easy for the Irish last night, they had to battle all 40-minutes but it was worth it. Kicker Jonathan Doerer was clutch once again, nailing the game-winning field goal with under a minute remaining in the contest.

[listicle id=35720]

Around the country there were some big time upsets, No. 1 Alabama lost to unranked Texas, A&M, No. 10 BYU did the same falling at home to Boise State. The Red River Rivalry was another fantastic game, that saw Spencer Rattle getting replaced and true freshman Caleb Williams engineering a comeback victory for the Sooners over Texas.

[listicle id=35772]

In the top-5 matchup of Big Ten teams, No. 3 Iowa came back at home to defeat No. 4 Penn State. Even though some of the teams inside the top-10 lost, they didn’t drop enough for Notre Dame to really make a move north in the polls. There was however a new No. 1 team.

Here is the latest Coaches Poll, with last week’s ranking in parenthesis.

1 – Georgia (2)

2 – Iowa (3)

3 – Oklahoma (5)

4 – Cincinnati (6)

5 – Alabama (1)

6 – Ohio State (7)

7 – Michigan (8)

8 – Penn State (4)

9 – Michigan State (11)

10 – Oregon (9)

11 – Kentucky (14)

12 – Oklahoma State (12)

13 – Notre Dame (13)

14 – Ole Miss (17)

15 – Coastal Carolina (15)

16 – Wake Forest (20)

17 – Florida (18)

18 – Texas A&M (NR)

19 – Arkansas (16)

20 – BYU (10)

21 –  NC State (22)

22 – Arizona State (25)

23 –  SMU (24)

24 – San Diego State (NR)

25 – Clemson (21)

What CFP rankings would like if released after Week 6

What the CFP rankings would look like if released today…

The College Football Playoff committee does not shy away from discussing the importance of having an elite resume when deciding a team’s ranking.

And now that we have made it through six weeks of the 2021 college football season, some teams’ resumes are beginning to separate themselves from others.

With an Alabama loss on Saturday to an unranked Texas A&M, the Crimson Tide are our biggest losers of the weekend.

With that loss, it leaves the Georgia Bulldogs as the unquestioned No. 1.

But after Georgia, it’s not really all that close.

Penn State lost to Iowa in a great game, Michigan barely beat Nebraska, Oklahoma came back to beat Texas and Georgia had a blowout road win over a top-20 Auburn team.

Here we give a look at how we would rank the top 10 teams if the College Football Playoff rankings came out after an exciting Week 6.

The initial round of rankings will be released on Nov. 2.

Wisconsin still has a real shot at the Big Ten West if a few things happen today

Wisconsin still has a real shot at the Big Ten West if a few things happen today

Wisconsin was expected to capture the Big Ten West and take another at a Big Ten title entering the season.

Things have obviously not gone according to plan. The team sits 0-2 in Big Ten play and 1-3 overall—two games behind No. 3 Iowa in the Big Ten West.

A lot will need to go right for the Badgers to reverse course and rise back to the top of the division. A good sign for Paul Chryst’s team, though, is a lot of Big Ten play is still on the horizon including a battle with old friend Bret Bielema in Champaign, Illinois today.

Wisconsin still has a real mathematical shot at the Big Ten West. It sounds crazy to say after a disappointing start, but if the team gets some help today it will be back to controlling its own destiny.

[listicle id=36923]

What’s that help? No. 4 Penn State needs to go into Iowa, City and take down No. 3 Iowa.

If that happens and Wisconsin wins against Illinois the Badgers will be one game behind the Hawkeyes with a matchup between the two still to come in a few weeks. That would mean the Badgers would then have a chance at winning out in-conference and capturing the division title.

Wisconsin needs to get better play from the offensive line, consistent play from quarterback Graham Mertz and continued dominance on the defensive side of the football.

For Badger fans, today’s rooting interests are clear: Wisconsin needs to take care of business against Illinois and Penn State needs to beat Iowa.

Enjoy your college football Saturday.

ESPN FPI sees more trouble ahead for the Wisconsin Badgers

ESPN FPI sees more trouble ahead for the Wisconsin Badgers

ESPN FPI predicted weeks of disappointment were ahead for the 2021 Wisconsin Badgers after their Week 2 victory vs. Eastern Michigan.

The forecast at the time included losses to Michigan and Iowa and a final regular-season record of 9-3.

Well, the outlook has grown increasingly grim since Wisconsin’s bye week. The Badgers dropped the contest against Notre Dame in Chicago thanks to a fourth-quarter collapse, let Michigan win its first game at Camp Randall since 2001 and now sit in last place in the Big Ten West.

ESPN FPI projections are following that outlook, as they now see Wisconsin losing to some of its Big Ten West rivals.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Penn State vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

How is Iowa doing this? Lots and lots and lots of takeaways.

The Hawkeye D started the season by forcing three Indiana turnovers. It followed it up by making Iowa State sad with four takeaways. Last week against Maryland, it came up with six interceptions and seven turnovers in all in a 51-14 blowout.

Penn State has turned it over three times all year – one in each of the last three games. +6 on the year in turnover margin, it doesn’t have a problem with mistakes.

Iowa doesn’t do a whole lot to move the chains, it’s got one of the most inefficient passing games in the Big Ten, and the ground game is only averaging 126 yards per game. This isn’t a team that’s going to take a whole lot of chances – the O has had things easy thanks to the mistakes generated by the D.

As long as the Penn State offense isn’t screwing up, the defense that’s third in the nation in scoring defense and second in red zone D will take care of the rest.

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Iowa Will Win

The Penn State running game isn’t doing enough.

It got past 200 yards against Ball State and Indiana, but it went nowhere against Wisconsin and Auburn, averaging under four yards per carry overall. Iowa licks its chops at teams that have to throw to win.

The Hawkeye defense has been a force, but the offense deserves a little credit, too. It’s been inconsistent, and QB Spencer Petras doesn’t hit enough big plays, but the passing game worked against Maryland and went over 200 yards in each of the last three games.

Penn State is awful on third downs – converting just 36% of its chances – doesn’t have the pass rush to take advantage of an Iowa line that allows a few too many plays in the backfield, and it doesn’t control the clock.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are battle tested, and both bring strong enough defenses to take over. At home, though, Iowa will break through with a big performance in its biggest test yet.

Penn State isn’t going to get the meltdown mistakes Wisconsin gave away in the season-opener in Madison, and it won’t get away with the lack of a steady ground attack like it did against Auburn.

But Iowa won’t be able to count on three big turnovers to make up for its own offense that’s last in the Big Ten.

There’s no need to get any popcorn ready, but settle in for one of the most intense, hard-hitting games you’ll see all year.

Iowa will have the ball for 34 minutes and keep control of the game. Penn State will be clean right up until it needs a big late drive, and that’s when the one gamechanging turnover will come.

Here is how Herbstreit’s rankings look after week five:

  1. Alabama
  2. Georgia
