Notre Dame’s lack of depth at wide receiver is well documented. All even the least informed fan had to do understand this was to watch the [autotag]Fiesta Bowl[/autotag] when just three scholarship receivers were targeted while quarterback Jack Coan threw 68 passes.
One of those three is gone to the NFL as [autotag]Kevin Austin[/autotag], Jr. had 105 receiving yards that game and led Notre Dame in receiving yardage for the year. Former walk-on returner [autotag]Matt Salerno[/autotag] received a scholarship this off-season but Notre Dame’s outlook at receiver still lacks any sort of depth whatsoever.
It just so happens a graduate student who received all Big Ten honors a year ago entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, and that player is from just outside Chicago.
[autotag]Charlie Jones[/autotag] began his collegiate career at Buffalo where he hauled in 18 receptions for 395 yards (21.9 ypr) and three touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2018. He then transferred to Iowa where he played the last two seasons, hauling in 21 receptions for 323 yards (15.4 ypr) and three more scores last season.
Jones was also Iowa’s primary returner on both punts (7.7 ypr) and kickoffs (25.4 ypr) last season and was named the Big Ten’s Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year.
Jones attended Deerfield High School in Illinois, located just north of Chicago.
Iowa wide receiver and return specialist Charlie Jones has entered the transfer portal, @on3sports has learned.
Was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a returner. Also posted 21 catches for 323 yards and three touchdowns.https://t.co/xWsWSZF8sP
One would assume that [autotag]Chasni Stuckey[/autotag], [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag], and the rest of the Notre Dame staff are already reaching out to try and patchwork some of the receiver issues ahead of the 2022 season.
To my understanding this Charlie Jones is in no way related to the Charlie Jones whose golden pipes played at least a small part in me becoming a Notre Dame fan at a young age.
C.J. Beathard will be joining his former Iowa and San Francisco 49ers teammate, George Kittle, for this year’s Tight End University event with many other notable players.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are currently in the second phase of their offseason workout program, which means one phase will remain before they take a break before training camp. However, as we’ve seen in recent years, many players find some way to remain busy when it comes to preparing for the season.
Players from around the league typically use the downtime before training camp to join players from around the league who play the same positions for what is labeled as “university” events. That will be the case for the tight end position as notables like George Kittle, Travis Kelce, and several others are in the process of putting together a Tight End University in Nashville for next month. And while it isn’t known if any Jags tight ends will be attending, there will be at least one player representing the team in quarterback C.J. Beathard.
In a recent interview with Pro Football Talk, Kittle told NFL journalist Mike Florio that Beathard would be one of the quarterbacks attending alongside Nick Mullens, Trey Lance, and possibly Zach Wilson and Josh Allen.
“I’ve got three [quarterbacks] confirmed for you,” Kittle said. “I’ve got my guy, C.J. Beathard. I’ve got my guy, Nick Mullens. I’ve got my guy, Trey Lance. He’s coming down to TEU. … Zach Wilson is at about 99 percent. He’s trying to decide if he wants to come back from Cabo or not. I was like, ‘Zach, you’re going to come back from Cabo.’ … And then the last one I’m working on: Josh Allen is trying to see if he can make it work.”
Kittle and Beathard attended the University of Iowa together from 2012-16. Both ended up being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 and were teammates there until 2020. The Jags then signed Beathard in 2021, and he’s been their QB2 since.
Last year, Jags tight end Chris Manhertz attended the tight end gathering after signing with the Jags last Spring. It’s unknown if he, Evan Engram, or any other Jags tight ends will attend, but it shouldn’t be long before the list is revealed.
The offers are starting to pick up for this Midwest star
The Irish have a very firm grasp of which prospects in the Midwest will be future stars. They offered one of them earlier today, as Illinois wide receiver Cam Williams was given a verbal scholarship after a call from offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.
I have seen Williams live since his freshman year and he impressed me then. Later seeing him during his sophomore campaign at Glenbard South and it just confirmed what I saw during the camp, with pads on Williams is a high level prospect. Standing at six-foot-two-inches and 180-pounds, the rising junior glides across the field and is a precision route runner.
He grabbed an offer from Iowa during his freshman year and Williams has not stopped since then. Currently holding other offers from Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Missouri and others, recruiting is starting to heat up for Williams.
If the next season began today, Notre Dame would have a whole lot of guards but not many forwards. Heck, it was like that this past season. However, could a power forward from Massachusetts help rectify that problem in a couple of years? Say hello to T.J. Power, a 2023 recruit who has received an offer from the Irish:
After a great talk with Coach Brey, I am extremely blessed to receive an offer Notre Dame ☘️!! pic.twitter.com/4MMMtVfYnB
Power attends Worcester Academy and lights it up for that school, but he also plays for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club, of which Bonzie Colson is an alumnus. He’s done pretty well for that team lately, too:
And he’s catching the attention of at least one recruiting analyst:
Composite four-star forward TJ Power has been the best player on the floor in this one. The catch and shoot jumpers are falling and the footwork when operating inside the arc is beyond tactical & exquisite. He continues to trend upward as he has left a huge imprint on this one. https://t.co/JK11yNrqLR
So far, the Irish will have to battle with the following ACC rivals for Power’s services: Miami, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. Others in contention include Iowa, Penn State, Oklahoma, Marquette and Georgetown. A decision likely won’t come for a while, but let’s hope for the best.

The Irish have done very well on the recruiting trail since Marcus Freeman arrived on campus and it has not changed one bit since he was elevated to the head coaching position. Actually, it has improved, a drastic change in philosophy since the Brian Kelly era.
The Blue vs. Gold game, or any spring game, is a big draw for many prospects and Freeman wanted to take full advantage of the environment. He did exactly that by securing the first class of 2024 commitment in defensive lineman Brandon Davis-Swain. The six-foot-four-inch and 230-pound four-star end from Michigan went to Twitter to make his intentions known.
After long long thinking I would like TO SAY THAT IM COMMITTED TO @NDFootball and I would like to thank god first and my family and friends for being there with me through the good and bad times GO IRISH ☘️ @CoachWash56pic.twitter.com/hf2y0oi08B
Davis-Swain had already garnered a lot of interest, holding offers from Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Ole Miss and Tennessee. Although early in the process, having that kind of Power-5 interest is extremely impressive. He becomes the first 2024 commit for the Irish as they are now off and running in that cycle.

So where’s the curveball going to come from this year in the Big Ten?
Last year it was Michigan getting over the hump – at least, it did after losing to a surprising Michigan State team – the year before it was Indiana rising up and Northwestern getting to the Big Ten Championship for the second time in three years, and this year it’s …
Nebraska? Maybe. Maryland? To a point, potentially, or …
Maybe it’s back to Ohio State and 13 other teams.
There’s a whole lot of fun to be had with all 14 teams looking either improved or good enough to make a reasonable push for a strong season. Of course, that’s not how this all works, but it’s Spring. It’s a time for hope.
The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …
With the history of the Big Ten there are loads and loads of Hall of Famers and all-time great NFL draft picks to choose from. So who are the best of all-time coming from the conference?
This isn’t a list of the top pro players to come from the Big Ten schools – these are the best draft picks.
The guys who had great careers for someone other than teams that drafted them get knocked down a peg, or aren’t on the list at all. For example, Purdue’s Drew Brees was obviously an all-time NFL great, but for New Orleans, not the Chargers.
The goal for any draft pick is to get a player who performs at a high level for a long period of time, so longevity matters over one short burst of greatness.
It has been no secret that the Midwest’s best state for high school talent is Ohio. It is a state has has a large amount of players, some of which can play anywhere in the country. Lakota East 2023 offensive lineman Austin Siereveld is one of those players.
Earlier this evening the massive six-foot-five-inch and 320-pound offensive mauler released his top-3 school, Ohio State, Alabama and Notre Dame. Just a few months ago Siereveld dropped a top-6, with Iowa, Cincinnati and Michigan not making the final cut. His final three schools are clearly some of the best football teams in the nation.
It remains to be seen what Siereveld’s next move is, if he’s going to take official visits or when he will commit. What we do know is that the Irish are still in the mix for the lineman’s services.

Notre Dame never can have enough players at skill positions. That’s because you never know when you might find the next player to electrify crowds at Notre Dame Stadium. That surely is the reason the Irish staff is thrilled to see the below tweet from Tony Phillips Jr., a running back recruit from Bishop McNamara in Kankakee, Illinois:
Unless there’s something we don’t know about, Saturday stands to be a busy a day for Phillips because he already has tweeted about going to Illinois on the same day. He hasn’t tweeted about visiting the Illini since:
In March, Phillips also visited Purdue and Iowa, so it’s obvious that a lot of Big Ten programs are looking heavily at him. In January, he received offers from Massachusetts and Miami (Ohio). Those were on top of the offers he already had received from Syracuse, Tennessee and Florida Atlantic.
This kid will play somewhere with a fine reputation in college, and let’s hope it’s Notre Dame.
