Notre Dame misses out on 2023 Illinois wide receiver who elects to stay home

The Irish hat was left on the table

The Irish had their hat on the table for Illinois wide receiver [autotag]Malik Elzy[/autotag] at the [autotag]All-American Bowl[/autotag] but it really didn’t seem like [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] was a contender. Having know Elzy since his freshman year, I knew he was going to be a big-time threat.

At one point, Elzy was committed to [autotag]Cincinatti[/autotag], but when [autotag]Luke Fickell[/autotag] left to take the [autotag]Wisconsin[/autotag] job, the six-foot-two-inch and 205-pound receiver opened things up again. During the All-American game, Elzy made his decision, selecting Illinois and staying close to home.

This really doesn’t hurt the Irish, as they signed [autotag]Braylon James[/autotag], [autotag]Jaden Greathouse[/autotag], [autotag]Rico Flores[/autotag], and [autotag]Kaleb Smith[/autotag]. [autotag]Brandyn Hillman[/autotag] could end up playing the position as well.

Notre Dame in final three for star Ohio offensive lineman

The Irish are still in it

It has been no secret that the Midwest’s best state for high school talent is Ohio. It is a state has has a large amount of players, some of which can play anywhere in the country. Lakota East 2023 offensive lineman Austin Siereveld is one of those players.

Earlier this evening the massive six-foot-five-inch and 320-pound offensive mauler released his top-3 school, Ohio State, Alabama and Notre Dame. Just a few months ago Siereveld dropped a top-6, with Iowa, Cincinnati and Michigan not making the final cut. His final three schools are clearly some of the best football teams in the nation.

It remains to be seen what Siereveld’s next move is, if he’s going to take official visits or when he will commit. What we do know is that the Irish are still in the mix for the lineman’s services.

Illinois ‘23 wide receiver connecting well with new Notre Dame staff

Would be great to see this Illinois prospect in Blue and Gold

Although I am no longer a scout, I still have seen many of the current group of Illinois high school athletes in action over the last few years, one of them being Simeon wide receiver Malik Elzy. When I first saw him up close, I knew that his recruitment would lead him to a Power-5 program.

According to a report from 247Sports Allen Trieu, that’s exactly the case. Elzy recently told Trieu that he’s in constant contact with multiple schools including Illinois, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Cincinnati and Notre Dame.

When asked what Elzy though about the Irish, he responded by saying “I talk to the new wide receivers coach, Coach Stuckey, Dre Brown, the head coach, the quarterbacks coach Rees, we really built that connection. They really love me and I love them too.”

Recruiting is all about making connections with players and if the Irish are making that close connection with Elzy, there is a chance he ends up a bit east of his current residence.
