Notre Dame vs. Iowa State: Three things to know

1. Notre Dame enters on a five-game winning streak, and it went 4-0 against the spread over the last four games. The Irish were 8-4 ATS on the season. Meanwhile, the Cyclones are limping into this one after going 2-3 in the last five games and 0-3 ATS in the last three – they are 5-6-1 ATS on the season.

2. The Irish, behind QB Ian Book, rank 13th in the nation in scoring at 37.1 points per game. Meanwhile, Cyclones sophomore QB Brock Purdy is fourth in the country in passing yards (3,760), while the offense ranks 26th in scoring (34.1 PPG).

3. The Irish are 3-2 in their last five bowl games but were crushed 30-3 last season in a College Football Playoff semifinal at the Cotton Bowl by the eventual champion Clemson Tigers. The Cyclones are 2-3 in their last five bowl appearances, most recently falling to the Washington Huskies 28-26 in the 2018 Alamo Bowl – Iowa State scored with 4:02 left but came up short when a potential game-tying, 2-point conversation failed.

Prediction

Notre Dame 30, Iowa State 21

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. Notre Dame is -161. Every $1.61 wagered on the Irish to win outright would profit $1 if they do so. Betting on Iowa State (+135) would profit 1.35-to-1 if the Cyclones win outright. I’m going to PASS and focus on the Irish spread.

Against the Spread (ATS)

NOTRE DAME (-3.5, -106) is the STRONGEST PLAY. The Irish are just a better team, including having an edge when it comes to talent among the second-stringers (backups).

Over/Under (O/U)

A slight lean to the UNDER 53.5 (-106). Notre Dame’s defense – led by senior DL Khalid Kareem and Adetokunbo Ogundeji – ranks 14th in points allowed at 18.7 PPG. The Cyclones defense is 52nd in points allowed (25.3). Notre Dame is 5-7 on the O/U line this season, while Iowa State is 5-6-1.

Camping World Bowl Sold Out

Congratulations to the Notre Dame athletic department as it has now sold out more consecutive bowl games than it has home football games.

We mentioned earlier this month when Iowa State was announced as Notre Dame’s opponent in the Camping World Bowl that one of the reasons they were chosen over other 6-3 in conference Big XII teams that beat them head-to-head was because their fan base will travel with the best of them.

Only a few days after tickets went on sale it was announced by Iowa State’s athletic director that Cyclones fans had bought all of their allotted tickets for the game.

Well, now all the tickets to Saturday’s game are spoken for.

At least on the initial market.

So there you go, for the first time since Notre Dame played Florida State in the then-Champs Sports Bowl and for now just the second time ever, the Camping World Bowl has sold out.

Congrats to the bowl for picking Iowa State and rewarding a fan-base that travels to support it’s squad.

Also congratulations to the Notre Dame athletic department as it has now sold out more consecutive bowl games than it has home football games.

PFF – Rankings Ian Book vs. Other Bowl Game Quarterbacks

Pro Football Focus recently rated every starting quarterback for every team playing in a bowl game this year on how they project as future NFL signal-callers.

Unfortunately for Ian Book, that didn’t come with a very kind evaluation.

Pro Football Focus does a good job of evaluating what college players project to at the next level.  There is good and bad that come of that.

Good in that you get an honest, unbiased evaluation about how a player has performed at the collegiate level and how that play effects how they project at the next level.

The bad in that is that sometimes the truth can hurt.

Pro Football Focus recently rated every starting quarterback for every team playing in a bowl game this year on how they project as future NFL signal-callers.

Unfortunately for Ian Book, that didn’t come with a very kind evaluation.

Ian Book checked in at No. 35 on the list and here’s the write-up from PFF on Book at the next level:

Book has a limited arm and serious pocket-presence issues. We charged him with 11 sacks and 38 pressures on his own this year after charging him with 18 sacks in 2018. Combine that with a limited arm and you have a long shot in the pros

-Pro Football Focus

It’s important to remember that these evaluations are done with the pro game in mind.

Book does so much with his feet that he can still be a difference-maker at the collegiate level in many cases.  However against the stiffer competition, such as Clemson, Georgia and Michigan, the ability to scatter ahead and keep drives moving consistently so much by his feet is extremely difficult to do.

I agree in that Ian Book doesn’t project as a professional quarterback because of what is sighted there and what we’ve discussed on here time and time again.

For what its worth, Brock Purdy of Iowa State checked in eighth in the rankings.

Notre Dame Football: Iowa State Sells Out Camping World Bowl Allotment

If they traveled to San Antonio by the masses to see their Cyclones play Washington State you could bet your rear end they were going to travel to Orlando to see them take on Notre Dame.

We told you on Sunday that part of the reason Iowa State was so appealing to the Camping World Bowl was because they’ve got a passionate fan-base that makes up for a less-than-stellar team history.

We mentioned how Iowa State fans helped pack the Alamo Bowl last year and the Liberty Bowl previous to that.

You can go ahead and add the Camping World Bowl to that list.

It’s hardly surprising. If they traveled to San Antonio by the masses to see their Cyclones play Washington State you could bet your rear end they were going to travel to Orlando to see them take on Notre Dame.

In case you’re curious there are tickets available on the Notre Dame Athletic website at the time of this posting, listed between $79 and $190.

Listen: Camping World Bowl Preview CFN Podcast

I bring up why the game scares me as a Notre Dame fan while Pete gives reason to why the Irish should roll.

As some of you are aware I do a weekly college football podcast with Pete Fiutak of College Football News.

Throughout the year we preview the biggest games, try to project the College Football Playoff and discuss the biggest stories of the week.

We are currently going through and previewing as many bowl games as possible.  Some of the smaller ones get piled into previews for the entire day while other games get their entire own 10 minute or so preview.

We decided that although it’s “just the Camping World Bowl” that’d we’d talk a little about the match-up between 10-2 Notre Dame and 7-5 Iowa State.

I bring up why the game scares me as a Notre Dame fan while Pete gives reason to why the Irish should roll.

We also discuss the change at offensive coordinator as Pete talks me down from being a bit upset over what seems to be an incredibly unthorough search for a replacement.

Penn State and Memphis doing battle in the Cotton Bowl will kickoff at the same time on ESPN.

Finally the College Football Playoff will begin following the Cotton Bowl with both games airing on ESPN.

LSU and Oklahoma doing battle in the Peach Bowl and Ohio State takes on Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl.  It has not yet been announced which of those two games will air first and which will be shown in primetime, but I’d be willing to bet the Fiesta gets the nod.

If you’ve been following Fighting Irish Wire you’ve seen us today go over the final projections by the experts as to who goes where and ultimately who will Notre Dame play in the Camping World Bowl?

It appears we have our answer.

Longtime college football reporter Brett McMurphy of Stadium says that it’ll be Iowa State who joins the Irish in Orlando.

Iowa State finished the regular season 7-5 and just 2-3 away from Ames.

They finished in a four-way tie with Texas, Oklahoma State and Kansas State for third place in the Big XII.

The Camping World Bowl will be played at noon ET on December 28 and will air nationally on ABC.

Notre Dame Football – Final Bowl Projections

At this point you’re aware Notre Dame will be headed to the Camping World Bowl to take on a Big XII opponent on December 28.
What we don’t know is who they’ll be playing when they get there.

At this point you’re aware Notre Dame will be headed to the Camping World Bowl to take on a Big XII opponent on December 28.

What we don’t know is who they’ll be playing when they get there. Although we will know by the early afternoon Sunday, here’s the experts final projections as to who the opponent will be:

247Sports – Brad Crawford: Texas

The Athletic – Stewart Mandel: Kansas State

Bleacher Report – Kerry Miller: Kansas State

College Football News – Pete Fiutak: Texas

ESPN – Bonagura and Schlabach both: Texas

Stadium – Brett McMurphy: Iowa State

Final Tally:

Texas 4

Kansas State 2

Iowa State 1

Oklahoma State 0

We’ll find out officially in a few hours. FWIW I’ve had it being Texas for a couple weeks now.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Notre Dame Football: Ranking Potential Bowl Game Opponents

Finally the biggest draw in the Big XII comes up on our breakdown.  Is Texas back?

In one of the worst kept secrets in college football at this point, we sit and wait to act surprised when on Sunday we will all officially find out that No. 15 Notre Dame will be headed to play a Big XII opponent in the 2019 Camping World Bowl.

That means a trip to Orlando but who the Irish play in the game is still very much up in the air for multiple different reasons.

For one – Oklahoma and Baylor both right now sit at six and seven in the College Football Playoff rankings respectively, with both still being very much alive for a potential New Year’s Six Bowl game berth if they are to fall in Saturday’s conference championship.

That’s important because it would change the Alamo automatically getting whoever loses and instead, give the bowl the chance to pick which of the 5-4 Big XII teams it would like, as Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Texas all finished in a tie for third place after all going 5-4 in conference play.

It got me wondering though – who should Notre Dame fans be rooting for to play?

I get that some Irish fans will have a family or friend that is connected to one of the schools that will make that their obvious choice, but for everyone who doesn’t, what are you rooting for to happen?

A quick look at the potential match-ups, one at a time.
