Notre Dame: Five Things to Know About Iowa State

You may look from a far and wonder how in the world a 7-5 Iowa State was chosen to get to Orlando over 8-4 squads they lost to. You might not think of a traditional football powerhouse when you hear Iowa State but they’ve got a following that would lead you to believe otherwise.

When I say “Iowa State football” what immediately comes to mind for you?

For me it’s Seneca Wallace’s insane scramble in the earlier part of this century.

For others it may be an upset of Oklahoma State in 2011 that kept the Cowboys from a potential BCS Championship berth.

If it’s not one of those I’m not exactly sure what it may be.

The Cyclones are a program very much on the rise and as long as Campbell’s around, i expect there to be growth in terms of talent and wins.

But there aren’t many there yet.

A win would be just their fifth bowl victory in school history, having been to 14 previously.

The Cyclones have only finished in the AP Poll Top 25 twice ever and not since 2000.

A win over No. 14 Notre Dame would get them that and eyes on their program that simply haven’t been there yet.

We’ll touch on this more in the days and weeks to come but it should be fun to see a game against an up-and-coming squad who could enter 2020 as Oklahoma’s biggest perceived threat in the Big XII.
