Three stats that defined Iowa’s 77-62 win over Wisconsin

The stats that sum up Wisconsin’s loss

After jumping ahead 14-3 through just five minutes of action, Iowa never let the lead slip en route to a 77-62 win.

Wisconsin (15-8, 9-7) couldn’t get the stops needed to complete a furious second half comeback as the Hawkeye three-point shooting and Luka Garza at his best ended up being the difference.

There were some wild statistical anomalies as Iowa (16-6, 10-5) shot the lights out from distance and Wisconsin struggled to finish around the rim while winning the battle on the glass.

Here are the three stats that led to Iowa’s third win in as many Big Ten games:

Five takeaways from Wisconsin’s 77-62 loss to Iowa

Takeaways from Wisconsin’s loss to Iowa

Playing from behind for nearly 40 minutes proved to be too tall of a task for Wisconsin against one of college basketball’s most potent offense in Iowa.

After a 14-3 Iowa lead was built through the first five minutes at the Kohl Center, the Badgers never could fully climb the mountain. The No. 11 Hawkeyes shot their way out of a second half Wisconsin push to finish strong for a 77-62 win.

Micah Potter led the way offensively for the No. 21 Badgers while playing a season-high 30 minutes. The senior ended the night with 23 points and 11 rebounds, but Iowa’s National Player of the Year candidate Luka Garza delivered as the promised main event. The senior put up a 30-piece on the Badgers and was lethal from beyond the arc.

Here are five takeaway’s from Wisconsin’s loss to Iowa:

On Thursday night, the No. 21 Wisconsin Badgers will face off against the No. 11 Iowa Hawkeyes at the Kohl Center in a battle for fourth place in the Big Ten. Both teams have underperformed in the last month, and a win will be crucial for both sides for seeding in the Big Ten Tournament that is now less than a month away.

Although Wisconsin had a promising first half against the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines, the Badgers’ implosion in the second half is very concerning ahead of another Top-15 opponent. D’Mitrik Trice was the leading scorer for the Badgers against the Wolverines and will hopefully continue to move out of his recent shooting slump against the Hawkeyes. His scoring will be needed against Luka Garza and the high-powered Iowa offense.

Iowa was considered to be one of the best teams in college basketball entering this season, but have struggled recently much like Wisconsin. The Badgers will need to be efficient on both ends of the court to keep pace against the Hawkeyes and take over fourth place in the Big Ten.

Although the Wisconsin Badgers were not able to pull off the upset on Sunday against the Michigan Wolverines, the close effort, and win against the Nebraska Cornhusker earlier in the week, were enough to keep the Badgers put at No. 21 in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Wisconsin dominated the second half against Nebraska, and they were able to use that momentum in the first half against the Wolverines to jump out to a 14-point lead at halftime. Unfortunately, No. 3 Michigan was able to shake off the rust from their 23-day hiatus in the second half, beating the Badgers 67-59. The Badgers showed a lot of promise, despite losing the game, against a very talented Michigan team and will try to carry over the positives to their matchup against No. 14 Iowa on Thursday night.

Even though Wisconsin has not moved, there have been several changes for the Big Ten in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll. Ohio State and Illinois each moved up one spot to No. 4 and No. 6, while Iowa has jumped up two spots to No. 14. Michigan has remained at No. 3 after defeating the Badgers, while Purdue fell out of the poll after losing to Minnesota.

The top 10 for this week includes Gonzaga(1), Baylor(2), Michigan(3), Ohio State(4), Illinois(5), Houston(5), Villanova(7), Virginia(8), Alabama(9) and Oklahoma(10).

Wisconsin will face off against the No. 14 Iowa Hawkeyes at the Kohl Center, on Thursday at 6 p.m. CST.

After finishing their road trip with a 61-48 win against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the No. 21 Wisconsin Badgers will face off against the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines at the Kohl Center on Sunday afternoon. An upset of the Wolverines could set the Badgers up well for their next matchup against No. 15 Iowa on Thursday night.

The Badgers were able to regain their confidence from a dominant second half against the Cornhuskers, along with another excellent performance from true freshman Jonathan Davis off of the bench. He finished with 10 points, three rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. His contribution off the bench will be crucial for Wisconsin to beat Michigan that has proven to be one the best teams in the country.

Although the Badgers were able to lock down in the second half against Nebraska, they will need to improve their abysmal 32.3% shooting from the field to prevent a similar result to their first matchup where Michigan dominated Wisconsin 77-54. This game is an exciting opportunity for the Badgers to flip the script in the Big Ten ahead of their final stretch of the regular season.

After another week of split results against Penn State and Illinois, the Wisconsin Badgers continued to fall to No. 21 in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Although the Badgers looked dominant in their game against the Penn State Nittany Lions, Wisconsin could not find any answers for the scoring of Kofi Cockburn and Ayo Dosumnu against the Fighting Illini losing by 15 points. It will be important for Wisconsin to play well on Thursday against Nebraska, before playing No. 3 Michigan at the Kohl Center on Feb. 14.

The Big Ten stated its dominance in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll with three teams included in the top 10. Michigan, Ohio State and Illinois have all moved up this week to No. 3, No. 5 and No. 10, while Iowa has continued their plummet from the top 10 to No. 16. Purdue also makes an appearance in the latest poll at No. 25, because of their upset victory against Minnesota last week.

The top 10 for this week includes Gonzaga (1), Baylor (2), Michigan (3), Villanova (4), Ohio State (5), Illinois (6), Houston (7), Texas Tech (8), Virginia (9) and Missouri (10).

Wisconsin will face the Nebraska Cornhuskers(4-9) next in Lincoln, Neb. on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. CST.

Ohio State basketball vs. Iowa: How and where to watch and listen to the game Thursday

All the information you need to see or hear Ohio State basketball as they travel to Iowa for a top-ten matchup.

It’s no secret the Big Ten Conference is really good. And tonight, we get a top ten matchup when No. 7 Ohio State travels to Iowa City to face the No. 8 Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Buckeyes haven’t played since knocking off Michigan State by a margin of 17 points on Sunday. Iowa then played Sparty two days later beating MSU by 6.

It will be interesting to see how OSU handles the size of the Hawkeyes. Luka Garza is a beast at 6 feet, 11 inches, can play inside and out, averages 26.5 points per game, and shoots over 45 percent from beyond the arc. Iowa also has another almost seven-footer in Jack Nunge. It could be a matchup problem for the Buckeyes who top out at 6 feet, 8 inches.

Tonight’s game has huge implications in the Big Ten standings as well. Ohio State and Iowa are both currently tied for third place finding themselves just a game and a half behind conference leader, Michigan.

After an inconsistent week that ended in a blow out a victory against Northwestern and a disappointing loss to No. 15 Ohio State, the Wisconsin Badgers have fallen three spots to No. 13 in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Although the Badgers looked phenomenal against a struggling Northwestern team last week, their extremely poor shooting and interior defense against the Buckeyes cost them the game. The loss to Ohio State also cost Wisconsin an opportunity to move into second place in the Big Ten.

It had been another turbulent week in the Big Ten with several teams moving significantly in the rankings. Michigan and Ohio State both jumped three spots after solid weeks to No. 4 and No. 15, while Illinois moved up two spots to No. 22 after their convincing victory against Penn State. In addition to the Badgers, Iowa and Minnesota also fell three spots to No. 7 and No. 20.

After two consecutive weeks of playing highly ranked opponents, the Badgers’ schedule will be a bit calmer this week playing unranked Maryland and Penn State.

The top 10 includes Gonzaga (1), Baylor (2), Villanova (3), Michigan (4), Texas (5), Houston (6), Iowa (7), Virginia (8), Alabama (8) and Texas Tech (10).

Wisconsin will be on the road in their next game against the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. CST.

In a highly anticipated AP Top-25 matchup, the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers will face the No. 15 Ohio State Buckeyes at the Kohl Center on Saturday night. A win against the Buckeyes could move the Badgers above the Iowa Hawkeyes into second place in the Big Ten.

After a standout game in his fifth career start, Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl will look to keep the momentum going against a talented Ohio State team. Although Wahl hasn’t had the most eye-popping numbers this season, his work on defense and clutch baskets have been crucial to the Badgers down the stretch.

Wahl will likely matchup against Ohio State forward E.J. Liddell, who leads the Buckeyes in rebounds, steals and blocks. Liddell is also second in scoring with 14.1 points per game.

After Iowa’s upset loss to the Indiana Hoosiers on Thursday night, an opportunity has opened for the Badgers to take sole possession of second place in the Big Ten with a win against the Buckeyes.

Iowa becomes the focal point of 5-way Big Ten race for double byes

Iowa is a team to watch

Fran McCaffery is the coach fans of other Big Ten schools love to hate. He has the hot temper, the pugnacious attitude, the nasty streak. Yet, while the Iowa coach is a lightning rod and an object of gleeful derision when the Hawkeyes lose, it remains that Fran might help another Big Ten team (in addition to his own) secure a double bye at the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.

You don’t WANT to send a gift basket to Fran McCaffery, but if you get a double bye in the Big Ten Tournament courtesy of an Iowa win, you might have to… and this is the position Wisconsin inhabits heading into the final two weeks of the 2020 Big Ten regular season.

When you look at the remaining schedules for the five Big Ten teams which are tied at 10-6 in the conference standings, two details stand out: One is that Northwestern plays three of the five teams — Wisconsin, Illinois, and Penn State — while Michigan State and Iowa don’t get another shot at the Wildcats.

The other detail is that Iowa is the only team of the five which plays three of the other four Big Ten teams in this five-way logjam.

Wisconsin plays none of the other four teams, which is why the Badgers have such a good shot at a double bye (though by no means a guarantee).

Illinois plays only one of the other four teams in the five-way tie.

Penn State plays two.

Michigan State plays two.

Iowa plays three: Michigan State, Penn State, and Illinois, missing only Wisconsin.

Penn State and Michigan State play each other in the coming weeks. Since Iowa plays PSU and MSU, what we have, essentially, is a three-team round-robin involving Iowa, Penn State, and Michigan State. Wisconsin (like Illinois) is hoping that Iowa goes 1-1 in its two games against Penn State and Michigan State, and that all three teams — UI, PSU, and MSU — split their games in that three-team group.

Iowa, though, is the true epicenter of the Big Ten’s race for double byes at the conference tournament. No one wants Fran McCaffery to do TOO well, but no one in the upper tier of the Big Ten wants him to be a complete failure down the stretch, either.
