Bills to stay put as NFL names home teams for 2024 international games

No Europe #Bills in 2024:

The NFL designated four home teams out of the five international games taking place in the 2024 NFL season.

The league will play three games in England, one game in Germany, and one game in Brazil next year.

The Buffalo Bills’ full list of opponents in 2024 was finalized following the end of this year’s regular season. Buffalo was considered the “home” team when they played the Jacksonville Jaguars in October in London. Bills players did not enjoy that game with multiple injuries and jet lag decimating Buffalo’s chance to win against the Jaguars in their international home game at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium.

The only home team not announced is the game in Brazil.  There is still a chance the Bills might have to play internationally – but definitely not in Europe where it is considered overseas and multiple time zones away.

For those curious, here is the full list of home teams playing in the European international games.

Colts to play Patriots in Germany for Week 10 matchup

The Colts are heading overseas in Week 10!

The 2023 schedule will be released Thursday night, but we now know that the Indianapolis Colts will be facing off against the New England Patriots in Germany.

For the first time since they traveled to London in 2016, the Colts will be playing in an international game. This one will take place in Week 10 at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on Nov. 12 at 9:30 a.m. ET. The game will air on NFL Network.

The Colts and Patriots will be the final international game of the season. The Houston Texans are the only AFC South team to not have a game overseas, while the Jacksonville Jaguars are scheduled to have two games overseas in back-to-back weeks (Weeks 4 and 5).

Broncos continue steps toward an eventual game in Mexico

Terrell Davis, Jake Plummer set to represent Broncos in CDMX and Monterrey from April 29-30 when Denver announces a draft pick in Mexico.

The Denver Broncos will play an international game in Mexico. Not this season. Maybe not next season, but within the next seven years.

The NFL requires every team to play at least one international game every eight years. The Broncos just played in England last season, so their next international game might not be imminent, but it will be scheduled before 2030.

So, why Mexico?

The NFL announced in 2021 that Mexico has been designated as Denver’s “International Home Market Area.” As part of that announcement, the NFL said “the league will use its best efforts to ensure clubs play their international games in their international HMAs, where possible.”

The Broncos have said numerous times that they would like to play in Mexico, and the team has taken steps to grow their already sizeable following south of the border.

Denver donated 100 flag football kits to public and private schools in Mexico last fall. Last March, the team sent former senior V.P. of strategy Brittany Bowlen, Hall of Famer Steve Atwater and then-Bronco player Bradley Chubb on a multi-day tour in Mexico to promote the club’s IHMA affiliation.

“Outside of the Denver Metro area, the largest population of Broncos fans resides in Mexico City,” the Broncos said in a press release last spring.

Last week, the team announced they will have another event in Mexico this spring around the 2023 NFL draft. Denver will have Hall of Famer Terrell Davis and ex-quarterback Jake Plummer represent the team in Mexico from April 29-30.

Speaking with media at the NFL owners’ meetings in Arizona last month, Broncos president Damani Leech said the team will announce one of their draft picks in Mexico (presumably Plummer and/or Davis will make the announcement).

This all points toward the team continuing to grow its brand in Mexico ahead of an eventual international game played in Mexico City. The NFL will not play any games in Mexico this season because Estadio Azteca is undergoing renovations.

Once those renovations are complete, the NFL will return to Mexico — and the Broncos will be part of the league’s international schedule at some point within the next seven years.

Panthers have 2 chances to play internationally in 2023

The Panthers won’t be hosting an international game in 2023. But they do have two chances at flying overseas for one. Here’s how and where that could happen:

Sorry, Carolina Panthers—but you still don’t have to brush up on your German just yet. But your English may suffice.

On Thursday, the NFL announced the five teams that’ve been designated for their international games series in 2023. And, no, the Panthers aren’t one of them—at least not yet.

The teams that’ll be headed overseas to serve as hosts are the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans—who are all going to London—as well as the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots—who’ll be off to Germany.

This’ll mark the second year in a row where the Panthers will not host a game in Germany after they were one of four teams to be granted the country’s international marketing rights. They could, though, end up being the away team for a matchup with the Jaguars or Titans—two of their confirmed 2023 opponents.

Jacksonville, for the ninth time in franchise history, will be setting up shop at Wembley Stadium for a week—while Tennessee will suit up at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

We, additionally, cannot confirm if Prince Harry will be in attendance.

Raiders road opponents to play in London and Germany in 2023

Could Raiders play in London or Germany this season? They sure could.

It’s been a few years now since the Raiders last played an international game. The last time was 2019 when they were still in Oakland.

Back then the Raiders would regularly play one of their home games either in London or Mexico; something that has not happened since moving into Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

It may be a couple years at least before the Raiders are again asked to host a playoff game overseas. But they are very much in play as a visiting team.

Today the NFL announced five teams that will be the host squad overseas.

Buffalo Bills — London (Tottenham Hotspur)
Tennessee Titans — London (Tottenham Hotspur)
Jacksonville Jaguars — London (Wembley)
Kansas City Chiefs — Germany (TBD)
New England Patriots — Germany (TBD)

The opponents for these teams has not yet been announced.

The Raiders will face both the Bills and Chiefs on the road this season, which means it’s possible the Raiders could be headed to either London or Germany this season.

If it was the Bills, it would be a return trip to Tottenham Hotspur as the Raiders played in the first ever NFL game at the stadium in 2019.

As unwise as it would seem to take a Raiders game away from Arrowhead, if the league decided to do it, it could be the second ever NFL game played in Germany after the Seahawks faced the Patriots in Munich last season.

The Lions could play in Germany in 2023

The Lions could play in Germany in 2023 as part of the NFL’s international outreach series

The NFL released the five teams that will “host” international games and where each of those teams will play. It opens the door for the Detroit Lions to perhaps have a game in Germany in 2023.

This year’s international schedule will have five AFC teams set to give up a home date to play across the Atlantic Ocean. The Bills, Jaguars, Patriots, Chiefs and Titans are those teams.

Detroit only has one road date slated against any of those teams: the Chiefs. It was also revealed that the Chiefs and the Patriots will host their overseas games in Germany.

The Lions were slated to play the Jaguars in London in 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic wiped out the international slate that season.

The dates and times of all the Lions games for 2023 will be announced later in the spring.

NFL releases London matchups and Raiders not among them

It’s official: No international games for Raiders this season

The NFL likes to release their schedule in bits and pieces these days, just to keep fans interested. Back in late February, they revealed which teams would be the home teams for their five international games — three in London, one in Mexico, and one in Germany.

With that reveal, we knew the Raiders would not be playing in Mexico or Germany because they didn’t have a road game against the Cardinals or Buccaneers. But London was still a possibility.

In fact, there are two of the Raiders’ road opponents who play host in London — the Saints at Tottenham Hotspur and the Jaguars at Wembley.

Well, today the NFL announced who the Saints and Jaguars would be facing in those games, and it isn’t the Raiders.

The Saints will face off against the Vikings, while the Jaguars will face the Broncos.

And therefore, the Raiders officially have no international games this season.

Prior to the team’s move from Oakland to Las Vegas, they had five international games in a six-year span — three in London and two in Mexico City. In every case, they were the “home” team.

While being in a new stadium, and having sent so many home games out of the country in recent years, may preclude them from hosting an international game anytime soon, it doesn’t take them off the table to be the visiting team.

And we are entering the third straight season without the Raiders playing an international game, so at some point, they will be due again.

Colts won’t make international trip in 2022

The Colts won’t be making an international trip in 2022.

The NFL released the schedule of international games for the 2022 and the Indianapolis Colts won’t be among the teams playing in another country.

The Colts haven’t played in an international contest since they went to London in 2016, losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars are Wembley Stadium, 30-27.

The Colts had a slim chance to play international anyway. The league announced the home teams for the games earlier in the offseason and the only away game on the schedule that matched was the Jaguars game.

However, the league announced the five games that will be played internationally in 2022.

  • Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium | London, U.K. | 9:30 a.m. ET on Oct. 2
  • New York Giants at Green Bay Packers: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium | London, U.K. | 9:30 a.m. ET on Oct. 9
  • Denver Broncos at Jacksonville Jaguars:  Wembley Stadium | London, U.K. | 9:30 a.m. ET on Oct. 30
  • Seattle Seahawks at Tampa Bay Buccaneers:  Allianz Arena — home of FC Bayern Munich | Munich, Germany | 9:30 a.m. ET on Nov. 13
  • San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals: Estadio Azteca | Mexico City, Mexico | 8:15 p.m. ET on Nov. 21

The Colts are expected to have their schedule released next week, but we at least know they’ll be playing in the United States for the entire season.

Colts have slight chance to play international game in 2022

The Colts have a chance to play an international game in 2022, but those chances are slim.

The NFL announced five teams that will be “hosting” an international game during the 2022 regular season, and there’s now one chance for the Indianapolis Colts to be a part of that venture.

The five teams that will be playing international games include the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In London, the Packers and Saints will be the home teams for the games at Tottenheim Hotspur Stadium while the Jaguars will be the home team for a game at Wembley Stadium.

The Cardinals will be the home team for a game in Mexico City at Estadio Azteca while the Bucs will be the home team for a game in Germany at FC Bayern Munich Stadium.

Considering the only team of those five above on the Colts’ 2022 schedule are the Jaguars, their only chance of playing in an international game would be against their division foes.

The last time the Colts played an international game was in 2016 against the Jaguars in London. The Jaguars won 30-27.

So while there is a slight chance we see the Colts head overseas in 2022, their only chance would be a divisional game in London.
