Ike Boettger makes first appearance at Bills practice in 2022

Ike Boettger makes first appearance at #Bills practice in 2022:

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Ike Boettger made his season debut… at practice.

But Boettger is still a long ways away from playing in a game. He certainly will not be in the lineup against the Vikings since he’s still on the PUP list.

In Week 16 last season, Beottger suffered an Achilles injury. It ended his year and he had surgery to repair it.

But… progress. Boettger told the Batavia Daily that just showing up to practice was a “huge milestone” for him.

That it certainly is, and maybe there’s still hope for him.

While he’s not yet fully taking part in football workouts, Bills general manger Brandon Beane did hold out hope Boettger could return before the end of the season.

Time will tell, but for now, have a look at the Spectrum News clip below to see Beottger’s return to workouts:

Buffalo Bills place OL Ike Boettger on Reserve/PUP list

#Bills place OL Ike Boettger on Reserve/PUP list:

The Buffalo Bills have placed offensive lineman Ike Boettger on the team’s Reserve/PUP list according to general manager Brandon Beane.

On Tuesday, the window for placing players on the designation opened.

Boettger, 27, was originally injured last season. He made 10 starts on Buffalo’s offensive line in 2021, including nine straight, before he suffered that Achilles injury.

Upon Boettger leaving the lineup, the Bills called upon Ryan Bates to replace him. Bates performed well and held onto starting duties even when former Bill Jon Feliciano returned to the lineup.

Bates’ efforts earned him an offer sheet from the Chicago Bears this offseason which was matched by the Bills. Bates will be back in Buffalo under that four-year deal.

However, Bates was not the lone Bills offensive lineman re-signed this spring. Despite his injury, Boettger also was re-signed via a one-year deal.

Boettger landing on the PUP list is not surprising. He has spent the entire offseason away from the practice field.

Landing on the PUP list means Boettger must sit out at least four games. He can return any time after that.

The Bills designating Boettger to the PUP list also reveals the team did not see fit for cornerback Tre’Davious White to land there. He remains on the team’s active roster.

Boettger coming off the roster brings Buffalo down to the mandated total of 80 players required by the NFL ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

Tre’Davious White, two others start Bills training camp on PUP list

Tre’Davious White, two others start #Bills training camp on PUP list:

The Buffalo Bills placed three players on the physically unable to preform list (PUP) at the start of the team’s training camp on Sunday.

Of those, two are unsurprising.

The trio placed on that designation by the team are:

  • CB Tre’Davious White
  • OL Ike Boettger
  • DT Eli Ankou

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott announced the transactions via video conference. White and Boettger being mentioned are the two that were expected.

White is still returning from an ACL injury he suffered last season. McDermott, as he did all offseason, only said White is “on schedule” to return from his rehab.

According to various reports from the first day of camp practice, White was in attendance on the sideline watching the session.

Like the defender, Bottger suffered a long-term injury during the 2021 season. He tore his Achilles.

Last year, Boettger started in 10 games for the Bills. Included in that was nine-straight outings before injury struck. Ryan Bates went on to fill in for Boettger and the Bills liked Bates’ efforts as they re-signed him during free agency.

McDermott did not elaborate on Ankou, who had previously taken part in the team’s spring practice earlier this offseason. He is a rotational piece along Buffalo’s defensive front.

Full list of Bills players not participating in OTAs

Full list of #Bills players not participating in OTAs:

The Buffalo Bills hit the field again for another slate of organized team activates (OTAs). While observers of the team will appreciate full attendance, that’s usually not the case.

Some players decide not to show up… and it’s important to note that doing so is OK. All such workouts prior to mandatory minicamp are voluntary. No penalty for missing them.

The reasonings for being elsewhere usually vary. Sometimes it’s health or contract related, others players are excused to do whatever else they desire.

But for those curious, here’s a rundown of players that were not attending OTA practice on Tuesday, according to The Athletic:

Buffalo Bills re-sign OL Ike Boettger to one-year deal

#Bills re-sign OL Ike Boettger to one-year deal:

The Buffalo Bills brought back two pieces along their offensive line on Monday, the team announced.

The Bills have re-signed lineman Ike Boettger to a one-year deal. Full terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Boettger’s return came around the same time that the team announced Ryan Bates would also be back via a four-year deal. The Bills matched an offer sheet he signed with the Chicago Bears.

Boettger, 27, has spent most of his four-year career with the Bills. He briefly spent time on the Kansas City Chiefs, where he did not appear in a game before returning to Buffalo.

In the last two seasons, Boettger found his way into the Bills’ starting lineup 17 times.

In 2021, Boettger made 10 starts before a December Achilles injury ended his season. Leading up to that game, Boettger made nine-straight starts over Jon Feliciano.

Feliciano started 2021 as the Bills’ starter at guard on the offensive line, however, he left due to injury. After healing, Feliciano did not replace Boettger–nor did he get back in the lineup over Ryan Bates.

Bates replaced Boettger when he went down. Bates went on to start for the Bills during the postseason as well.

Before injury, Boettger was graded a 59.8 overall mark by Pro Football Focus. The football analytics outlet likes Boettger’s pass blocking in particular. That grade of 72.2 was their ninth-best number for any guard in the NFL.

Bates is likely viewed as a starting guard for the Bills on paper this offseason. Buffalo also signed Rodger Saffold who will factor in as well.

Still, the Bills will go with the five they think gives the team the best chance. If Boettger ends up outplaying Bates or Saffold this offseason, he’ll be awarded starting snaps.

Feliciano has since gone on to sign with the New York Giants.

Buffalo Bills’ 7 most important free agents in 2022

The #Bills have some important free agents that need addressing:

The Buffalo Bills have a grand total of 17 pending free agents of different varieties heading into the offseason. The team’s front office led by general manager Brandon Beane must now shift into free agency mode. What do the Bills do with their own?

Buffalo has to decide if, in the end, they let players walk or get them to sign on the dotted line to come back.

Naturally, as things go, some of these players are much bigger pieces of the puzzle than others.

With that, here are the Bills’ seven most important pending free agents in 2022:

Bills’ Ike Boettger has surgery, is in good spirits

#Bills’ Ike Boettger has surgery, is in good spirits:

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Ike Boettger is keeping upbeat despite his 2021 season being over.

In Week 16 against the New England Patriots, Boettger went down with an Achilles injury. His game was quickly deemed to be over.

Later on this week, Boettger was placed on injured reserve as well, ending the rest of his season.

Boettger went on to announce via his social media account on Instagram that he has had surgery. He indicates it’s actually the second time he has had a similar procedure in the past.

Still, he’s remaining in good spirits. He says he’ll miss playing on Sunday and adds he “can’t wait” to get back on the field next fall.

The Buffalo Bills made an expected roster move, placing offensive lineman Ike Boettger on injured reserve.

In the Bills’ Week 16 33-21 win over the New England Patriots (9-6), Boettger suffered an Achilles injury.

The Bills (9-6) quickly announced that Boettger’s day was finished when it occurred. Buffalo went on to place Boettger on IR on Monday.

Boettger had been starting for the Bills in recent weeks as Jon Feliciano has spent time sidelined due to the COVID list and injury.

When Boettger left the lineup, Buffalo’s hand was then forced. Dion Dawkins was activated from the team’s COVID list on Saturday, but he was not in the starting lineup. He only got out there once Boettger went down, but he held his own.

Also prior to kickoff, the Bills had called Bobby Hart up from their practice squad. In a corresponding move with Boettger hitting injured reserve, Hart was signed to Buffalo’s 53-man roster.

Other transactions the Bills announced on Monday:

  • Cornerback Cam Lewis has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
  • Defensive end Breeland Sparks was released from the practice squad.
