The Kansas City Chiefs have already begun making moves to start the roster cutdown day while trimming their depth chart before the start of the regular season. The impressive performance of wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette may not have been enough to make the Chiefs’ depth chart.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Smith-Marsette was traded to the Carolina Panthers along with a swap of conditional 2025 seventh-round draft picks.

Smith-Marsette was among the many talented receivers in training camp, with the Chiefs seeking a spot on the team. He was impressive throughout the preseason, totaling nine receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns in three games.

The Panthers are dealing with multiple injuries at the position, creating interest in making a deal with Kansas City. The Chiefs still have more moves to make as they try to finalize their regular season roster.

What does Tuesday’s acquisition of WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette mean for the Panthers?

What could Tuesday’s acquisition of WR Ihmir-Smith Marsette tell us about the Panthers and their immediate future?

Right before making more waves throughout their roster on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers added to it—acquiring wideout Ihmir Smith-Marsette in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, what could this deal tell us about the team going forward?

Well, for starters, let’s take a quick dive into what the speedy 6-foot-1, 185-pounder can do.

From his standout college career at the University of Iowa to his stellar 2023 preseason for Kansas City, Smith-Marsette has proven to be a home-run hitter—or at least a hunter for extra bases. Yeah, yeah—it’s the wrong sport, but it’s hard not to notice what he can do to a field.

Smith-Marsette reeled in 110 passes for 1,615 yards as a Hawkeye, good enough for a juicy average of 14.7 yards per catch. He’d do some similar stretching this summer, finishing as the NFL’s second-leading receiver in exhibition play with 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns on nine completions.

Here he is taking chunks off the gridiron for the Chiefs over the past few weeks, where he averaged a ridiculous 21.7 yards a grab:

He’s also a proven threat on special teams. During his time in Iowa City, Smith-Marsette—the 2018 Rodgers–Dwight Return Specialist of the Year—fielded a total of 53 kickoffs for 1,520 yards (28.7 yards per return) and two scores.

So, now that the Panthers have added a receiver who can stretch the field on offense and bring some electric value on special teams, what does that mean for the team’s immediate future?

As far as today’s final cuts go, this arrival could mean the departure for a few wideouts who are on the bubble. 2021 sixth-round pick Shi Smith, who has a similar skill set to that of Smith-Marsette, may be the most notable man on notice.

The deal could also signal some uncertainty about the overall health of the room. DJ Chark, the team’s top vertical threat, is currently dealing with a hamstring injury—one that we don’t have much information on at the moment. Terrace Marshall Jr. (back) and Laviska Shenault Jr. (concussion) have been on the mend as well.

We’ll see what the rest of the day brings us, but general manager Scott Fitterer and company have started it with a tiny bang.

The Carolina Panthers will now have one extra player to part ways with today.

Revisiting the Bears’ 2022 roster cutdown waiver claims

The Bears will be all over the waiver wire this week when cuts are made, but how did last year’s moves fare?

In just a matter of hours, the Chicago Bears and the rest of the NFL teams will whittle their rosters down to 53 players as they prepare for the regular season. That will leave hundreds of NFL athletes without a team, and they’ll hit the waiver wire with an opportunity to be picked up by a new one. When they do, the Bears will be waiting as they have first dibs at the top of the waiver order.

Just like they had the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft thanks to having the worst record in the league, the Bears also have the first waiver spot and will keep it until Week 3 of the regular season concludes. Then, waivers will be determined by the current league records, with the worst team getting the first spot.

Last year, the Bears had the seventh spot, but that didn’t stop general manager Ryan Poles from putting in quite a few claims for players. In 2022, the Bears led the league with six waiver claims on the first day (seven in total). Will Poles top that number this year as he looks to strengthen the roster?

Before we dive into possible waiver claims for this year, let’s look back to see how the 2022 waiver claims fared throughout the season.

Chiefs WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette optimistic about future after stellar preseason performances

Kansas City Chiefs achieved a gritty victory over the Cleveland Browns in their preseason finale, and now have to make some tough decisions heading into cut week. One player who helped his case significantly to make the team is wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette, who was among the Chiefs’ most productive players in the preseason.

After stints with the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings, Ihmir Smith-Marsette signed with the Chiefs in 2022, primarily on the practice squad. The young receiver entered training camp knowing he needed to impress to have a chance at making the team. He spoke with reporters following Saturday’s game, reflecting on his journey in the league.

“It’s fantastic,” Smith-Marsette explained. “My first two years were rocky and just getting my feet under me going into my third one and just having that mindset of knowing who I am and what I’m really capable of, then just going out there and putting it out there on display. It’s been a hell of a ride, and it’s just getting started.”

Smith-Marsette led the team with four catches for 101 yards and a touchdown, creating more conversation around his status on the team.

“It means a lot. Like I always say, just keep working, and it’s going to prove itself at the end of the day.” said Smith-Marsette, “Just going out there and doing what I can and make that decision hard at the end of the day, that’s something they told us, and I feel like I made it just a little bit harder.”

WATCH: Chiefs WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette makes long touchdown catch vs. Browns

#Chiefs WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette scored a 43-yard touchdown in Kansas City’s preseason finale against the #Browns on Saturday.

Ihmir Smith-Marsette has looked every bit the part of an NFL receiver during the Kansas City Chiefs preseason games and scored a 43-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter of the team’s matchup against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.

Smith-Marsette’s long grab came after he was targeted on fourth down to extend the Chiefs’ drive downfield and baited a Browns defender into a pass interference call that kept Kansas City’s offense on the field.

Plays like these have made Smith-Marsette a fan-favorite in Kansas City and will certainly help him find work if the Chiefs decide to waive him next week when they cut their roster down to 53 players.

At this point, Smith-Marsette seems like an indispensable part of the team’s offense, but with so many standout receivers on their payroll, Kansas City will have some tough decisions to make as they assess their depth chart ahead of the 2023 regular season kickoff in September.

WATCH: Chiefs WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette comes down with clutch catches vs. Browns

#Chiefs WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette put Kansas City in field goal range on the team’s final drive of the second quarter against the #Browns.

Kansas City Chiefs receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette followed up his exceptional performance against the Arizona Cardinals with an impressive first half against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.

He made his mark on Kansas City’s final offensive drive of the first half, securing two catches that helped put the Chiefs in a position to cut into Cleveland’s lead heading into the halftime break.

His first reception of the drive went for 30 yards and got Kansas City onto the Browns’ side of the field.

The second grab came two plays later and went for 28 yards to get the Chiefs in field goal range just before the two-minute warning.

Smith-Marsette is among Kansas City’s most underrated pass catchers and has shown outstanding proficiency in Andy Reid’s offense through training camp and the preseason. These plays may not count toward his regular season statistics, but Smith-Marsette’s effort won’t go unnoticed by the Chiefs’ coaching staff heading into cut week.
