Two releases put Patriots QB room back to where it started

The QB room in New England is back to where it started.

And just like that, the New England Patriots’ quarterback room is back to where it started.

The team announced they had released backup quarterbacks Ian Book and Matt Corral in their continued go at musical chairs with the position.

Corral initially signed to the main roster after Bailey Zappe’s surprising release from the team. Zappe was then signed back to the practice squad and elevated to the main roster with Corral going on the exempt/left squad list. The Patriots then went out and signed Book as their second practice squad quarterback next to rookie Malik Cunningham.

Now, the position is back to where it was at training camp (minus Trace McSorley). Mac Jones and Zappe are the two quarterback options on the main roster, while Cunningham is the young, developing prospect behind the scenes.

Perhaps the revolving door position has finally been settled for the Patriots.

Notre Dame vs Ohio State: It’s Different This Time

This time it’s different.

For the last 25-30 years Notre Dame Football has been known for one thing more than any other. Losing “the big game”, often in horrifically embarrassing fashion. That hurts to hear if you are an Irish fan, but it’s the truth. Notre Dame is a running meme when it comes to big-game blowouts. And don’t get me started on bowl game records.

Somehow, some way Notre Dame must end this cycle.

Change the narratives.

Force the country to view them in a different light.

There’s only one way to accomplish this. Beat Ohio State. Let’s examine some ways that the 2023 Notre Dame team is uniquely positioned to possibly do just that.

10 potential replacements for Eagles injured slot cornerback Avonte Maddox

We’re looking at 10 potential replacements for Philadelphia #Eagles slot cornerback Avonte Maddox, who’ll be out indefinitely after having surgery on torn pectoral muscle

The Eagles are used to playing without Avonte Maddox over the past two seasons and they’ll go an indefinite amount of time without their slot cornerback in 2023.

Philadelphia is already down a starter at middle linebacker, and the team will lose their slot cornerback after he sustained a pectoral injury.

In Rapoport reports that Maddox will be out indefinitely and could miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery.

Maddox underwent an MRI on Friday, and after receiving a second opinion, he’ll have the surger

With Maddox and McPhearson out, the Eagles to make at the slot cornerback and it could involve Mario Goodrich.

Rookie backup cornerbacks Kelee Ringo and Eli Ricks are viewed primarily as outside cornerbacks, while a potential wild card could be athletic rookie safety Sydney Brown.

With Philadelphia yet to make a statement on the news, we’re looking at ten potential replacements for Maddox.

Notre Dame vs Central Michigan: Pick Your Narrative

How do you feel about Notre Dame’s chances to take down Ohio State?

Notre Dame officially accomplished their biggest initial goal of the 2023 season. Entering the Ohio State matchup undefeated. In fact, when looking at scores alone, none of the first ramp-up month of games ended that close. Notre Dame has taken care of business. They’ve allowed next week to become in reality what it’s been in theory for literally years. A good old-fashioned midwestern war on the national stage.

As I’ve been saying for years in my videos, nothing is ever black and white with Notre Dame. There’s always room for nuance, always. I ask Irish fans the following question. Do you feel better, worse, or the same about Notre Dame’s chances to take down Ohio State after seeing the Central Michigan game?

Notre Dame’s Priorities for Central Michigan game

Priorities. Not next week – this week.

Notre Dame must stay focused this week as they host Central Michigan. The players must resist the urge to “look ahead” to Ohio State and forget the task at hand. The reality is, we may learn a lot about the Irish this week. How sharp will they look in their final contest before the one that has been circled on the calendar for years?

Certainly, getting a win is and should always be the first and foremost priority in any game. But should the game get out of hand in the Irish’s favor, which is the expectation, what should the Irish try and focus on?

Mac Jones likes Patriots newest addition to QB room

Mac Jones shares some familiarity with Patriots’ newly-signed QB Ian Book.

The New England Patriots made an addition on Wednesday, signing quarterback Ian Book to the practice squad. Quarterback Mac Jones weighed in on the signing, having seen Book play up close in college.

“Ian and I played against each other in college,” Jones said, per NESN’s Zack Cox. “He’s a great quarterback, and we’re excited to have him in our room.”

Book’s name might sound familiar to college football fans. He was the starting quarterback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 2017-2020. He recorded 8,948 passing yards and 72 touchdowns in four seasons of play.

Jones ran into Book at the Rose Bowl back in January 2021. Book went 27-of-39 passing for 229 yards and an interception in the game, while Jones tallied 297 yards and four touchdowns on 25-of-30 passing. Jones’ effort helped Alabama defeat Notre Dame by a 31-14 score.

Depth in the quarterback room is never a bad thing. Book’s prior success at the collegiate level offers a bit of intrigue as New England tries to find depth at the position. He also offers a replacement for Matt Corral, who is still on the exempt/left squad list.

Report: Patriots signing former fourth-round pick QB to practice squad

The Patriots are reportedly adding to their quarterback room.

A fourth quarterback is joining the room for the New England Patriots after the team reportedly signed former fourth-round draft pick Ian Book to the practice squad.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news on Wednesday through a source.

The Patriots already have Mac Jones as the starter, and ahead of the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, they signed Bailey Zappe back to the main roster. With Matt Corral on the reserve/left squad list, Book will be joining Malik Cunningham as the two practice squad quarterbacks.

Book has one start on his resume when he was with the New Orleans Saints back in 2021 against the Miami Dolphins. He was a rookie at the time, and the results were disastrous—12 completed passes for 135 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Saints waived him the following year, and he was then claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles, who ultimately waived him as well.

Perhaps the third time will be the charm for Book, who will look to play his way into a roster role with a Patriots team that had two simultaneous quarterback projects already going behind Jones.

Former Saints QB Ian Book signs with Patriots practice squad

Former Saints fourth-round draft pick Ian Book signs with the Patriots practice squad as New England’s fourth QB

It’s been a busy week for Ian Book. After trying out for the San Francisco 49ers, the former New Orleans Saints draft pick traveled cross-country to sign with the New England Patriots practice squad, as first reported by the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed.

A fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame in the 2021 draft, Book struggled mightily in his lone start as a rookie (forced into the game between injuries and COVID-19-related absences) and was unceremoniously cut once the coach who drafted him left town. It’s a little surprising that Sean Payton didn’t bring him along to the Denver Broncos, but he has his hands full trying to fix Russell Wilson.

Book spent the 2022 season on the Philadelphia Eagles roster and was let go during roster cuts this summer. He was tabbed to throw for a couple of tryout receivers in San Francisco on Tuesday and worked out for the Patriots early Wednesday morning before reaching an agreement.

He joins a crowded position group. Mac Jones is the starter with fan-favorite Bailey Zappe backing him up, and the Patriots have a promising rookie on the practice squad in Malik Cunningham. Matt Corral left the team without notice in what Patriots head coach Bill Belichick characterized as a personal matter. But Cunningham is working on other positions — much like Taysom Hill has done in New Orleans — so it makes sense to bring in a third passer to fill out the depth chart. Good luck to Book as he turns the page to this new chapter.

Notre Dame’s all-time winningest quarterback gets NFL workout

Nobody has won more games as a starting quarterback in Notre Dame history than Ian Book and now Book is getting looks for a new NFL job.

Nobody won more games as a Notre Dame starting quarterback than Ian Book. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2021 after helping lead the Irish to College Football Playoff appearances in 2018 and 2020.

Book has had trouble sticking in the NFL. He lasted one year with the Saints and spent last year with the Eagles, both in reserve roles. He was cut before this season by the Eagles.

Book is however still putting in the work to get on an NFL roster. He spent Tuesday working out with the 49ers and according to Tom Loy of 247Sports, will work out with the Patriots on Wednesday.

All the best to Book on getting hooked back up on an NFL roster.

Why are 49ers working out QB Ian Book?

Our read on why the #49ers worked out QB Ian Book:

The 49ers are working out a quarterback. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday reported former Saints and Eagles quarterback Ian Book would be holding a workout with San Francisco.

Given the team’s library of chaos under center the last couple years, any QB-related news puts antennas up. However, our read on the Book news is that the club is checking out available free agents to keep their list updated.

It likely does not mean they’re preparing to turn the page on either Brock Purdy, Sam Darnold or Brandon Allen.

The 49ers are likely just aiming to cover their bases in the event they wind up needing to add another QB. There aren’t even practice squad snaps available for Book. San Francisco has their backup take the scout team reps, and with Darnold and Allen already on the roster there wouldn’t really be a role for a fourth QB.

Book, a fourth-round pick of the Saints in 2021, started one game as a rookie and went 12-of-20 for 135 yards and two interceptions in a loss.

Don’t expect much additional news to come of the Book workout. Perhaps the team revisits him in the event that one of their QBs goes down. Until then they’re just staying up to date on free agents, not preparing to author another chaotic chapter in their recent QB history.
