No Longhorns were selected in the 2022 NFL draft

Texas gets shut out from the NFL Draft for the first time since 2014.

No Texas Longhorns were selected in the 2022 NFL draft for the first time since 2014.

Kicker Cameron Dicker and defensive back Josh Thompson received NFL combine invites and hoped to hear their names called but had no luck. The two should have some options at their disposal as undrafted free agents.

Looking ahead to next season, Texas is expected to fare better in the 2023 NFL draft. Bijan Robinson leads a talented group of Longhorns who will be pro-eligible next April.

Steve Sarkisian is tasked to produce more NFL talent in a hurry. Texas’ last first-round pick was Malcolm Brown way back in 2015. The 2005 draft was the last season where Texas had a first-rounder taken from the offensive side of the ball.

Putting more players in the league shows the strength of a program and serves as a valuable recruiting tool.

WATCH: D’Onta Foreman goes beast mode in the divisional round

The Texas ex is making plays on the biggest stage.

The Tennesee Titans signing D’Onta Foreman has proved to be one of the biggest midseason moves in the entire NFL this year.

The former third round pick in the 2017 NFL draft had struggled to a stable home in the league prior to this season. Tennessee has become a great place to revive his career.

Foreman proved to be a formidable replacement for superstar Derrick Henry. The Texas ex was a major part of Tennesee’s playoff push and is continuing to make plays in the divisional round, even with Henry back.

Watch here as Foreman does his best Marshawn Lynch impression tearing through the Bengals defense setting up Tennessee in the red zone after a 45-yard gain.

Foreman’s Titans are in a battle against Cinincanti with a spot in the AFC championship on the line.

Longhorns in the NFL: Week 13 recap and highlights led by Colt McCoy

How did Colt McCoy’s first start in the NFL since 2014 go? Plus a look at the rest of the Texas Longhorns in the NFL.

This week in the wild NFL season, the all-time leading passer in Texas Longhorns history made his return to the starting lineup. Colt McCoy earned his first start since 2014 when he beat the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football for the Washington Football Team. He would start for the New York Giants against the Seattle Seahawks and would get the same result as they won the game.

Former Longhorns safety Quandre Diggs would catch a deflected pass from McCoy for the only interception in the game. Giants outlasted them 17-12. In the Jacksonville JaguarsMinnesota Vikings game, we saw Kris Boyd matched up with Collin Johnson. The 6’6″ wide out would get the better of Boyd on a couple of occassions. It brought memories of practice on the Forty Acres back.

It wasn’t a great day for another former Longhorn as the Vikings waived an injured Holton Hill. He was a projected starter at the beginning of the year but injuries prevented him from staying on the field.

Did the announcers jinx kicker Justin Tucker? His perfect streak of 70-consecutive kicks comes to an end moments after Joe Buck and Troy Aikman discussed the streak for the Ravens kicker.

Longhorns in the NFL: Week 12 recap and highlights

Week 12 of the NFL season isn’t technically over with the Pittsburgh-Baltimore game set for Wednesday. How the other former Horns performed?

The NFL’s Week 12 was a wild one. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens were set to kick off on Thanksgiving. That game was moved to Sunday. Then to Monday. Then to Tuesday. Then to Wednesday. Who knows if that game is going to take place before week 13 kicks off. The Ravens were also supposed to host the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. That game is now kicking off on Tuesday, allegedly.

This week’s NFL action saw the Texas Longhorns’ all-time leading passer return to the football field. Due to an injury to New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, Colt McCoy was thrust into action against the Cincinnati Bengals. He would lead them to a win to give them possession of first place in the NFC East.

The weekend also saw two players from the 2020 NFL Draft class have big contributions to their team. Collin Johnson showed by the Longhorns offense missed him this year and Brandon Jones recorded the first sack of his NFL career.

A look at the rest of the Texas exes:

Horns in the NFL: Week 11 in the NFL recap

Week 11 of the NFL season is now under wraps. We take a look at how each player performed in the National Football League over the weekend.

Week 11 of the NFL season wrapped up on Monday night with one former Longhorn in action. Malcom Brown and the Los Angeles Rams were looking to take down Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on MNF. Despite getting the fewest carries of the backs, Brown led the Rams in rushing.

The Tennessee Titans and the Baltimore Ravens game featured the most Texas exes with five total. Kenny Vaccaro was inactive for this game or else six former Longhorns would have been playing in that game. The Arizona CardinalsSeattle Seahawks game featured four more former Longhorns.

Horns in the NFL: Texas Exes performances in Week 10

Another week of NFL football in the books, Longhorns Wire takes a look at how the Texas Exes performed in week 10.

Week 10 of the NFL season saw plenty of former Texas Longhorns in action over the three-day schedule. It started on Thursday night with the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts. It all started with D’Onta Foreman catching the five-yard pass from Ryan Tannehill for the touchdown. However, the Titans didn’t have a whole lot else to celebrate on that night.

Another former running back would also get into the act on Sunday when Malcolm Brown of the Rams scored not once, but twice in the win over the Seahawks. That game also saw quite the performance from defensive tackle Poona Ford.

A look at each former Longhorn player in the NFL throughout Week 10 of the season.

WATCH: Former Longhorn running back scores first touchdown on TNF

Former Longhorn running back D’Onta Foreman started the scoring for the Tennessee Titans against the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday Night.

Thursday Night Football pit the Indianapolis Colts against the Tennessee Titans for the early weekend matchup. This game features several former Longhorns in action on both sides of the matchup. For the Colts, they have wide receiver Marcus Johnson. For the Titans it is a trio of players that include Kenny Vaccaro and Geoff Swaim. The other is running back D’Onta Foreman who fills in for Derrick Henry when he needs a breather.

Foreman would start the scoring for the Titans in this game. Facing a first and goal from the 5-yard line, Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill found Foreman for the catch and run into the end zone. You can check out the highlight below.

Early on in the first quarter the score remains 7-0 in favor of the Titans. Foreman has one reception for five yards and no carries up to this point in the game. You can check out the game on National Fox broadcast.

Two Longhorns in the first round of latest USA TODAY Sports mock draft

In the latest mock draft from USA TODAY Sports, the Longhorns find a player on each side of the ball going in the top 32.

As we make our way through the month of November, the NFL Draft is inching closer. In recent years the Longhorns haven’t been a part of the first round. In fact, 2015 was the last time that Texas had a player going in the first round (Malcom Brown, DT). To find the last time the Longhorns had two first round picks you need to go back even further. From 2004-06, Texas had multiple first round picks in each draft. Over a decade later could it finally happen again?

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA TODAY Sports released his latest mock for the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. Yes, he did mock not one but two Texas Longhorns in the first round. It has been 15 years since Texas has seen it happen in the opening round.

21. Jaguars (from Rams) — Sam Cosmi, OT, Texas: Cam Robinson isn’t cutting it as a blindside protector. Cosmi or another fleet-footed left tackle should draw Jacksonville’s eye here if the team wants to provide a proper support system for its quarterback of the future.

With the second overall pick in this mock the Jaguars selected quarterback Justin Fields from Ohio State. With their second pick they received in the Jalen Ramsey trade, the Jags go with Samuel Cosmi to protect their investment. Cosmi has long been mocked in the first round consistently, viewed as one of the top five tackles in this upcoming class.

24. Buccaneers — Joseph Ossai, OLB, Texas: A relentless pass rusher like Ossai no doubt would be of great value to Tampa Bay, especially with Shaquil Barrett’s future still unclear as he plays on the franchise tag.

If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking for a replacement for Shaquil Barrett, look no further than Joseph Ossai. He is relentless as they come. Not only that but Ossai plays the run, the pass and can get after the quarterback. I am sure that Spencer Sanders is still suffering from the lingering effects of that Saturday in Stillwater. Joseph Ossai has become a fast climber as of late and now he has the league’s attention, or at least in the NFL Draft community.

Report: Former Longhorns QB set to make first NFL start for the Dallas Cowboys

Current Dallas Cowboys quarterback and former Texas Longhorn passer Garrett Gilbert will make his first NFL start Sunday.

Garrett Gilbert didn’t have the greatest run as a quarterback at the University of Texas. He spent three seasons before moving to SMU following the 2011 season. During his time for the Longhorns Garrett threw for 13 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He also only complete 56.7% of his passes. He had a better two-year run with SMU than he did at Texas. Just never lived up to the expectations that were placed on him.

All that is now meaningless as he prepares for his first start in the NFL. He has bounced around since 2014. Gilbert now finds himself in the starting role due to an injury to Dak Prescott that ended his season. The backup Andy Dalton suffered a nasty concussion that cost him two games and then tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of this game. No pressure kid, you only are facing the last remaining undefeated team in the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I feel like it’s my job to go out there and perform and execute our game plan. And so, you know, what I bring to the table, I think that’s less important than just understanding what my job is and being the best quarterback I can be for this team. – Garrett Gilbert

Gilbert making his first NFL start for the Dallas Cowboys is a great story for the former five-star quarterback recruit. The interesting part is that he will make his first NFL start for the team that beat his father in his last NFL start. Gale Gilbert played in the NFL from 1985-1995. Against the Cowboys he completed 20/32 passes for 206 yards and three interceptions. He was sacked six times in that game. The Cowboys would go on to win the Super Bowl that year.

The final score in that game was 23-9 in favor of Dallas. Coincidentally enough that was the final score in last week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In the days following that outcome it was reported that Garrett could be the starter for the game after a poor performance by rookie Ben DiNucci.
