Four Notre Dame commits to play in Polynesian Bowl

Want to watch the future of the football program?

Want to catch a glimpse at some of the Notre Dame stars of tomorrow? Was the All-American Bowl not enough for you? You’re in luck if you’re able to stay up late. The Polynesian Bowl will be played at 11:30 p.m. EST Saturday on the CBS Sports Network, and four recruits who have committed to Notre Dame are on the roster.

The four players to look out for are as follows:

  • Receiver Tobias Merriweather of Camas, Washington
  • Tight end Holden Staes of Atlanta
  • Linebacker Niuafe Tuihalamaka of Mission Hills, California
  • Offensive tackle Aamil Wagner of Dayton, Ohio

Notre Dame commits who previously have played in this game include Chris Tyree, Marist Liufau, Jayson Ademilola, Braden Lenzy and Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa. While making this game obviously is not a reflection of how they’ll play in college, it does make people excited about what the future of the program could be. If you’re curious about that or you simply want to watch more football, this is the game to tune into.

Quick Notre Dame Football recruiting update

The Irish were active this past week on the recruiting trail

A commitment this week as 2023 Florida running back Sedrick Irvin Jr. made the pledge yesterday to the Irish. It now makes five total commits in the ‘23 class, one that is looking very impressive at this early state.

There wasn’t too much action on the 2022 side, as the Irish have 21 total commits, which ranks as the 2nd best class in the country according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Find out below the most recent action in Irish recruiting.

Get up to date on Notre Dame football’s recruiting

It’s been a little quiet on the recruiting front for Notre Dame, but that doesn’t mean that things aren’t happening.

With the first home game on the horizon, there will be plenty of information about potential recruits that could end up in South Bend. Here’s a quick wrap up of how some commits are doing as well as some notes on uncommitted prospects.

Where Notre Dame commits landed on ESPN’s updated recruit rankings

There’s a lot of names on this list

The summer camp circuit is pretty much over and it has given plenty of new eyes on players. Recently, ESPN has updated their recruiting rankings for the top-300 players in the country. Find out below where the 2022 Notre Dame commits landed in their newest rankings update.

Former Notre Dame tight end commit finds his new home

Enjoy the mitten

Almost a year ago, Georgia tight end Jack Nickel decided he knew where he wanted to attend college, South Bend. Over the next nine months, Notre Dame thought it had once again gone into the Peach State and grabbed another impressive prospect.

Then in April, Nickel reopened his recruitment, decommited from the Irish and looked at other schools. It didn’t take long for Brian Kelly and his staff to identify others at this position, grabbing commitments from Eli Raridon and Holden Staes, effectively closing the door on Nickel’s return to the Irish class.

The door was officially closed yesterday as Nickel made his second verbal, this time to Michigan State.

Even thought the Irish ultimately missed on Nickel, both Raridon and Staes are ranked higher than the former commit. It seems it all worked out for both parties. Kelly found better replacements at tight end, and Nickel is going to a team that needs an influx of talent.

Scouts view: Newest Notre Dame commit, 2022 Tight End Staes

Tight End U just got another big time prospect

The run on Georgian’s continues for the Irish, something that we mentioned earlier this week as a potential.

Although the Irish did lose a commitment from tight end Jack Nickel, they’ve “replaced” him with another Georgia TE, in Holden Staes.

Tight End U has just gotten stronger, as Staes will be joining players like Michael Mayer, George Takacs, Cane Berrong and others in a very impressive group. Here is what to expect when Staes makes it to South Bend next fall.

[listicle id=17189]

At six-foot-four-inches and 240-pounds, Staes has the perfect frame for his position. He’s athletic enough to be a force at defense end as well, but his future is on the offensive side of the ball. A defensive matchup nightmare, Staes can stand up in the slot or put his hand down at the end of the line, creating mismatches wherever he lines up. Too fast for linebackers and too big for defensive backs, he uses his large frame to “box out” defenders when going up for the ball.

Not the fastest tight end you’ll see but enough speed to keep defenses honest. Staes isn’t just a one-dimensional player, he does a good job blocking, keeping a solid base and his feet moving.

The Irish once again reload at the position, and even though Staes is heading into a crowded tight end room, he still could make a mark early in his career. The high usage of the position in the Notre Dame offense tends to see more players get opportunities early and often in their careers. Once again, the Irish have another tight end that can make a big difference in the offense.
