Pelicans’ Herbert Jones had a game-winning sequence so unreal you have to see it to believe it

Not. On. Herb.

Herbert Jones is only in his second professional season in the NBA, but he plays the game like he is a seasoned veteran.

Jones is the type of player whose intelligence and hustle may not show up in the box score. He has an impact on winning as the ultimate glue guy on both ends of the floor, and he is able to make the type of plays that can help turn a contender into a champion.

That was never more clear than in the final few seconds of the Pelicans’ victory over the Thunder on Monday. Jones was utterly phenomenal to seal the deal with this sequence.

First, with 2.3 seconds on the clock, Jones drew a charge to force a turnover. It was his second charge of the night — and one of the many instances where he was disruptive. He also added 3 steals and 4 blocks.

This charge pumped up the home crowd as New Orleans got the ball back, and Jones was tasked with handling the inbound pass. Jones tried something incredibly bold: He threw the ball off the back of Oklahoma City’s Aleksej Pokusevski, then drew another foul to earn a trip to the free-throw line. He nailed them both.

Finally, at the charity stripe, Jones nailed both of his attempts to secure the win for the Pelicans. It was an absurd series of events for Jones, who also played phenomenal defense on Thunder star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander throughout the game.

This was the type of performance that will go down on Jones’ resumé when he lobbies for All-Defense consideration at the end of the season.

Alabama offers highly-coveted small forward out of Texas

2024 small forward Dink Pate received an offer from the Tide on Saturday. He is listed at 6-foot-7, 180 pounds.

The Alabama men’s basketball coaching staff recently extended an offer to Dink Pate, one of the more impressive players from the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Pate is rated as a four-star prospect by 247Sports and is listed at 6-foot-7 and 180 pounds. His frame is very similar to former Alabama forward Herb Jones, who came out of high school listed at 6-foot-7 and 183 pounds. Alabama fans would probably be ecstatic to welcome a player similar to Jones to the future roster.

Pate has already landed 24 offers heading into his junior season of high school. Several of the programs that have extended offers are Auburn, Houston, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M among others.

Alabama may have a difficult time competing with the aforementioned programs in recruiting Pate, but there doesn’t appear to be a clear-cut leader at the present time.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Alabama basketball and the recruitment process of Dink Pate.

JD Davison could join an Alabama-loaded Pelicans team through the NBA draft

Where will this former Tide star land in tomorrow’s NBA draft?

With the NBA draft taking place tomorrow June 23rd, all of the final mock predictions are taking place. Bryan Kalbrosky of USA Today shared his updated draft which included a landing spot for former Crimson Tide star [autotag]JD Davison[/autotag].

Kalbrosky predicts that Davison will join [autotag]Kira Lewis Jr[/autotag]. and [autotag]Herb Jones[/autotag] in New Orleans with the Pelicans’ No. 41 overall selection. New Orleans would be a great landing spot for JD with these familiar faces and a very similar style of play as in Tuscaloosa.

In Davison’s lone season with the Tide, he averaged 8.5 points 4.8 rebounds, and 4.3 assists on over 46% from the field. He also is very active on the defensive end posting a steal a game.

Davison has the skill-set and star power to thrive at the next level.

Alabama Morning Drive: Nick Saban takes shot at Texas A&M, saying Aggies ‘bought every player’

The latest news and notes involving the Alabama Crimson Tide on Thursday morning.

Good morning, Alabama nation! Welcome back to our Thursday edition of Alabama Morning Drive! I hope everyone is having a good week as we inch closer and closer to the weekend.

It has been a fun-filled week here at Roll Tide Wire and we are excited to bring you, even more, news and notes involving the Crimson Tide this morning.

Late Wednesday night coach [autotag]Nick Saban [/autotag] nearly broke the internet with his remarks on NIL and Texas A&M. While speaking at an event in Birmingham, Saban did not hold anything back with his accusations against his former assistant Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies.

“You read about it, you know who they are. We were second in recruiting last year. A&M was first. A&M bought every player on their team. Made a deal for name, image and likeness. We didn’t buy one player. Aight? But I don’t know if we’re going to be able to sustain that in the future, because more and more people are doing it. It’s tough.”

Coach Saban didn’t stop there, he would continue to blast programs such as Jackson State and Miami for taking advantage of NIL.

“I mean, Jackson State paid a guy a million dollars last year that was a really good Division I player to come to school. It was in the paper and they bragged about it. Nobody did anything about it.”

“Those guys from Miami that are going to play basketball there for $400,000, that’s in the newspaper. The guy tells you how he’s doing it.”

This story will only continue to grow and progress throughout the day and Roll Tide Wire will be here every step of the way!

Let’s take a look at a few other stories that Alabama fans should be checking in on.

Herb Jones earns NBA All-Rookie second-team honors

Herb Jones’ stellar NBA season earns him All-Rookie second-team honors.

After a stellar career at the University of Alabama, [autotag]Herb Jones[/autotag] made a quick transition to the NBA during his rookie campaign earning second-team All-Rookie honors.

Jones averaged 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game but he really made a name for himself on the defensive end of the floor. Jones quickly became one of the stingiest defenders in the NBA even earning the famous hashtag “not on Herb”.

Jones helped lead the New Orleans Pelicans to the NBA playoffs before being bounced by the top seed in the Western Conference, the Phoneix Suns.

The 23-year-old Jones was selected by the Pelicans with the No. 35 overall selection in the 2021 NBA draft.

Jones appears to have a bright future in the league given his great length and athleticism along with his continued improvement in shooting the ball from the perimeter.

Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for all the latest on Jones and all the former Tide stars now in the NBA.

Former Alabama Basketball star Herb Jones taking the NBA playoffs by storm

The former Tide Hoops star is making himself a household name with impressive performances in the playoffs!

To the fans of the Crimson Tide Alabama, it’s no surprise to see [autotag]Herb Jones[/autotag] making a massive impact on basketball’s biggest stage, the NBA playoffs.

Jones was a fundamental piece of Nate Oats’ rebuild at Alabama with it all coming to fruition during Jones’ senior year. The Tide had an in-conference record of 16-2 to win the SEC regular season title as well as winning the SEC tournament and making it to the Sweet 16.

The 6’8 forward from Greensboro, Alabama was heralded with not only the Conference Player of the Year, but Defensive Player of the Year as well. He was recognized as a Third-Team All-American.

The New Orleans Pelicans selected Jones with a second-round pick, No. 35 overall, where he joined former Alabama star Kira Lewis Jr.

Jones and the Pelicans face the Phoenix Suns in a vital game 5 this evening with the series already split 2-2. Jones has had a sensational series this far averaging 9.5 points per game as well as being a primary defender on guard Chris Paul.

Flying around and bringing an unprecedented level of intensity, Jones has quickly turned into the X-factor the Pelicans have been in dire need of.

On the offensive side, Jones is going to make a name for himself as well.

The Pelicans and Jones hope to win game five tonight and head back to New Orleans with a chance to close out the one seed.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Jones and other former Alabama basketball players in the NBA.

See where JD Davison, Keon Ellis land in latest 2022 NBA mock draft

Two former Crimson Tide stars get selected in the latest 2022 NBA mock draft!

Alabama’s 2021-2022 men’s basketball season did not go the way many had hoped. The Crimson Tide made the NCAA Tournament, but was bounced in the first round by Notre Dame.

Numerous players are transferring from the program, few are returning and others are entering the NBA draft.

In the latest 2022 NBA mock draft done by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz.

The mock draft features two former Crimson Tide stars in [autotag]JD Davison[/autotag] and [autotag]Keon Ellis[/autotag].

Though they are both second-round picks, it is likely they will be on an NBA roster. [autotag]Herb Jones[/autotag] on the New Orleans Pelicans is a prime example.

ESPN does not offer explanations for the two picks, but both teams are loaded with young and rising talent. Both Davison and Ellis carry unique skills that could make them valuable players for their potential respective programs.

First … JD Davison

Pelicans’ CJ McCollum sees future All-Defensive teams for Herb Jones

McCollum believes big things are in store for Jones after a tremendous rookie season with the Pelicans.

Herb Jones quietly performed at a high level for the New Orleans Pelicans and emerged as one of the top first-year players throughout the 2021-22 season.

However, his recent play in the playoffs hasn’t been so quiet.

Jones and the Pelicans were featured only a few times on national TV this season and flew relatively under the radar. The team would get some recognition here and there from pundits, but the group was far from a household name.

Now, on the biggest stage in the game, the Pelicans have arrived.

Led by Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum, who was acquired at the trade deadline, the Pelicans overcame a 1-12 start to the season and earned the eighth seed in the play-in tournament. They now sit in a tied series against the Phoenix Suns, who had the best record in the league.

Jones, the 35th pick, has also contributed to the Pelicans’ success and is a big reason why the team finds itself with a chance to beat the best team from the regular season. He has made for himself on the defensive end and is viewed as one of the top perimeter players.

His play has impressed those around him, including McCollum.

It is incredible to see his attention to detail and his athleticism. I’ve never seen a guy this young, this sharp, this smart, this unbothered, this unfazed. He’s getting the toughest assignments every night. It don’t bother him. He comes in the same personality, same swagger. You know what you’re going to get with him. I think the really cool part is he can guard on the ball and off the ball. A lot of guys can’t do that, especially rookies.

Jones averaged 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.7 steals in 78 games this season. His 130 total steals ranked third among all players in the NBA while his 243 total deflections were fourth. He was the only player to have at least 120 steals and 50 blocks.

In his latest effort, Jones had 13 points, three assists, three blocked shots, two rebounds and two steals in the Pelicans’ 118-103 win in Game 4 on Sunday. Perhaps most impressive about his performance was all three of his blocks were on 3-point attempts.

Jones received one third-place vote in the Rookie of the Year balloting released on Saturday but the 23-year-old is expected to be in the running for the All-Rookie first team. He could also pick up some votes for an All-Defensive team.

Rookie players earning All-Defensive honors is very rare. In fact, when Matisse Thybulle earned a second-team placement last season, he became only the 26th player ever in their first or second season to accomplish the feat.

Jones may not join Thybulle on that list this season but could do so next year now that his name is on the national radar. The future appears to be very bright in New Orleans as Jones has established himself as a franchise cornerstone.

“The sky is the limit for him,” McCollum said. “He is going to be very good, not only for us but for this league going forward. He’ll be first-team All-Defense as soon as they start watching Pelicans games.”

LOOK: Twitter reacts to Herb Jones’ impressive NBA Playoffs performance

Herb Jones is finally getting some national recognition!

Former Alabama guard [autotag]Herb Jones[/autotag] as selected in the second round of the 2021 NBA draft by the New Orleans Pelicans, a team that is not unfamiliar with Crimson Tide players.

The Pelicans also drafted Kira Lewis jr. a year before, and also picked up John Petty, who is currently on the Birmingham Squadron G-League team for the Pelicans.

In the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs, the Pelicans and the top-seeded Phoenix Suns are in a battle right now. Following last night’s win for New Orleans, the series is all tied up a two apiece.

Jones was the star of the show. In 35 minutes of playing time, Jones went 3-for-7 from the field, made seven of eight free throws, had three assists, two rebounds, two steals and three blocks. Jones’ contribution to the offensive side of the ball was 13 points.

Though his stats from the game may not seem worthy of national praise, the rookie was electric on both ends of the floor. Fans from all over the nation took to Twitter to share their thoughts.
