Hawaii Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Rainbow Warriors miss from the Mountain West’s Mountain Division?

It’s an interesting overall schedule for Hawaii, and missing Air Force and Boise State – a positive to not have to play either one – is just a part of it.

With a road trip to New Mexico State and an open date to follow, you’d think the scheduling gods would’ve figured out how to get the Rainbow Warriors to stick around and go up the road to face New Mexico.

But the Lobos aren’t on the slate. Defending Mountain West champ Utah State is, and so are Colorado State and Wyoming. The one road trip is to Fort Collins to play the Rams.

Hawaii Football Schedule What To Know: Obviously it’s done for a reason, but …

Part of the thing with Hawaii is to help it not have to spend three months constantly on a plane. However, there’s no real ability to settle in at home in the middle of the season.

Three of the first four games are in Honolulu, and there’s a nice run of three home games in four weeks before closing out against San Jose State, but the team doesn’t get two weeks in a row at home from September 10th until mid-November.

Hawaii Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s interesting.

It’s not like Vanderbilt and WKU are going to be layups at home to start the season before going to Michigan. There are enough winnable games to push for seven wins – unless there’s a break given again and the team gets bowl eligible with six victories out of their 13 games – but it’s going to be a grind.

Own home, and this should be a fun slate.

Georgia football DB selects transfer destination

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Hugh Nelson is transferring to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Hugh Nelson is transferring to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. Nelson is a redshirt sophomore previously entered into the NCAA transfer portal earlier this offseason. Now, Nelson has found his new home.

Hugh Nelson joins fellow walk-on Kolby Wyatt as the second Georgia Bulldog to transfer to Hawaii this offseason.

Nelson will be immediately eligible at Hawaii (like all transfers this offseason). He graduates in May of 2021 and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Nelson walked on to the football team in 2018 and took a redshirt that season while he primarily served as a key scout team player. In fact, Nelson won the Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year award for his effort in 2018.

Nelson played in the Arkansas State game in the 2019 season, but did not appear in any games during 2020. Prior to coming to the University of Georgia, Nelson ran track and played football during his time at Hillgrove High School.

Hugh Nelson announced his decision to transfer to Hawaii via his Twitter account:

Georgia football tight end picks transfer destination

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Kolby Wyatt is transferring to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football program.

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Kolby Wyatt entered the NCAA transfer portal following UGA’s loss to Florida. Now, Kolby Wyatt has decided to transfer to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football program. It’s a long ways away from Athens for Wyatt, but he is from San Deigo, California, so he won’t be too far from there.

We wish Wyatt the best at Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors typically sport an explosive passing offense, so hopefully Wyatt can find significant playing time for Hawaii.

Tre’ McKitty, Darnell Washington and John FitzPatrick have received the majority of playing time at tight end for the Bulldogs this season. Four-star tight end Brock Bowers has additionally committed to Georgia. Wyatt has seen minimal action this season after playing in three games in 2019.

Wyatt, a junior, began his career at UGA as a defensive lineman, but switched numbers and positions last season. He has two years of eligibility left following this season.

College football is projected to have a lot of transfers following this season, so be prepared for more to come.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Offense 3 Things To Know

– New head coach Todd Graham isn’t going to totally change things around, but there’s going to be a bit of a rebranding with the new run and gun offense under coordinator and former Tulsa quarterback GJ Kinne.

There will still be lots of throwing, and the attack will still want to operate at a high tempo, but there will be a bit more for the ground game while also looking to control the clock just a wee bit more.

And if the turnovers can slow down, that would be nice, too. More on that in a bit.

The passing game that finished fifth in the nation for an offense that led the Mountain West and was 13th in the country loses a ton of talent. QB Cole McDonald is gone along with three of the top four pass catchers.

However, 87-catch senior Jared Smart is back, senior Melquise Stovall is a great option when healthy, and on the way is North Texas transfer Rico Bussey to likely be the No. 1 guy. Texas Tech transfer Tyler Carr gives the Rainbow Warriors an immediate option at tight end.

Sophomore Chevan Cordeiro is the likely main man to step in for McDonald. He knows what Graham and company want to do, and he has the starting experience to ease the transition. There are several other options, with 6-3 junior Justin Uahinui the likely backup as last year’s No. 3.

The offensive line was solid in pass protection and was fifth in the nation – a function of the offense – in tackles for loss allowed. All five starters are expected back, there’s a ton of depth. and around junior left tackle Ilm Manning there’s a whole lot to like.

It’s not going to be Wisconsin running the ball, but junior Miles Reed is coming off a tea-leading 908 yards and eight scores, but No. 2 RB Fred Holly is in the transfer portal. Cordeiro can run, too, but 225-pound Hekili Keliiliki is the only other running back on the roster as this is being written.
