Philadelphia Eagles waive WR Hakeem Butler

Philadelphia Eagles waive WR Hakeem Butler

As the Eagles headed off to Florence, New Jersey for joint practices with the Jets on Tuesday and Wednesday, they made another roster move, waiving wide receiver Hakeem Butler.

The former Iowas State star has played wide receiver and tight end while with Philadelphia and he’ll be most remembered for being unable to haul in a goalline fade with the game on the line despite hovering over the opposing cornerback.

The Eagles have one more roster move to make in order to get to the 80-player limit (81 for the Eagles with the international exemption for defensive end Matt Leo).

Philadelphia Eagles protect 4 practice squad players for Week 17 vs. Washington

For the final time during the 2020 NFL season, the Eagles have protected four practice squad players in advance of Sunday’s matchup against Washington.

Butler was waived and re-signed to the practice squad back in November. The former wide receiver originally agreed to sign with the Eagles off of Carolina’s practice squad on September 29, playing in two games, primarily on special teams.

Smith originally signed with the Bears following the 2020 NFL Draft and was cut at the end of Training Camp. Smith was eventually signed to the Cowboys’ active roster. He did not appear in a game before he was waived on October 26 and signed to the Eagles practice squad shortly after.

The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing Jason Croom back, signing the tight end to their practice squad just hours after releasing him from the active roster.

Croom was originally signed by the Eagles to their practice squad in late September and was elevated twice from the practice squad ahead of the Steelers and Ravens games, catching a touchdown against Baltimore in his one snap. He was signed to the active roster on October 21 and played 10 more snaps on offense in the wins over the Giants and Cowboys.

The Eagles still have an open roster spot.

Hakeem Butler is back in Philadelphia, signing to the Eagles practice squad along with free-agent linebacker Rashad Smith. Philadelphia waived WR Marcus Green and LB Dante Olson in the process.

With Dallas Goedert and Jalen Reagor returning to the roster, Butler was the odd man out and will be remembered most for his failed attempt at a fade route with the Eagles trailing the Giants 14-10.

Former Cardinals draft pick Hakeem Butler converting to TE with Eagles

Butler will move to tight end and attempt to get his NFL career going.

Former Arizona Cardinals 2019 fourth-round pick Hakeem Butler has a new team and a new position. After getting cut by the Cardinals before the season this year, he had signed with the Carolina Panthers practice squad. Arizona faces Carolina this week.

However, he is back on an NFL roster. He has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles but is changing positions. He is moving to tight end.

The move to tight end perhaps can jumpstart his career. At 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, he has the size and speed to be a difference maker at tight end. However, he will need to learn to block and likely will need to add at least 15 pounds.

The Eagles need help at tight end, as Dallas Goedert was placed on injured reserve.

The Cardinals could see Butler. They play the Eagles in Week 15.

Eagles sign WR/TE Hakeem Butler off Panthers practice squad

Philadelphia is listing the 6-foot-5, 227 pound Butler as a tight end instead of a wide receiver.

With tight end Dallas Goedert going down on Sunday with a small ankle fracture, the Philadelphia Eagles were in need of another red zone weapon.

Today, the team filled that need by signing Hakeem Butler off the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. Philadelphia is listing the 6-foot-5, 227 pound Butler as a tight end instead of a wide receiver.

Carolina could still use one of those weapons of their own.

They never really tried to replace Greg Olsen after they released him and their most promising candidate, 6-foot-2 rookie wide receiver Omar Bayless is on injured reserve for the year. After three games, they rank No. 30 in red zone touchdown efficiency.

In related news, the team has reactivated defensive back Natrell Jamerson to the practice squad. He had previously been on the COVID-19/reserve list.

There’s still one open spot on the practice squad following the release of kicker Kai Forbath last week.

Philadelphia Eagles sign TE Hakeem Butler to the active roster off the Panthers practice squad

Eagles sign Hakeem Butler to the active roster off the Panthers practice squad

The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to sign Hakeem Butler off of the Carolina Panthers practice squad on Tuesday afternoon after the team placed star tight end Dallas Goedert on Injured Reserve.

Goedert suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Bengals.

At 6-5, 224 pounds, the second-year player out of Iowa State was a fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2019 at wide receiver and spent his entire rookie season on Injured Reserve.

He’ll now transition to tight end for the Eagles.

In three seasons at Iowa State as an explosive wide receiver, Butler totaled 110 catches for 2,149 yards and 18 touchdowns. He set a single-season school record with 1,318 receiving yards in his final year.

Panthers sign WR Hakeem Butler to practice squad, release undrafted DT

The team just announced that Butler has been added to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers have hosted a few interesting free agents this week, including former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Hakeem Butler. The team just announced that Butler has been added to their practice squad. To make room for him, they released undrafted defensive tackle Myles Adams.

Butler (6-foot-5, 227 pounds) was a fourth-round pick by Arizona in last year’s NFL draft. While his frame and athletic profile are enticing, the fact that he’s on a practice squad not even a year and a half after getting drafted doesn’t speak well to how things have gone for him in the NFL so far.

Carolina’s offense is still in need of a big-bodied red zone weapon, though. General manager Marty Hurney could be hoping that Butler develops into one after the team lost the promising 6-foot-3 rookie wideout Omar Bayless to the injured reserve list for the season.

The Panthers also have wide receiver Keith Kirkwood currently on the short-term IR list. He will be eligible to return after Week 3.

If any other receivers get injured this week, there’s an outside chance Butler could be active against the Chargers.
