UNLV Ends Season With Bowl Loss To Kansas

In a high-scoring bowl game, Kansas held on for a 49-36 win over UNLV at the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix on Tuesday evening.

There were 85 total points scored between UNLV and Kansas. The 2015-2016 Guaranteed Rate Bowl was the last time two teams combined for 85 points in the bowl game.

Kansas jumped on UNLV in the first half and had a 28-7 lead in the first half. Despite being down by 21 points, UNLV took advantage of Kansas’s penalties. Kansas racked up 135 yards of penalties in the first half.

The momentum shifted in UNLV’s favor after halftime and the Rebels scored 17 unanswered points in the second and third quarters. Kansas quarterback Jason Bean was intercepted twice in the third quarter by UNLV defensive back Cameron Oliver.

At the start of the fourth, Kansas reclaimed a double-digit lead following Bean’s 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Lawrence Arnold. Kansas led UNLV, 35-24. UNLV quickly responded with a Jacob De Jesus 11-yard touchdown run with 12:06 to go in the game. With a failed two-point conversion, UNLV trailed by five points, 35-30.

Arnold added to Kansas’s lead following a 56-yard receiving touchdown at the 11:10 mark in the fourth quarter. Kansas was ahead 42-30.

By the end of the game, the Jayhawks capped off a 49-36 win. Even with 49 points scored, Kansas finished the game with 18 penalties.

Kansas closed out its season with a 9-4 record. For UNLV, head coach Barry Odom posted a 9-5 record in his first season. This was the most single-season wins for UNLV since 1984.

The future is promising for UNLV after the program reached a bowl game and had a winning season for the first time since 2013.

UNLV and Kansas are scheduled to meet again next season in Lawrence, Kan., on Sept. 14, 2024.

The Rebels are bowling for the first time in a while.

Generally speaking, not much was expected of the UNLV Rebels this fall, but the program defied expectations and will head to their first bowl since 2013 when they square off with the Big 12’s Kansas Jayhawks in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

UNLV had high internal expectations for itself, however, dismissing former head coach Marcus Arroyo last off-season and bringing in Barry Odom to replace him. In Odom’s first year at the helm, the Rebels posted a 9-4 record, the first time the program had won that many games since winning 11 in 1984, and reached the Mountain West championship game for the first time. Though they fell short on Saturday against Boise State, UNLV still has a chance to reach double-digit wins for the first time in 40 years.

Kansas, meanwhile, continued their renaissance under head coach Lance Leipold and won eight games for the first time since 2008. The highwater mark came in defeating Oklahoma at home back in late October, though they’ll have the rare opportunity to defeat both teams from the Silver State having beaten Nevada on the road in non-conference play.

This year’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl is set for Tuesday, December 26. It will be broadcast on ESPN, kicking off at 6:00 PM Pacific/7:00 PM Mountain.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl What Happened

It got interesting. Wisconsin was rolling right along with touchdown runs from Chez Mellusi and Braelon Allen as part of a 24-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. It was dominating the time of possession battle, the defense wasn’t having a problem, and then Oklahoma State got hot.

– The Cowboys took a 7-3 lead on an 84-yard catch and run for a score from Stephon Johnson, but that would be about it until a ten-play drive in the early fourth finished with a 4th-and-goal push pass for a score to Ollie Gordon.

The Badgers stopped another long drive and forced a field goal to keep a 24-17 lead. They had to give the ball back, but Cedrick Dort picked off a Garret Rangel pass and the offense was able to run out the clock.

Jim Leonhard remained the interim head coach for Wisconsin, but Luke Fickell was on the sidelines helping the cause. The Badgers played like the Badgers with their physical style, holding on to the ball for close to 38 minutes.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Fun Stats

– Wisconsin outgained Oklahoma State 258 yards to 52. The Badgers averaged 5.5 yards per carry.

– Chase Wolf completed 16-of-26 passes for 116 yards and a score with a pick for Wisconsin, and Garret Rangel completed 14-of-31 passes for 229 yards and two scores with two picks for the Cowboys.

– Wisconsin punter Andy Vujnovich averaged 46.7 yards per punt, put four of his seven kicks inside the 20, and ran for 13 yards and a first down on a fake punt.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl What It All Means

It was a rough year for Wisconsin. It underwhelmed when it needed to rock, it fired its head coach, and it went through an overhaul and a change for the program with a new era for 2023.

But the offense ran well, the defense held up in the end, and after all of that this season, Wisconsin played like Wisconsin. With the win, the program is on a run of 21 straight winning seasons and eight bowl wins in the last nine years.

Oklahoma State didn’t have a whole slew of key players, the season collapsed, and yet it made one great late push to show the fire and fight to almost pull off a second straight massive comeback in a bowl game.

After winning five of its last six bowl games and with an 11-5 post-season record under Mike Gundy, the team did what it could in this and made it close. Even with all of the problems and disappointments this year, it was a 17th straight winning season under Gundy.

Wisconsin vs Oklahoma State Guaranteed Rate Bowl 5 Things To Know

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

– Here’s the big test to see just how much the Wisconsin system works. It was a massively disappointing season with an early loss to Washington State, Paul Chryst being fired after an ugly loss to Illinois, and with losses to Iowa and Minnesota ruining the hope of possibly slipping into the Big Ten Championship in a mediocre West.

Jim Leonhard is still around to be the interim head coach, but it’s Luke Fickell’s show from here on – and he’s already bringing in the talent. Unfortunately for the Badgers, the new guys aren’t there yet, and way too many key players are gone either opting out, hurt, or transferring.

It’s not quite as bad for Oklahoma State, but a season that started out great with at 5-0 – and 6-1 with a strong 43-40 loss to TCU as the only blemish – went south fast. The offense stopped, the team lost four of the last five, and now it comes in limping with opt-outs and transfers hitting the defensive side and QB Spencer Sanders and RB Dominic Richardson taking off through the transfer portal.

Oklahoma State is one of the best bowl teams in the business going 21-11 since beating TCU in the 1944 Cotton. Head coach Mike Gundy has been a massive part of that, leading the way to five wins in the last six, and six of the last eight, including a wild comeback win over Notre Dame in the 2021 Fiesta.

– Wisconsin has been an even better bowl team lately, but that was mostly under Paul Chryst. It dropped the 2020 to Justin Herbert and Oregon in the Rose Bowl, but that’s been the only blip going 7-1 in the last eight including a grinding 20-13 win over Arizona State in last year’s Las Vegas.

The bowl was the Cheez-It, and the Insight, and the Cactus, and the Buffalo Wild Wings, and the Copper. This is the second year as the Guaranteed Rate with the 2020 game canceled and Minnesota running over West Virginia 18-6 last year.

Considering the 10-7 TCU overtime win over Cal in the 2018 version might have been the ugliest sporting event ever – seriously – the 43-42 West Virginia over Arizona State in 2016 was the lone strong game since 2012.

CFN Experts Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Wisconsin Will Win The Guaranteed Rate Bowl

Remembering that the Badgers are without a whole team full of players, they should still be able to blast a bit.

For all of the good things the Oklahoma State defense all year – great on third downs, solid at getting into the backfield – it can be run on. Kansas went off, West Virginia ran for 250 yards, and on the year, the team is 1-5 when allowing 150 rushing yards or more.

As mediocre as Wisconsin has been all year, it ran for 150 yards or more against everyone but Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. When the team got to 175 yards it went 6-1 with the lone loss coming to Ohio State.

Get the big guys up front into a groove, hand it off to anyone who’s back there – hopefully for the Badgers it’s Braelon Allen – and then rely on a defense that’s not going to have too many problems with the struggling Oklahoma State offense.

With all of that said …

Why Oklahoma State Will Win The Guaranteed Rate Bowl

Seriously? You think this Wisconsin team that sputtered and coughed all year is going to suddenly be better after losing a boatload of top veterans and talents?

Yeah, the Badgers will want to get running right away, but it’s not like Oklahoma State – and everyone else in the building – doesn’t know that. At some point there needs to be a completed forward pass, and that’s asking for veteran Chase Wolf to at least be okay.

And no, the Badger defense isn’t going to be its normal self – the loss of Keeanu Benton on the inside is a killer. Even without RB Dominic Richardson around, the Cowboys are going to still be grinding it out with the offensive line a possible plus and because …

How to watch the Wisconsin Badgers against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Tuesday night:

The Wisconsin Badgers play the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Tuesday night, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

There has been alot of change in this Wisconsin program over the last few weeks including the hiring of a new head coach, a flurry of transfers and NFL draft declarations.

It should be interesting to see how the Badgers play against the Cowboys, given they will be without several key players on offense and defense. The Badgers will need to rely on running back Braelon Allen against the Cowboys with two relatively inexperienced quarterbacks under center.

Fortunately for Wisconsin, Oklahoma State has also experienced losses to the transfer portal including their starting quarterback Spencer Sanders and linebacker Mason Cobb.

It should be an exciting bowl game to watch with all of the recent changes in the program, and regardless of the result, there is a lot to look forward to for the Badgers in the coming seasons.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

Best bets for every bowl game, Pt. 2 (pre-New Year’s Six bowls)

Part 2 of our best bets for bowl season.

After a day off, bowl season picks right back up on Monday with the Quick Lane Bowl between New Mexico State and Bowling Green. That means its time for me to pick things up where I left off in Pt. 1 of my best bets for bowl season.

For those who tailed my previous picks, it’s been a good time. I’ve been picking a lot more winners than losers, and I hope to keep the good fortune on my side for 16 more bowl-game picks all the way up until the first NY6 bowl on Friday night.

Before we get into the picks, here’s a look at where things stand:

Latest bowl projections for Oklahoma and the Big 12 from CBS Sports

After week 11 action, who’s going bowling in CBS Sports latest projections for the Big 12. From @john9williams

“Playoffs? Don’t talk about playoffs. You kidding me? I hope we just can win a game.”

One of the great all-time coach rants from former Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Mora feels apt for the Oklahoma Sooners regarding bowl expectations.

After the Sooners won two in a row over Kansas and Iowa State, they moved to one game from bowl eligibility. Since then, they’ve had a two-game losing streak to Baylor and West Virginia that’s clouded the hopes for the rest of the season.

Oklahoma can certainly win each of their final two games. Still, they’ll have to execute far better than they did on Saturday against West Virginia to beat Oklahoma State or Texas Tech n the final two games of the season.

Oklahoma State’s defense is beginning to come on strong and in the same way, Texas Tech’s offense is playing good football of late. While Oklahoma may be favored in both games, the Sooners aren’t a team that can take anyone lightly. So much of what happens over the final two games will come down to execution. If Oklahoma can minimize mistakes or unforced errors like Dillon Gabriel misses and Marvin Mims drops, they should be able to finish the season on a high note.

The operative word being, “should.”

Let’s take a look at CBS Sports latest bowl projections for Oklahoma and the Big 12.

Where the Hawks may be headed: Week 11 Iowa Hawkeyes bowl projection round up

A strong road showing has the Iowa Hawkeyes at 5-4 with three games to go. With one more win needed to go bowling, projections for Iowa.

With the Iowa Hawkeyes sitting at 5-4 after a strong road showing against the Purdue Boilermakers, the postseason is within reach as just one more win is needed to go bowling.

With the slate of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska ahead, the Hawkeyes control their postseason destiny as they can beat any of the aforementioned teams, especially hosting two of them inside Kinnick Stadium.

With the Big Ten West once again wide open with four teams, including the Hawkeyes, tied at second in the conference with a 3-3 Big Ten record, the possibility of the Illinois Fighting Illini slipping up and making this a mess is very much in the realm of possibility.

The Hawkeyes have a bowl game in front of them, a season to salvage, and an outside shot at still taking home the Big Ten West title with a little help. Let’s see where the Hawkeyes are projected to land for a postseason bowl berth.

Week 6 Iowa Hawkeyes bowl projection round up

The Iowa Hawkeyes sit at 3-2 and are projected to go bowling. Here’s an around-the-nation look at bowl projections for Iowa.

Sitting at 3-2 on the season, the Iowa Hawkeyes are looking to string together a few wins to ensure a postseason trip, but in all reality, stay alive in the race for the Big Ten West championship.

In what has felt like doom and gloom from Hawkeyes fans, Iowa is sitting at 1-1 in conference play, the same or better than every single other team in the Big Ten West. After a slower start to the season than some may have liked, the ultimate goals for the Hawkeyes are still in their control.

Iowa also controls what bowl game they could make an appearance in this postseason. Playing in the postseason is what a lot of teams set out to do prior to the season. It is an extra game at a fun location, fans can travel to a unique spot, and it allows one more game before the long offseason.

Going into Week 6, it is time to look at a nationwide bowl projection roundup for the Hawkeyes. There is a feeling that Iowa may be settling into a bowl game in one of the biggest cities in the world.
