LSU coach Jay Johnson not ruling out changes to pitching rotation after series loss at Auburn

With inconsistency behind Paul Skenes in the rotation, Johnson said changes could potentially be made.

LSU has been nearly unbeatable in series openers this season, and there’s one simple reason for that: [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag].

Skenes has been the most dominant pitcher in college baseball this season. He’s one of the top prospects in the country alongside [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], and both could be the first two players off the board in this summer’s MLB draft.

But beyond Skenes, the Tigers have had some troubles on the mound. Pitching inconsistency in Games 2 and 3 have cost this team recently, most notably this past weekend.

LSU dropped its first series of the season on the road against a red-hot Auburn team. After Skenes tossed a 3-0 shutout in Game 1 on Friday night, the Tigers were defeated 8-6 in Game 2 and were embarrassed in a series-clinching 12-2 run-rule loss on Sunday.

The starting pitching situation outside of Skenes is becoming a concern as the Tigers gear up for a potential College World Series run. After the loss to Auburn, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said changes to the rotation were a possibility moving forward, according to The Advocate’s Leah Vann.

Ty Floyd has held down the Saturday job for most of the year, while Vanderbilt transfer [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] has been the Sunday starter of late. However, UCLA transfer [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] held that title before struggles relegated him to the bullpen.

If LSU wanted to bring in a different weekend starter, Hurd is an option. Other options include [autotag]Javen Coleman[/autotag], who recently returned from injury, and other bullpen arms such as [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag], [autotag]Sam Dutton[/autotag], [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] or [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag].

Unfortunately, the top bullpen arm in [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag], who many thought could develop into a starting option, was lost for the season last month after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Exactly how Johnson will address the pitching rotation (or if he will at all) remains to be seen. But with only two SEC series remaining, LSU only has so much time to experiment with things before the games really start to count.

LSU drops first SEC series of the season as Auburn dominates Game 3

For the first time all season, LSU has lost a conference series with Sunday’s run-rule loss.

For the first time all season, LSU has lost a conference series.

Auburn has now taken down No. 2 South Carolina and No. 1 LSU in back-to-back weeks after earning a dominating 12-2 run-rule win in Sunday’s decisive Game 3.

The game started off the way LSU wanted it to. [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit a solo shot on the third pitch of the ballgame to give LSU a 1-0 lead.

That nice start became a nightmare in the bottom of the first inning as [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] gave up four walks and an RBI single in the first five batters he faced before he was replaced by [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag]. Herring walked the first two batters he faced before giving up a two-RBI single to give Auburn a 6-1 lead after one inning.

[autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] got LSU out of a jam in the first inning and he would stay in to pitch the second. Auburn hit an RBI single off of him to increase its lead to 7-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Auburn scored two more runs thanks to a two-RBI triple to increase its lead to 9-1.

LSU finally scored again in the top of the fifth inning when Dugas scored on a [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] single to cut the lead to 9-2. Auburn answered in the bottom of the sixth with another two-RBI triple to make it 11-2 Auburn.

Auburn walked it off with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game 12-2.

With the loss, LSU drops to 37-10 and 16-7 in conference play. The next game will be Tuesday evening at 6:30 CT against Northwestern State.

Pair of homers lead LSU baseball to Game 1 win over Alabama

The Tigers bounced back from a midweek loss with a series-opening win on Friday.

The Tigers looked to bounce back after another midweek loss as they welcome the Alabama Crimson Tide into Alex Box Stadium this weekend, and they did just that with an 8-6 win to take Game 1.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] got the start on the mound, but that wasn’t the best news LSU had heard all week, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] being healthy enough to play were the best news anyone has heard.

Speaking of White, he got the scoring started off with a bang as he hit a “Tommy Tank” to right field to put the Tigers up 1-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] joined the homerun party as he hit a “Crews Missile” to right field to increase the LSU lead to 4-0 after three innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, Alabama got on the board with a solo homer to cut the lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU loaded the bases before [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] was hit by a pitch to increase the lead to 5-1. Morgan and Crews were both walked to make it 7-1 Tigers after six innings.

Skenes’ night was finished after six innings. His final line was 6.0 innings pitched as he gave up one run on five hits and nine strikeouts. [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] was brought into the game in relief.

In the bottom of the seventh, LSU extended their lead to 8-1 on a sacrifice groundout. Alabama trimmed the LSU lead to 8-2 after an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning. Herring stayed in to pitch the ninth inning but Alabama chased him from the mound after the Tide cut the lead to 8-5 and the tying run came up to the plate. [autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] entered the game to try and get the final out. Collins was greeted with an RBI single to cut the lead to 8-6. He then struck out the next hitter to secure the win.

With the win, LSU moves to 33-8 overall and 13-5 in conference play. LSU will take on Alabama in Game 2 Saturday night at 6 p.m. CT.

Tigers take Game 1 in Oxford against Ole Miss

LSU bounced back from a midweek loss on Friday night.

The series between No. 1 LSU and the Ole Miss Rebels got underway on Friday night in Oxford with the Tigers looking to bounce back after a midweek loss. They did just that, starting the series off with a 7-3 win.

In the top of the first inning, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] picked up where he left off last week as he reached on an error to score [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] from third and give LSU a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead through three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ole Miss took the lead on a three-run homer by [autotag]Will Furniss[/autotag], whose dad, [autotag]Eddy Furniss[/autotag], is one of the greatest LSU Tigers of all time. Ole Miss held a 4-3 lead heading into the fifth inning. Tommy Tanks stepped into the batter’s box with the bases loaded and one out and he did what he does best, hit bombs. White hit a grand slam to center field to give LSU a 6-3 lead in the fifth inning.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag]’ night ended after six innings. His final line, six innings pitched, four hits, three runs, 11 strikeouts, and three walks. His only real blemish was the three-run bomb in the fourth. [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] came in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning and retired the side 1-2-3.

In the top of the eighth inning, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] scored on an [autotag]Alex Milazzo [/autotag]RBI single to increase the lead to 7-3. Herring stayed in for the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to close out the game.

With the win, LSU moves to 30-7 overall and 10-5 in conference play. Game 2 will be Saturday at 2 p.m. CT as LSU looks to win another conference series.

LSU loses Garrett Edwards but evens series against South Carolina with comeback win in Game 2

When LSU needed a clutch hit the most, Gavin Dugas came through with a grand slam to help lead the Tigers to an 8-7 win over the Gamecocks.

When LSU needed a clutch hit the most, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] came through with a grand slam to boost the Tigers to an 8-7 win over South Carolina.

The Gamecocks have been unstoppable at home this season, entering Friday’s game with a 19-0 record in Columbia. [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] was tasked with trying to break that streak in Game 1 of the scheduled doubleheader.

After a quiet first inning, the Gamecocks scored four runs in the bottom of the second when Floyd hit back-to-back batters with the bases loaded and then gave up a two-RBI double.

In the top of the fourth inning, LSU hit a pair of homers to trim the lead to 4-3. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit a solo shot and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit a two-run shot to left field. For once, LSU had hope.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] exited the game after an injury, and the Gamecocks were able to get all three of the runs back. [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] stopped the bleeding, but the Tigers found themselves down, 7-3, after five innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, LSU loaded the bases after [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and Thompson walked. [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] then singled to load the bases. Down 7-3 and running out of time to make a comeback, LSU had a chance to tie the game with one swing.

Insert [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], a man who always seems to find himself in these situations and usually produces.

He did just that. Dugas hit a grand slam to tie the game at 7 heading to the bottom of the eighth.

In the top of the ninth inning, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] led off with a walk. White then grounded out to the pitcher but that got Crews to second. After a wild pitch got him to third, Crews scored on a Beloso RBI single to give LSU its first lead of the weekend heading to the bottom of the ninth.

[autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] remained in the game to pitch the ninth inning for LSU. The Gamecocks put runners on first and second, but Guidry struck out the other three batters he faced to secure the 8-7 victory.

Tigers take series over Tennessee with Game 2 win

LSU baseball will go for the sweep on Saturday.

LSU took down Tennessee 6-4 in Game 2 to take the series against the No. 10 team in the country.

Game 2 in Baton Rouge started with hot bats on both sides. The Tennessee Vols scored a run on a solo homer to give them a 1-0 lead before the Tigers scored three of their own in the bottom of the inning. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag], and [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit RBI doubles to give LSU a 3-1 lead after the first inning.

Tennessee scored another run in the top of the second with another solo homer to cut the lead to 3-2. In the top of the fourth, the Vols took the lead with a two-run homer to give them a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, LSU took the lead back due to [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] and [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] both hitting solo homers to give LSU a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers got an insurance run when White hit a sacrifice fly to score Dugas and give LSU a 6-4 lead.

[autotag]Chase Shores[/autotag] and [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] followed a good start by Floyd to close out Game 2 and win the series over No. 10 Tennessee at Alex Box Stadium. Game 3 will be Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball takes series over Arkansas with pair of doubleheader wins

Mel McDaniel would’ve been proud of this Louisiana Saturday Night as LSU beat Arkansas 14-5 to take the series!

Mel McDaniel would’ve been proud of this Louisiana Saturday Night as LSU beat Arkansas 14-5 in Game 3 in the second leg of a doubleheader to take the weekend series

Game 3 started out just like Game 2. Arkansas scored two runs in the top of the first inning. This time, they scored both of their runs on bases-loaded walks by [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag].

LSU answered in the bottom of the first when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit a two-run Crews Missile to center field to tie the game.

Arkansas scored again in the top of the third inning when Cali hit a two-RBI double to give the Razorbacks a 4-2 lead. Once again, LSU answered in the bottom of that inning as [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored on a Crews RBI single, and Crews scored on a [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.

LSU got its first lead of the ball game in the bottom of the fourth inning when [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit a triple and then scored on a fielding error by Arkansas. That error resulted in [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] getting on first base. He was quickly brought home when Dugas hit a two-run bomb to left field to give LSU a 7-4 lead.

After a [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] walk and an error that allowed Crews to reach first base, Tommy Tanks hit a three-run bomb to center to give LSU a 10-4 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Arkansas scored a run on a fielder’s choice with bases loaded to cut the lead to 10-5. LSU got that run back in the bottom of the sixth when Tommy Tanks hit a grand slam to right field to make it 14-5.

[autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] and [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] were the unsung heroes on the mound tonight for the Tigers as they LSU through six tough innings. Herring have up a run on two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Edwards gave up zero runs on two hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.

[autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] pitched the ninth inning for LSU as he slammed the door on the Razorbacks and secured the 14-5 victory.

LSU’s next game will be Tuesday as it welcomes Grambling State to Baton Rouge. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. The Tigers will then welcome Tennessee into town for a great weekend matchup.

LSU increases winning streak to five with Sunday shutout against Central Connecticut State

The LSU Tigers run-ruled the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils for the second day in a row with a 13-0 win on Sunday.

The LSU Tigers run-ruled the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils for the second day in a row with a 13-0 win on Sunday.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with a two-RBI double down the left-field line to score [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag]. [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] followed that with an RBI double on his own to score Crews and advance [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] to third.

The final run of the inning was scored on a [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] groundout to give LSU a 4-0 lead after one inning.

[autotag]Chase Shores[/autotag] got the start on the mound and had a good day. His final line was 3.2 innings pitched allowing three hits on four strikeouts and two walks. [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag] and [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] followed him on the mound.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers extended the lead as they tacked on four more runs. Dugas hit an RBI double, Morgan hit an RBI single, and Morgan and Dugas scored due to a couple of errors by the Blue Devils.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] continued his hot start to the season as he hit a two-run bomb to right field to make it 10-0. White followed that with an RBI single, Thompson hit an RBI single and [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] scored on a Jobert groundout to make it 13-0 after six innings.

With the win, LSU now holds a 10-1 record. The next game will be against the Butler Bulldogs on Monday night to close out the four-game weekend slate. The first pitch for that one is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=611345007]

LSU baseball opens the weekend on a high note with decisive win over Butler

The Tigers began their four-game weekend with a 12-2 win over the Bulldogs.

After escaping Austin, Texas, with a 3-0 win over the Longhorns, the LSU Tigers looked to get back in the swing of things on offense against Butler to start the weekend. The Tigers did just that with a 12-2 win over the Bulldogs on Friday.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] got the start for the Tigers and showed that he is in a league of his own. He pitched 6 innings allowing just one hit with 13 strikeouts and no walks.

The LSU offense started off very slow, but that is to be expected when you are used to pitchers throwing almost 100 mph and you face a guy that tops out in the high 80s.

In the bottom of the third inning, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] got the Tigers on the board with an RBI double to right field to score [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] and make it 1-0 LSU after three innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, the floodgates opened as LSU plated six runs thanks to a 3-run Crews missile to right field, White scoring on a throwing error, and [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] and [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] scoring on an [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] bunt single. That made the score 7-0 after five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU plated two more runs due to a fielding error and a Pearson flyout to right. [autotag]Micah Bucknam[/autotag] came in to pitch for Skenes and struck out one of the two batters he faced before he was pulled for [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag]. Herring retired the last batter of the inning in one pitch to maintain the 9-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag] hit an RBI single to center field to score [autotag]Mic Paul[/autotag]. [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] followed that with a 2-RBI double to right field to make it 12-0 Tigers.

[autotag]Aiden Moffett[/autotag] got his first action of the year in the top of the eighth inning and he struggled with location as he walked three and allowed one run before [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] came in to get the final out of the eighth inning as LSU held a 12-1 lead.

Guidry stayed in to pitch the ninth inning. He struck out three straight batters but the last hitter reached as Travinski lost the ball. Butler then scored on an RBI double and [autotag]Sam Dutton[/autotag] came in for Guidry. Dutton retired the first batter he faced and LSU won 12-2.

LSU has a long weekend of games ahead of them as they face Central Connecticut State on Saturday and Sunday before playing Butler again on Monday.

Thatcher Hurd struggles but Tre Morgan hits for the cycle in run-rule win over Southern

The Tigers overcame an early 4-0 deficit with 18 consecutive runs.

Despite falling behind early in the game, the Tigers managed to bounce back in a big way against Southern on Tuesday night thanks to a monster game from Tre Morgan. He hit for the cycle in order and totaled eight RBI in an 18-4 win as the game ended after seven innings thanks to the run rule.

UCLA transfer [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] got his first start on the mound in an LSU uniform, and it did not go as planned. Going into the season, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said that Hurd had some work to do because he was struggling with accuracy. That showed big time against the Southern Jaguars.

Hurd only lasted two full innings before being pulled after giving up four runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts. That rough start had the Tigers down 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. That’s when the LSU bats showed up big time.

After [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was hit by a pitch and [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] was walked, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI double to right field to score Crews and cut the lead to 4-1.

Morgan then hit Dugas with the “Anything you can, do I can do better,” as he hit a two-RBI double to left field to cut the lead to 4-3. Then, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-run shot to left to give the Tigers their first lead of the ball game.

[autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] came in to pitch for Hurd in the third inning and he continued on the mound until the middle of the 6th inning. Little was given the job of stopping the early bleeding and he did his job very well.

He finished the game going 3.2 innings, and he only allowed one hit with six strikeouts and one walk.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, after [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] was hit by a pitch and Crews walked, Jobert finally got a good swing on a pitch as he hit a three-run shot to left field to make it 8-4 Tigers after four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, LSU put up five more runs as [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch, Morgan hit a three-RBI triple to left field to score Dugas, Jobert and Crews, and Jones hit an RBI single up the middle to score Morgan to make it 13-4 after five innings.

Freshman [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] made his first appearance of the season as he came in to get the final out of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Thompson scored on a groundout by [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag]. [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] followed that with an RBI single to left field to score Stevenson and make it 15-4 before Morgan hit a three-run bomb to make it 18-4.

With that homer, Morgan completed the cycle. He hit a single, double, triple, and a homer in that order. Morgan’s cycle was the first cycle for LSU since Mikie Mahtook in 2010 against Alcorn State.

Morgan finished the game 4-for-5 with eight RBI.

Herring stayed in to pitch the seventh inning as he tried to end the game in a run rule. The first batter he faced roped a double to the left field line and he was removed from the mound after that as [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] came in to pitch for the Tigers. Edwards got three outs in a row without allowing a run to close things out.

LSU will be back in action this weekend in the Round Rock Classic as the Tigers take on Kansas State on Friday at 2 p.m. CT.
