Studs and duds from Vikings 22-17 upset vs. 49ers

From Kirk Cousins to Camryn Bynum and Alexander Mattison, here are the studs and duds from Monday night’s upset victory

The Minnesota Vikings found a way to save their season by upsetting the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 22-17.

The Vikings came out of the gate poorly by throwing an interception on the third play of the game. Thankfully, they forced a Christian McCaffrey fumble just five plays later and scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive.

Throughout the game, the Vikings never felt like they left the drivers seat. The defense was pressuring Brock Purdy consistently and not allowing him enough time to drive the ball down the field on the in-breaking routes and crossers that Kyle Shanahan likes to throw.

The game itself provided many standout performances and we highlight them in this weeks studs and duds.

1 days until Vikings season opener: Every player to wear No. 1

7 players have worn the No. 1 for the Minnesota Vikings, including QB Warren Moon.

The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2023 regular season in 1 day at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10.

From now until then, we will take a trip down memory lane and count each day by revisiting the players who have worn that specific jersey number.

Kicker Greg Joseph is currently wearing the No. 1 for the Minnesota Vikings.

With 1 day until kickoff, here’s a look at every player to wear No. 1 in a regular season game with the Vikings (via Pro Football Reference):

Matt Daniels says it’s a “kicking competition” between Joseph and Podlesny

Despite being a solid kicker for the Vikings, it appears that Greg Joseph will still have to earn his starting spot.

When the Minnesota Vikings opened training camp, it seemed unlikely they would move away from Greg Joseph as their starting kicker.

Over two seasons with the Vikings, Joseph has developed into a reliable leg nearly automatic within 50 yards. Despite struggling past 50 yards last season (Joseph missed six kicks from this range), it seemed like the Vikings were well-positioned in the three specialist areas.

However, if special teams coordinator Mike Daniels’s comments are any indication, the Vikings have opened up a kicking competition. According to Sam Ekstrom of Locked On Minnesota, Daniels said it is a “kicking competition” between Joseph and undrafted rookie Jack Podlesny.

Podlesny was a standout kicker at the University of Georgia and quickly bloomed into one of the country’s most reliable legs. Over three seasons, Podlesny made around 80% of his field goals, including a career-high 83% last season.

With training camp still in its infancy, it’s possible that Daniels is just trying to keep Joseph motivated. However, it is something to watch as we head towards preseason.

Madden ratings for every Vikings specialist

Madden rankings for the Minnesota Vikings specialists are fine, but not great.

On Monday, the first batch of Madden 24 rankings and the first 99 overall in this year’s game were released.

They are currently releasing two position groups per day and started with wide receivers and safeties. On Tuesday, they released edge rushers and defensive tackles. On Wednesday, they ranked the offensive lineman and the running backs. On Thursday, they started with the tight end and cornerback rankings. On Friday, they started with the quarterbacks and inside linebackers. We finish things off with the specialists.

Grading the Vikings free agency moves after the first week

The Minnesota Vikings have made multiple signings since the beginning of free agency. @TheRealForno graded each signing the Vikings made.

We are eight days into the free agency period and the Minnesota Vikings have been plenty busy in both acquiring and retaining talent.

Despite entering the offseason nearly $24 million over the salary cap, the Vikings made multiple moves by releasing stalwart players like Adam Thielen and Eric Kendricks. The corresponding moves that they made will help determine where the Vikings go moving forward.

After the first eight days, the Vikings have made multiple moves. Here is how I have graded each of those moves.

Vikings agree to terms with kicker Greg Joseph on one-year deal

The Vikings elected to re-sign kicker Greg Joseph to a one-year deal on Tuesday

The Minnesota Vikings re-signed kicker Greg Joseph to a one-year $2 million contract that will keep him in purple and gold through the end of the 2023 season. More than $1.5 million of his new contract is fully guaranteed, and with incentives, he can make up to $2.5 million next season.

Joseph initially signed with the team in 2021, and had a fantastic first season with the Vikings, nailing 33 of his 38 three-point attempts and 36 of 40 extra points, but he took a noticeable step back last year. His future with the team remained uncertain until news of his latest contract broke on Tuesday night.

Converting on less than 80 percent of his three-point attempts in 2022, he only managed to hit four field goals of 50 or more yards in 10 total attempts and missed six point after tries.

Despite the considerable dropoff, it seems that Minnesota saw considerable value in keeping continuity in its special teams unit. Though several recognizable names at the position hit the market when free agency opened on Monday, the only kicker to change teams thus far has been former Los Angeles Ram Matt Gay, who signed a massive four-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

Joseph is a known commodity for the Vikings, and his position is likely secure for the 2023 season with this signing, which is almost entirely guaranteed.

National media narratives about the Vikings are getting ridiculous

No, the Vikings didn’t win only because of a 61-yard field goal

Did you know that nearly everyone in the national media thinks that the Minnesota Vikings are fraudulent? It’s only been a part of nearly every conversation about the Vikings since the middle of the season.

They are continuing as we go into the wild-card round, but a new one has entered the fold: The Vikings beat the New York Giants in Week 16 only because of a 61-yard field goal. Not wide receiver Justin Jefferson and tight end T.J. Hockenson dominating the Giants secondary, only the 61-yard field goal.

Yes, that is the new narrative about the Vikings. They can’t get credit for kicker Greg Joseph setting a franchise record for longest field goal at the end of regulation. Max Kellerman even went as far as to say the Giants have a better quarterback in Daniel Jones:

The national media will continue to do anything they can to discredit the Vikings, but if you are going to do that, at least come at the argument with context. Don’t just say they are lucky or have a negative point differential so we will take the Giants. What they forget to mention is that the Giants do as well, but that doesn’t fit their narrative.

The national media is treating the Vikings unfairly, and that’s just another piece of motivation.

Vikings fans called out by Giants “I thought it would be a lot louder”

The Giants gave the Vikings some bulletin board material

The league announced that the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants will face off Sunday in this weekend’s NFL Wild Card at 3:30 PM central time. These two teams played on Christmas Eve, where kicker Greg Joseph booted a Vikings-record 61-yard field goal as time expired to give the Vikings a 27-24 victory over the Giants.

That win was nice at the time, but the regular season is over. Every team has a clean slate and it’s win or go home. The Giants made that crystal clear when offensive lineman Nick Gates started trash-talking. It wasn’t directed at the team but rather at the fans. This was Gates’ first game at U.S. Bank Stadium and he stated that he came away unimpressed with Vikings fans and how loud they were.

“Surprised. Actually, I thought it would be a lot louder. I thought especially when our offense is out there they would be a lot louder out there. But you know, they’re Midwest people. They’re too nice. I can say it because I went to Nebraska. I went to Nebraska. I include myself in that one.”

It’s very brave of Gates to come out publicly in the first weekend of playoff football and call out the opposing teams’ fans, especially when you have to travel to that stadium again this weekend. Vikings fans have been called out.

If you’re headed to the game this weekend, be sure the rest up those vocal cords. Regardless of if Gates was trying to downplay how loud it actually was at U.S. Bank stadium, it’s a perfect opportunity for fans to let him know just how loud we can get.
