How does Greg Joseph’s career as a kicker compare to Anders Carlson’s rookie season?

The Packers are signing Greg Joseph, a veteran, to compete with Anders Carlson at kicker. How does Joseph’s five-year career compare to Carlson’s rookie season?

According to his agent, the Green Bay Packers are adding Greg Joseph to their kicker room ahead of the 2024 season.

At this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, general manager Brian Gutekunst discussed bringing in a veteran kicker to compete against 2023 sixth-round draft pick Anders Carlson. Joseph, 29, has five years of NFL kicking experience, spending the last three as a member of the Minnesota Vikings.

“I’m excited to see what (Carlson) does in Year 2, but there will be competition in the room,” Gutekunst said.

Carlson went through what can only be described as an erratic season for a rookie kicker. He struggled to make field goals consistently throughout training camp and the preseason but then made his first seven attempts during the regular season. Carlson ended up making 81.8 percent of his field goals in 2023 but missed a league-high six extra points and went on to miss a 41-yarder that would have given the Packers a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Divisional Round.

Joseph, meanwhile, has also had his struggles.

Let’s take a look to see how Joseph’s career kicking stats compare to Carlson’s rookie campaign:

On field goals of less than 30 yards, Joseph has made all 29 of his attempts. Carlson is also perfect with six makes.

On field goals ranging between 30-39 yards, Joseph is 32-33 (97.0 percent). Carlson is 14-14 (100 percent).

On field goals ranging between 40-49 yards, Joseph is 22-30 (73.3 percent). Carlson is 4-8 (50 percent).

On field goals from 50 yards and over, Joseph is 16-28 (57.1 percent) with a career-long of 61. Carlson is 3-5 (60.0 percent) with a long of 53.

On extra points, Joseph is 146-162 (90.1 percent). Carlson is 34-39 (87.1 percent).

Both kickers are known for their strong legs but struggle with accuracy as the distance increases. Last season, they each were 7-of-13 on kicks of at least 40 yards. Joseph played on a one-year deal for Minnesota but was not re-signed after finishing 24-for-30 (80.0 percent) with two missed extra points.

Of course, all kickers are judged by their performance in big moments. Joseph’s agent wrote that he holds the NFL record for game-winners in a season (5). Carlson has one career game-winner, a 32-yarder against the Carolina Panthers in Week 16.

It will be interesting to see how the Packers’ kicker competition shakes out. Green Bay had high hopes for Carlson’s potential when they drafted him, but it was evident at the end of the year that he had to be more consistent. No one knows if Joseph will be any better.

Jack Podlesny, who was signed by the team in January, is also expected to compete for the job.

Packers signing veteran kicker Greg Joseph to compete with Anders Carlson

The Packers are signing veteran kicker Greg Joseph, who spent the last three seasons as the Vikings kicker.

The Green Bay Packers are adding a veteran kicker to the competition with Anders Carlson. According to NFL agent Brett Tessler, the Packers will sign former Minnesota Vikings kicker Greg Joseph.

Joseph, who has kicked in the NFL since 2018, spent the last three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. His career field goal percentage is 82.6.

The Packers sought out veteran competition for Carlson, who went through ups and downs as a rookie kicker in Green Bay last season.

Over his career, Joseph is 38-of-58 on kicks over 40 yards, or 65.5 percent, with 15 makes of 50 or more yards. He’s also connected on only 90 percent of his extra points.

Both Joseph and Carlson were 7-of-13 on kicks of at least 40 yards last season. Carlson also missed a kick over 40 yards in the postseason — a killer miss late in the Packers’ divisional round loss to the 49ers.

Carlson actually had a higher field goal percentage (81.8) than Joseph (80.0) last season.

Earlier this offseason, the Packers signed kicker Jack Podlesny. It’s unclear if Podlesny will remain on the roster and compete with Carlson and Joseph, or if the Packers will move forward with just Carlson and Joseph in the competition.

4 players Minnesota Vikings should let walk in free agency

The Minnesota Vikings are set to have 28 free agents this period. Our staff highlighted four players that shouldn’t return to Minnesota.

The Minnesota Vikings are going into a very crucial offseason under general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Not only is the starting quarterback in major flux with Kirk Cousins set to be a free agent, but outside linebacker Danielle Hunter is also set to hit the market along with wide receiver Justin Jefferson and left tackle Christian Darisaw set to receive extensions.

What should the Vikings end up doing in free agency? There are a lot of different options and we are set to explore them all.

First up, our staff took a look at four players the Vikings should let walk.

Players Vikings should re-sign.

Vikings, Raiders very nearly make recent pro football history with 3-0 final score

The Vikings and Raiders nearly set a modern pro football record for scoring futility, but Minnesota kicker Greg Joseph broke the spell.

Nobody wanted Minnesota Vikings kicker Greg Joseph to make his 36-yard field goal with 1:57 left in the Vikings’ game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Because if Joseph had missed, and nobody scored after that, we would have had the first 0-0 tie in a professional football game since November 7, 1943 in a game between the New York Giants and the Detroit Lions.

As it stood, the Vikings and Raiders kept the scoreboard clean just about as long as two NFL teams have done in the Super Bowl era. Per our friends at Quirky Research, only the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphins came closer to that beautiful 0-0 score.

That game happened on November 7, 2007, and it was a game played in a weather disaster — Heinz Field was described as a “quagmire.” The Dolphins were trying to break an 0-10 record, but kicker Jeff Reed kicked a 24-yard field goal with 17 seconds left, and that was that. Five different high school and college games had been played on that field in the week leading up to the game, and the attempt to re-sod the field — combined with a lightning delay — led to a complete mess.

“Those conditions, whew, they were horrendous,” Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said after daylong rain and new sod created awful playing conditions. “The footing was bad, all of a sudden you’d hit a water puddle and sink down. Some of defensive backs were scared about falling down and giving up a big play.”

The Vikings and Raiders had no such excuses, as their game was played in the relative comfort of Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.

Greg Joseph field goal in last 2 minutes gives Vikings 3-0 win over Raiders

After 58 scoreless minutes, Greg Joseph kicked a field goal and the Vikings had a win.

Was it the Minnesota Vikings at Las Vegas Raiders or the Minnesota Golden Gophers against Iowa?

The Vikings and Raiders played a Week 14 game that could easily have been confused with a Hawkeyes game in 2023.

There was no scoring until Greg Joseph kicked a 36-yard field goal with 1:57 lefty at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.

How bad was it?

The teams accounted for 17 punts with 7 inside the 20. The final one was Joesph’s 14-yarder in the last 18 seconds rather than trying for a second field goal.

Curtis Bolton returned it 17 yards so the Vikings actually lost yardage on the pooch punt.

A.J. Cole of the Raiders had a long of 83 yards; Ryan Wright’s best effort was 59.

Combined there were 830 yards of punts.

There were nine sacks in the game, five by the Raiders.

Ivan Pace had 13 tackles and his interception of Aidan O’Connell after the field goal sealed the Vikings’ win.

Vikings injury report: Mattison improves, Dobbs remains

Thursday’s injury report showed improvement

The Minnesota Vikings released their injury report for Thursday and it showed a little bit of improvement.

  • CB Akayleb Evans (calf): Did not practice
  • RB Alexander Mattison: (concussion): Limited
  • ILB Brian Asamoah (ankle): Limited
  • TE T.J. Hockenson (ribs): Limited
  • QB Nick Mullens (back): Limited
  • QB Josh Dobbs (ankle): Full
  • QB Jaren Hall (concussion): Full
  • DE Dean Lowry (groin): Full
  • WR K.J. Osborn (concussion): Full
  • G Chris Reed (foot): Full

There were three changes from yesterday’s report. Greg Joseph was removed after missing practice on Wednesday due to a personal matter. Hall improved to a full participant and Mattison improved to a limited participant. Both players are hoping to be removed from concussion protocol before Sunday’s game.

The biggest concern is Evans still not practicing with his calf injury. If he is unable to go, we would be seeing a substantial amount of both Andrew Booth Jr. and Mekhi Blackmon. We also would likely see Joejuan Williams get elevated from the practice squad.

Friday’s injury report will hopefully have more clarity and less names.

Vikings initial Week 11 injury report includes Josh Dobbs

The initial injury report includes quarterback Josh Dobbs

The Minnesota Vikings have released their initial injury report for Sunday night’s game against the Denver Broncos and it’s relatively deep. The Vikings did not practice on Wednesday but held a walkthrough.

  • CB Akayleb Evans (calf): Did not practice
  • K Greg Joseph (not injury related-personal matter): Did not practice
  • RB Alexander Mattison: (concussion): Did not practice
  • ILB Brian Asamoah (ankle): Limited
  • QB Jaren Hall (concussion): Limited
  • TE T.J. Hockenson (ribs): Limited
  • QB Nick Mullens (back): Limited
  • QB Josh Dobbs (ankle): Full
  • DE Dean Lowry (groin): Full
  • WR K.J. Osborn (concussion): Full
  • G Chris Reed (foot): Full

The biggest additions to the list are Evans, Mattison and Dobbs. Evans suffered his injury on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The team has some hope that Mattison will play on Sunday despite not participating in the walkthrough. Dobbs’ ankle is a new injury that wasn’t reported before.

Lowry did see improvement from last week being listed as a full participant. He looks to be on track to play against the Broncos. Asamoah still hasn’t improved from last week. His injury paired with Hicks being hurt explains the Anthony Barr signing.

Thursday’s injury report will tell us more about who will play on Sunday.

Stock up, stock down in Vikings Week 8 win vs. Packers

There are plenty of stocks rising and falling in the Vikings 24-10 win against the Green Bay Packers

The Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers 24-10 to improve to 4-4 on the year. On the surface, this is exactly what the Vikings needed: a divisional win that puts Minnesota firmly in the playoff hunt.

But grim circumstances surrounding the conclusion of the contest make it tough to show much optimism for the rest of the 2023 season.

Even so, the game had plenty of stocks rise in a commanding win and a few that fell for varying circumstances.

Studs and duds from Vikings 22-17 upset vs. 49ers

From Kirk Cousins to Camryn Bynum and Alexander Mattison, here are the studs and duds from Monday night’s upset victory

The Minnesota Vikings found a way to save their season by upsetting the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 22-17.

The Vikings came out of the gate poorly by throwing an interception on the third play of the game. Thankfully, they forced a Christian McCaffrey fumble just five plays later and scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive.

Throughout the game, the Vikings never felt like they left the drivers seat. The defense was pressuring Brock Purdy consistently and not allowing him enough time to drive the ball down the field on the in-breaking routes and crossers that Kyle Shanahan likes to throw.

The game itself provided many standout performances and we highlight them in this weeks studs and duds.
