Wisconsin goes ice cold from deep, gets overpowered by Illinois 75-60

Fresh off a bounce-back victory against Penn State that saw a dominant second half performance, a different Wisconsin Badger team showed

Fresh off a bounce-back victory against Penn State that saw a dominant second-half performance by the Wisconsin Badgers, a different Badger team showed up in Champaign, Illinois today. That team went 4 for 24 from three, lost the rebounding battle by 26, couldn’t contain Kofi Cockburn inside and fell handily to Illinois 75-60.

It’s been an up-and-down season in many respects for Greg Gard’s team, the “down” being on full display today as the defense had no answer for the Fighting Illini, the big men got dominated inside and some of the Badgers’ key offensive pieces couldn’t hit a shot all game.

One of the bright spots for Wisconsin was the play of D’Mitrik Trice, as his 22 points on 50 percent shooting represented most of what the Badgers were able to muster offensively.

But the offensive woes weren’t even the story, as a team that prides itself on defense was unable to get stops all game, couldn’t rebound their opponent’s misses and weren’t ever able to overcome their early deficit as a result.

It’s hard to win any basketball game when you shoot 4/24 from deep, lose the rebounding battle 46 to 20 and struggle to stay in front of guards at the top of the key. But against a team with the talent of Illinois? That task becomes nearly impossible.

The sky isn’t falling quite yet in Madison with several critical matchups still left on the schedule, though the team’s 8-5 Big Ten record is starting to put a second straight regular-season crown out of reach.

And if you take a glance at the Badgers’ upcoming schedule, there’s a good chance wins will only get harder and harder to come by as the regular season comes to a close.

The Badgers will return to the court on February 11 when they visit the 4-8 Nebraska Cornhuskers.

After getting upset in the first game of their back-to-back series, the No. 19 Wisconsin Badgers will look for redemption against the Penn State Nittany Lions at the Kohl Center on Tuesday night.

Three of the Wisconsin starting five shot an abysmal combined 29.6% from the field in their last game against the Nittany Lions, and two of those three were Wisconsin’s leading scorers this season in Micah Potter and D’Mitrik Trice. Head coach Greg Gard will need to see improvements from them for the Badgers to have a chance against Penn State, who continues to get better every game.

Penn State has continued to build momentum after their close loss to No. 7 Ohio State and convincing victory against Wisconsin last week, and the Badgers will need to play drastically better at the Kohl Center to avoid getting swept by the Nittany Lions in the season series.

BTN color analyst thinks Jonathan Davis “has the ability to be the best player in the Big Ten”

One of the stories of the Wisconsin Badgers’ 2020-21 basketball season thus far has been the emergence of freshman Jonathan Davis

One of the stories of the Wisconsin Badgers’ 2020-21 basketball season thus far has been the emergence of freshman Jonathan Davis.

On a senior-heavy team that seldomly relies on its freshmen for meaningful minutes, Davis has taken no time to become a meaningful contributor off the bench and show his sky-high potential.

Through 17 games now, the freshman plays 24.1 minutes-per-game and averages 6.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 40.7 percent shooting, though anybody who watches him play knows there is something special there even if the numbers don’t show it yet.

On the broadcast of Wisconsin’s victory over Maryland last night, Big Ten Network color analyst Stephen Bardo went as far as to say that Davis “has the ability to be the best player in the Big Ten at some point.”

For a program that hasn’t had a Big Ten Player of the Year since Frank Kaminsky in 2014-15 and only three total since 2000, this praise from Bardo is significant to note.

If you ask Badger fans who have watched Davis play this season what they think of the comment, I think many would agree.

Watch what Wisconsin basketball head coach Greg Gard said about Ohio State after the game

Ohio State went to Wisconsin and sprung a mild upset. Badgers coach Greg Gard had some good things to say about the Buckeyes after the game.

The Ohio State basketball team went to Madison and took down the No. 10 ranked Wisconsin Badgers 74-62. It was a big bounce-back win after a game the Buckeyes lost by two against Purdue. One that felt a lot like it should have been in the win column.

You don’t have to look too far to understand what a huge win this was. Wisconsin had only lost one game at home coming into the contest and had a shot at grabbing sole possession of second place in the Big Ten.

Instead, Ohio State took care of business and kept itself among the upper division of the Big Ten and within arms reach of Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Illinois in a battle for second place.

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard met with the media after the game to discuss what he saw from his team and the Buckeyes. He was quick to give OSU credit. If you missed any of his comments, we have them here for you thanks to the YouTube Channel of 247Sports Evan Flood.

Watch Gard discuss how difficult it is to guard Ohio State, how the Buckeyes got off to a quick start, Seth Towns, and more.

Wisconsin sits as the No. 3 Big Ten team in the current KenPom ratings

As things stand today before No. 10 Wisconsin takes on No. 15 Ohio State, the Badgers sit at No. 3 in the Big Ten standings with only one

As things stand today before No. 10 Wisconsin takes on No. 15 Ohio State, the Badgers sit at No. 3 in the Big Ten standings with only one game separating them from No. 1 Michigan.

Their top-15 matchup with the Buckeyes is a pivotal one in the Badgers’ quest for another Big Ten regular-season title, though the current KenPom ratings see the matchup a bit different than the AP Poll does.

Those ratings, as seen above, have Wisconsin in at No. 8–good for No. 3 in the conference behind Iowa and Michigan–and Ohio State down at No. 18.

In what has been a chaotic season in the Big Ten thus far to say the least, the ratings directly represent the conference’s standings at the top, though they still see some teams differently than the AP and its voters do.

I think it’s safe to say it’ll be interesting to see how the conference shakes out down the stretch and whether Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin or another team is able to break free at the top.

Wisconsin basketball’s updated game-by-game win probabilities for the remainder of the season

A lot has changed since last week, including the Badgers getting blown out at Michigan, winning at Rutgers and Michigan losing to Minnesota

With another week of the Wisconsin Badgers’ Big Ten season in the books, we’re back with another look at their updated game-by-game-win probabilities for the remainder of the season.

A lot has changed since the last run-through one week ago, including the Badgers getting blown out at Michigan, winning on the road at Rutgers and Michigan then losing to Minnesota.

With all the shakeup, Greg Gard’s team currently sits No. 3 in the conference with a 5-2 record, just .5 games behind No. 2 Iowa and 1 game behind No. 1 Michigan.

But, as is the case with every team in the conference this season, the road ahead for the Badgers has a chance to be a really rocky one.

ESPN.com lists win probabilities for each of those remaining games on their Big Ten schedule. Although these odds will change as the season progresses, it’s interesting to see where the team stands at this point compared to conference foes.

Here is the updated ESPN game-by-game win probabilities and the team’s predicted record for the remainder of the season:

The Wisconsin Badgers added to their class of 2022 offer sheet yesterday by extending one to 6’4″ point guard Rowan Brumbaugh.

The Northfield, Massachusetts native is currently unranked in the 247Sports composite and is now the No. 7 player to be offered by the Badgers in the class, joining four-star PG Tre Holloman, four-star SG Jaden Schutt, four-star SF Camden Heide, four-star PF Isaac Traudt, unranked PF Braden Huff and four-star C Joe Hurlburt.

Greg Gard and his staff are looking to up their game on the recruiting trail by landing a four-star or few with the hope of improving upon their No. 32-ranked 2021 class that contains four three-star recruits.

What Wisconsin’s Greg Gard said about Michigan

Why the Wisconsin Badgers couldn’t keep up with Michigan basketball in their head coach’s eyes.

[jwplayer xJITZUXe-XNcErKyb]

Many questioned whether or not Michigan basketball was for real or if its success was a product of an easy schedule. Well, Wisconsin learned the hard way that the Wolverines appear to be a legitimate Final Four contender.

The Badgers are no slouch, coming into the game considered as one of the Big Ten’s elite teams and one of the best in all of college basketball. It didn’t matter, however. The Wolverines did to Wisconsin what they had also done to Northwestern and Minnesota. Only, it was more emphatic.

Wisconsin found itself floundering after a tight game early, and the maize and blue pounced. From there, it was an avalanche, points racking up like snow cascading down from the mountaintop.

So, how did Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard respond in the immediate aftermath? He shared what he saw from the floor and why the Wolverines were able to take advantage of a team that rarely gets taken advantage of.

“I thought the two turning points were the two turnovers,” Gard said. “We had back to back with the turnover on the wing entry pass that we didn’t seal off the wing well enough to make a catch. And then right after that, I think it was a three-point game at that point in time, so they convert that and then we have a collision and I’ll have to look and see exactly what happened on it, the ball screen or dribble handoff where Trice got knocked down. I think he ran into his own guy with Reuvers but that ignited them. That combined with Potter not being in there I thought really gave them momentum and gave them some juice.

“Like I said, I’ve seen them do that with teams time and time again. We talked about it, try not to put yourself in those positions but also how do you respond to it? And that’s the disappointing thing is how we responded to it. Not only there at the end of the first half but also at the start of that second half. We got to the point we were taking a lot of jump shots, too many jump shots and obviously that led to easy offense for them.”

The avalanche metaphor is precisely how Gard actually sees it.

He made no excuses, noting that this is who Michigan is. If you give it an inch, it’s bound to not only take it for a mile but further down the highway until it’s transcontinental.

“Obviously credit to Michigan. The run they had in the first half where it went from three to double digits, whatever it was at that point in time, that was the turning point in the game,” Gard said. “The two fouls on Potter didn’t help in that regard in terms of what we were trying to establish inside and how he’s able to help us. But credit to them. I thought their aggressiveness, their physicality, were two things knowing that coming in, did not think we responded to that well. And got way out of character at the end of that first half and even into the second half with what we were doing offensively. It led to bad defense and obviously they’ve done that to a lot of teams. They get a little spark and it turns into an avalanche.”

The Wisconsin Badgers fell into the buzzsaw that are the Michigan Wolverines last night, losing the game 77-54 thanks to a 43-6 Wolverine scoring run.

The game marks the Badgers’ first 20-point loss since 2018 and only their fourth since the 2010-2011 season.

What Michigan HC Juwan Howard said about Wisconsin basketball after the game

It was a night to forget for Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Basketball team as fell 77-54 to Juwan Howard and the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines

It was a night to forget for Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Basketball team as they fell victim to a 43-6 run (yes, 43-6) and lost to the Michigan Wolverines 77-54.

If there was ever a “burn the tape game,” I think that’s what it would look like.

After the game, Michigan head coach Juwan Howard spoke about his team’s win and how much respect he has for this Wisconsin team and the Wisconsin program as a whole.

He first noted the Badgers’ defensive prowess and how concerned he was about his team’s offensive efficiency coming into the game.

“Wisconsin is such a great defensive team, one of the leading efficient teams, not only just in the league but in college basketball,” Howard said. “They do a great job of packing the paint, not allowing drives, and one of key things that we talked about as a team is just making a simple play and not trying to make the home run play.”

It is worth noting that many of the questions, understandably, addressed his Michigan team and their trajectory now sitting at 11-0 and 6-0 in the Big Ten.

He was asked, however, about his postgame conversation with Gard.

Here was his response:

“Greg is a guy who I respect a ton, like I do all — every coach in this Big Ten, because they all are great coaches. Got a chance to know Greg a little bit from the times when we had Zoom calls. They were once a week at times with all the Big Ten head coaches. There were times we had Zoom calls twice a week. But we all are on the front lines, trying to keep our players’ health and safety No. 1. And we all know how challenging it is to have a basketball season while the pandemic is happening. And it’s not easy. And Greg, like myself, we lose sleep. And we have those sleep disturbance while you’re trying to take a nap and lay your head on the pillow, but you may have not just Xs and Os you’re concerned with, you’re concerned with your players’ health. And I know how pure he is and so our conversation and relationship that we’ve grown to have at such and early moment, I have a ton of respect for Greg.”

The Badgers and Wolverines are set to square off again on February 14 at the Kohl Center, though Gard and his team have some business to address first, that which starts on Friday when they visit Rutgers.
