Bucs officially announce Greg Gaines signing

Details of Gaines’ previously-undisclosed contract have been released as well.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are officially getting some d-line depth.

While DT [autotag]Greg Gaines[/autotag]’ signing was reported early in free agency, the team officially announced the acquisition on Thursday. Not only did the signing become official, but there were also more contract details revealed as a result.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Gaines’ deal is worth $3.5 million with a max value of $4 million, though the incentives or roster bonuses that make up this deal are currently unknown. Gaines’ contract details were not initially disclosed, so now there’s a definitive number on the deal that brings him to Tampa Bay.

Gaines will be crucial to the Bucs’ defensive line depth, as the team has already lost Rakeem Nunez-Roches in free agency and could lose more players as the offseason continues. Gaines will also be familiar with some of his new teammates — he’s already played alongside Vita Vea and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka when he played college football at Washington.

What Bucs fans can expect from new DT Greg Gaines

Here is what Bucs fans could be getting from their new defensive tackle according to Rams Wire managing Editor Cameron DaSilva:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a new defensive tackle, and he could be a big contributor for head coach and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

The Bucs signed [autotag]Greg Gaines[/autotag] at the beginning of the free agency, shoring up the team’s defensive line depth after the departure of Rakeem Nunez-Roches. Gaines played for the Rams for the first four years of his career, and he’s reuniting with some former teammates from his college days — he played with both Vita Vea and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka at Washington.

Bucs Wire spoke to Rams Wire managing editor Cameron DaSilva about Gaines’ impact in Los Angeles and what he could do for the Buccaneers going forward. Take a look at our conversation below:

Greg Gaines agrees to deal with Buccaneers

Greg Gaines has agreed to a free-agent deal with the Buccaneers

For the second time this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed one of the Los Angeles Rams’ free agents. First it was Baker Mayfield and now Greg Gaines is heading to Tampa Bay.

Gaines has agreed to a deal with the Buccaneers, according to Tom Pelissero. The terms of the contract have not yet been disclosed.

In four years with the Rams, Gaines played 59 games and made 25 starts, including 16 games and 12 starts in 2022. He has 10.5 career sacks in the NFL, with 8.5 of those coming in the last two years.

He originally joined the Rams as a fourth-round pick in 2019 and worked his way into a starting role at nose tackle after Sebastian Joseph-Day got injured in 2021 and eventually left in free agency last offseason.

Bucs sign former Rams DT Greg Gaines

Gaines has amassed 10.5 sacks and 122 total tackles since entering the league in 2019.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are adding to their defensive line.

The NFL’s Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday that the Bucs intend to sign former Rams player Greg Gaines, who spent the last four years in Los Angeles.

Gaines has been an important part of the Rams’ defensive line depth for the past few years. He’s played 16 games or more from 2020-22 and also played 90% of snaps in the Rams’ Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2021 season, so he brings experience in big games to Tampa Bay’s defensive line. He’s amassed 10.5 sacks and 122 total tackles in his four years with Los Angeles.

The depth will be important for the Bucs, as players like Akiem Hicks and Will Gholston are free agents and Tampa Bay has already lost Rakeem Nunez-Roches in free agency to the New York Giants. Gaines’ signing should alleviate the problem in that regard, but it may be beneficial for the Bucs to draft another defensive lineman at the end of April.

Top available defensive tackles left in NFL free agency for the Browns to target

Even after landing Dalvin Tomlinson, the Browns must look to add more depth to their defensive line.

The Cleveland Browns swung and missed on defensive tackles Javon Hargrave and Dre’Mont Jones on the opening day of NFL free agency. They did land a pass rusher in Ogbonnia Okoronkwo to upgrade their defensive end room and struck a deal with Dalvin Tomlinson late at night to make a massive upgrade to their interior.

Given their cap space and the lack of talent currently in their defensive tackle room, adding multiple mid-level contracts rather than one big-named player may just be the better plan of attack. Here are the best available defensive tackles still on the board as the Browns look to regroup.

Mock free agency on the heels of the legal tampering period

Need a taste of what free agency could realistically look like? We’ve got you covered.

As the legal tampering period is set to begin tomorrow, the Cleveland Browns will look to get significantly better. Especially on the defensive side of the football. While their salary cap situation is still a bit rough, sitting $14 million in the red, they have until Wednesday to restructure contracts. This means they can come to agreements with free agents on Monday, even if the cap space is not officially cleared.

Here, we take a shot at a mock free agency for the Browns. Who could they sign? How will they create cap space? We address all of this here. For the value of the players signed, we will be using PFF’s free agent valuation numbers.

5 free agents for the Lions to avoid

Not every available free agent is a good idea for the Lions. Here are five players they should avoid.

Free agency is a great opportunity for NFL teams to bolster their rosters. But poor decisions in free agency can ruin them just as easily.

This is something Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes knows well. Here’s what Holmes said at the combine that spotlights his cautious approach to free agency.

“I told you guys at the end of the season, we’ll always be selective and strategic in free agency, and you’ve gotta be really careful in free agency,” Holmes stated. “But when I said that, it’s all about still finding the right guys. It’s not about how much money you have to spend. Regardless of how many resources you have, always being selective and strategic in that process. We’re just trying to find the right guys. I think we’ve done that in the past. A lot of the free agents we signed, they’ve had some really good years, and we gotta make some hard decisions here.”

Here are five free agents who just don’t seem like good ideas for the Lions. It could be the (anticipated) price tag, culture fit, or perhaps a poor schematic match.

4 free-agent defensive linemen the Panthers should consider signing

The Panthers’ defensive front is going to look a bit different under Ejiro Evero in 2023. Here are four free-agent linemen who can help ease in the transition.

Regardless of what’ll be a new-look defense, at least schematically, the Carolina Panthers have needed some help along its trench. So, are there any viable options out there on the open market?

Here are four free-agent defensive linemen they should give a look to.

Rams 2023 free agency preview: Will Greg Gaines remain in LA?

Greg Gaines has been an important piece of the Rams defense, but what’s next for him entering free agency?

Greg Gaines took a little while to become an impactful player for the Los Angeles Rams, but he really broke through in 2021 after Sebastian Joseph-Day got hurt. Gaines stepped in and became the starting nose tackle during the Rams’ Super Bowl run, playing at a very high level up front.

Unfortunately, he’ll now be a free agent after wrapping up his fourth season in Los Angeles. Gaines is a fan favorite and beloved in the locker room, so the Rams would be wise to bring him back – for his talent on the field, too, of course.

But with limited cap space, will they get a deal done when free agency begins?

5 free agents the Rams should consider re-signing this offseason

The Rams should consider re-signing these 5 free agents in the offseason.

After winning a Super Bowl a season ago, the Los Angeles Rams are entering unchartered territory in the Sean McVay era. Regardless of whether or not McVay returns in 2023 following a 5-12 campaign, the Rams are expected to have a decent amount of roster turnover this offseason.

With the Rams not being in the postseason, they’ll have a little more time to determine what free agents they want to bring back next season. While Los Angeles has 24 total free agents, we’ll be focusing on unrestricted or restricted free agents in this article.

Taking that into account, let’s take a look at the five free agents the Rams should consider bringing back in free agency this offseason.
