Notre Dame football: ESPN analyst not a fan of alternate uniforms for Irish

Notre Dame’s green jerseys for 2023 look sweet but they go entirely against the history of the Irish wearing green in a big game.

Greg McElroy played quarterback at one of the most traditional college football programs as he helped guide Alabama to a national championship in 2009.  He has done analyst work at ESPN the last few years and recently weighed in on Notre Dame’s alternate uniforms that they’ll wear against Ohio State.

“In college football, I have never been a supporter of the alternate uniform,” McElroy said on the “Always College Football” podcast. “If you’re a traditional powerhouse, where I know what your uniform is going to look like when you take the field, please don’t mess with it.”

“Like when Notre Dame wore those navy blue uniforms, and navy helmets, I’m like, who the heck is Navy playing here?” McElroy continued. “You are the Golden Domers, baby, do not mess with that. Don’t mess with your uniform. I know the kids like the gear and I get all that. That’s fun. I’m fine with that. Man, don’t abandon your identity as a college football program. Your identity (is) those awesome helmets, are those great uniforms.”

I was the same way as McElroy not all that long ago.  I didn’t understand why Notre Dame felt the need to wear different uniforms for the annual Shamrock Series game and thought schools that went with alternates were just trying too hard.

One time a year though isn’t a bad thing and I’ll get behind it.

But not the way it was presented for Notre Dame’s massive showdown with Ohio State this September.

Notre Dame Football announces when the Irish will wear green in 2022

The Irish will wear green in 2022

Green jerseys you say? Well, we now know when Notre Dame will suit up in an Irish wear green. It will happen on September 17th, when the Irish are set to face-off against California at 2pm EST.

The way that the announcement came out was quite interesting. Head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] had his hand in the video released by Notre Dame Football’s official Twitter account. It seems like Freeman had a lot of fun with making this video as he reads some fans rants about the Irish wearing green. Take look at the video yourself to see how Freeman takes the reins and announces when the Irish will wear green.

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets face-off in a rematch of last year’s Western Conference Finals.

Draymond Green celebrates the Steelers narrow AFC North win over the Baltimore Ravens

After the Pittsburgh Steelers narrow AFC North win against the Baltimore Ravens, Draymond Green chimed in on Twitter to celebrate.

Sunday featured a battle between a pair of top contenders in the AFC. “Big Ben” Roethlisberger led the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers into Baltimore for a matchup against the defending Most Valuable Player Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.

On the third play from scrimmage, the Steelers lit up the scoreboard after a mistake from Jackson. The Ravens signal-caller through an errant pass into the hands of Robert Spillane. The Steelers linebacker returned the interception 33 yards in the opposite direction for a pick-six touchdown.

The Ravens quickly bounced back with a touchdown pass from Jackson on the next drive. Later in the first quarter, the Ravens tacked on another touchdown and a field goal to take a 17-7 lead into the second quarter.

Despite the Ravens’ early lead, the Steelers broke off 21 points in the second half to steal the game in Baltimore.

Roethlisberger finished the game with 182 yards on 21-of-32 passing with two touchdowns. Jackson matched Roethlisberger’s two touchdowns. However, the 2019 MVP tossed a pair of interceptions.

After celebrating his alma mater Michigan State’s upset win over the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, Draymond Green chimed in on Twitter after the Steelers win in Baltimore. According to the former Defensive Player of the Year, the Spartans and Steelers victories led to a “great weekend.”

Last week, Green weighed in on Twitter after Pittsburgh’s last-second win against the Tennessee Titans.

The Week 8 tilt was the first of two bouts between the bitter rivals in the AFC North. After their big win against the Ravens, Green’s Steelers will travel to the lone star state for an interconference game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Draymond Green praises Gary Trent Jr.’s ‘game winning play’ for Trail Blazers vs. Nets

After his late triple gave the Portland Trail Blazers the lead in the fourth quarter, Draymond Green had high praise for Gary Trent Jr.

After dropping 61 and 51 points in back-to-back games, Damian Lillard continued his fierce streak of basketball with a chance at the postseason on the line.

Against the Brooklyn Nets, the Oakland native tallied 42 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field with 12 assists, three boards and two steals. Lillard splashed eight 3-pointers against the Nets with one coming from just inside the halfcourt line.

While Lillard was the centerpiece of Portland’s 134-133 victory against Brooklyn, one Golden State Warrior praised a different member of the Blazers.

After Gary Trent Jr. drilled a 3-pointer to give the Trail Blazers the lead with 2:29 remaining in the fourth quarter, Draymond Green chimed in on Twitter.

Via @Money23Green on Twitter:

Following Trent’s long-distance jumper, the Blazers were able to close out the Nets over the final two minutes of the contest. The Duke product finished the game with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field with four triples in 37 minutes.

Since entering the Orlando Bubble, Trent is averaging 16.9 points on 50.6 shooting from the field. The NBA Sophomore is on fire from beyond the arc, shooting 48.6 from deep.

Lillard, Trent Jr. and the Blazers will be back on the court at Disney World on Saturday for their much-anticipated Western Conference playoff play-in game against Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Watch: Draymond Green ejected in second quarter vs. Los Angeles Lakers

Draymond Green was assessed two technical fouls against the Los Angeles Lakers, triggering an ejection in the second quarter of the game.

Draymond Green’s return to the Warriors after missing two games didn’t last long. Green was ejected with 5:45 remaining in the second quarter, ending his night against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Golden State forward was battling with Lakers center Dwight Howard which led into an argument between Green and referee Tyler Ford. The official tagged Green with a technical foul.

On the next possession, Green got tangled up with Howard after a hard screen and was quickly assessed his second technical foul, triggering an ejection from the game. Green stormed off the court towards the Golden State locker room visibly upset.

The former Defensive Player of the Year ended his night with four assists, two points, a rebound, a steal and three turnovers in 10 minutes against the Lakers.

Green leads the NBA in ejections and is also tied for the lead in technicals at 14 with Houston’s Russell Westbrook. Green is only two technical fouls away before he receives a one-game suspension for reaching 16 on the season.

There are currently 70 wide receivers that are set to be free agents according to Spotrac. There’s a chance some of these pass-catchers will get the franchise tag, but most of them will end up testing the free agency market. Some may end up on a practice squad or out of the league, while others will end up cashing in. It’s the latter group we are focusing on here. These eight wide receivers are the best on the market.

A.J. Green

It doesn’t matter that Green didn’t play last year and has been hobbled by injuries two years in a row. We’re talking about A.J. Green here. He was drafted fourth overall in 2011. He’s made the Pro Bowl seven times. He has physical abilities that wide receivers can only dream of having. He makes big plays. He can stretch the field. He can be a possession wide receiver. Yes, his injuries are a concern, but no one should have rushed back to get on the field for that Bengals team last year. There’s a good chance Green is franchise tagged. There’s no way Cincinnati lets him leave without compensation.

Kansas City Chiefs’ Frank Clark calls Draymond Green his ‘brother’

During Super Bowl media day, Kansas City Chiefs edge rusher, Frank Clark called Golden State Warriors forward, Draymond Green his brother.

It’s officially Super Bowl week, and for the first time since 2012, the Golden State Warriors neighbor, the San Francisco 49ers, will represent the NFC side in the big game.

With the Warriors struggling throughout the 2019-20 NBA season, the 49ers have acquired the Bay Area’s championship baton. However, one Warrior has connections to the 49ers’ opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs.

One an NBA player, one an NFL player, each from rival colleges, Frank Clark and Draymond Green, may not seem like they have much in common on the surface. Nevertheless, according to the Kansas City Chiefs edge rusher, although the two went to rival universities, they’ve been close since college.

At Super Bowl “Opening Night” in South Beach, Clark spoke about his bond with the Warriors’ Defensive Player of the Year.

Me and Draymond, we’ve been tight, tight friends since college — I know he went to Michigan State, I went to Michigan, you know, bitter rivals, but at the end of the day, the friendships come before all of that as we developed a close friendship early on in college.

Clark said Green played a “big brother role” for him throughout college and mentored the young Michigan Wolverine product, showing him “the right way to do things.”

He assumed that big brother role and was just showing me the ropes, you know, I didn’t understand — I was a troubled kid, getting into a lot of stuff and he stepped in and kind of filled that role as one of the guys that was mentoring me and just showing me the right way to do things.

Although Green has always been there for Clark through his career, the two shared some fights before they blossomed into “brothers.”

Hats off to him, he’s always been there my whole career supporting me through the ups and the downs — never left my side and I’m always thankful for that — It started with a few fights first, I’m going to be honest — We had to fight a little bit before we got close, but we put the college stuff to the side — I still get on him from time to time, you know, Michigan is kindof better than Michigan State right now in basketball and football, so I give him a lot of stuff — but it’s all love at the end of the day, that’s my brother.

The San Francisco 49ers will face Clark and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 2, in Miami, Florida, with a chance to bring a championship back to the Bay Area.

Draymond Green dons a new jersey number at Warriors practice in L.A.

After losing six-straight games, the Golden State need to take new measures to end their losing streak. For Draymond Green he used rookie, Alen Smailagic’s No. 6 jersey at a recent Warriors’ practice.

The start of the new decade hasn’t been kind to the Golden State Warriors. Since the ball dropped in New York City at Times Square to ring in the new year, the Warriors haven’t won a game.

To cap off 2019, Golden State won four of its last six games, but 2020 has been an unwelcome wake-up call. The Warriors have been missing their leading scorer, D’Angelo Russell, in every game of 2020. Without Russell, the team is averaging under 100 total points per game over their last four contests.

Losing streaks can be hard to shake. Some individuals take extreme measures to snap a losing streak, for former Defensive Player of the Year, Draymond Green, it could be as simple as a jersey swap.

Before the struggling Dubs tipped off against the Los Angeles Clippers, the team practiced at UCLA in Pasadena and Green suited up a little different. Green was spotted wearing rookie Alen Smailagic’s No. 6 practice jersey during the team’s morning shootaround.

Smailagic is coming off a career-high 10 points against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks — it looks like Green is taking notice of the 19-year-old Serbian product.

Things don’t get any easier on the Warriors when the team travels to Staples Center to face Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers sit at third place in the Western Conference with only 12 losses on the season.

The Clippers could extend the Warriors losing streak to tie a 2019-20 season-high of seven straight losses. If the Warriors can break their losing streak, Green might have to stick with the rookie’s practice jersey for a while.
