Notre Dame football: ESPN analyst not a fan of alternate uniforms for Irish

Notre Dame’s green jerseys for 2023 look sweet but they go entirely against the history of the Irish wearing green in a big game.

The mystique of Notre Dame’s green jerseys is because in 1977 the team was surprised after pregame warmups to find their locker room filled with bright green jerseys.  There was an undeniable surprise that only added fuel to the fire as Notre Dame upset USC that day en-route to a national championship.

The same thing happened in 2005 when Charlie Weis surprised his team with green jerseys before falling late in the legendary “Bush Push” contest.

That surprise element simply isn’t there in this regard as the jersey decision was announced months ago and the spoof video was released earlier this week.

Listen, I’m not against alternate uniforms at Notre Dame as a whole, in fact I’ve grown to like them once a year.  However, if you’re going to bust out the green for a marquee opponent, follow tradition and do it as a surprise, not announce it months ahead of time.
