ESPN shows little faith in Arkansas ahead of Sweet 16 matchup with Gonzaga

The Basketball Power Index gives the Razorbacks very little chance in this one.

Arkansas, the No. 4 seed from the West region, survived another scare on Saturday by being heavily reliant on defensive production in a 53-48 win over No. 12 seed New Mexico State.

Next up on the Razorbacks’ path to a championship is No. 1 seed Gonzaga, who they will meet on Thursday in San Francisco, Calif. In an early matchup prediction, ESPN has given Arkansas very little chance to defeat the Bulldogs.

In their latest Basketball Power Index Matchup Predictor, ESPN is giving Gonzaga an 85.8% chance to defeat Arkansas on Thursday to advance to the Elite Eight.

Gonzaga has played well enough to be considered one of the nation’s best all season long with victories over Texas Tech, UCLA, and Texas, and finishing 13-1 in West Coast Conference play. ‘

The Bulldogs recently defeated Memphis in the round of 32 on Saturday, 82-78. Gonzaga trailed Memphis, 41-31 at halftime. That was when freshman Drew Timme put his teammates on his back and led them to a win. Timme led the Gonzaga comeback effort by scoring 21 of his 25 points in the second half.

For the second game in a row, Arkansas needed late free throws to pull away and establish the win. In the first-round game against Vermont, JD Notae was successful on both free throw attempts with 0:09 remaining in the contest to give Arkansas the 75-71 win over the Catamounts. In Saturday’s win over New Mexico State, Chris Lykes was fouled following a dunk by New Mexico Stare to cut the Razorback lead to 50-48 with 0:02 remaining. Lykes would succeed on both attempts, with Au’Diese Toney getting a chance at the line following a personal foul as time expired.

The Razorbacks look to shock the world on Thursday night. Tipoff time has yet to be announced.

Best bets in the West Region of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Tournament

Who besides the Zags should you put your money on?

The West Region is largely thought to be top-seed Gonzaga’s to lose. The Bulldogs have been the best team in the country for most of the season, and after coming up short of a title so many times in the past, this year’s team led by Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren feels like the one that can get them over the hump.

Helping Gonzaga’s case is having maybe the least-regarded two-seed in the tournament in its bracket. Duke’s seeding shocked plenty who thought Tennessee should have gotten the nod, however the Blue Devils are still loaded with enough talent to give anyone trouble.

The real sneaky team to be aware of in this region is the Big 12 tourney runner-up Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are elite defensively and have a number of players they can go to for offense, led by Bryson Williams and Terrence Shannon.

Here’s a look at the best bets in the West Region, with odds via Tipico Sportsbook.

Even though the Bulldogs are really only beginning their climb to the basketball mountaintop, there have been plenty of notable alums to lace up for action in the Association. Let’s look at the all-time best Gonzaga players to play in the NBA.

West Coast basketball top-25 rankings: Oregon and Washington State hurt bubble chances with losses

Gonzaga remains the top dog on the West Coast, while many teams with bubble aspirations took a hit with losses this past weekend.

The month of February is halfway over and the NCAA Tournament picture is starting to get a little clearer.

The West Coast has had a historically excellent season, with the top two teams in the country both residing west of the Mississippi in the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Arizona Wildcats.

UCLA and USC remain formidable opponents as well, while the Mountain West has three outstanding, potentially tournament darling squads in Wyoming, Boise State, and Colorado State all performing well.

However, a handful of bubble hopefuls did some serious damage to their hopes this past week, with Oregon and Washington State each losing bad games to Cal and Arizona State, respectively, opening up the possibility of a four-bid WCC with BYU winning two in a row and San Francisco and Saint Mary’s each remaining firmly in the hunt for a tournament bid.

Finally, two teams were added to the rankings this week: Stephen F. Austin returns after a nice week in the WAC, while Long Beach State takes over as the lone representative from the Big West. Dan Monson’s team is rolling with a 9-1 record in conference play as he looks to get back to the tournament with a west coast mid-major program – harkening back to his days as Gonzaga’s head coach back in 1999.

Without further ado, here is a look at the west coast college hoops power rankings in mid-February:

3 West Coast basketball games to watch before pivoting to Super Bowl 56 on Sunday

Tracking Saturday’s basketball games out west.

The West Coast gets to showcase why it’s the best coast this weekend.

Everyone’s attention will swing westward on Sunday for Super Bowl LVI, but Saturday night’s hoops will take the stage first. You’ll find some of the biggest names in the basketball world on the national stage from both college basketball and the NBA.

What’s on the menu for the night? Lots of things. There are cross-town rivalries in Los Angeles, superstar battles in the Bay Area and a top-25 showdown in the Pacific Northwest that should all make for a great Saturday night in the sports world.

Here’s the rundown on the matchups, with odds and lines from Tipico Sportsbook.

West Coast basketball top-25 rankings: Bubble teams take big strides in February

A handful of bubble teams took positive steps forward on the west coast, while UCLA got swept by the Arizona’s. Inside last week’s action:

It was a huge, bubble-altering week of college basketball on the west coast.

San Francisco throttled BYU, sending the Cougars on a spiral that could cost them a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, Wyoming cruised through a pair of tough Mountain West opponents, re-establishing themselves as a player not just for an at-large bid – but for a straight up conference title.

Seattle University lost some ground in their quest for a conference championship, while Washington State made up ground and is nearing “last four in” territory this March.

In non-bubble news, UCLA lost twice to Arizona and Arizona State, Arizona also beat USC, Gonzaga ran through BYU, and Randy Bennett’s Saint Mary’s squad remains a potent force defensively.

Only one newcomer to the list this week, Montana State, who replaces fellow Big Sky tem Weber State in the power rankings, moving up as the team to beat in the conference.

Without further ado, here are the top-25 west coast college basketball power rankings after the first week of February:

Oklahoma remains on the outside looking in of latest USA TODAY Sports Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll

After another up and down week, the Sooners remain on the outside of the Ferris Mowers USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

The Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team has been stuck in a stretch of up and down play over the last few weeks since the start of Big 12 play. After going 10-2 prior to the start of conference play, the Sooners have gone 3-6 in their last nine games, including a four-game losing streak.

After bouncing back from their four-game losing streak with a 10-point win over West Virginia, the Sooners went on the road to face the Auburn Tigers who are ranked No. 1 in the AP poll. The Tigers and Gonzaga tied for the top spot in this week’s poll, with both team gathering 784 points and 16 first-place votes.

Oklahoma received just one vote in this week’s edition of the poll. The Sooners have a big matchup with the TCU Horned Frogs tonight at the Lloyd Noble Center. The last time the two teams met, the Frogs stole a one-point win in overtime after Elijah Harkless’ last-second shot was unable to fall.
