3 things to know about new Bears CB Terell Smith

Here are a few things to know about new Bears cornerback Terell Smith.

Another cornerback went off the board for the Chicago Bears in 2023 NFL Draft. They selected Minnesota’s Terell Smith with the No. 165 pick in the fifth round. It’s the second cornerback picked by the Bears in the draft after they chose Tyrique Stevenson out of Miami (FL) in the second round.

Smith played five seasons for the Golden Gophers, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He started 29 games and recorded four interceptions and one forced fumble during his career. In 2022, Smith had arguably his best season with 38 total tackles (4.5 for a loss) as well as two interceptions and five pass breakups.

Here are a few things to know about Smith and what he brings to the Bears.

Alabama Football announces future home-and-home series with Minnesota

Alabama replaces the 2032, 2033 Oklahoma Series with a home-and-home against Minnesota.

Alabama football has continued to schedule strong non-conference opponents for future schedules. Today, the program announced a home-and-home series with the Minnesota Golden Gophers for the 2032 and 2033 seasons.

“The first game will take place in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 18, 2032, with the Golden Gophers coming to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 17, 2033,” the official press release reads. “It will mark only the second and third games between the two programs and the first contests during the regular season. Minnesota won the only game in the series, a 20-16 win over the Crimson Tide in the 2004 Music City Bowl.”

Minnesota serves as a replacement for the series with Oklahoma the Crimson Tide had scheduled. It needed to be replaced because the Sooners will soon be joining the Southeastern Conference.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football and news surrounding the Crimson Tide.

2022 NFL draft: Scouting report for Seahawks EDGE Boye Mafe

Here’s a look at the scouting report for the Seattle Seahawks’ newest edge rusher, selected at No. 40 overall out of Minnesota.

The Seattle Seahawks love themselves a solid edge rusher and they got just that with their first pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. At No. 40 overall, the Seahawks selected Boye Mafe out of Minnesota.

Here’s a look at a portion of his scouting report from Natalie Miller of Draft Wire.

Mafe has some of the most rare traits in this year’s EDGE class, with outstanding measurables, explosive athleticism, and rare burst. This combination gives Mafe limitless potential, something any NFL team should love the chance to develop.

Pass rush being his biggest strength, Mafe uses his long arms to slap away any attempts at an inside grab by tackles, and leans on his raw explosiveness to blow by them afterwards. He also uses his arms and slams his hands into the chest of lineman, creating his own leverage and driving his legs through them on his way to the quarterback. His pass rush will only get better at the next level, as he learns to use his hands more efficiently and take advantage of his physical upside.

In the run game, Mafe is able to keep blockers at bay by extending through the block, and bending to disengage quickly should a blocker enter his gap. His flexibility and length make it easy for him to cut off inside zone runs, and give him a wide tackling range to make plays.

Mafe’s full scouting report can be found here.

Notre Dame Opens Big Ten Tournament with Win

The Fighting Irish failed to convert on a five minute power play in the second period but did find a net via a Trevor Janicke put-back late in the period.

Quarterfinals for the 2020 Big Ten Hockey Tournament got underway Friday and can I start by just throwing a little praise to the Big Ten?

I know that’s not generally a popular view in these parts and I tend to lead that charge but in hockey the regular season conference champion gets a first round bye in the conference tournament while the other six qualifying schools play a best-of-three against their quarterfinal opponent to advance.

It’s not perfect as I wish it was a best-of-three in the next two rounds but hey, it’s at least a start.

Now to Friday’s game:

No. 5 Notre Dame dominated the first period Friday at No. 4 Minnesota outshooting the Gophers 12-2. However, no pucks found the net as the opening frame ended scoreless.

The Fighting Irish failed to convert on a five minute power play in the second period but did find a net via a Trevor Janicke put-back late in the period.

Taking a 1-0 lead to the final frame, the Notre Dame defense continued to dominate the evening as they allowed just 12 shots against all night long which resulted in Cale Morris’s 11th career shutout, the third such showing in a Big Ten Tournament game.

Notre Dame and Minnesota again battle Saturday night in Minneapolis with puck drop set for 7 p.m. ET. A win would send Notre Dame to the semi-finals while a loss would force a deciding game three which would be played Sunday night again at Minnesota.

Minnesota at Northwestern: Three things to know

1. Minnesota suffered its first loss of the season last week, dropping a 23-19 decision at then-No. 23 Iowa Hawkeyes. The Gophers still control their own destiny to win the division and make their first Big Ten Championship Game. After Northwestern, they close the regular season at home against second-place Wisconsin, which is one game back.

Northwestern snapped a seven-game losing streak by stepping out of conference for a 45-6 rout of lowly UMass (1-10) last Saturday. It’s been a tough season for the ‘Cats, who a year ago won the Big Ten West and lost to Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game.

2. Gophers QB Tanner Morgan, who has thrown for 707 yards in the last two games, is in the concussion protocol. With his status for Northwestern uncertain, Cole Kramer or Jacob Clark – both true freshmen – could start.

3. Northwestern has won the last two head-to-head meetings, 24-14 at Minnesota last season and 39-0 at home in 2017.

Prediction

Minnesota 35, Northwestern 17

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. Minnesota’s -667 is too chalky. Every $6.67 wagered on the Gophers to win outright would profit $1 if they do so (Ex: Bet $66.70 to profit $10). Betting on Northwestern (+450) pays 4.5-to-1, but the Wildcats are not winning Saturday no matter who’s behind center for the Gophers. I just can’t suggest to anyone to lay that kind of wood.

Against the Spread (ATS)

MINNESOTA (-12.5, -134) is the STRONGEST PLAY. With a full week to fume about the Iowa loss, the Gophers will take out their frustrations on the Wildcats, who are 2-8 against the spread this season. The Gophers are 6-3-1 ATS in 2019.

New to sports betting? Every $1.34 wagered that Minnesota will win by 13 or more points will profit $1.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 39.5 (-115) is worth a small play. Minnesota averages 35.7 PPG and is 6-4 O/U this season. Northwestern ranks 129th (out of 130 teams) with 14.5 PPG and it’s 3-7 O/U. Even if Minnesota’s Morgan sits, look for WRs Rashod Bateman (945 receiving yards, 7 TDs) and Tyler Johnson (900 receiving yards, 9 TDs) to have big games. Meanwhile, Northwestern should be able to move the ball behind freshman RB Evan Hull, who ran for 220 yards on 24 carries vs. UMass last week.
