ACC baseball tournament: Semi-final Saturday Preview

It’s a semi-final Saturday at the ACC baseball tournament. Details here:

It’ll be one match-up of Cinderella’s and one of the heavy favorites on Saturday at the ACC baseball tournament in Charlotte.

In the first game on Saturday at Truist Field in Charlotte, it’ll be No. 8 Virginia taking on No. 9 Duke with a spot in the championship round on the line.

Virginia qualified for the semi-finals after blowing out No. 1 Notre Dame 14-1 on Friday afternoon while Duke qualified as the nine-seed after a blowout win over No. 5 Florida State and a walk-off win against No. 4 Miami.

Duke has won 10-straight games and will look to make it 11 at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday against the Cavaliers.

The winner of Duke and Virginia will take on the winner of Saturday evening’s No. 2 Georgia Tech vs. No. 3 NC State contest.

Georgia Tech dropped their tournament opener against Clemson but refused to quit against Louisville, trailing three different times before coming back each one of them and eventually winning in 12 innings.

NC State clinched their advancement after hanging off No. 10 Pitt 3-2 on Wednesday.  The Wolfpack fell in an inconsequential contest against North Carolina on Friday night, 9-6.

Ever since college basketball experts began make their early predictions for the 2021-22 season, Notre Dame often has been included. Joe Lunardi of ESPN still has the Irish in his Bracketology. Now, Jon Rothstein of College Hoops Today is ranking the Irish 44th in the upcoming season’s first edition of the Rothstein 45.

Notre Dame is the ACC team ranked lowest in this installment. Florida State and Duke have the conference’s best rankings at 13th and 14th, respectively. Virginia Tech and North Carolina are next to each other with respective rankings of 20th and 21st. They’re followed by Virginia (24th), Syracuse (26th), Georgia Tech (28th) and Louisville (43rd).

Yale transfer Paul Atkinson is expected to crack the Irish’s starting lineup, and the only losses are Juwan Durham and Nikola Djogo, the latter of whom transferred to Northeastern for his final year of eligibility. With the Irish’s core remaining almost intact, it’s hard to imagine another season together won’t work wonders.

2021 NFL Draft: Jags select Georgia Tech WR Jalen Camp with selection No. 209

The Jags added more competition to their receivers group by drafting Georgia Tech WR Jalen Camp with their last pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars continued the trend of adding depth at receiver in this week’s draft by using their last pick of the process (No. 209) on Georgia Tech receiver Jalen Camp. With the selection, he became the fourth player of the Jags’ 2021 draft class to come from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

With the addition of the 6-foot-2, 220-pound receiver, the Jags will have an interesting competition at receiver in the spring and summer, though Camp’s acquisition as a late-round pick seems to indicate he’s a developmental receiver who could be viewed as a special-teamer. He’ll join the Jags after garnering 46 career catches for 786 receiving yards and five touchdowns with the Yellow Jackets.

The 2020 season was Camp’s best during his time in Atlanta as he was able to accumulate 27 catches for 417 yards and four touchdowns.

Like many Urban Meyer targets, Camp not only brings size to the mix, but he also is a speed threat. During his pro day, he ran a 4.43 in the 40-yard dash and also showed his explosiveness with a 39.5-inch vertical jump. If that wasn’t enough, he was able to put up 30 reps on the bench press.

The rookie will now join a receivers room with DJ Chark Jr., Marvin Jones Jr., Laviska Shenault Jr., Collin Johnson, and Phillip Dorsett among notables. According to the team’s Twitter page, he’ll at least have one rookie receiver joining him as Josh Imatorbhebhe from Illinois will sign with the team as an undrafted free agent.

Notre Dame target Jaylen Sneed named linebacker MVP at Rivals Camp

A Notre Dame target had a great weekend.

Any college program eyeing a recruit always has to be thrilled whenever that recruit achieves an impressive feat on the playing surface. To that end, Notre Dame surely had to be excited to see outside linebacker target Jaylen Sneed do well at the Rivals Camp he participated in. In fact, he was named the best linebacker at the camp and now is set to take part in the Rivals Five-Star Challenge:

Sneed, who hails from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, announced he had received an offer from Marcus Freeman on Jan. 18. Since then, both Rivals and 247Sports have picked Notre Dame as the clear-cut favorite to land Sneed’s services. Of course, it’s by no means a done deal because the Irish have to hope their offer beats out those from South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia Tech and Florida among others. However, it’s fun to anticipate Sneed putting pen to paper to indicate that he’s indeed coming to South Bend.

Baseball: Irish fall short in finale, still takes series over Georgia Tech

Just missed a home series sweep

The first two games of the home series against Georgia Tech saw the Irish do what they have done all year, which was win. Unfortunately, Sunday’s final game of the series the bats came up short and so did Notre Dame, falling 4-2 to the Yellow Jackets.

It was a game-long battle with GT, as Tech jumped out to an early 1-0 lead only to see the Irish battle back and get ahead 2-1 after six inning. The Yellow Jackets then scored three unanswered runs, to get to the final tally.

Star first-baseman Niko Kavadas had two hits while right fielder Ryan Cole and shortstop Zack Prajzner each drove in a run.

Even though Sunday wasn’t a completion of a sweep, it was still a series win over a ranked opponent, GT was No. 14 coming into the weekend. One of two conference teams to have single-digit losses, Link Jarrett’s turnaround of the program has been spectacular.

The Irish get back on the field this Tuesday as they host Central Michigan during a mid-week contest.

Epic comeback gives Irish win in opener vs. Georgia Tech

“Don’t call it a comeback” – LL Cool J

“Don’t call it a comeback!” – LL Cool J

Trailing 7-0 after 3 1/2 innings of play on Friday evening at Eck Stadium it sure looked like No. 12 Notre Dame was headed towards a series-opening loss to No. 14 Georgia Tech.

Kind of like the fight song goes though, “what tho the odds be great or small, old Notre Dame will win overall”.

And that’s exactly what wound up happening in a wild one to open the series against the Yellow Jackets.

“That is one of the greatest team wins I have ever been a part of,” said head coach Link Jarrett. “I have coached for a while and played for a while, I can’t remember anything like that.”

Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh the Irish used a pair of home runs from Jack Branniagan (solo) and Niko Kavadas (two-run) to get Notre Dame back within one.

Georgia Tech came back with two more of their own in the top-half of the eighth but the Irish again rallied in the bottom half of the inning, capping it with a Carter Putz walk with the bases loaded to give Notre Dame their first lead at 10-9.

Joe Sheridan then pitched his second inning of work to finish of the Yellow Jackets in the ninth.  Sheridan was one of eight pitchers the Irish used in their epic victory.

Notre Dame improves to 14-5 overall and 13-5 in ACC play while Georgia Tech falls to 14-11 overall and 11-8 in the conference.

Previewing Notre Dame & Georgia Tech’s weekend showdown

Another showdown in South Bend this weekend. Get ready baseball fans!

Two weeks ago a first happened in the history of Frank Eck Stadium, which opened its doors on Notre Dame’s campus in 1994.

When Notre Dame and Louisville matched up it was the first series in the history of the stadium to be played between two teams ranked in college baseball’s top-15.

Now, just two weeks later, the second top-15 match-up comes your way this weekend as No. 12 Notre Dame (13-5, 12-4) welcomes No. 14 Georiga Tech (14-10, 11-7)  to the Eck.

Georgia Tech had been ranked as high as sixth nationally before hitting a bit of a speedbump in losing two-of-three to Virginia and dropping their latest contest to USC Upstate.

The Yellow Jackets do bring a couple of great starting pitchers to South Bend as junior Andy Archer has posted a remarkable 1.86 ERA in seven starts while Brent Hunter has also been stellar with a 2.82 mark in his seven starts.

Offensively, Georgia Tech is led by freshman catcher Kevin Parada who leads the team in hits with 39 and is tied for the team lead with five home runs.

Game times for this weekend’s series are as follows and can be seen on ESPN+:

Friday:  5 p.m. ET
Saturday:  2 p.m. ET
Sunday:  1 p.m. ET

Notre Dame presents offer to receiver recruit Johntay Cook II

Everyone and their mother knows by now how much Notre Dame was hurting at receiver throughout 2020.

Everyone and their mother knows by now how much Notre Dame was hurting at receiver throughout 2020. Such is the case when you’ve just lost your go-to target in Chase Claypool. That’s why the Irish are eager to replenish the position by any means possible, even if that help won’t arrive for a couple of years. On Wednesday, Del Alexander made an offer to Johntay Cook II, a high school sophomore from DeSoto, Texas:

Cook also runs track, so you know right away that his speed will be a valuable commodity for whatever school he ends up with. He’ll have his pick, too, because several prominent programs already have thrown their hats in the ring for him. They include Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas, Baylor, Florida State, South Carolina, Texas Tech, Kansas, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, USC, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Auburn, LSU, Illinois and Nebraska. There obviously are high hopes for his future if he’s getting all of these offers now, so Notre Dame would be extremely lucky to land him.

4 darkhorse candidates to make serious noise during March Madness

One of the reasons we watch March Madness is for an upset. You want to see which team is going to have a Cinderella story at the Big Dance.

You can admit it. One of the reasons you watch March Madness is for an upset. You want to see which team is going to have a Cinderella story at the Big Dance.

While there is no guarantee that the NCAA Tournament will have a sleeper advance far, and the favorites could all end up in the Final Four, that in and of itself is part of the fun.

No one can properly predict who will create these heartwarming stories. If we could, it would no longer be much of an upset. But if there are any teams who go farther than expected during this postseason, we are pretty sure it will be one of these four programs.

Notre Dame makes scholarship offer to another 2022 quarterback

With Ian Book out the door, the debate for Notre Dame is whether Brendon Clark or Drew Pyne will be his successor at quarterback in 2021.

With Ian Book out the door, the debate for Notre Dame is whether Brendon Clark or Drew Pyne will be his successor at quarterback in 2021. But what if neither of those guys is the long-term solution at the position?

Tyler Buchner is a big-time recruit but what about the recruiting class of 2022?

Maybe the upcoming season will be a bridge between Book and the next great Irish quarterback. Specifically, Pyne and Clark could be keeping the seat warm for Drew Allar, a pro-style quarterback from Medina, Ohio, who has received an offer from Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees:

Allar now has offers from 22 schools. Just this week, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Illinois and Ole Miss joined the list. He’s also drawn significant interest from programs like Wake Forest, Iowa, USF, Washington, Iowa State, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Penn State, Indiana, Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
