Rutgers football commit John Stone talks Rivals camp, updates recruitment: ‘I’m 100 percent locked in’

Rutgers football verbal John Stone talks about his solid showing at the Rivals camp in Philadelphia last week.

The first commit in the Rutgers football class of 2023 put together a strong showing last Sunday at the Rivals camp in Philadelphia. John Stone is hoping to take this momentum from the showcase event into this offseason.

Coming off a strong junior season at Washington Township High School (Sewell, N.J.), Stone committed to Rutgers in early February. He is considered one of the top offensive linemen in the region.

Rivals ranks Stone as the No. 18 guard in the nation.

The class of 2023 for Rutgers football features five total commits, with two of those players hailing from New Jersey. Both players are top 10 in the state with Stone and four-star JaSire Peterson forming the foundation of the class.

Stone had a strong performance at the Rivalscamp, earning praise from the analysts in attendance.

It was a good showing from Stone, backing up his reputation as one of the best in New Jersey in this recruiting cycle.

“It was a great weekend full of competing and learning,” Stone told RutgersWire.

“I think I did well. I got into the one-on-ones trying to bully people. But my performance was good.”

Ranked by Rivals as a three-star and the seventh player in New Jersey in the class of 2023, Stone did say he is hoping to get a bump in the rankings.

Stone has the chance to crack the top five rankings in the state and grab a fourth star.

“Of course, always striving to be better,” Stone said.

Stone said that despite being committed to Rutgers, he is hearing from other programs. He won’t say which programs have reached out, largely because it doesn’t matter to him to put that information out publicly.

“Yeah other schools have reached out,” Stone said.

“But I am 100 percent locked in.”

Notre Dame QB commit Angeli gives thoughts on 2021 starting job debate

Who do you think will win the starting job?

Notre Dame is betting big on quarterback commit Steve Angeli, who will join the Irish for the 2022 season. Their high hopes for him have to be ascended after the performance he’s put on at Rivals camp this week. It’s interesting to watch given that the Irish still aren’t sure who will start at quarterback for them in 2021. Angeli was asked about it at the camp, and here’s what he had to say:

Yeah, it’s not a very exciting answer, but given that he’s mostly on the outside looking in aside from conversations with Tommy Rees, it shouldn’t be a surprise. The truth is the Irish have very viable candidates in Jack Coan, Drew Pyne and Tyler Buchner, and none of them emerged as a lead candidate during the spring practices. It’s possible we won’t get an answer until shortly before the Irish open their season in prime time at Florida State. While you might not want to hear that, it is what it is.

Notre Dame target Jaylen Sneed named linebacker MVP at Rivals Camp

A Notre Dame target had a great weekend.

Any college program eyeing a recruit always has to be thrilled whenever that recruit achieves an impressive feat on the playing surface. To that end, Notre Dame surely had to be excited to see outside linebacker target Jaylen Sneed do well at the Rivals Camp he participated in. In fact, he was named the best linebacker at the camp and now is set to take part in the Rivals Five-Star Challenge:

Sneed, who hails from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, announced he had received an offer from Marcus Freeman on Jan. 18. Since then, both Rivals and 247Sports have picked Notre Dame as the clear-cut favorite to land Sneed’s services. Of course, it’s by no means a done deal because the Irish have to hope their offer beats out those from South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia Tech and Florida among others. However, it’s fun to anticipate Sneed putting pen to paper to indicate that he’s indeed coming to South Bend.
