Georgia State vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

Appalachian State was supposed to be the Sun Belt’s killer running team this year, and it’s turning out to be Georgia State.

The Panthers can throw a little bit when they have to, but the veteran combination of backs and quarterback Darren Grainger are starting to take over.

Army ran for more yards, but Georgia State was more effective on the ground in the 31-14 win. It ripped through Georgia Southern for 336 yards, and they’re combining it with a defense that takes the ball away by the truckload.

It’s a great combination that turned the season around, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The Georgia State offense is almost never on the field. For a team that runs the ball as effectively as any in the country, it doesn’t do a thing to control the clock.

The Panthers are dead last in the nation in time of possession partly because they can’t come up with a third down stop. They make up for it with takeaways.

And that’s it. That’s everything for an Appalachian State that’s better than Texas State, but lost last week with two turnovers and 12 penalties. It gave up the ball twice in the loss to James Madison and once against North Carolina.

It’s 3-0 when it doesn’t turn the ball over and 0-3 when it does.

However, it can play a little offense, too, averaging 445 yards per game, and  …

What’s Going To Happen

Appalachian State will turn the ball over, but it’ll break the pattern by holding up against the run. The Panthers might be running well, but Appalachian State will do it better.

The passing game has gone off for the Mountaineers, but they’re at their best when they’re ripping off yards in chunks. They’ll do a little of everything in a high-scoring shootout.

Old Dominion vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Georgia State’s defense has been funky. It got ripped up by the Appalachian State running game in last week’s loss, got hit with 359 passing yards in the win over Georgia Southern a few weeks ago, and Old Dominion’s offense can  adapt to whatever works.

The passing game has been steady enough to be a sure thing to hit 200 yards, and the ground attack rumbled all over Coastal Carolina in a shocking win a few weeks ago.

With a great pass rush to bother Panther QB Darren Grainger, the defense should be okay, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Georgia State Will Win

Old Dominion has a nightmare of a time on third downs, the pass defense is an issue, and it’s one of the few teams in the Sun Belt that can give Georgia State a run for being worse in the time of possession battle.

The Panthers are going to give up a ton of yards though the air, but they usually make up for it with a whale of a ground attack that gives up 212 yards per game.

The D has the ability to crank up multiple takeaways with two or more in four games, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Old Dominion doesn’t turn the ball over. At least it hasn’t given it up over the last two games and hasn’t had a huge issue with mistakes so far.

The Georgia State pass defense will struggle, Old Dominion should with the turnover battle, and the road side should come up with a strong win on the road to keep bowl hopes alive.

Georgia Southern vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The offense continues to move the chains.

It’s fourth in the nation in third down conversions, averages 500 yards per game, and it’s versatile enough to keep things going in a variety of ways.

The passing game has been great, the ground attack averages 5.6 yards per carry, and it all starts with an offensive line that doesn’t allow anything in the backfield.

Georgia Southern leads the nation in fewest tackles for loss allowed and is second in sacks allowed.

Georgia State doesn’t come up with sacks and struggles to get behind the line.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Panthers finally got the season going with a terrific 31-14 win over Army. They played well over the first month but couldn’t force a break, and then it all worked with the ground game and takeaways finally getting it done.

Can they keep running on the Eagles? The Georgia State ground attack hit the 200 yard mark against everyone but Coastal Carolina, and Georgia Southern is allowing 5.4 yards per carry getting gouged a bit too much.

Georgia State doesn’t have a pass rush, but Georgia Southern really doesn’t generate pressure. Give QB Darren Grainger time and he’ll produce.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This should be fun.

Both offenses know how to get the party moving, and both defenses are more than happy to keep the drinks cold.

Georgia State played well in the 0-4 start but turnovers in a few games, lots of penalties in others, and key misfires did it in. At home the running game will get off the bus with 200 yards, there won’t be enough turnovers to matter, and …

Georgia Southern PK Alex Raynor hasn’t missed a kick all year. He won’t in the final seconds in this, either.

Army vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Panthers are better than their record.

Okay, you are what your record says you are, and the 42-41 home loss to Charlotte was inexcusable, but losses to South Carolina, North Carolina, and Coastal Carolina were all decent, forgivable, and somewhat competitive.

The downfield passing game has been there. and it’s working partly because the line is giving Darren Grainger time to operate. The running game was stuffed by Coastal Carolina, but it was strong in the other three games, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Army Will Win

Blah, blah, blah … can Georgia State stop the Army running game?

Sort of, but not really.

The Panthers don’t generate much pressure, and while that’s not the worst thing in the world against the Army style of offense, they give up rushing yards in chunks.

Coastal Carolina was able to run well, and now it’s Army’s turn to be Army.

Navy was able to beat East Carolina by connecting on a few downfield throws, and Air Force can wing it when needed. Army threw it 18 times against UTSA when the ground attack didn’t roll like normal, but against Villanova …

One pass, it didn’t connect. And why? 472 rushing yards and six scores in the 49-10 win. And then there’s the …

Time of possession.

That’s the problem.

Georgia State might be playing better, but it doesn’t do much to run the clock and grind in any way. That’s partly why it’s the worst team in the country in time of possession, holding the ball for just under 24 minutes per game.

Army? It’s not nearly the ball control powerhouse it normally is, but it will be this Saturday.

Coastal Carolina vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Where’s it all going wrong for Georgia State?

This is a veteran team that was supposed to be solid. Losing to South Carolina and North Carolina weren’t any big deal, but dropping the 42-41 home game to a struggling Charlotte squad was disastrous.

The Panthers are rolling up the yards, but they’re not playing a lick of defense, there hasn’t been a penalty they don’t seem to enjoy committing, and …

Time of possession. If you can’t control the clock, you can’t get by Coastal Carolina. Ask Army how that works.

Georgia State is holding the ball for just over 25 minutes per game. That equals death against a Coastal Carolina offense that rolls when it’s able to hit the third down conversions. However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Chanticleers are scuffling a bit.

They shocked Army 38-28 to open the season, but needed everything in the bag to get by Gardner-Webb and last week had to work too much to get by Buffalo. And what’s been the big problem?

Turnovers. The defense has forced nine over the last two games, but the six given away made life difficult.

Gardner-Webb threw at will, Buffalo was able to stay alive on the takeaways, and Georgia State needs all of that.

The Panther ground game has been fantastic, the big plays were there, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Coastal Carolina is just too efficient.

As rough as things have been over the 3-0 start, the Chanticleer run defense – even against Army – has been outstanding.

That’s good, but Grayson McCall and the passing game continue to be among the nation’s most effective, and the Panther secondary hasn’t appreciably improved since getting hit for over 400 yards and five touchdowns by Charlotte’s Chris Reynolds last week.

This is going to be a wild, fun game to get the college football weekend going.

Georgia State vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

So what’s going right in this tough 0-3 start?

The passing game hasn’t been bad.

Xavier Williams might not be Chris Reynolds – the injured starter – when it comes to his accuracy, but he’s been able to put up enough yards to at least keep things moving.

The offense isn’t killing itself with a slew of mistakes – there’s been just one turnover so far – and the defense should get a break, at least in the secondary.

The Panthers haven’t been able to get much of anything going through the air. The passing game wasn’t miserable against North Carolina, but it crashed in the opener against South Carolina.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Georgia State running game is about to go off.

Charlotte is dead last in the nation in total defense, and it’s not like it faced a bunch of killers.

Maryland has an offense – it rolled for over 600 yards – but Florida Atlantic and William & Mary were both able to do whatever they wanted.

The 49ers are dead last in the nation in passing efficiency defense, dead last in total defense, and it’s having a nightmare of a time against the run.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State will finally get to get this 2022 season going.

Charlotte has good parts, but it hasn’t been able to get them all going yet offensively. The defense hasn’t been remotely close so far, and the Panther attack will take advantage with a balanced day including the first 200-yard passing day of the season.

North Carolina vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

Let’s just say the North Carolina offense has been a little slow to get its 2022 season going.

It got ripped to shreds by Appalachian State in almost all phases of the wild 63-61 win – the Tar Heels allowed 40 points in the fourth quarter – with no prayer against the running game, no hope against the passing attack, and in all allowing 649 yards of total offense.

ASU QB Chase Brice is a fine player, but the UNC defense made him look like Aaron Rodgers.

Georgia State’s defense was fine in the 35-14 loss to South Carolina. It kept Spencer Rattler from getting into a groove, there wasn’t anything happening from the ground game, and it was more of a battle than the final score might indicate.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why North Carolina Will Win

Darren Grainger and the Georgia State passing game struggled.

He completed just 7-of 29 passes for 111 yards with a touchdown and a pick – almost all of the yards came on two big plays – and the scoring pop wasn’t there to close out the good things the running game did.

Again, the North Carolina defense will make things easier, but the other side of the ball should be the problem.

Star Tar Heel WR Josh Downs might not be able to go, but QB Drake Maye has been on fire to start the season, the running game averaged six yards per carry against App State, and the balance and explosion should show up in Atlanta.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Give the South Carolina defense credit for making Georgia State struggle. The Panthers were in it until late in the second half, but couldn’t break through.

At home, it’s going to have a much easier time against a North Carolina team that’s finishing off the road Sun Belt circuit before hosting Notre Dame. The defense will be a wee bit better than it was in Boone, North Carolina, but it’ll have issues with Grainger, and it will need a good second half punch to push past.

It’s not going to be the 59-17 wipeout of last year.

The Tar Heels will win – and will pull away – but once again with this team, it’ll be interesting.

Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

South Carolina vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Panther offensive line is strong enough to be good from the start.

South Carolina’s defensive front might be good, but the Georgia State running game is going to be dangerous, the rotation of backs will be solid, and the receiving corps is among the best in the Sun Belt.

The Gamecocks need their pass rush to step up. They were great in the bowl game, but they struggled to get behind the line over the second half of the season. If they can’t get to Georgia State QB Darren Grainger, look out.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why South Carolina Will Win

Can the Georgia State defense get off the field?

It was okay last season, but there isn’t a ton of bulk up front. The D is once again going to rely on big plays and takeaways to get the job done. Now the Panthers have to deal with an upgraded Gamecock passing game with a fantastic receiving corps for new QB Spencer Rattler to throw to.

South Carolina fans will be looking for explosion out of the upgraded attack, but as long as Rattler is his accurate self, and if the offense is moving on third downs, everything else should work. The Georgia State secondary isn’t good enough to take over if Rattler gets into a groove.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Ask Auburn fans how dangerous Georgia State can be.

The Tigers ended up winning 34-24, but it was a lot closer than that with the Panthers coming way too close to being able pull off the giant road shocker early last year.

Don’t be freaked out if this isn’t a South Carolina annihilation. Georgia State is very good, it’s not going to be fazed by the SEC setting, and the Gamecock offense might not be razor-sharp out of the box. However, the USC lines will take over, the defense will settle in, and Rattler will be great in the second half.

It’ll take a bit, but South Carolina will eventually pull away.

Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022

Georgia State lost the first two games to North Carolina and Army by a combined score of 102-27, and dropped the date to Appalachian State a few weeks later 45-16 for a 1-4 start.

Even with the schedule lightening up … a 7-1 run with a win at Coastal Carolina, a victory over Georgia Southern, and a 51-20 blowout bowl win over Ball State?

That’s how you turn a season and a program around.

Three straight winning seasons, three straight bowl games, four bowl appearances in five years – it’s been a good run for Georgia State as it grows into more and more of a factor in the Sun Belt.

Even with all of the changes and the new programs coming in, the potential is there for this to be the best season yet since becoming a full-on FCS team back in 2013.

Head coach Shawn Elliott has settled in, the team is loaded with good veterans and playmakers, and with the momentum of the second half of last season, this is when it’s fun to be a Georgia State fan.

Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022: Offense

The offense wasn’t always perfect, and it loaded up on a whole slew of mediocre teams, but it got the job done. The running game was fantastic, the passing attack was more effective than the stats, and the parts are there to be far more consistent and far better because …

This might not be the best offensive line in the Sun Belt, but it’s going to be very, very good. Malik Sumter was a Second Team All-Sun Belt center, Pat Bartlett was a Third Team All-Sun Belt guard, and almost everyone else is back with only former star guard Shamarious Gilmore done.

The veteran backs will thrive. Tucker Gregg is a reliable 220-pound occasional workhorse who averaged close to five yards per carry on his 953 yards, fellow senior Jamyest Williams is a quick back who transferred over from South Carolina and ran for 6.7 yards per carry with nine scores, and the rushing production will come from …

Darren Grainger. The 6-4, 202-pound senior wasn’t always accurate, but he threw just four picks with 19 touchdown passes.

Slippery-fast, he took off for 646 yards and three scores – he gave Auburn a hard time and was almost perfect in the bowl win over Ball State. Now he has to be more consistent as a passer. UConn transfer Steven Krajewski is a nice backup option.

The receiving corps is loaded. San Pinckney transferred to Coastal Carolina, but Jamari Thrash led the team with 32 grabs averaging over 14 yards per catch.

TE Aubrey Payne led the team with seven touchdown catches, Ja’Cyais Credle is a 6-4 deep threat, and there are a slew of young options in the mix.

Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022: Defense

The defense has to be better on third downs, the secondary has to be stronger, and it has to rise up against the good offenses on the slate, but the pass rush should once again be terrific, there’s a slew of potential all-star talent, and as long as the takeaways are coming, all should be okay.

The pass rush and big plays come from the linebackers. Jamil Muhammad wasn’t always a starter, but he led the team with six sacks from his set on the outside. The inside combination of Blake Carroll and Jordan Veneziale are tough – they combined for 186 tackles as the team’s top two hitters.

The line isn’t massive, but there’s a good rotation. Again, most of the pass rush comes from the linebackers, but as long as the three in the 3-4 can hold up, and if Thomas Gore can keep getting behind the line from his spot on the nose, this group will do its job.

Safety Antavious Lane has been one of the best defensive backs in the Sun Belt over the last few years, and the corners can tackle.
