Appalachian State vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Appalachian State doesn’t need anything about this game.

It doesn’t matter in terms of bowl games, it’s not about the Sun Belt title – it’s already in the championship next week against Louisiana – and it’s not like this is a big rivalry game.

Of course a ten-win regular season would be nice, but staying healthy for next week is the only goal here.

Georgia Southern might not be running the ball like normal, but there’s a little bit of a passing game, the defensive front can get into the backfield, and ….

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Appalachian State Will Win

How much does Appalachian State care?

If it wants this game, it’s an easy blowout over a team with no consistent offensive punch whatsoever.

Georgia Southern is in a holding pattern until new head man Clay Helton can take over. Until then, the O has to prove it can get past 17 points – it only did that once over the last five games – and Appalachian State could put up 17 in the first quarter.

The Mountaineer offensive line is dominating, the defensive front lives in the backfield, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

There’s the Senior Day aspect to this.

No, Appalachian State isn’t going to pull out all the stops, and it might give up a few late points as it tries to get as many seniors on the field as possible, but it’ll get up fast and have this put away in a hurry.

However, Georgia Southern will keep trying, it’ll keep pushing, and it’ll come up with a few late points.

It’ll be a true go-through-the-motions win.

BYU vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why BYU Will Win

It’s not that the Georgia Southern offense has totally stalled, but it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to.

This is a running team that’s been able to bring in the passing attack enough to balance things out, and it all worked against Texas State last week. However, the ground game that ripped it up over the first half of the season isn’t getting the job done – it failed to get to 170 yards in four of the last five games, and now it goes against a BYU run defense that’s rested and good.

It allowed under 100 yards in two of the last three games and gives up 146 yards or fewer on the year.

On the flip side, the Cougar offense has been a machine with over 1,300 yards and 125 points in the last two games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Yeah, that passing game. It has to be good.

Justin Tomlin and Cam Ransom have combined to get things going over the last few games, but no matter what’s happening, the Eagles have to push the downfield plays a bit more and take some chances against the Cougar defense that will give up the occasional big play.

BYU doesn’t do a ton to get into the backfield when it’s not playing the awful teams – the Georgia Southern ground game should get a little time to work, too. There should be a little bit of balance, but …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

BYU will come back from the break roaring – after a quarter.

The running game will get going right away with nothing crazy, but the breakthrough dashes will start coming after a few drives. The defense that started to wear down a bit – at least it did in the 66-49 win over Virginia – will overcome a few early Georgia Southern scores to dominate in the second half.

Georgia Southern vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Can the running game get going again?

The team is playing out the string before getting the Clay Helton era going, but it still has a dangerous enough running game to get going against a Texas State run defense that hasn’t been a rock.

Louisiana and ULM were able to throw well enough to not have to crank up the ground again, but the teams that want to run for 200 yards have been able to do it – the Bobcats are going up well over 400 yards per game overall.

No, the Georgia Southern running game hasn’t been amazing over the last few weeks, but going against Troy, South Alabama, Georgia State, and Coastal Carolina had a whole lot to do with that.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Texas State Will Win

It’s not that Georgia Southern isn’t pushing it – it battled hard against Troy and Georgia State in close games – but it’s having a hard time getting the O going.

Texas State is coming off a nice win over ULM with the passing game doing enough to get by, and it should go off on the Georgia Southern secondary.

No, the running game isn’t doing enough to control games, and it’s not doing enough to help out the beleaguered pass defense that’s getting lit up for close to 300 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Southern won’t be sharp enough.

The Texas State attack will throw well – even though the Eagles held Coastal Carolina to 85 yards last week – and should be able to overcome a few giveaways with enough takeaways of its own to get by.

It won’t be anything beautiful, but it’ll be two wins in a row with a victory in the home finale.

Coastal Carolina vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Clay Helton isn’t there yet.

Georgia Southern has hired the former USC head coach to change around the program, its style, and bring it to the forefront of an improved Sun Belt going forward. For now, it’s still going to be a rough run.

The Eagles aren’t running quite as well as they need to considering it’s their style, but that’s not their biggest issue.

Grayson McCall, it’s time to eat.

The Coastal Carolina quarterback is hitting 73% of his passes averaging over 13 yards per toss with 17 touchdowns and two picks. He’s going to pick apart the nation’s worst pass defense that allowed over 400 yards to South Alabama a few weeks ago, has no interceptions outside of the four it came up with against Arkansas State, and will have an impossible time getting a third down stop.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

What’s been Coastal Carolina’s issue over the last two games?

It lost to Appalachian State because it couldn’t establish the run. It had a hard time against Troy because the defense had a mediocre day.

Georgia Southern has to do what it does, but at a higher level. It can’t have a mediocre day on the ground – it’s other 300 yards or forget it.

Coastal Carolina has yet to allow more than 228, but the offense has to find a groove right away all while the defense has to somehow takeaway McCall’s options when he gets on the move.

The Eagles have to own outside of the hashmarks.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a rocky two games for the Chanticleers, but that’s all about to change.

They’re going to roll at will on the way to a big first half – McCall will put up massive numbers – and they’ll coast in from there while hoping Appalachian State somehow slips against Arkansas State.

Georgia State vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The passing game has been on as part of an offense that’s kicked it all into high gear.

The running game has been terrific over the last five games – hitting 267 yards or more in four of the last five – but Darren Grainger has thrown for 430 yards and six touchdowns with no picks in the last two wins.

Georgia Southern has been better with the passing attack, but that’s because it hasn’t been strong enough at its day job. When the running game is rolling, everything is fine. However, its only two wins came when tearing off 365 yards or more – with over 500 on Arkansas State – and it’s 0-5 when it doesn’t.

The Georgia State defense hasn’t allowed more than 166 rushing yards in any of the last five games and hasn’t allowed more than 258 all year – Army got the one big yardage day. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The Eagles absolutely have to run and keep running and keep running some more to try shortening the game and controlling the clock.

Georgia State’s passing attack really has been better, and that’s an issue – Georgia Southern has the nation’s worst pass defense. However, the Panthers don’t control the clock – the idea of the attack is to go, go, go – and the passing game isn’t all that efficient.

The Eagles don’t have a turnover problem, they should be able to hold the ball for close to 34 minutes, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a good rivalry game that often defies logic and reason, but Georgia State should be able to bomb at will on the beleaguered Georgia Southern secondary.

The Eagles have allowed 330 passing yards or more in five of the seven games and gave up way over 200 in the other two. Even so, for the first time all year Georgia State will play in a relatively tight game – again, rivalry.

Georgia Southern vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The South Alabama offense has been fine over the last few games, but it hasn’t been enough in tight losses to Louisiana and Texas State. The problem?

The run defense.

Great over the first three games, the Jaguar D gave up 225 yards on the ground to the Ragin’ Cajuns and 212 to the Bobcats – those were the only two times the program allowed more than 200 on the year.

Overall the defense has been great, but if the Georgia Southern ground game is in a groove, forget it.

The Eagle couldn’t get going against Troy and still almost pulled it out in a 27-24 loss. However, it’s 2-0 when it gets over 300 yards with its dynamic ground game, and …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why South Alabama Will Win

Georgia Southern isn’t getting to three bills on this USA D.

The Eagles are a bit more versatile than normal, but the lack of efficiency with the passing game, the inability to get moving on third downs, and a defense that’s giving up yards in chunks is just a part of the puzzle.

It’ll take a massive performance by the ground game, but South Alabama is No. 1 in the nation in third down stops, the line isn’t bad at getting into the backfield, and the offense is able to move just enough to control the time of possession.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

We’re not exactly talking about the Georgia D here, but South Alabama should be strong enough on the defensive front to keep the Eagles from getting their version of the ground attack moving.

It comes down to turnovers. The Jaguars are great at taking the ball away, but the three giveaways were deadly against a Texas State team they should’ve taken down – they lost 33-31 last week.

Georgia Southern doesn’t come up enough big plays on defense to matter.

Georgia Southern Eagles College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense is going to keep on doing what it does, but it’s going to do it with a slew of new key parts. The Eagle running game should continue to be among the nation’s most effective – finishing fifth in the nation for an offense that averaged 371 yards and 27 points per game – with eight starters back. However …

The quarterback situation will take on a different look. Longtime star Shai Werts is off to Louisville to be a receiver and part-time package option under center. Justin Tomlin got in a little work last season, but Georgia Tech transfer James Graham is the right fit. He’s a bigger version of Werts who know how to run an option attack, but he missed time late in spring football with a personal issue.

Werts led the team in rushing, but Graham is a terrific runner and backs JD King and Logan Wright return after they both hit the 600-yard mark and combined for nine scores. On the way is Amare Jones, who ran for close to 1,000 yards at Tulane.

With four of the five offensive linemen returning – senior guard Aaron Dowdell is the best of the bunch – the ground attack that averaged 267 yards per game will keep on going.

The passing game is along for the ride, but it’s great at coming up with big plays when catching teams stacking up against the run. Leading target Malik Murray is gone, but he only caught 21 passes.

Slot receiver Khaleb Hood is back after finishing second on the team with 15 grabs for 224 yards, Beau Johnson is a veteran tight end, and Emil Smith has the size and deep speed to become a factor.

Florida hires former UGA analyst, Georgia Southern head coach

The Florida Gators have hired former Georgia Southern head coach Tyson Summers to be defensive analyst

The Florida Gators have hired former Georgia Southern head coach Tyson Summers to be defensive analyst. Summers will coach under Dan Mullen. and work with Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham to try to improve the Gators’ defense.

Florida’s defense could not stop Oklahoma or Alabama in their two last games of the 2020-2021 college football season.

Tyson Summers previously coached at the University of Georgia in 2018 and in 2005. Summers served as a defensive quality control coach during his most recent stop in Athens.

Tyson Summers worked at Georgia following his brief stint with Georgia Southern from 2016-2017. During his time with the Eagles, he went 5-13. Summers was fired midway through the 2017 campaign following a winless start to the season.

Before coming to Florida, Tyson Summers served as the defensive coordinator for the Colorado Buffaloes. Summers followed Mel Tucker to Colorado and coached there from 2019-2020 without having particularly impressive results.

Tyson Summers did help Colorado get off the field on third down last season. The Buffaloes held opponents to the No. 13 worst third down conversion rate in the country. Both Florida and Colorado allowed over 30 points per game last year.
