49ers injury update: SS Talanoa Hufanga out with torn wrist ligaments

Talanoa Hufanga has a wrist injury that will cause him to miss time.

The San Francisco 49ers will once again have to navigate life without former All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday told reporters in a press conference that Hufanga has torn ligaments in his wrist and will miss about a month, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Hufanga injured his wrist in the first half of the 49ers’ Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He left to the locker room and was quickly ruled out – an indication that the injury might be at least semi-serious.

It’s been a rough go for the 2022 All-Pro over the last couple of years. He tore his ACL in Week 11 last season and wasn’t able to return during training camp. He wound up missing the 49ers’ first two games this season.

Hufanga made it through his Week 3 debut healthy, but rolled his ankle in practice in the lead-up to Week 4 and wasn’t able to play in the team’s win over the New England Patriots. He returned in Week 5 where he hurt his wrist early.

Now he’ll miss a month, which could mean he’s out only three games. The 49ers face the Seahawks on Thursday, then host the Chiefs on Oct. 20 and the Cowboys on Oct. 27. Then they have a bye week and return on Nov. 10 against the Buccaneers in Tampa, which would be the earliest he’s able to come back.

In the meantime it’s likely that rookie Malik Mustapha will fill in as the starter after snagging that job away from veteran George Odum. Odum was the starter throughout camp and in the first two weeks. Mustapha took all the defensive snaps for San Francisco after Hufanga’s Week 5 injury.

49ers rookie has officially jumped up depth chart after earning Week 4 start

The 49ers had a new starter on Sunday, an indicator that their depth chart has changed.

The San Francisco 49ers’ blowout win over the New England Patriots in Week 4 began with an interesting wrinkle.

Strong safety Talanoa Hufanga was ruled out of the contest with an ankle injury he suffered in Thursday’s practice. That opened the door for a new starter to jump into that role.

For the first two weeks it was veteran George Odum in the starting spot while Hufanga finished his recovery from an ACL tear he suffered last season. This week was different.

With Hufanga nursing an ankle issue, the 49ers turned to rookie fourth-round pick Malik Mustapha as their starter.

“Yeah, we thought he was ready for it,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said in a press conference after the game. “When him and (Odum) G.O. were going, we started rotating him a little, I think the second week. He’s been doing awesome in practice. We started to mix him in there in game two. I think (Hufanga) Huf came back in game three, so we didn’t need to do it. But when we found out Huf couldn’t play today, we knew he was next man up.”

Mustapha rotated in and actually out-snapped Odum in Week 2, but he didn’t see much action in Week 3.

In Week 4 he was the strong safety, an indicator that he’s eclipsed Odum on the depth chart and has firmly grasped the No. 3 safety spot where the club will turn to him if there’s an injury. They may also start sprinkling in some three-safety looks where Mustapha is on the field with Hufanga and Ji’Ayir Brown.

For now he’s steadily climbing the depth chart. Barring a major injury he’ll be the No. 3 safety the rest of this year, but his rise bodes well for his chances to snag a starting job in 2025.

49ers’ George Odum comes up with clutch PBU to force FG vs. Vikings

George Odum’s clutch pass breakup helped the 49ers force a field goal in the red zone against the Vikings.

The first domino to fall between the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings in Week 2 came on a fourth-down punt. 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky had his punt blocked with under five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Despite the Vikings opening the drive just outside the red zone, the 49ers defense stood strong. With the Vikings threatening on third-and-goal, Sam Darnold fired a pass to the back of the end zone for third-year wideout Jalen Nailor.

However, special teams ace George Odum was able to get his hand in a Darnold and Nailors window for a clutch pass breakup. Following Odum’s timely PBU, the Vikings were forced to settle for a field goal.

49ers, George Odum agree to 2-year deal worth up to $10 million

The 49ers are bringing back special teams ace George Odum with a 2-year deal

The San Francisco 49ers are retaining one of their key special teams players for the next two years. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the 49ers are re-signing George Odum to a two-year deal worth up to $10 million.

The contract makes Odum the highest-paid core special teams player in the NFL, so it’s a big raise for the six-year veteran. He just wrapped up his second season with the 49ers after four years with the Colts, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2022.

Though he only played 75 defensive snaps in the last two seasons, he does have one interception (2022). He’s also played 541 special teams snaps since 2022 and has 34 total tackles in that span.

Only three former Colts playing in Super Bowl LVIII

A trio of former Colts are in Super Bowl LVIII.

The 2023 season is officially set to come to an end Sunday as the San Francisco 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium.

Only three former Indianapolis Colts players will be playing in the biggest game of the season, all of which are on the 49ers sideline.

Here’s a look at the three former Colts players participating in Super Bowl LVIII:

49ers S George Odum has torn biceps, out 2-4 months

It’s confirmed: George Odum tore his biceps.

The 49ers secondary is taking another significant hit. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Friday reported safety George Odum suffered a torn biceps against the Seahawks on Thanksgiving. The injury will keep him out two-to-four months, which could end his season. A two-month recovery would bring him back in time for a deep playoff run. The team later confirmed the injury.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan after Thursday’s game said the team feared a substantial injury for Odum, but the injury wasn’t confirmed immediately after the game.

Odum has been a special teams stalwart for the 49ers since joining the team last season. He was also their only depth at safety behind Ji’Ayir Brown and Tashaun Gipson. It would be a pretty big surprise if San Francisco didn’t add another safety to the 53-man roster with Talanoa Hufanga already sidelined for the season.

Second-year undrafted free agent Tayler Hawkins is the internal option on the practice squad. They could opt to hit the free agent market as well.

49ers injury update: George Odum suffers possible season-ending biceps injury vs. Seahawks

It sounds like 49ers S George Odum could be out for the season.

The injury list from the 49ers win over the Seahawks on Thursday wasn’t long, but it sounds like safety George Odum suffered a significant biceps injury.

Odum was quickly ruled out of Thursday’s game after getting hurt covering a punt. Head coach Kyle Shanahan in his postgame press conference said Odum most likely tore his biceps, which would likely be a season-ending injury.

This is the second blow to the 49ers’ secondary in as many weeks. Talanoa Hufanga is already on IR with an ACL tear. Now Odum’s season could be done, leaving San Francisco with only veteran Tashaun Gipson and rookie Ji’Ayir Brown in its safety room.

Shanahan also said tight end Charlie Woerner was evaluated for a concussion and cleared.

Vikings vs. 49ers initial injury report

The 49ers have five starters not practicing with only Ezra Cleveland fully sitting out for the Vikings

Evans looks to have fully healed from his knee injury, but an oblique isn’t something to mess with.

Jones is a new addition with a shoulder injury. If he can’t go, Andre Carter II will likely be active.

Nailor began his practice window on Wednesday and it appears that the Vikings will be ramping him up slowly.

The 49ers have multiple players on their injury report, including five starters not practicing.
