49ers LB Dre Greenlaw eyeing Week 1 return after Achilles tear

It looks like Dre Greenlaw will be able to return at some point this season, with the LB hoping for Week 1. John Lynch is eyeing something later than that.

49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered an Achilles tear in the Super Bowl that put question marks around his availability for the 2024 season. Now the LB is eyeing a Week 1 return according to general manager John Lynch. Lynch is less optimistic about the LB’s quick return.

While Greenlaw is hopeful to be back in the lineup for the 49ers in early September, Lynch is leaning more toward Greenlaw starting the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

If Greenlaw does start the regular season on the PUP list he won’t be able to practice, but he’d be eligible to return after four weeks. The PUP three-week practice window works the same as the IR practice window. He’d have 21 days from the time the window is opened to ramp up and get in football shape before the team would be required to activate him or shut him down for the year.

Even if Greenlaw returns by Week 5 or 6 it would be a huge boost for the 49ers’ defense. They added LB De’Vondre Campbell this offseason to likely fill in for Greenlaw. Whether Greenlaw takes back his starting Will LB spot or jumps in as an overqualified Sam LB will be determined down the line, but the fact he’d be ready to play at all is surely welcome news for Greenlaw and the 49ers following the timing of such a devastating injury.

49ers injury update: WR Deebo Samuel feeling better, won’t practice to begin week

Deebo Samuel is feeling better, but he still isn’t practicing Wednesday.

The 49ers had good and bad news on injured wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday in a press conference before practice told reporters Samuel is feeling better, but the do-everything WR still isn’t in line to practice to begin the week leading up to the NFC championship game.

Samuel hurt his shoulder early in the 49ers’ divisional playoff win over the Packers. He avoided a fracture like the one he sustained in Week 6 against the Browns, but there’s still a question mark over his availability for Sunday’s NFC title game vs. the Lions.

Shanahan said there are no additional absences for San Francisco on Wednesday.

Any progress is a plus for Samuel at this point, but it seems unlikely we’ll have certainty on his status until kickoff.

The 49ers and Lions kickoff Sunday at 3:30pm Pacific Time from Levi’s Stadium.

Good news for 49ers as DT Javon Hargrave returns to practice

Some good news for the #49ers on the injury front:

The 49ers on Friday got some much-needed positive injury news ahead of their Week 16 bout with the Baltimore Ravens.

Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave was back in practice after missing all of Week 15 and the first session of Week 16. It was only a limited participation for him, but injuries have piled up at DT so getting even a limited practice from Hargrave is significant for the 49ers and could be a sign that he’s angling toward playing Monday night.

Here’s the full participation report from Friday:

49ers injury update: LT Trent Williams practices for 1st time since Week 6

Trent Williams was back at practice for the #49ers on Thursday:

There was a welcome sight on the field for the 49ers when they began Thursday’s practice. Left tackle Trent Williams was in uniform and participating for the first time since sustaining an ankle injury in Week 6 against the Browns.

Williams finished out the Week 6 contest, but missed all of Weeks 7 and 8. Head coach Kyle Shanahan’s explanation of Williams’ injury on Wednesday didn’t breed a ton of confidence that the star left tackle would be ready to play Sunday in Jacksonville.

“Just when he’s got a lot of history in there with stuff,” Shanahan said. “It didn’t show up as a high (ankle sprain) or anything like that, but when you’ve had that over your career, there’s a number of things that with how it’s taking longer than expected to heal, it’s more than a low.”

That made Williams’ return for Thursday’s session all the more encouraging, and it certainly improves his chances of playing Week 10.

Here’s the full practice participation report:

49ers practice report: 3 key 49ers remain out

The #49ers didn’t get much good news in Friday’s practice report:

The 49ers on Friday released their second practice participation report of the week. With the Monday night game, everything gets pushed back one day, so the Friday report is like a Thursday report in a normal week. There’ll be an official status report for Monday night released Saturday.

There were two changes from Thursday to Friday,  but three key 49ers remain out of practice.

Here’s the participation report from Friday’s session:

49ers hopeful Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle return this season

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters he is “holding out hope” for Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle to return this season.

[jwplayer boGiTYJc-ThvAeFxT]

In his video conference with reporters Monday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed hope that starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and star tight end George Kittle could return before the end of the season. However, he was unwilling to make any commitment.

Yeah, I’m holding out hope for Jimmy for the last couple of weeks, same with Kittle. I think they’re in a similar boat with that and that’s not guaranteed. It’s how they react over here the next couple of weeks, but they’re just starting to get into where they can get on the field and not with us, but on their own and do some stuff. That’s hopefully going to be the last couple of weeks, whether it’s two games or one game or none.

Garoppolo has been dealing with a severely sprained ankle he suffered in the 49ers second game of the season. While he attempted to play through the injury, he suffered another high ankle sprain in a Week 7 loss to the Seahawks. Kittle fractured his right foot that same week.

The initial timeline on a return for Garoppolo was four-to-six weeks per Shanahan. Kittle’s was reported as an eight-week recovery time.

In his 6 starts this season, Garoppolo has completed 67.4% of his passes for 1,096 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions. Kittle has hauled in 37 receptions for 474 yards and 2 touchdowns in 6 games.

DL Ronald Blair, C Weston Richburg unlikely to return this season

San Francisco 49ers players Ronald Blair and Weston Richburg suffered setbacks in their injury recoveries and are probably out for the season.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday revealed in a video conference with reporters that defensive lineman Ronald Blair and center Weston Richburg are probably out for the season due to setbacks in their respective recoveries. Richburg and Blair have spent the entirety of the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

The 49ers had been optimistic that Blair and/or Richburg could return at some point this season, suggesting Weeks 10-12 were a target for their return just over a month ago. However, that is clearly no longer the case.

Blair suffered a torn ACL over a year ago in the 49ers 27-24 Week 10 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks. In 9 games last season, Blair recorded 21 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks. A solid rotational defensive lineman since he was drafted in the 5th round of the 2016 draft, the 49ers depleted defensive line could have used his reinforcement.

Richburg suffered a torn patellar tendon in the 49ers 48-46 win against the New Orleans Saints last season. He has not played since. Signed to a 5-year, $47.5 million contract to be the team’s starting center before 2018, Richburg has been a stabilizing force on the offensive line when healthy but has been sorely missed this season.

49ers will be without both starting safeties vs. Patriots

San Francisco 49ers will be without Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward vs. the New England Patriots.

The 49ers secondary on Friday suffered a pair of major blows when both starters, Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward were ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Patriots. Their absence means four of San Francisco’s Week 1 starters in the back end wont be available vs. New England.

Tartt injured his groin during the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Rams. He was a non-participant in practice all week.

Ward is more of a mystery. He showed up on Friday’s practice report as a non-participant with a quad injury after practicing in full the first two days. The quad injury was bad enough for the team to rule him out for Sunday. It’s the first time Ward has missed a game due to injury since he returned from a preseason broken collarbone in Week 5 last year.

Tartt and Ward join cornerback Richard Sherman and nickel corner K’Waun Williams among starters in the secondary who won’t be available Sunday.

Here’s the full Week 7 injury report:

Out

SS Jaquiski Tartt (groin)

FS Jimmie Ward (quad)

RB Raheem Mostert (knee)

LB Kwon Alexander (ankle)

Questionable

OT Trent Williams (ankle)

RB Jeff Wilson Jr. (calf)

49ers missing 3 key offensive players to open Week 1 practices

49ers WRs Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk missed Monday’s practice prior to Week 1.

The 49ers on Monday had their first practice of the week leading up to their season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. While no official injury report is due until Wednesday, there were some notable names absent early in the team’s session that’s open to reporters. There were also some key players back in action after missing the last portion of training camp.

Not on hand according to reporters on site in Santa Clara were wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, along with center Ben Garland. Defensive ends Dee Ford and Nick Bosa, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk were all participating.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch haven’t necessarily been optimistic about Samuel’s chances of playing in the opener, but they’ve also not ruled him out entirely. He suffered a Jones fracture in June that had a 12-16 week reported timetable for return. Playing Sunday would put the second-year receiver on track to land at the front end of that timeline. His lack of participation Monday doesn’t have a significant impact on whether he’ll play Sunday. A better indicator will come Wednesday after an off day Tuesday.

Aiyuk sustained a mild hamstring strain during camp and was labeled as week-to-week. Shanahan had similar reservations about the rookie’s return, saying the team was hopeful they’d have him for the start of the regular season, but never stated outright he’d return. The training staff will probably aim to be cautious with a hamstring injury for a young player.

The Garland absence isn’t a huge surprise. Shanahan was hopeful for his return, but as with Aiyuk and Samuel, tempered the expectations. Garland suffered an ankle injury in camp, but the team’s roster construction with Hroniss Grasu’s release indicates at least some optimism that he’ll be available. If not, Grasu would likely come off the practice squad.

Bosa, Ford and Juszczyk all sat out time toward the end of camp with minor ailments. It sounded during camp like it was purely precautionary with the goal of having all three healthy for the start of the season. Their presence at Monday’s practice is a good sign they’ll be ready to go by kickoff.

The 49ers open against the Cardinals on Sunday in Levi’s Stadium at 1:25pm Pacific Time.

Report: Deebo Samuel to come off Non-Football Injury list

Deebo Samuel will come off the Non-Football Injury list and be available for the 49ers in Week 1.

The 49ers finally got some good news on the wide receiver injury front. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported Deebo Samuel will come off the Non-Football Injury list and be on the team’s active roster following Saturday’s final cuts. This will allow Samuel to play Week 1 vs. Arizona.

Samuel suffered a Jones fracture in his left foot during offseason workouts and didn’t participate in training camp while sitting on the NFI.

The 49ers didn’t rush Samuel back presumably because they didn’t want him to re-aggravate his foot injury. Conditioning could also be a factor since a foot injury keeps him from staying in football shape during his rehab.

Having Samuel off the NFI doesn’t necessarily guarantee he’ll play vs. the Cardinals in the season opener. He’ll just be on the active roster. If the team decides he needs another week before going at 100 percent — they can make him inactive for the first week. Keeping him on NFI would’ve forced the 49ers to sideline him for at least six weeks.

San Francisco doesn’t have a ton of proven options at receiver, so having Samuel healthy and available early in the year is an important development.
