ACC players taken in the 2023 NBA draft

Have long-term hopes for any of these players?

It’s no secret that the ACC is in a rough spot right now. Over the past couple of years, the conference’s quality of play has suffered, and the NCAA Tournament selection committee has taken notice, giving the power conference only four at-large bids in each of the past two years.

Now, we’re seeing the lull carry over to the NBA draft. A conference that typically sees one of its own go off the board within the first four picks had to wait until the 12th pick in 2023. In fact, that was the only lottery pick for the conference.

So it stands to reason that there isn’t a lot of hope for this ACC class of incoming NBA players, but stranger things have happened. As we just saw with the champion Denver Nuggets, even a diamond in the rough on draft night can turn into a franchise-altering player. It could happen again with one of these players:

3 college hoops underdogs with the best chances at Top-25 upsets on opening day

These double-digit underdogs have long odds, but as good a chance as any.

Opening day of the college basketball season is filled with a bunch of paper mismatches, as larger programs hope to get their seasons off on the right foot before tougher games down the road.

Just once glance at the slate of games Monday and the betting spreads show nothing but double-digit home favorites across the board. Some — like Baylor (-44.5) against Mississippi Valley State — are larger than others — Villanova (-15.5) against La Salle.

But they’re going to play these games for a reason.

Below is a look at my top three underdogs with a chance to upset a top 25 team on Monday.

Notre Dame heading to Bahamas for Thanksgiving weekend tournament

How would you like to spend Thanksgiving with the women’s basketball team?

We don’t know what will happen to Notre Dame this season. What we do know is the team will enjoy Thanksgiving dinner in a tropical paradise. That’s because the Irish are one of six programs to be invited to the 20th edition of the Goombay Splash in Bimini, Bahamas. The tournament begins Nov. 24, this year’s date for Thanksgiving, and ends Nov. 26 with each team getting either two or three games along the way.

The Irish’s first game will be played Thanksgiving against American, a first-time opponent. Arizona State awaits both teams regardless of the result because it plays the loser of the Thanksgiving game the next day and the winner the day after. George Mason and LSU face each other in the Thanksgiving game to determine who will play on which day.

If you have to be away from your family during a major holiday, it’s hard to pick against the Bahamas as a location. Don’t believe me? Let’s go back a few years and watch Central Michigan’s reaction to going to the inaugural Bahamas Bowl, which was held on Christmas Eve:

Fordham vs George Mason Game Preview, Atlantic 10 Tournament

Why Fordham Will Win

The Rams aren’t going to come out hand hang 85 on the board unless everything goes right, but they’re going to take plenty of threes, do a good job at guarding on the outside, and they’re going to come up with plenty of rebounds.

They do have a bit of a scoring punch – they actually did hang 85 on UMass a few days ago – and there won’t be too much of a concern with the George Mason defense that doesn’t force mistakes and hasn’t been anything special to close out the regular season.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why George Mason Will Win

The Patriots will make a ton of threes.

They might not have the defense to hold up on the inside, and they tend to lose when they have to push the offense, but they’ve hit 21 threes over the last two games and will keep on bombing away throughout.

They lost the first game to Fordham 50-47 on the road, but they were way off from outside and never got to the free throw line. With this team, though, it’s all about the threes.

Hit ten of them, and good things happen. But …

Fordham vs George Mason: What’s Going To Happen

Duh, of course teams do well when they make a whole lot of threes, but George Mason is 9-5 when it hits ten or more threes and 5-10 when it doesn’t.

Fordham has allowed just three teams to hit double-digit threes.

Notre Dame 15 Years Tournament: No. 3 Seed – 2007-08 Irish

We round out our profiles for the Notre Dame 15 Years Tournament field with a look at the 2007-08 Irish.

We round out our profiles for the Notre Dame 15 Years Tournament field with a look at the 2007-08 Irish. They went 10-2 in nonconference play with their only two losses coming in the Paradise Jam Tournament just before Thanksgiving. The goodness continued during a 14-4 Big East showing, which tied them for second in the conference and left them one game back for the title. They also ran the table for the conference home schedule, becoming the first Big East team to do so in back-to-back years, and it helped Mike Brey defend his conference coach of the year award.

The Irish were one-and-done in the Big East tournament, but they still earned a fifth seed in the NCAA tourney. At that time, they were their season-high ranking of 14th. March Madness didn’t go how they had hoped as they cruised over George Mason in the first round before getting blown out by Washington State in the second. They ultimately finished 15th in the final poll.

Luke Harangody was named Big East Player of the Year after averaging a double-double of 20.4 points and 10.6 rebounds a game. Kyle McAlarney joined Harangody on the all-conference first team thanks to 15.1 points a game. Rob Kurz averaged 12.5 points and 1.5 blocks a game, and Tory Jackson paced the team in assists with 5.8 a game.

As a team, the Irish ranked eighth nationally in 3-point percentage (.405) and ninth in assists (608).
