Nobody knows what’s going on with George Kittle

It sounds like the 49ers will be without tight end George Kittle for another week.

George Kittle’s availability for the 49ers’ Week 11 showdown with the Cardinals is still up in the air. Maybe.

The star tight end didn’t practice Wednesday after not practicing at all in Week 10 and missing the team’s Monday night loss to the Seahawks. Kittle is dealing with knee and ankle injuries that resulted from a collision on the 49ers’ first offensive snap in Arizona.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday told 49ers reporters during a conference that Kittle was still day-to-day with an uncertain status for Sunday.

“Kittle (is) still in the same boat,” Shanahan said. “Hopeful for (him) this week, but still pretty similar to last week.”

Kittle didn’t practice leading up to the Seahawks game and was officially listed as ‘doubtful’ on the injury report. There was some optimism during the week that he’d be able to play though and miss only one game.

Things got confusing after Wednesday’s practice when Shanahan went on a conference call with Cardinals reporters.

The 49ers head coach told that group of reporters “we won’t have Kittle.” He didn’t mention any change in Kittle’s status in a press conference with 49ers reporters a short time before that.

It appears that Shanahan jumped the gun on divulging the truth about Kittle’s status for Week 11. It didn’t stop with his conference call though. The 49ers clarified what the coach meant when he said the team would be without its top tight end for the second consecutive week.

So he is not, NOT playing. But he’s also unlikely to play.

It was a roller coaster, but it appears that we’ve landed at the start. The 49ers are worried Kittle won’t play, and are preparing again to be without him, but his history of playing through pain and overcoming injuries is keeping them from publicly ruling him out. Shanahan accidentally did the latter prior to the clarification from the club.

While Kittle isn’t officially out against Arizona, it sounds like a repeat of last week where he neither practices nor plays is on the horizon. We’ll know more Friday when the official injury report comes out.

49ers injury report: Matt Breida, Emmanuel Sanders, George Kittle among 7 DNPs

A look at the first injury report of the week for the Niners.

The San Francisco 49ers, who play the Arizona Cardinals this weekend in Santa Clara, begin Week 11 with a very long injury report. In all, seven players sat out on Wednesday and another five were limited in practice, according to the first injury report of the week.

Did not practice

  • LB Azeez Al-Shaair (concussion)
  • RB Matt Breida (ankle)
  • K Robbie Gould (quad)
  • DT D.J. Jones (groin)
  • TE George Kittle (ankle, knee)
  • WR Emmanuel Sanders (ribs)
  • T Joe Staley (finger)

Staley is out a couple of weeks after finger surgery. Jones has been ruled out. It appears unlikely Kittle will play. Sanders is in a lot of pain now and the others are day-to-day.

Five were limited.

Limited

  • TE Garrett Celek (back)
  • DE Dee Ford (quad)
  • RB Raheem Mostert (knee)
  • TE Levine Toilolo (groin)
  • CB Ahkello Witherspoon (foot, quad)

49ers not planning on TE George Kittle vs. Cardinals [update]

He caught six passes for 79 yards and a touchdown when the two teams played one another two weeks ago.

The Arizona Cardinals will face the San Francisco 49ers this weekend on the road. It is the second time in three weeks they will face one another.

When they played the last time, tight end George Kittle was productive, catching six passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals will not have to worry about him in Week 11.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Kittle will not play in Week 11 against the Cardinals, tweeted Darren Urban from the Cardinals official team site.

According to the Sacramento Bee’s Chris Biderman, Shanahan told Arizona media in a conference call they “won’t have Kittle” on Sunday.

However, also according to Biderman, the team made a correction. A team representative told Biderman Shanahan misspoke on the call. Kittle is unlikely to play but has not been ruled out. Shanahan has to plan on the game without Kittle but anything could happen between now and the end of the week.

The 49ers already will be without starting left tackle Joe Staley and could be without receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

Pass rusher Ronald Blair is done for the season after tearing his ACL, while starting defensive tackle D.J. Jones will miss this week as well.

The Cardinals have given up the most receiving yards and touchdown to tight ends this season. Playing the 49ers without Kittle will be a huge break.

It doesn’t mean the Cardinals will win, but it makes the possibility more likely.

49ers are walking wounded, could be without 6 starters against Cardinals

The Cardinals might get a severely depleted 49ers team this weekend.

The Arizona Cardinals’ next game is on the road against the 8-1 San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers are dealing with a number of injuries and the Cardinals might get several breaks with the players who will and might miss the game.

Although the first injury report of the week will not come out until Wednesday, there are enough injured players to get an idea about today.

They already are without linebacker Kwon Alexander, who exited the game against the Cardinals and suffered a season-ending torn pectoral.

Read to find out more about the players the 49ers could be without when they face the Cardinals for the second time in three weeks.

LT Joe Staley

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Staley missed the game against the Cardinals, coming back from a fractured leg. In his first game back on Monday against the Seattle Seahawks, he suffered a fractured and dislocated finger. It could require surgery, which would mean missing a couple of weeks. It appears he will miss this week’s game against the Cardinals.

List of injured 49ers grows, Ronald Blair out for season

The 49ers took a beating Monday night against the Seahawks.

The 49ers suffered more losses than the one on the scoreboard Monday night. Their list of injured players grew following the knock-down, drag-out fight with the Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday updated reporters on a conference call about the new ailments affecting the 49ers.

Defensive lineman Ronald Blair, who exited the game in the second half following a sack of Russell Wilson, tore his ACL and is out for the season. There’s no official word on a roster move to replace Blair yet. Jeremiah Valoaga is the only defensive end on the practice squad, but San Francisco could look for alternate solutions on the free agent market as well.

Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders left the game in the second quarter, and was ruled out early in the second half with a rib injury. Shanahan said Sanders is day-to-day with a rib cartilage issue, and his status for Sunday against the Cardinals is up in the air. The 49ers’ passing attack suffered greatly once Sanders exited the game.

Offensive tackle Joe Staley, in his first game since breaking his fibula in Week 2, dislocated his finger and may need surgery that would keep him out a few weeks. His replacement, Justin Skule was inactive Monday night, but could be put back in at left tackle if Staley misses any time.

Defensive tackle DJ Jones also left in the second quarter and was ruled out early in the second half. He’s dealing with a groin injury and is day-to-day according to Shanahan. Jones was having a nice year at defensive tackle, and had a sack Monday night, then injured himself chasing Russell Wilson to the sideline.

NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday morning that running back Matt Breida could also miss time after re-aggravating an ankle injury Monday night. He left in the second half after rushing 10 times for 18 yards. While Breida battled through an ankle injury last year, the 49ers could take precautions to ensure he’s fully healthy before returning and sit him at least against the Cardinals on Sunday.

Shanahan said George Kittle and Robbie Gould both remain day-to-day. Kittle is working through knee and ankle injuries, while Gould is recovering from a quad strain. Their statuses for Week 11 are both unknown.

San Francisco looked like they’d be getting healthy just in time for the most difficult portion of the schedule, but Monday’s game sent them in the opposite direction.

George Kittle officially inactive for 49ers vs. Seahawks

The 49ers won’t have their star tight end in their biggest game of the year.

The 49ers will officially be without their star tight end Monday night against the Seahawks. Tight end George Kittle has officially been ruled out after being given a ‘doubtful’ designation Saturday. He joins kicker Robbie Gould and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon among the inactive starters for San Francisco.

Here’s the full list of inactives for the 49ers:

TE George Kittle
OL Justin Skule
RB Jeff Wilson Jr.
QB C.J. Beathard
DT Jullian Taylor
CB Ahkello Witherspoon
K Robbie Gould

The silver lining in this group is that it doesn’t include Joe Staley, Mike McGlinchey or Kyle Juszczyk. The two starting tackles and starting fullback were instrumental in the 49ers’ dominance on the ground early in the year.

Staley broke his fibula in Week 2, McGlinchey hurt his knee and needed arthroscopic surgery after Week 5, and Juszczyk sprained his MCL in Week 5.

Witherspoon was ‘100 percent healthy’ according to a report from NBC Sports’ Jennifer Lee Chan, but he’s still inactive after being limited in practice all week with foot and quad injuries. He sprained his foot in Week 3, then suffered a setback just as he was getting ready to return.

Gould getting ruled out isn’t a huge surprise. San Francisco braced for that by adding kicker Chase McLaughlin on Wednesday after Gould suffered a quad injury during Tuesday’s bonus practice.

San Francisco survived without their tackles and fullback on offense, now they have to devise a way to win without their most impactful player on that side of the ball.

Here are the Seahawks inactives:

49ers activate TE Garrett Celek, waive CB Dontae Johnson

The 49ers made a pair of tweaks to their roster just in time for Monday night’s game vs. the Seahawks.

The 49ers made a roster move ahead of their Monday night showdown with the Seahawks. They officially activated tight end Garrett Celek off the PUP list, and waived cornerback Dontae Johnson to make room on the roster.

This move suggests two things. First, tight end George Kittle, who was already doubtful with knee and ankle injuries, will probably not play now that Celek is activated. Johnson’s departure is also a good sign for cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who’s been out since Week 3 with a foot injury.

Celek has been on the PUP list since undergoing back surgery during the offseason. His three-week practice window was opened the week leading up to the Seahawks game. San Francisco only needed to only see a week of action from Celek before putting him on the 53-man roster. He’d worked well as the second tight end during head coach Kyle Shanahan’s first two seasons. Ross Dwelley holds that spot now, but having Celek will give the 49ers an additional body to try and adequately replace Kittle’s production.
