Chiefs scouting report: Ohio State Buckeyes DE Jack Sawyer

Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer could be a target for the Kansas City #Chiefs in the 2025 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a few long-term answers at defensive end. Mike Dana signed a contract extension in April to remain with the team through the 2026 season, and George Karlaftis is trending toward earning an extension after his rookie deal expires. The Chiefs are still missing a reliable third option along the edge.

Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer’s development took a massive leap in 2023. He uses a quick first step to get off the line and engage in hand-to-hand combat with the offensive tackle. His active and violent hands generate some knockback on contact.

Sawyer’s pass rush arsenal includes converting speed to power, swims, club-swims, spins, long-arms, rips, and cross-chops. While he knows a large variety of moves, Sawyer’s timing and deployment of his pass rush plan are inconsistent. He lacks elite bend to beat tackles around their outside shoulders consistently but gets low enough to turn the corner at the top of the arc.

Sawyer often relies on countering into the B-gap. He pushes linemen vertically before using his hands and momentum to pry open the B-gap and attack inside. Sawyer also uses inside swim, spin, and club counters, but he telegraphs these moves and makes them too easy to mirror.

Sawyer took his run defense to another level in 2023. He sets the edge well and times his block-shedding to separate from linemen and bring down the ball carrier. Sawyer plays with impressive effort in pursuit and delivers some big hits. His anchor gives out at the point of attack occasionally.

Sawyer and his teammate, J.T. Tuimoloau, form one of college football’s best pass-rush duos. Either defensive end could be in play for the Chiefs in the second round.

Ohio State travels to Eugene to face No. 3 Oregon on Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. CST. Both programs are 5-0 and feature multiple top-100 prospects. Oregon is the first of four ranked Big Ten teams remaining on Ohio State’s schedule.

Chiefs DE George Karlaftis opens up about the Saints offense: ‘We’ll have our hands full’

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis opens up about the New Orleans #Saints offense: ‘We’ll have our hands full’ | @EdEastonJr

The New Orleans Saints feature multiple offensive weapons, which have led to their 2-2 start to the season. They visit Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night to challenge the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs and their much-improved defense.

Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis spoke with reporters on Thursday about his thoughts on the Saints offense ahead of Monday night’s game.

“We’ve played against that coordinator a few times. They have playmakers all over the field. Starting with their quarterback, their alliance has been off to a great start.” said Karlaftis. “Obviously, they’re running back, the receiver, so they’re a great team. The record indicates that, and (given) what they’ve done offensively, we’ll have our hands full. Spags (Steve Spagnuolo) has a great game plan, and we’ll execute it. So I think we’ll be good.”

Karlaftis hit double-digit sacks last season and had earned a solid reputation as a pass rusher and threat on the defensive line. He focused on the next significant factor in the Saints’ offense, running back Alvin Kamara.

“He (Kamara) could do a lot of different stuff, both as a runner and a pass catcher,” said Karlaftis. “We’re gonna have our hands full with him. It’s really just playing team ball and really being disciplined, and each man is playing as 1-11 and executing his assignment.”

The Chiefs’ defense, led by all-pro Chris Jones, has played well late in games, closing things out on a potential opposing comeback drive. The unit hopes to avoid late-game thrillers and have the game well in hand in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs DL Chris Jones stripped of sack after NFL stat correction

#Chiefs DL Chris Jones was none too pleased when the NFL issued a stat correction that stripped him of a sack against the #Bengals.

In a league where every play matters, it should come as no surprise that Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones was displeased when the NFL stripped him of half a sack after a stat correction was issued this week.

Jones, was initially credited with half a sack against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 after combining with George Karlaftis to take down star quarterback Joe Burrow, but now has nothing to show for his performance.

Never one to mince words, Jones took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to tell fans exactly what he thought of the NFL’s latest determination:

In the end, it seems that Karlaftis did the right thing in the wake of his teammate’s disappointment, as Jones would later tweet this update on Wednesday evening:

With some luck, Jones should be able to out-do his Week 2 performance when the Chiefs face the Atlanta Falcons this weekend and come down with at least one sack that the NFL can’t take away from him.

Tamba Hali on coaching Chiefs’ young pass rushers in the offseason

In an interview with KC Sports Network, #Chiefs legend Tamba Hali spoke about working with George Karlaftis and Felix Anudike-Uzomah in the offseason.

Kansas City Chiefs fans get excited when they hear the name Tamba Hali and they should be glad to hear the All-Pro defensive end is still involved with the team in his retirement.

Hali played his entire professional career in Kansas City and has been working with the Chiefs’ newest crop of pass-rushing talent in the offseason.

During an interview with KC Sports Network, Hali described the training he has done with George Karlaftis and Felix Anudike-Uzomah.

In his comments, Hali revealed that Karlaftis was the first to reach out to him to ask for help and that he later involved Anudike-Uzomah in the offseason program.

Judging from his comments, Hali sounded like he was impressed with the young pass rushers and seemed confident in their ability to continue progressing in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense.

Keep your eye on Karlaftis and Anudike-Uzomah during Kansas City’s Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5.

The Kansas City Chiefs players have made it no secret that in between practice sessions at training camp, many are either playing ‘College Football 25’ or tuning into the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Chiefs defensive lineman George Karlaftis caught up with reporters after Friday’s practice to talk about his support of his girlfriend at the Olympic trials recently and the country he is rooting for this summer.

“It was awesome,” Karlaftis said of his partner’s performance at trials in Oregon. “She (Kaia Harris) was at the Olympic trials. She finished ninth, so it was amazing to be able to support your partner like that. It was awesome, it’s a super cool sporting event.”

Karlaftis is known for his furious playing style. Last season, he eclipsed the ten-sack mark for the first time in his young career. Later in his comments to the media, the third-year defender made it clear that he is focused on preparing for the new season at training camp, but has taken pride in watching Greece in this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, France.

“I watched a little bit of the Olympics. I was watching Greece beat up on Australia this morning before we got ready for practice. You’ve got to have a little bit of fun still,” said Karlaftis. “But yeah, it’s been mostly blinders…but I’ll sneak some Greek Olympics here when I can.”

Karlaftis will look to take another step forward in his growth as an anchor on the defensive line and continue his impactful pass rush.

Chiefs DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah reflects on off-season training with Tamba Hali

The expectations are high for defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah heading into his second season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He didn’t play much in his rookie year, but after off-season workouts with a perennial Pro Bowler, he should be ready to make an immediate impact in 2024.

Chiefs legend Tamba Hali has worked with young defensive linemen George Karlaftis and Anudike-Uzomah throughout the offseason, utilizing his wisdom on the young group. Anudike-Uzomah spoke with reporters on Friday after practice about the lessons he’s learned from Hali.

“The motivation with his knowledge of the game and how he had so much success in his years in Kansas City,” said Anudike-Uzomah. “He basically just saw that knowledge on me and just couldn’t help me and George (Karlaftis) get our game better, get-offs, handwork, and stuff like that.”

Anudike-Uzomah took advice from the Chiefs coaching staff before the offseason to work on his fundamentals.

“Talking to some of my coaches was a major thing I had to work on in my offseason,” said Anudike-Uzomah.” So I got to work outside of the Chiefs facility, got to work with Tamba, and just make sure my get-off is straight so I can be ready for the season.”

Veteran Charles Omenihu’s injury recovery process opens the door for more opportunities for Anudike-Uzomah. The former first-round pick is eager to make his mark on defense while putting in the work at training camp.

Chiefs legend Tamba Hali has notably worked with young defensive line standouts George Karlaftis and Felix Anudike-Uzomah throughout the offseason. He released another video montage of his training with the duo, wishing them well ahead of training camp.

“I enjoyed training with George and Felix during the off-season,” Hali posted to his X account. I wish them a safe and healthy season. Go Chiefs!”

The Chiefs Hall of Famer spent his 12-year career in Kansas City, appearing in 177 games (157 starts), the fourth most by any Chiefs defender in team history. He’s proven throughout his career and after retirement to have the secret formula for taking your game to the next level, as he was selected to the Pro Bowl five consecutive seasons from 2011-15 and named to the AP All-Pro second team twice (2011 and 2013).

Chris Jones hilariously roped in Chiefs DE George Karlaftis for his usual crying session during the national anthem

Chris Jones just wanted a shoulder to cry on during the Super Bowl’s national anthem.

By now, Chris Jones is well-known as one of the key cogs during the Kansas City Chiefs’ new dynasty. He’s a defensive wrecking ball who somehow always finds a way to make timely plays and projects as a likely future Hall of Famer. He’s also known for getting very emotional while someone sings the national anthem before Chiefs games. It’s to the point that he sometimes gets memes created out of this routine.

His approach before Super Bowl 58 was no different. While anticipating the national anthem, Jones turned to defensive teammate George Karlaftis, professing that he was about to get “emotional.” Karlaftis thought nothing of it.

In fact, with Jones’ mere suggestion, Karlaftis noted that he was probably about to cry, too!

What a beautiful and, ironically, hilarious exchange between two teammates on the NFL’s best team.
