Two Ohio State redshirt freshmen lose black stripe

Tegra Tshebola and George Fitzpatrick are officially welcomed to the brotherhood! #GoBucks

Black stripe alert! Two redshirt freshmen lost their black stripes this week. Tegra Tshebola and George Fitzpatrick, both offensive linemen, have been welcomed to the brotherhood.

Tshabola was the top-rated lineman in Ohio coming out of Lakota West High School as part of the 2022 class. He saw limited action in his first season as a Buckeye before being redshirted for the remainder of the year.

Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, came from a little farther away. A native of Colorado, Fitzpatrick decided to head east to Columbus. The young man saw time in one game this past season before the decision came to redshirt.

Apparently, Fitzpatrick struggled a little last year according to offensive line coach Justin Frye. “George Fitzpatrick, last year, didn’t know what shoe was left and right and how to tie them,” Frye told reporters. “He got his black stripe off today. He’s playing better, just because he’s another year mature and bigger and stronger.”

Both players are battling for positions on the offensive line after the departures of Paris Johnson Jr. and Dawand Jones. Those will be big shoes to fill both literally and figuratively as Johnson and Jones are each expected to be selected in the first few rounds of the NFL draft.

Current Ohio State offensive tackles ranked by the 247Sports composite

Ranking Ohio State offensive tackles by 247Sports recruiting composite #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team has 18 offensive linemen on scholarship and seven arrived in Columbus, Ohio, as offensive tackles. Now the Ohio State offensive line is in a state of flux, so some of these players may wind up on the interior, and some players that I list on the interior could be moved outside. Still, we are moving forward with how 247Sports had them listed as recruits.

The offensive tackle position will be exciting to watch this spring. The Buckeyes lost both Paris Johnson and Dawand Jones and will be hoping a youngster such as Tegra Tshabola steps up to the plate. Here is a ranking of the scholarship offensive tackles on the roster based on their 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Ohio State football recruiting class of 2022 scouting report: George Fitzpatrick

Ohio State football recruiting class of 2022 scouting report: George Fitzpatrick #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program had a consensus top-five class in the country for 2022 and was considered the No. 1 class in the Big Ten by a wide margin. The third-ranked offensive lineman in this Buckeye class is George Fitzpatrick, but he may have the highest ceiling.

It should be noted for those that are not familiar, recruiting classes are not like NFL draft classes. Many of these players will not see time as freshmen and will likely be redshirted. It’s also true that in the age of the transfer portal it is likely several players from this class will not be here at the end.

I wanted to at least take a dive into some of the top studs and we’ll start at the top of the recruiting class with offensive tackle, George Fitzpatrick and we have already previously dived into C.J. BOOM! Ohio State gets commitment from four-star offensive lineman

Ohio State landed another big-time prospect for the 2022 class Friday!

Ohio State has been on quite a tear lately with a July to remember. First, the Buckeyes got a commitment from J.T. Tuiomolau, one of the top-rated players in the 2021 class. Then less than 24 hours later, Brian Hartline was able to secure another top 20 receiver in the 2022 class, with a verbal commitment from Kojo Antwi. Now OSU has added yet another to next year’s class.

Colorado native, George Fitzpatrick, made his intentions known that he will be heading to Columbus from the Rocky Mountains. Fitzpatrick is a four-star lineman and is the second offensive tackle to commit in the class, picking Ohio State over the likes of Oklahoma, Oregon, Florida, and Michigan.

Fitzpatrick becomes the 17th member to commit to the Buckeye’s 2022 class that is currently ranked No. 1 according to 247 Sports class rankings.

Even though Independence Day was almost a week ago, the Booms keep coming for Ryan Day and the Ohio State football team. And there’s still room for more as the summer keeps marching on to a much anticipated fall football season.
