Izzo: Michigan State basketball freshman Gehrig Normand plans to redshirt this season

One of the Michigan State’s freshmen is still considering taking a redshirt:

When it comes to Michigan State basketball’s freshmen class, most of the hype has been around Xavier Booker, Coen Carr, and Jeremy Fears Jr., and probably rightfully so, as they are all super talented, young players. But don’t forget about Gehrig Normand.

The former 4-star small forward is known as a sharpshooter, and given the fact that MSU has struggled from the field in the early-goings of this season, some fans have wondered if Normand might get a shot to show what he can do.

However, on Monday, coach Tom Izzo indicated that Normand is still considering taking a redshirt this season. Izzo cited a desire to see Normand add some strength as a reason Normand may redshirt.

Izzo did say the decision is still in review, and if the Spartans can’t increase their outside shooting, they may decide to pivot here, who knows.

Wisconsin Basketball Target Gehrig Normand Crystal Balled to Big Ten Rival

Wisconsin’s top remaining wing target in the 2023 recruiting class picks up a crystal ball to a Big Ten rival:

On Monday afternoon, four-star wing Gehrig Normand, who the Badgers pushed their chips all in on, picked up a crystal ball prediction from Michigan State insider Justin Thind for MSU.

Per the 247sports Composite, Normand, who has seen his recruitment take off this summer, is the No. 89 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, the No. 17 SF in the country, and the No. 5 player in Texas.

The Birdville High School standout took an official visit to Madison back in June. Still, coach Gard couldn’t seal the deal before the likes of Auburn, Illinois, and Michigan State came knocking during the July evaluation period.

“I’m looking for somewhere I can be as confident as possible and a school where I can trust the coach and have them trust me so I can put a product on the floor that wins a National Championship,” Normand told BadgersWire back in June.

Coach Gard’s need for a wing in the 2023 recruiting class grows more glaring by the day. UW was heavily pursuing four-stars Jamie Kaiser and Gehrig Normand at one point, but now it looks like it’s back to the drawing board in search of a late bloomer with a beatable offer list.
