Browns add cornerback and offensive tackle a day after waiving 5 players

After having a couple of injuries during the Hall of Fame game and waiving players, the Browns have added a cornerback and offensive tackle.

A day after the Hall of Fame game, the Cleveland Browns waived five players with a couple of them getting an injury designation. The team signed three players on the same day before filling the final two roster spots on Saturday. The team needed to add a defensive back and offensive tackle and they did so by signing offensive linemen Derrick Kelly II and Gavin Heslop.

Kelly II went undrafted out of Florida State in 2019 and has spent time with the Saints, Giants, and Jets, as well as a season in the XFL. He stands at 6-5 and 320 pounds and has experience playing both tackle spots and some snaps at guard.

Heslop was also undrafted in 2020 coming out of Stony Brook having spent time with the Seahawks, Giants, and Panthers. Heslop has shown that he isn’t afraid to play the run though he hasn’t seen the field much in his career.

Panthers add three players to practice squad

The busy Panthers made three additions to their practice squad on Monday.

From firing a pair of defensive coaches to bringing quarterback Sam Darnold back to the active roster, the Carolina Panthers had themselves a busy Monday. But they didn’t stop maneuvering there.

The team also added three players to its practice squad—wide receiver Emeka Emezie, linebacker Kobe Jones and cornerback Gavin Heslop.

Emezie, a Waxhaw, N.C. native and Marvin Ridge Maverick, attended North Carolina State University from 2017 to 2021. There, he reeled in 229 receptions for 2,895 yards and 19 touchdowns over 62 games.

Jones, who played his college ball at Mississippi State University from 2017 to 2020, has appeared in one NFL game during his pro career. That outing came this season with the Green Bay Packers back in Week 8—where he played seven snaps on defense and seven on special teams against the Buffalo Bills.

Heslop is a second-year veteran, who played in three games for the Seattle Seahawks in 2021. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder recorded one tackle.

To make room for the trio, Carolina released quarterback Jacob Eason, safety Marquise Blair and defensive Delontae Scott from the practice squad.

Giants trim roster to 85 by waiving Jeremiah Hall, two others

The New York Giants waived TE Jeremiah Hall and two others on Tuesday, trimming their roster to the league-mandated 85.

The New York Giants had to trim their roster down to 85 by the close of business on Tuesday, but they didn’t wait that long.

Just prior to the start of practice, the team announced that tight end Jeremiah Hall and defensive back Gavin Heslop had been waived. Wide receiver Austin Proehl was also waived/injured.

Hall, who had been receiving first-team reps at times, is the biggest surprise among those waived. It’s especially surprising given the team’s lacking depth at the tight end position. He had also been receiving snaps at fullback/H-back in the absence of Andre Miller (forearm).

The Giants now have just four healthy tight ends on the roster: rookies Daniel Bellinger and Austin Allen, Chris Myarick and Jordan Akins.

Heslop and Proehl were deep down on the depth chart.

Giants sign CB Gavin Heslop, release OL Korey Cunningham

The New York Giants have signed CB Gavin Heslop and terminated the contract of OL Korey Cunningham (non-football injury).

On Friday, the New York Giants made one last roster move ahead of next week’s training camp by signing cornerback Gavin Heslop.

The 24-year-old Heslop is a New York native. He was born in Yonkers, attended high school in White Plains and went to college at Stony Brook. He was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2020 NFL draft.

In three career games, Heslop has recorded one tackle. He’s taken most of his snaps on special teams but did log four defensive snaps a season ago. Unfortunately, that ended negatively as the cornerback suffered a broken fibula and tibia.

Heslop was a NYSSWA first-team All-New York State selection and first team All-Catholic High School Football League in high school.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants terminated offensive lineman Korey Cunningham’s contract citing a non-football injury.

Seahawks add another defensive lineman to Reserve/COVID-19 list

Seattle just announced that defensive tackle Myles Adams has been placed on the team’s Reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Seahawks just announced that defensive tackle Myles Adams has been placed on the team’s Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Adams is the second Seattle defensive lineman who’s been placed on the list this week and his presence brings the total number of players on it to five. Here is the team’s updated COVID-19 list heading into the final week of the 2021 season.

Pete Carroll: Seahawks RB Chris Carson had surgery on his neck

The latest to join the club is Seattle’s starting running back, Chris Carson.

It speaks to how the Seahawks’ season has gone that three players have undergone surgery in only a matter of days. Strong safety Jamal Adams re-aggravated his shoulder injury against the 49ers and is done for the season after having surgery. Defensive back Gavin Heslop was elevated from the practice squad to take Adams’ spot on the 53-man roster, but he broke his leg against the Texans.

The latest to join the club is Seattle’s starting running back, Chris Carson. According to head coach Pete Carroll, Carson underwent surgery on his neck and is positive about the results and outlook.

Carson hasn’t been on the field since Week 4 against the 49ers. He went on injured reserve the following week along with Russell Wilson. Carson was designated to return in early November but his neck did not respond well to practice and he was never activated from the injured reserve list.

Carson has one year left before his contract voids in 2023. His base salary for next season will be $4,500,000. In the event that Carson can’t return to form, Seattle could cut him after June 1 and save $4,925,000.

Seahawks shuffle practice squad with two moves for special teams depth

Seahawks shuffle practice squad with two moves for special teams depth

The Seattle Seahawks have made a couple of practice squad moves over the last two days as they begin preparing for their Week 15 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.

Yesterday, the team announced they’d signed wide receiver Matt Cole to the practice squad. Cole (5-foot-10, 200 pounds) is from Chicago and played college ball at Division II school McKendree University. He went undrafted in 2020 and first signed with the Dolphins, then the 49ers. He appeared in one game last season with the Niners and another with Carolina this year, putting in 34 special teams snaps total. Cole gives more depth on speical teams following Gavin Heslop’s season-ending leg injury and surgery.

Seattle is also calling up a defender to the active roster. According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, linebacker Tanner Muse is being signed off the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Muse was one of many recent draft blunders by the Raiders. After they picked him in the third round of the 2020 draft he was released before the season began. He had been elevated from the practice squad twice already this year, so he needed to be signed in order to play. He’s been on the field for 29 snaps, exclusively on special teams.

Seahawks DB Gavin Heslop undergoes successful leg surgery

Seattle Seahawks defensive back Gavin Heslop underwent successful leg surgery following his leg injury Week 14 against the Houston Texans.

Defensive back Gavin Heslop had just been promoted from the practice squad last Friday before appearing in the Seattle Seahawks Week-14 win over the Houston Texans.

In a scary scene, he was carted off the field in the fourth quarter with a devastating leg injury. Heslop remained behind in Texas at a Houston hospital.

“What a heartbreaker,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Monday. “He just got started. He was doing well too, and to get to this point where we got them active and all that, versatile football player. It’s just too bad. It’s a real shame.”

While Carroll confirmed that Heslop had indeed broken both his fibula and tibia he also had some good news to report.

“He had a real successful surgery,” Carroll said. “He sounded way better, was much more upbeat about that everything worked out OK and all that. He’ll get back here in a couple days.”
