LSU baseball dominates Louisiana-Monroe, extends winning streak to 3

It’s Brayden Jobert’s world, and we’re all just living in it.

“YOU CAN PUCKER UP AND KISS THAT BABY GOODBYE! HE’S HOTTER THAN A FIRE ANT ON A FEVER BLISTER! Jobert, swinging it like Excalibur right now,” play-by-play commentator Lyn Rollins proclaimed during Tuesday night’s game against Louisiana-Monroe.

It is truly Brayden Jobert’s world; we are all just living in it. Facing the Warhawks at Alex Box Stadium, the Tigers picked up right where they left off on Sunday.

[autotag]Tyrann Mathieu[/autotag] was back in the bayou to make the first pitch, and that was the start of a great night for LSU as it pushed its winning streak to three games with a dominant 15-4 win heading into a weekend series against the Auburn Tigers.

In the top of the first inning, ULM hit a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, but that was the last sliver of hope it would get in this game. In the bottom of the inning, the scoring spree started for the Tigers. First, [autotag]Josh Berry[/autotag] tied the game up on an RBI single.

Second, Jobert hit a three-RBI double to make it 4-1.

Third, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI double, and last, [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit an RBI single to make the score 6-1 LSU after one inning. The Tigers would get on the board again in the bottom of the third when Dugas hit a solo home run to left field to make it 7-1.

In the top of the fourth, [autotag]Cale Lansville[/autotag] came in to pitch and he surrendered three Warhawk runs to make it 7-4 after four innings. LSU scored again in the bottom of the sixth when Jobert hit a solo homer to make it 8-4.

That was followed by a [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] sacrifice fly to make it 9-4 after six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a past ball and Jobert hit yet another home run. This time, it was a three-run shot to make it 13-4 LSU after seven innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag] was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another run, and [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly to make it 15-4 headed to the top of the ninth. [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] came in to finish the game on the mound in the ninth and worked a quick 1-2-3 inning.

With the win, LSU moves to 18-7 on the year and 3-3 in conference play. It will play the Auburn Tigers at home starting this Thursday, with the first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at The Box.

Tigers even the series against Florida with big win in Game 2

LSU beat the Gators 16-4 to set up a decisive Game 3 on Sunday.

Hello, offense. It’s been a while.

After losing on Friday night 7-2, LSU came out swinging it on Saturday. That paid off big time for the Tigers as they made a statement with a 16-4 win to even the series heading into Sunday’s rubber match.

[autotag]Mike Hilliard[/autotag] got the start on the mound, and he finally ended the Tigers’ recent pitching woes as he earned his second win of the season.

LSU got things going offensively from the very beginning. In the top of the first inning, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to give the Tigers an early lead.

In the top of the third inning, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly to score [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] and [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] reached on an error that scored Morgan to make it 4-0 LSU.

Still, in the third inning, LSU made a call to the bullpen, but not for a pitcher. [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit back-to-back homers to extend the lead to 8-0 after only three innings.

In the top of the fifth inning, LSU scored on a Florida error to extend the lead to 9-0.

Did I say “Happy Mike Day” yet?

Saturday was a very happy Mike day as Hilliard kept the Tigers off the board for five full innings before Florida finally scored. The Gators scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to finally chase him from the mound, but at that point, it was 9-4 LSU after six innings.

Hilliard’s final line was 5 2/3 innings pitched, five hits, four runs, zero walks and seven strikeouts. [autotag]Paul Gervase[/autotag] came in to relieve him and finished the sixth inning, working into the seventh and eighth, as well.

He pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up zero hits and zero runs with one walk and two strikeouts. LSU wasn’t done scoring yet, though, as in the top of the ninth inning, Jobert hit an RBI single to make it 10-4.

Not to be outdone, Dugas followed that up with an RBI double of his own to extend the lead to 11-4.

Jobert scored on a wild pitch, [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly, another run scored on a wild pitch, and then a Crews missile was launched in Gainesville to make it 16-4 LSU as we headed to the bottom of the ninth inning.

Trent Vietmeier came in to finish the game in the bottom of the ninth as he went three-up and three-down to secure the 16-4 LSU win. The Tigers were led by Thompson at the plate as he finished 3 of 6 on the night.

LSU will play the rubber match against the Gators on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.

Gators take a bite out of LSU baseball in Game 1

The Tigers started off their weekend series against Florida with a rough outing on Friday.

Coming off of Wednesday’s heartbreaking loss to Louisiana Tech in 12 innings, the Tigers could use a pick-me-up in the worst way on Friday night against the Florida Gators.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan for coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] in a 7-1 blowout loss. [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] got the start on the mound for LSU as he returned to his usual Friday night role after his injury.

The Gators scored on a pair of solo home runs in the first and the fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth. That’s when the wheels fell off the Money train. Florida proceeded to score four runs to take a 6-0 lead.

Money was replaced in the top of the sixth inning. His final stat line was five innings pitched, seven hits, six runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Florida scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when the Gators scored a run on a flyout to make it 7-0.

In the top of the eighth inning, LSU finally got on the board when Dylan Crews scored on a Gavin Dugas groundout to make it 7-1. In the top of the ninth inning, Hayden Travinski hit a solo shot to left field to score the final run of the ball game.

With the loss, LSU drops to 15-7 and 1-3 in conference play. LSU will play game two against Florida tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m CT.

Tigers start the week off with a win over New Orleans

LSU baseball took down the Privateers 11-3 on Wednesday night to win its fifth-straight game.

This is a huge week for LSU baseball as the Tigers prepare for the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic this weekend. Before going toe-to-toe with Oklahoma, No. 1 Texas, and Baylor, LSU got to warm up with New Orleans at Alex Box Stadium this evening, in which it earned an 11-3 win.

Garrett Edwards got the start on the mound for LSU, and in the first inning, the Privateers scored a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 headed to the bottom of the first. In that frame, LSU came out swinging and let its starting pitcher know that it had his back.

Tre Morgan reached base on an error, Dylan Crews was hit by a pitch, and Cade Doughty hit an RBI double to score Morgan. A passed ball then scored Crews, and Doughty scored on a Jordan Thompson double play. At the end of the first, LSU led 3-1.

In the top of the second inning, Edwards was pulled from the game after only pitching one inning giving up three hits, two walks, and two earned runs. Grant Taylor came in to pitch for the Tigers and got three quick outs. In the bottom of the second, Gavin Dugas and Alex Milazzo walked leading to a Morgan RBI double followed by a Crews RBI single, and a Doughty RBI groundout scored Morgan to make the score 6-2 LSU.

In the top of the fourth inning, Riley Cooper came in to pitch. Taylor’s final line was two innings pitched, zero hits, zero runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. In the bottom of the fifth, Jacob Berry hit a blast to right field to make it 7-1 Tigers thru five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Bryce Collins came in to pitch for the Tigers. The final line on Cooper was 2.1 innings with zero hits, zero runs, and one strikeout. In the bottom of the seventh, LSU added on to their lead with a Doughty dinger, a Thompson RBI double, a McManus sacrifice fly, and a Morgan RBI single to make it 11-2 Tigers. In the top of the eighth inning, Paul Gervase came in to pitch for the Tigers.

The final line on Collins was 1.2 innings pitched with zero hits, zero runs, and one strikeout. New Orleans scored a run on a fielding error to make it 11-3. In the top of the ninth, Eric Reyzelman came in to finish the game and pitched one inning allowing zero hits, zero runs, and two strikeouts.

Grant Taylor (1-0) got the win and the Tigers were led at the plate by Morgan and Crews who both went 2 for 4.

LSU will begin the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic this Friday afternoon against Oklahoma from Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m CST.

Saturday’s alright for winning as LSU tops Southern in second weekend game.

The Tigers took the second leg of their four-game weekend slate with a 9-2 win over the Jaguars.

The Tigers won their second game of the weekend on Saturday, but things didn’t start off very positive in what was ultimately a 9-2 win over the Southern Jaguars.

Ma’Khail Hilliard got the start on the mound for LSU who allowed two earned runs in four innings of work. Tre Morgan led the Tigers at the plate going 4 for 5 with three RBI followed by Merrifield and Thompson who both finished 2 for 3

In the top of the fourth inning, the Jaguars drew first blood with an RBI triple which was followed up by an RBI single against Tigers starter Hilliard. Gavin Dugas then made a diving grab in the outfield to stop the bleeding at 2-0 Southern.

Hilliard was replaced by Coleman to start the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers finally got on the board as Dylan Crews hit an infield single that brought Milazzo home from third. After recording four outs in 1 1/3 innings, Coleman exited the game with an injury and was replaced by Gervase who came in and struck out the final two batters of the inning with ease.

After a pair of singles in the bottom of the sixth inning by Jobert and Thompson, Gavin Dugas hit a two-RBI double into the gap in right-center field and the Tigers took their first lead of the ballgame at 3-2. After Millazo bunted Dugas over to third, Whit Merrifield brought him home on an RBI double down the third-base line to make it 4-2 LSU.

Tre Morgan then continued his great day with an RBI single to score Merrifield. Tre Morgan scored on a sac fly to left by Jacob Berry and after six full innings, LSU led 6-2. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Milazzo laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Thompson. Tre Morgan picked up his fourth hit of the day with a two-RBI single to make it 9-2 Tigers after seven innings.

Trent Vietmeyer came in at the top of the eighth inning as a relief pitcher and finished off the win.

LSU will play a doubleheader tomorrow with the first game against Towson at 11 a.m. CST before another matchup against the Jaguars at 5 p.m.

Rough night in Ruston as Tigers drop first game of the season

The Tigers suffered their first setback of the season on the road against Louisiana Tech.

It was a rough night for LSU at J.C. Love Field in Ruston, Louisiana. Both teams entered the game with perfect 3-0 records, but a plethora of walks, bad luck, and errors proved too much for the Tigers to overcome against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in an 11-6 loss.

Riley Cooper (0-1) got the start on the mound for LSU. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in two innings with no walks and one strikeout. The Tigers were down 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Brayden Jobert hit his third homer of the year to cut the lead to 5-2.

In the top of the fifth, LSU added another run on a Tre Morgan groundout, and in the sixth, Gavin Dugas hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4 headed to the home half of the inning. At that point, it seemed like all of the momentum was favoring LSU and that they would be able to complete the comeback, but then everything went downhill fast.

If it could go wrong for LSU, it did in the bottom of the sixth inning. Louisiana Tech capitalized on three errors and a pair of walks in the bottom of the frame to take a 9-4 lead. They’d add on to that lead in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer to make it 11-4.

Gavin Dugas hit a two-run double in the top of the eighth to give LSU some hope, but that’s as close as the Tigers would come to a comeback as they fell 11-6. It was the first time in 25 years that LSU made the trip to Ruston. LSU entered the game with a record of 23-28 in true February road games in franchise history.

ā€œThey capitalized on our mistakes; good teams do that, and weā€™ll do that to teams at times this season,ā€ LSU coach Jay Johnson said in a release. ā€œYou like to win these games when mistakes rear their head, but we didnā€™t, so weā€™ll work on controlling the ball and weā€™ll work on having better plate discipline.

ā€œI was pleased with getting down 5-0 getting it back to 5-4; I think thatā€™s a good sign, and I think the energy in the dugout was a positive. I felt like we were engaged in the game, but weā€™ve got to play baseball better.ā€

The Tigers will return to the Box this weekend for a four-game series involving both the Towson Tigers and the Southern Jaguars that includes a doubleheader on Sunday.

Purple Rain: Tigers take Game 2 against Maine

The Tigers took the series with a 17-8 win on Saturday, and they’ll look for the sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. CST.

No, I’m not talking about Prince, but there is a possibility that doves were crying with all of the home runs hit at “The Box” today.

A couple of stats before we get into the meat of things: the Tigers had a 12-inning stretch of scoring at least one run per inning that ended in the bottom of the eighth in a 17-8 win over Maine in Game 2 on Saturday. Two Tigers were one hit away from hitting for the cycle, Cade Doughty and Dylan Crews.

The Tigers wasted no time getting it going this afternoon as Doughty hit a three-run homer in the first inning that scored Tre’ Morgan and Crews. That was followed up by a Gavin Dugas RBI single to make the lead 4-0 Tigers after one inning.

After the Black Bears were retired silently in the top of the second, Brayden Jobert continued his hot start with a sacrifice fly for an RBI to extend the lead to 5-0. Maine finally got on the board in the top of the third against the Tigers starting pitcher, Ma’Khail Hilliard.

It is a common trend in the game of baseball that if the leadoff hitter gets on base, most of the time they wind up scoring. That is exactly what happened in the third for Hilliard. A hit by pitch, a single, and a double, and just like that, Maine started trying to claw their way back into the game.

The Tigers then proceeded to get two of those three runs back in the bottom of the third with a Tre Morgan sacrifice fly and a Dylan Crews double to extend the lead to 7-3 after three innings. Jack Merrifield got involved in the scoring spree with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-3 Tigers after four innings.

Maine got an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning that chased Hilliard from the mound. Hilliard worked the first four innings and was charged with five runs, (three earned runs), four hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Javen Coleman (1-0) came in from the bullpen and ended up earning the win for the Tigers after giving up one run on one hit, no walks, and three strikeouts over three innings.

Those two runs in the top of the fifth trimmed the lead to 8-5. That’s when things got out of hand.

Doughty hit an RBI double, Jobert hit a two-RBI double, and Merrifield hit a two-RBI single to make it 13-5 at the end of five innings. Maine hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth and then came the arrival of Jacob Berry to the fun.

Berry hit his first homer as a Tiger and that was followed by a Crews triple and another Doughty RBI to make it 15-6 after six innings. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Berry was back at it again with a two-run blast to right field that made it 17-6. Maine scored two in the top of the eighth inning to make it 17-8, the ultimate final score.

LSU scored 17 runs on 17 hits while giving up eight runs on nine hits. For those keeping count, that’s 30 runs on 29 hits in two games. You would think Baton Rouge was located on the equator with how hot the Tiger bats are. LSU wraps up the series Sunday against Maine with the first pitch at 1 p.m CST as it looks to complete the sweep.

Houma, La. native Gavin Dugas was named SEC Co-Player of the Week. The star junior leftfielder shares this honor with South Carolina outfielder Andrew Eyster.

Dugas showcased stellar performances in all of the Tiger’s four games last week. He helped lead his team to three wins, including an SEC series victory over Alabama on Sunday where he hit .364 with one double, two homers, three RBI, four runs, one stolen base and a .429 on-base percentage.

In four games Dugas batted .429 with one double, two homers, eight RBI, five runs scored and a .526 on-base percentage. He currently leads the SEC in RBI with 57, while also batting .301 this season with 12 doubles, one triple, 14 homers and 44 runs.

[lawrence-related id=17717]

The week has been off to a fiery start for the Bayou baseball boys. Let’s hope they can keep the momentum in their final regular-season matchup, and that Dugas continues to help lead the pack towards victory.

We all know too well that the Tigers are either on or they’re off — they just need to stay the course and ride out this winning streak. They have all the tools they need to be successful in what will be their final postseason push.

Time to show out.
