LSU starts off strong with win over Kansas State in the Round Rock Classic

The Tigers continued their perfect start to the season in their opener in Texas on Friday.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] got his second start of the young season, and we saw the valiant return of [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] as LSU beat Kansas State 7-3 in the first game of the 2023 Round Rock Classic.

The Wildcats started off hot against Skenes as they got runners on second and third with only one out thanks to a leadoff single, a walk, and a flyout to advance the runners. Kansas State then scored on an RBI single to put runners on the corners with one out. The next two batters struck out and Skenes escaped only down 1-0.

The Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the second inning as [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] and advance [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to second. That tied the score at 1-1 after two innings.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch and White advanced to third. Morgan then reached on a fielder’s choice that scored White to make it 3-1 LSU after six innings.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game with a solo homer off of [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] to make it 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, LSU got that run back and more as the Tigers plated four runs to increase their lead to 7-2. [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], Crews hit an RBI single that scored [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag], and [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to score Crews and Dugas.

Floyd stayed in to pitch the top of the ninth inning to close out the win over the Wildcats. Kansas State was able to score an unearned run to make the final 7-3. With the win, LSU improves to 5-0 on the year. The Tigers will play the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday at noon CT in Game 2 of the Classic.

Thatcher Hurd struggles but Tre Morgan hits for the cycle in run-rule win over Southern

The Tigers overcame an early 4-0 deficit with 18 consecutive runs.

Despite falling behind early in the game, the Tigers managed to bounce back in a big way against Southern on Tuesday night thanks to a monster game from Tre Morgan. He hit for the cycle in order and totaled eight RBI in an 18-4 win as the game ended after seven innings thanks to the run rule.

UCLA transfer [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] got his first start on the mound in an LSU uniform, and it did not go as planned. Going into the season, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said that Hurd had some work to do because he was struggling with accuracy. That showed big time against the Southern Jaguars.

Hurd only lasted two full innings before being pulled after giving up four runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts. That rough start had the Tigers down 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. That’s when the LSU bats showed up big time.

After [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was hit by a pitch and [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] was walked, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI double to right field to score Crews and cut the lead to 4-1.

Morgan then hit Dugas with the “Anything you can, do I can do better,” as he hit a two-RBI double to left field to cut the lead to 4-3. Then, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-run shot to left to give the Tigers their first lead of the ball game.

[autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] came in to pitch for Hurd in the third inning and he continued on the mound until the middle of the 6th inning. Little was given the job of stopping the early bleeding and he did his job very well.

He finished the game going 3.2 innings, and he only allowed one hit with six strikeouts and one walk.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, after [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] was hit by a pitch and Crews walked, Jobert finally got a good swing on a pitch as he hit a three-run shot to left field to make it 8-4 Tigers after four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, LSU put up five more runs as [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch, Morgan hit a three-RBI triple to left field to score Dugas, Jobert and Crews, and Jones hit an RBI single up the middle to score Morgan to make it 13-4 after five innings.

Freshman [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] made his first appearance of the season as he came in to get the final out of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Thompson scored on a groundout by [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag]. [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] followed that with an RBI single to left field to score Stevenson and make it 15-4 before Morgan hit a three-run bomb to make it 18-4.

With that homer, Morgan completed the cycle. He hit a single, double, triple, and a homer in that order. Morgan’s cycle was the first cycle for LSU since Mikie Mahtook in 2010 against Alcorn State.

Morgan finished the game 4-for-5 with eight RBI.

Herring stayed in to pitch the seventh inning as he tried to end the game in a run rule. The first batter he faced roped a double to the left field line and he was removed from the mound after that as [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] came in to pitch for the Tigers. Edwards got three outs in a row without allowing a run to close things out.

LSU will be back in action this weekend in the Round Rock Classic as the Tigers take on Kansas State on Friday at 2 p.m. CT.

Tigers make a Hasty exit in 2022 SEC Tournament with elimination game loss to Kentucky

LSU’s run in Hoover came to an end on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers had a quick turnaround after Friday night’s loss to Tennessee.

[autotag]Jacob Hasty[/autotag] got the start against the Kentucky Wildcats in a win-or-go-home scenario in the SEC Tournament, and they sent the Tigers packing in a 7-2 loss.

Kentucky also sent Hasty packing with a final line of 0.1 innings pitched, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. [autotag]Eric Reyzelman[/autotag] came in to get the Tigers out of the inning and he did just that. In the bottom of the second, Kentucky hit a solo homer off Reyzelman to increase their lead to 3-0.

The Wildcats scored two runs each in the fourth and fifth inning to make it 7-0 Kentucky headed to the top of the seventh inning, and the LSU offense didn’t have a hit yet. The Tigers finally got on the board in the seventh as Tre Morgan reached on an error and then [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] brought him home on an RBI triple.

[autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score McManus and cut the lead to 7-2 Wildcats. LSU was unable to score any more runs in the game as it was knocked out of the tournament.

Now, we will wait until the selection show Monday morning at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2 to see whether LSU will host a regional in Baton Rouge or have to travel for their regional.

Tigers take down Kentucky in late-night SEC Tournament opener after numerous delays

The Tigers are moving on to the winner’s bracket after comfortably handling Kentucky despite a shaky start

After a long hiatus due to a first-round bye and a plethora of rain, the LSU Tigers finally got to take the field at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium and play in their first game in the SEC Tournament on Thursday night.

LSU got to skip the single-elimination round as it entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed. That meant that the Tigers would play the winner of No. 5 Auburn and No. 12 Kentucky.

Coming into the week, no No. 12 seed had ever won a game in the SEC tournament, but the Wildcats beat AU to set up a second-round matchup against LSU to begin double-elimination play. Their luck ran out on Thursday night, as LSU advanced into the winner’s bracket with an 11-6 victory.

It will face top-seeded Tennessee on Friday night in the third round in what will be the first matchup against the Volunteers this season.

[autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers, and Kentucky jumped on him in the top of the second inning with a two-run homer to take an early lead. But in the bottom of the third, LSU got those runs back, plus one.

With bases loaded, [autotag]Tre’ Morgan[/autotag] grounded out to the pitcher, but [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was able to score. That was followed by the red hot [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] hitting a two-RBI double to put LSU on top 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers put up three more runs to extend their lead to 6-2. Crews singled to center field to bring home [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] singled to bring home [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag], and Crews scored on an insane play at the plate where he dodged the catcher’s tag and eventually led to Kentucky’s head coach getting thrown out when the run was confirmed after video review.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the bases were loaded for Thompson, and he came through with a single to clear the bases and make it 8-2 Tigers. McManus then got his third hit of the night as he singled to bring Pearson home and make it 9-2 LSU.

Hilliard’s day was finished as the Tigers entered the top of the seventh inning with [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] on the mound. For Fontenot, it was his 111th career appearance, which broke the record for most career appearances. Hilliard’s final line was six innings pitched allowing two runs on four hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

Kentucky scored a run on Fontenot to cut the lead to 9-3 as we went to the bottom of the seventh. Pearson became the first LSU player with five hits in an SEC Tournament game as he launched a two-run moonshot to right field to make it 11-3.

And oh yeah, he’s just a freshman.

In the top of the eighth inning, Kentucky hit a three-run homer to cut the lead to 11-6 and bring [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag] out of the bullpen. After retiring the first batter he faced for out number three, Taylor stayed on the mound for the ninth.

After walking the first batter of the ninth, Taylor was replaced by [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag], who was greeted with a single. Cooper retired the rest of the Wildcats, and the Tigers won 11-6.

With the victory, LSU will play in the winner’s bracket against No. 1 Tennessee on Friday night in the late game. That start time is TBD, but at least the forecast shows no sign of rain ā€” for now.

How to watch LSU baseball’s final regular-season series against Vanderbilt

There will be a lot at stake for the Tigers when they head to Nashville this weekend.

Aside from a compelling win over Northwestern State on Tuesday night, the Tigers didn’t have much time to lick their wounds after suffering a sweep against Ole Miss in what could prove to be the final series at Alex Box Stadium last weekend.

LSU (34-18, 14-13 SEC) has to hit the road to play a Vanderbilt (35-16, 14-13 SEC) team in Nashville that currently has the same record in conference play.

There will be a lot at stake for coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and his squad, as the Tigers ā€” the No. 7 seed in the SEC, as things currently stand ā€” could theoretically play their way into a top-four seed with a good showing. Inversely, a poor showing could drop them all the way to 10th at the SEC Tournament in Hoover.

With a lot at stake both in terms of conference seeding and the race to host a regional in the NCAA Tournament, LSU can’t afford to have a let-down for the second-straight weekend. Here’s everything you need to know to catch this weekend’s regular-season finale.

Tigers drop the series to the Rebels after Game 2 loss on Saturday

It was not a good Saturday for LSU baseball as Ole Miss won both games to take the series.

After dropping Game 1 on Saturday morning by a 5-3 margin, LSU looked to tie the series up in Game 2. But Ole Miss was having none of that.

The Rebels took an early lead and never looked back as they beat LSU 11-1 to take the series. It’s the first conference series loss since losing to Arkansas in April. [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers and Ole Miss jumped on him early as they scored four runs in the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag] came in to pitch for LSU and he was greeted with two singles, a strikeout, and a walk before he exited the game.

[autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] then came in out of the bullpen and after an error by the LSU infield, Ole Miss scored five more runs to take a 9-0 lead in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Money gave up his only earned run on a solo homer to make it 10-0 Rebels.

LSU finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored.

That would be the only run the Tigers scored in the game. The Rebels tacked on one more run in the top of the eighth inning after another LSU error making the final score 11-1.

It was not a good time to drop a series as we’re only a couple of weeks away from the SEC tournament as well as the NCAA announcing who is hosting regionals. LSU will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.

Bombs away in Baton Rouge as LSU mercy-rules Southeastern Louisiana

The Tigers claimed a 17-3 win in a game that ended after the top of the seventh.

Southeastern Louisiana is not The Gap Band, but it definitely felt like LSU dropped a bomb on it Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers beat the Lions 17-3 in a game that was called after the top of the seventh, and things are looking good heading into the second-to-last SEC series against Ole Miss this weekend.

Unlike Texas every fall, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] is actually back for the Tigers, and he got the party started in the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer to left field to make it 1-0.

The Lions struck back with a solo homer of their own in the top of the second to tie the game 1-1 before LSU took the lead for good in the bottom of the second with a [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, everything fell apart like Post Malone for Southeastern Louisiana as LSU scored nine runs. Dugas started the rally once again, this time with a two-RBI single to score [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to make it 4-1.

[autotag]Collier Cranford[/autotag] then scored on a [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] groundout to make it 5-1. [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single that scored Pearson and Dugas to make it 7-1.

[autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double that scored Doughty and Morgan to make it 9-1. McManus hit an RBI single to score Jobert and Thompson scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 11-1 LSU after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, the Lions hit a two-run homer off [autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] to make it 11-3 but that is all the damage they could do. In the top of the sixth inning, [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] came out of the bullpen to pitch for the Tigers, take that as you may.Ā  Money has been the No. 2 starter for most of the season, but after a few rough outings, maybe he’s gone to the pen to get his swagger back.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tiger bats came alive again as LSU reeled off six more runs. McManus hit an RBI double to score Jobert. Pearson and Crews both walked with bases loaded and Morgan hit a three-RBI double to make it 17-3.

With the win, LSU moves to 33-15 (14-10 SEC) on the season, boasting a 25-6 record at The Box. Hopefully, LSU can add some more wins to that home record this weekend as they welcome the Rebels into town for a weekend series. The first game is scheduled for Friday night at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Fantastic Game 3 showing leads LSU to series win at Alabama

The Tigers captured their fourth win in their last five SEC series on Sunday.

After losing two out of their first three SEC series, the Tigers entered Sunday’s game in search of their fourth series win out of the last five as well as their third in a row.

They did just that in a 12-3 victory over Alabama in Game 3. [autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got the start on the mound for LSU and like [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] on Saturday night, he was pulled in the first inning of the ballgame.

He did record two outs on two hits and one run before being pulled for [autotag]Jacob Hasty[/autotag]. In the top of the first inning, LSU got out to a hot start as it scored three runs off of a two-RBI single by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] and an RBI single by [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag] to make it 3-0 headed to the bottom of the first. ‘Bama scored a run against Dutton in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to two.

That score remained until the top of the fifth inning when LSU doubled its score with a Bianco RBI single and a two-run homer by [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] to make it 6-1 headed to the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Eric Reyzelman[/autotag] came into pitch for Hasty.

Hasty’s final line was four innings pitched allowing two hits, zero runs, and four strikeouts. In the top of the seventh, LSU tacked on three more runs to extend the lead to 9-1. [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice and Thompson scored. That was followed by another two-run McManus homer.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alabama scored off of a solo home run to cut the lead to 9-2. In the top of the eighth inning, (stop me if you’ve read this before) but the Tigers scored three runs for the third time today. [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] (glad to have you back, pal) doubled to start the inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] walked, and we got a Crews Missile to make it 12-2. That’s Dylan Crews’ third homer in the past two games.

[autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] came in to pitch the eighth and the ninth innings to try to close out the game. The first batter for the Tide in the ninth hit a solo homer to cut the lead to 12-3. That prompted [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] to come trotting in out of the bullpen. Fontenot was able to get out of the inning while allowing no more runs. With the win, LSU moves to 32-15 (14-10 SEC). The next game will be May 10 against Southeastern Louisiana at Alex Box Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball gets back in the win column against Grambling

The Tigers had an offensive explosion in a Tuesday night win.

After another 2-2 week and a series loss to Auburn, LSU needed a bounce-back heading into a midweek contest against Grambling on Tuesday night. It got back in the win column as the Tigers won 16-3 in a game that was called early after seven innings with a run rule.

However, things did not start out well for LSU in this one, and it looked like it could be heading for a tough game. Grambling scored two runs on Grant Taylor in the top of the first to take an early lead. But in the bottom of the first, LSU tied the game with a two-run home run by [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag].

In the bottom of the second, LSU scored four more runs as [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit a solo homer, [autotag]Collier Cranford[/autotag] scored on a fielding error, and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to score [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] and Berry and increase the lead to 6-2.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the LSU offense erupted as it scored a whopping nine runs. It started out with a [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] RBI single, followed by a Travinski two-run homer, a two-run [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] missile, a [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] RBI single, a Thompson RBI single, and a two-RBI Cranford single to make it 15-2.

In the top of the fifth, Grambling scored an unearned run after an LSU error to make it 15-3. In the bottom of the sixth, [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] scored on a passed ball to make it 16-3.

With the win, LSU moves to 20-9 on the year and their next game will be in Starkville, Mississippi, as they take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs Friday at 7 pm.

LSU evens the series with Auburn with a big win in Game 2

LSU dominated on Friday night to set up a decisive Game 3 at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.

LSU came into Friday night’s Game 2 looking to rebound after Thursday’s tough one-run loss to Auburn. A big offensive performance allowed the right Tigers to even up the series heading into Sunday’s rubber match.

If [autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] keeps pitching like he has been lately, “Mike Day” will become a Baton Rouge holiday. The fifth-year senior came out and absolutely shoved Friday as he pitched 5.1 innings giving up four hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

That is a very welcome sight for all Tiger fans and especially coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag]. Offensively, things started just as they did last night with a home run in the bottom of the first inning, this time by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag].

 

In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] added to the lead with an RBI double that scored [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag].

That was followed by an RBI single from Crews to plate Doughty and make it 3-0 LSU after five full innings.

Auburn finally got on the board in the top of the seventh as they scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. LSU gained some breathing room again in the bottom of the seventh thanks to [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], Crews, [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] to make it 8-2 LSU.

In the bottom of the eighth, Travinski scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-2 as heading into the final inning. [autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag] came in to pitch the top of the ninth and he was able to retire Auburn without allowing a run.

Saturday’s decisive Game 3 is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT.
