Tommy White selected by Oakland Athletics to lead off 2nd round of 2024 MLB draft

Tommy White became the first LSU player taken as he’s going to Oakland with the 40th pick in the draft.

With the 40th pick of the 2024 MLB Draft, the Oakland Athletics selected LSU third baseman [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag].

Tommy Tanks was one of the most prolific hitters in college baseball since he started as a Freshman for the NC State Wolfpack. After his freshman season with the Wolfpack, White transferred to LSU where he would team up with [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] and more to lead LSU to a national championship. Tommy finished that season with a .374 batting average and he had 24 doubles, 24 homers, and 105 RBI.

This season at LSU, his production dipped to a .330 batting average with 12 doubles, 24 homers, and 70 RBI. One area where White improved a lot while at LSU was on defense. He became a guy who was a designated hitter to a guy who had a lot of potential at the hot corner.

He heads to the Oakland A’s to play for a team that needs some help in a big way.

What is wrong with LSU baseball?

The 2024 season has not gotten off to the best start for the Tigers.

The 2024 season has not gotten off to the best start for the LSU baseball team. After three conference series, the Tigers are 20-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play and have lost all three series. The Tigers dropped series to Mississippi State and Florida 2-1 and then got swept by Arkansas last weekend.

So, what is going on with this team? For one, let’s rewind to the 2023 season. [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers had the two best players in college baseball on their team, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag]. The No. 1 and No. 2 overall draft picks in the 2023 MLB draft.

Along with that, the team had [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag], [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag]. That equates to two out of three starting pitchers, first and second base, shortstop, designated hitter, and two of the three outfield spots. One outfield spot ([autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag]), one starting pitcher ([autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag]), and two catchers ([autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag]) were all that remained from last year’s starting lineup.

Replacing six hitters in your starting lineup and two of your starting pitchers is not an easy task. Johnson had to hit the recruiting trail hard for high school kids and players in the transfer portal. He did a great job of rebuilding the team, but some players you just can’t replace. There is no replacement for those guys.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at some stats so far. LSU is in the middle of the road for most hitting statistics in the conference. The Tigers are seventh in the conference in batting average, on-base percentage, and hits, eighth in slugging percentage, doubles, and triples. The biggest issue for LSU on the offensive side is that we are ranked 11th out of 14 in RBI and runs scored. LSU is not hitting the long ball as well either as the Tigers rank ninth in that stat.

Three more interesting offensive stats, LSU ranks first in the conference in double plays and caught stealing. First in those areas is not a good thing. That means you have hit the most double plays and been caught stealing the most. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] leads the conference in double plays. He has hit into eight of them. That’s three more than the next closest player.

Now, let’s look at the Tigers’ performance on the mound. [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] is the silver lining of this pitching staff. Without him, you would not want to see any of these numbers. Holman has the second-lowest ERA (1.38), second-highest strikeouts (61), and fourth-lowest opponent batting average (.173). Why am I singling him out? Because if you take him out of the equation, LSU does not have another pitcher in the top 15 of the conference.

LSU has the MOST walks in the SEC (131) and the second most wild pitches in the SEC (28). [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] is tied for the most losses in the conference with four and three LSU pitchers are tied for sixth in the conference in wild pitches with four. ([autotag]Kade Anderson[/autotag], [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] and Hurd)

LSU is sixth in the conference in fielding percentage but [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] is tied for first for the most errors in the conference with seven. Those numbers will not get the job done, especially in conference play.

LSU will play Southern at home on Monday before hosting Vanderbilt this weekend.

Instant Analysis: Luke Holman leads LSU baseball past Texas as Tigers earn first ranked win

Luke Holman pitched 5.2 innings and only allowed three hits as he gave up zero runs, walked one batter and struck out 12.

The last time LSU and Texas met, It was a pitcher’s duel until [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] finally put the Tigers in front late in the game. This time, it was more of the same as LSU won 6-3 to earn its first ranked victory of the season.

[autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] got the start on the mound and he was incredible. He pitched 5.2 innings and only allowed three hits as he gave up zero runs, walked one batter and struck out 12. The only thing he needed was some run support.

He got some in the top of the fourth inning when [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded to give LSU a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] showed the Longhorns why we call him Tommy Tanks. White hit a solo shot to center field to extend LSU’s lead to 3-0. That wouldn’t be the only scoring the Tigers would do that inning as [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a three-run shot to right field off of former Tiger, [autotag]Grant Fonteneau[/autotag]. His oppo-taco put LSU up 6-0!

Texas got a run back in the bottom of the seventh inning when they hit a solo shot against [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag] to cut the lead to 6-1. In the top of the ninth inning, two runners reached base before a two-RBI double cleared the bases and cut the lead to 6-3. Ackenhausen was charged with both runs and [autotag]Fidel Ulloa[/autotag] just needed one more out to secure the win. Ulloa struck out the final hitter and the Tigers beat the Texas Longhorns 6-3.

The Tigers will take on Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Game 2 of the Astros Foundation Classic.

Two Tigers make MLB Pipeline’s initial first-round mock draft

MLB Pipeline has released its first mock for the 2024 MLB draft, and two LSU Tigers have made the first round.

MLB Pipeline has released its first mock for the 2024 MLB draft, and two LSU Tigers have made the first round. One of them is a superstar third baseman and the other is a pitcher that had a great performance in Omaha.

With the 10th overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft, MLB Pipeline has the Washington Nationals selecting [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], a third baseman from LSU. I guess the Nationals are just going to try to make a team full of LSU players as the Nats took [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] in the 2023 MLB draft. White was a transfer from NC State where his claim to fame was hitting a lot of homers. That mantra lived on in Baton Rouge last spring.

With the 18th pick of the 2024 MLB draft, MLB Pipeline has the Tampa Bay Rays taking [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag], a right-handed pitcher from LSU. Hurd was a transfer from UCLA who took his lumps at the start of the 2023 season but wound up as one of the best pitchers in LSU’s rotation. He put on a show in Omaha that helped lead LSU to a national championship.

D1Baseball editor gives an inside scoop on LSU Baseball

LSU will start its title defense on Feb. 16 against VMI.

Kendall Rogers, the managing editor for D1Baseball, took a trip to Baton Rouge to check out the defending national champions to see how they are looking going into 2024. After leaving the bayou, Rogers gave his thoughts on what he saw.

A few interesting thoughts on this. Talk about a strong starting rotation. [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag], [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] and [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] are about as good of a three-man rotation as you will find anywhere in the NCAA. Don’t sleep on [autotag]Cam Johnson[/autotag] either. He is just a freshman but he has the talent to be a Friday night starter already. [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag], the transfer from Xavier is also a top-tier pitcher. What a rotation.

Another thing, it seems that true freshman [autotag]Jake Brown[/autotag] has earned his spot on the roster as a starter in the outfield. To complement that, it seems [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] will slide [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] down to second base. Pearson has spent the last two years as a corner outfielder for the Tigers but now he will take the place of [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag].

Rogers was even kind enough to give us a possible starting nine for the Tigers. It looks like the outfield will consist of [autotag]Mac Bingham[/autotag] (Arizona transfer), [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] and Jake Brown. In the infield, it will be [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] at third base, [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] (South Carolina transfer) at shortstop, Pearson/[autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] at second base, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] at first base, [autotag]Alex Millazo[/autotag]/[autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] at catcher, and Travinski/[autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag] as the designated hitter.

LSU will start its title defense on Feb. 16 against VMI.

LSU baseball’s Hayden Travinski to wear No. 8

LSU awarded the No. 8 jersey to redshirt senior catcher Hayden Travinski.

LSU baseball found its next No. 8.

Catcher [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] will take over the mantle from [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], who wore the number from 2022-23.

Each year, the jersey is given to an upperclassman “who exemplifies the spirit of LSU baseball through his leadership and dedication to the program.”

Travinski will be a redshirt senior in 2024 following his breakout campaign of 2023.

Despite starting only 23 games and appearing in 41, Travinski notched 37 hits on the year. His .692 slugging was third on the team, trailing the likes of [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag].

Travinski took over the starting catcher role in April, but he was banged up throughout much of the postseason.

LSU remains deep at catcher, but Travinski should be the favorite to land the job. He could also end up in the DH spot or play first base, depending on how the rest of the lineup shakes out and which young guys emerge.

LSU’s losing a lot after it’s title run. On the field and from a leadership standpoint. LSU will count on Travinski to provide in both departments next year.

WATCH: Gavin Dugas records 1st professional home run with Class-A Fredericksburg Nationals

Dylan Crews was not the only former Tiger who hit a milestone home run Sunday afternoon.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was not the only former Tiger who hit a milestone home run Thursday afternoon. As a matter of fact, Crews wasn’t the only one to do it for the Class-A Fredericksburg Nationals.

[autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] was selected by the Washington Nationals in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB draft. He joined Crews in rookie ball to start, and after two games, he was called up to Fredericksburg.

In the bottom of the fifth inning in Sunday’s game against the Salem Red Sox, Dugas hit his first professional home run. That solo shot gave the Nationals a 5-2 lead and would propel them to an eventual walk-off win.

Dugas was a second baseman during his time at LSU but he has transitioned to left field at the minor league level. It remains to be seen if he will stay there for an extended amount of time or if it is just a temporary move.

WATCH: Dylan Crews records 1st professional home run with Class-A Fredericksburg Nationals

After a rough debut with Fredericksburg on Saturday, Dylan Crews homered in his first plate appearance on Sunday.

No. 2 MLB draft pick [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] made his first appearance at the Class-A level with the Fredericksburg Nationals of the Carolina League, but the former LSU star didn’t have the success he had in his rookie-level debut.

Crews saw five at-bats with the Washington Nationals minor league affiliate, but he didn’t record any hits and notched a strikeout against the Salem Red Sox. However, Crews’ second appearance with the team on Sunday started off much stronger.

On a full count, Crews crushed one over the wall in left-center field to record his first professional home run. What a way to bounce back from a rough debut.

Crews, who is playing alongside his former LSU teammate [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] in Fredericksburg, could be on the fast track through the minor leagues after the Nationals signed him to a $9.2 million signing bonus, the most for a position player and second-most ever behind just his teammate [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], who went first overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He began his professional career with the Florida Complex League Nationals, but after he went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs and a double in his debut, he quickly earned the call-up to Class-A.

LOOK: Washington Nationals formally introduce former LSU star Dylan Crews

With Jay Johnson in attendance, Dylan Crews officially joined the Washington Nationals organization Saturday.

The Washington Nationals officially introduced No. 2 overall pick [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] on Saturday. LSU coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] was in attendance for the event.

The former star Tigers outfielder came to terms with the team on a record-setting over-slot deal for a position player with a signing bonus worth $9 million. That’s also the second-biggest bonus in the history of the draft behind only Crews’ teammate [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], the first overall pick who signed a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth $9.2 million.

With Crews officially joining the Nationals organization, he’ll be paired up again with [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], who Washington selected in the sixth round.

Here are the photos from Crews’ introduction in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
